Bennett Family FAMILY UNIT BAKING MEMORIES The Bakes Up Memories By Sarah Marie Shepherd For many families, the Christmas season brings with it the scents of sugar and gingerbread cookies rising from the oven. The Bennett family is no exception. For more than thirty years, Sally Bennett has been collecting her favorite Christmas cookie recipes to enjoy with her eight children and their families. “Making cookies together is one of our favorite holiday activities,” Sally says as she looks through scrapbooks of Christmases past. The family has a canon of about seven different kinds of cookies they make: Pealing Bells, Mushrooms, Candy Canes, Robins’ Nests, Granny’s Fruitcake, Lemon Logs, and Chocolate Stars. To make the cookies, Sally first makes large batches of the different kinds of dough and then freezes them. When company calls, she thaws the dough and together she and her children, grandchildren, and other friends and family members will make the cookies together. Sally and Cliff, her husband, emphasize that it’s a project everyone enjoys: “When our baby grandson Patrick comes into town, he makes cookies, and when Granny comes into town, she makes cookies. It’s an intergenerational activity.” Year after year, the Bennett family and friends are brought together by, among other traditions, the shaping and baking of delectable Christmas cookies. Spreading the holiday cheer, Sally has shared some of her favorite recipes with Southern Inspired so that you, too, can enjoy them with your friends and family: SOUTHERNINSPIREDMAGAZINE.COM 11 12 SOUTHERN INSPIRED MAGAZINE FAMILY UNIT BAKING MEMORIES LIGHT COOKIE DOUGH BUTTERCREAM ICING 2/3 cup butter 2/3 cup sugar 1 cup honey 2 eggs 2 teaspoons lemon or vanilla flavoring 5 1/2 -5 3/4 cups white whole wheat flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup butter 1/3 cup vegetable shortening 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 5 cups confectioner’s sugar (1 box = 4 cups) 1/3 cup milk Cream butter, sugar, and honey. The Opryland Hotel recently reopened, downtown Nashville has gotten its holiday makeover. Locals and visitors might be looking for holiday activities that are off the beaten path. Nestled off Harding Pike in Belle Meade sits the Belle Meade Planta- tion, the former home of General William Hicks Jackson and his family, The thirty-acre historic site offers a unique look at the way Christmas was celebrated in the 1800s. The plantation’s original mansion was restored and now serves as a museum where visitors can take a tour guided by experts dressed in Civil War era garb. The mansion is currently decorated for the holidays. Decorations remain somewhat simple in comparison to modern -day standards but stay true to the time period. SOUTHERNINSPIREDMAGAZINE.COM 19 PAST REVISITED BELLE MEADE PLANTATION Holly is hung over images of the Jacksons' deceased loved ones as a memorial. “The Victorians had a morbid sense of life and death, and Christmas was usually a time for reflection in addition to celebration,” says John Lamb, plantation curator. Frothy syllabub, a traditional winter drink, waits in the parlor room for guests. Syllabub comes in many variations. The Belle Meade recipe includes white wine and eggs. The mixture then sits for a few days to allow the cream to rise and froth. 20 SOUTHERN INSPIRED MAGAZINE PAST REVISITED BELLE MEADE PLANTATION Before the Civil War, the Christmas holiday was a simple affair, but after the war was over there was a desire to be modern and forward thinking. This new outlook combined with mass production and the importation of goods sparked the commercialization of Christmas. According to Lamb, the change was not received well by the press, and families such as the Jacksons were criticized. The Belle Meade Plantation offers an educational experience. Today's guests learn about the Jackson family and other residents of the plantation. Lamb notes that the Jackson family hosted well-known guests during the holiday season such as President and Mrs. Cleveland, Robert Todd Lincoln, Charles Dudley Warmer, and William Howard Taft. SOUTHERNINSPIREDMAGAZINE.COM 21 22 SOUTHERN INSPIRED MAGAZINE PAST REVISITED BELLE MEADE PLANTATION After touring the mansion and plantation grounds, guests can relax at The Winery, open Monday through Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. All the wines offered come from grapes grown near Hohenwald, Tennessee, and the wine is made by award winning vintner Brian Hamm. Director Alton Kelley and his wife Sheree, run the non-profit winery. All bottles of the local wine selection are under twenty dollars, and all proceeds go back to the plantation to help preserve local history. Wither you are looking for a family fun outing, a visit to the past, or drinks with friends, the Belle Meade Plantation is the perfect holiday attraction. The twelve- foot Christmas tree will be on display in the home through the Holiday season. The Christmas tree is covered in sterling silver ornaments, a display which has been a lobor of love for many Christmases as Wiggins