KASKASKIA COLLEGE ANNUAL FOUNDATION REPORT KASKASKIA COLLEGE FOUNDATION MEMBERS AND FRIENDS SUPPORTERS OF THE KASKASKIA COLLEGE FOUNDATION Thanks to your dedication and generosity, the Kaskaskia College Foundation continues to grow and is playing a key role in allowing a growing number of deserving students to realize their educational dreams and goals. The Foundation is awarding a record number of scholarships and is providing a wide range of other support to assist with the Kaskaskia College educational mission. The Kaskaskia College Foundation has provided a tremendous amount of support in serving the students and residents of the Kaskaskia College District. The College has experienced record enrollments over the last six years, and currently serves more than 11,000 students per year. These record enrollments have occurred due to the high quality of our instructional programs and services, the leadership and support of the KC Board of Trustees, and the wonderful support of the KC Foundation. This report will highlight the many accomplishments of the Foundation over the past year and outline the plans for future goals designed to benefit the students and communities of the Kaskaskia College District. Also, through the generosity and commitment of the Foundation, the College has been able to reach new and diverse populations by expanding into several communities in the College district. Recently, we have completed and opened both the new Health and Professional Careers building and the new KC Vandalia Campus. Many other expansion projects are underway and are designed to improve our programs and services for students and the community. These successes would not be possible without the long standing and dedicated support of the KC Foundation and we are honored to have the Foundation as a partner in our educational mission. We are extremely grateful to our Foundation Directors and Trustees and the friends and donors of the Foundation who have provided resources that the College would not otherwise have. Through education, together we are truly making a difference in the lives of many and we are truly appreciative of everyone’s support. Thanks to the Foundation and all donors and for ensuring that Kaskaskia College remains a “world class” institution of higher education for all. As President of the Foundation, I am truly appreciative of the support so many individuals, firms and organizations have provided and I have never been prouder of the Foundation’s work and accomplishments. You are wonderful partners in the success of Kaskaskia College and the fulfillment of the institutions mission to provide educational opportunities for deserving students. We are truly blessed to have a wonderful and dedicated board of directors and trustees serving the KC Foundation. Many thanks are extended to these excellent volunteers for their service and we extend our thanks to the many friends who support the educational programs and causes through the Foundation. I am looking forward to working with you in the future as the Foundation continues to thrive in serving the needs of Kaskaskia College. Marietta Broughton KC Foundation President Dr. Jim Underwood College President 2 BUILDING A SOLID FOUNDATION FOR EDUCATION Alumni & Friends Friends of the Fine Arts The Alumni & Friends Association has been revitalized with a renewed focus and vision as we continue to strive to serve as the gateway for alumni and friends to connect with one another and with the college. The Alumni & Friends Association was established in 2004 to provide a link between the College and its students; past, present, and future. It is the hope of the association that old friendships are renewed, new ones are created, and the ties that bind each person who attended Kaskaskia College are strengthened. The Association also provides a link for those who may not have attended Kaskaskia College, but share the same passion for the mission of the College, to join as friends. The Kaskaskia College Friends of the Fine Arts continues to grow. The group supports the performing and visual arts at the College. The Friends of the Fine Arts strives to increase and improve the level of participation for the student body and for students of the visual and performing arts. At the present time the Kaskaskia College Friends of the Fine Arts has a membership of 158 individuals. These memberships are made up of 83 family memberships, 59 individual memberships, and 16 corporate memberships. The Friends of the Fine Arts will continue to focus on increasing individual and corporate memberships. Through continued fund raising efforts, additional dollars will be added to the Rotary Clubs Endowment Fund. Tentative plans for the next Evening of Fine Arts are being made for October, 2008. In 2007, the Rotary Clubs Endowed Scholarship fund grew to over $50,000, with an ultimate goal of reaching $100,000. Five scholarships of $500 were awarded from the Friends of the Fine Arts to students in the performing and visual art programs. The Friends of the Fine Arts Board are: Sherm Doolen, President; Mike Loomis, Vice-President; Louis Fogleman, Secretary; Shirley Martin, Treasurer; Dr. Dee Boswell, Member-at-Large; Dr. Jim Underwood, Ex-Officio; Kellie Henegar, Ex-Officio, and Rhonda Boehne, ExOfficio. An estimated 150 Alumni & Friends attended the 2007 Baseball Alumni Weekend in October. Pictured at the Alumni Diner are former KC Blue Devils & former Major League Players Bryan Eversgerd & Jason Rakers. Former & current KC Baseball Coaches Larry Smith & Brad Tuttle are also pictured in the photo. Sports Association The goal of the Kaskaskia College Sports Association is for all student athletes to reach their potential both academically and athletically. The Sports Association has dedicated itself to building friends and helping to support athletics. Additionally, the Sports Association is dedicated to the development of new, improved, and expanded athletic facility needs, and assisting the Athletic department in achieving excellence. Since it was established in July of 2003, the Sports Association has raised over $200,000. Twenty-five corporate sponsors are maintained each year, along with over 250 members. A variety of fund raisers are held each year including a Par-3 golf tournament, grade school basketball shoot-out, and athletic posters. The KCSA has pledged $100,000 over a five year period for the expansion of the Sports and Wellness Complex. The Alumni and Friends Association continues to build in strength and numbers as we continue to work toward developing the association into an integral part of the College’s success. The Association is proud to be sponsoring two new scholarship opportunities and has set many other exciting goals for the year ahead. A few sponsored initiatives include campus improvements, community outreach opportunities, and the development of an endowed scholarship. We will also be taking an active role in providing activities for this year’s Alumni Weekend and Open House. The Alumni and Friends Board are: Bob Bowen, President; Spring Thomas, Vice-President; Tina Henson, Secretary; and Amy Troutt, Advisor.. 3 KASKASKIA COLLEGE FOUNDATION The Sports Association has outlined several initiatives such as increasing community awareness of outstanding student-athlete successes, enhancing relationships between the KC Athletic Department and the community, and providing continued support, which will ensure the quality and growth of the athletic department. Current board members include Bruce Barkau (Okawville), Chairman; Jim Mulvaney (Centralia), Vice-Chairman; Jeff Rabenort (Okawville), Treasurer; Dr. Earl Walker (Centralia), Secretary; and Duane Karrick (Centralia), Initiatives Development Chairman. Phase II of the project will include: an addition to the current concession building for locker rooms and an indoor hitting facility, lighting the baseball and softball fields, the construction of a soccer field, six tennis courts and a wellness track. The walking trail will allow visitors, staff and students the opportunity to visit the natural setting of the KC Campus. A major gifts campaign is underway to raise $2.2 