has been collecting the ornaments since th 1970's. The collection features various ornaments by American Heritage, Boston Museum, Buccellati, Christopher Radko, Gorham, Halls, Hand and Hammer, Lunt Silversmiths, Neiman-Marcus, Reed and Barton, Sculpture Workshop, Tiffany, Towle Silversmiths and Wallace Silversmiths. Buccellati, an Italian company, introduced its first sterling silver ornament to the U.S. market in 1986. The 1988 Buccellati Santa showcased on the Christmas tree at Copper Steel Farms has been one of the most sought-after sterling ornaments in the country, and the Nashville designer considers this to be his most prized ornament. Other favorites include those by Christopher Radko, who produced only three ornaments from 1997 to 1999. The 1998 Regal Reindeer from this collection was designed to double as a pin. NeimanMarcus introduced a three dimensional ornament comprised of moving parts featuring a reindeer, an angel and a jack-in-the box. Also gracing the tree at Copper Steel Farms are the large and impressive Archive Series ornaments produced by Gorham from 1988 until 1993. Gorham was the first of the U.S. Silversmiths to introduce a series of sterling ornaments. Yet the very first sterling silver ornament ever produced was not part of a series. This was the1964 Pieta made by Towle for the New York World’s Fair and is one of the many rare ornaments crepresented in Wiggins's collection. Towlel's later series, The Twelve Days of Christmas, set the stage for the beginning of the sterling ornament collector's market as it exis today. LOUIS ZOO BY HANNAH HARRIS I just moved to St. Louis, so I wanted to see the sights. If you ever visit St. Louis, the first place you should go is to the Zoo. IT’S FREE!!! The zoo has almost every animal you can imagine, from kangaroos to grizzly bears! Plus, you can see all of the animals you normally think of at a zoo, like lions , giraffes, tigers, and zebras. The zoo also has endangered and rare animals, like Bongos. My favorite part was the penguin exhibit. It was FREEZING in there, so bring a sweater! They also have a butterfly exhibit, where you walk into a giant glass dome with plants everywhere. The butterflies live in a natural habitat and fly around freely. They land on people, too! They even 48 SOUTHERN INSPIRED MAGAZINE TWEEN TALK ST. LOUIS ZOO have insects and reptiles…but they don’t run around freely. In the summertime, you can feed stingrays and see a sea lion show where the sea lions go on stage and perform tricks! There is also a train that takes you all over the zoo. It is so much fun! It goes through dark tunnels, past the elephants, and saves you from a LOT of walking! So, if you visit St. Louis, plan a day to go to the zoo! TWEEN TALK ST. LOUIS ZOO ADMISSION: Admission to the Saint Louis Zoo is free to all. There are fees for Zooline Railroad, Sea Lion Show, Children’s Zoo, Conservation Carousel, Wild Adventure simulator, 3-D movie, and Zoo parking lots. That is exactly what Caregivers, Inc and Affordable Home Access Solutions are – two businesses operated by husband and wife team Robert and Betty Deblasio. Not only is this 2-person team a compassionate and caring duo, but they are both registered nurses who have years of experience in the hospital, home health and healthcare fields. Operating out of three locations (Hendersonville, Nashville and Brentwood/Franklin) Robert and Betty Deblasio orchestrate a full service company that offers a very broad arena of care to individuals who need assistance in some form. “Caregivers, Inc. is the first of its kind in the middle Tennessee area,” stated, Robert Deblasio. “After working in the healthcare profession for a number of years I realized a great need for this type of service - a service that would comfort the minds of individuals with aging parents; a service that would offer support to individuals receiving rehabilitation or physical therapy; a service that would care for individuals with a short term illness; or a service for those suffering with a debilitating condition,” continued Deblasio. The most important components of survival, that we sometimes take for granted, are a large part of what Caregivers, Inc. provides. Eating, drinking, bathing, exercising, and creating a safe environment make up a very basic, but vital, list of functions that the Caregivers, Inc. staff sets in motion for those who need assistance. Assisting with medications, bathroom needs, providing meals, and assisting with exercise can all provide a peace of mind for the family member who cannot be with his or her loved one 24 hours, 7 days a week. Not only does Caregivers, Inc. assist with basic needs, but they also fill in gaps between physical therapy appointments and remind patients of their therapy schedules; or the staff can check insulin levels or blood sugar levels. While Caregivers, Inc. does not employ physical therapists or dietitians, the staff is there to remind and coach while keeping the patient in check with his or her schedules or routines that the physicians or therapists have set in place. Some of the other services that Caregivers, Inc. offers are housekeeping, companionship, respite for family, escorts to medical appointments, errand service and even newborn/well baby care. “There are specific needs that we are geared toward. We have an awareness of our clients’ needs because we view each individual situation from a clinical standpoint,” commented Deblasio. When asked what makes Caregivers, Inc. stand out in the home care business, SOUTHERNINSPIREDMAGAZINE.COM 55 in advance. We also accept Visa and Mastercard payments.” Standing beside Caregivers, Inc. is its sister business, Affordable Home Access Solutions, also owned and operated by the Deblasio team. Affordable Home Access Solutions makes a home completely accessible for various medical needs. “So many people need these medical amenities, but they do not know they exist. We hope to inform and educate our communities that these products do exist,” remarked Deblasio. “Our specialty is home modifications for the elderly, disabled, and chronically ill.” Many individuals are released from their hospital stay and upon returning home they realize that there is an unexpected need for assistance to complete their daily routines. With the installation of these medical provisions, Affordable Home Access Solutions is able to save its clients exorbitant amounts of money by allowing the patient to live in his or her own home instead of having to stay in a medical facility. Indoor and outdoor ramps, roll-in showers, walk-in bathtubs, stair lifts, elevators (also called vertical lifts), grab bars for showers/tubs/commodes, and overhead lift systems are some of the company’s most popular installations. “All of our installations are ADA approved,” stated Deblasio. “We follow their guidelines to a tee.” I-STOCK PHOTO Deblasio said, “We are not a franchise, but we are a family operated business. I believe this is what makes us unique and thorough in what we do. It sets us apart from the rest.” Caregivers, Inc. staffs approximately 130 employees with a variety of skills for various needs. “We are so much more than a sitting company, remarked Deblasio. “We employee CNTs’, LPN’s, RN’s, and sitting assistants, all of whom have been screened and tested to meet our high quality of standards. We want to insure that our clients have the safest and most knowledgeable caregivers that we can provide. Extensive background checks, pre-drug screens and continued random drug tests are all part of our ongoing commitment of quality to our clients. Caregivers, Inc. boasts a drug free work place, and we are very proud of that fact,” continued Deblasio. Caregivers, Inc. services Davidson, Sumner, Wilson, Dickson, Williamson, Montgomery, Robertson, and Rutherford counties. Caregivers, Inc. is licensed by the State of Tennessee as a Personal Support Service, and they are also bonded and insured - all of which provides a peace of mind to individuals seeking their services. Caregivers, Inc. offers a wide range of payment options. “We are pleased that we can extend an easy and affordable way to pay,” stated Deblasio. “In today’s economy it is so important that we present manageable payment plans. We offer six-month and twelve-month plans for short term care, instead of requiring payment 56 SOUTHERN INSPIRED MAGAZINE “A lot of customers think that we are a durable medical equipment company, but we are much more than that,” said Deblasio. “We not only install numerous medical provisions, but we also make modifications to our clients’ homes such as lowering kitchen cabinets. We hope to take our services to another level, perhaps in the next six months, by offering modifications to swimming pools and automobiles,” continued Deblasio. “Thirty or forty years ago it was commonplace for the elderly couples with medical equipment needs to sell their homes so they could live in medical facilities. This theory has changed over the years,” said Deblasio. “Our senior citizens are now living with their children or other loved ones which makes home modifications a necessity now more than ever.” Deblasio stated, “The mission of Affordable Home Access Solutions is to keep individuals at home. We can save them a great deal of money and make them as ON TOPIC CAREGIVERS comfortable as possible with in-home modifications.” Deblasio wants potential customers to know that financing is available through VA grants (up to $6,400), Medicare, a variety of insurance policies, along with several other options. With a phone call to Affordable Home Access Solutions, a staff member can guide and assist individuals in making financial choices that are right for him or her. “We have a top rating in the service that we provide. We are licensed by the State of Tennessee and we are certified by CAPS (Certified Aging In-place Specialists). We also boast an excellent rating with Better Business Bureau. To stand by our good name, we offer a 12-month installation guarantee,” continued Deblasio. “We encourage individuals to call us and see what we can offer them or their loved ones.
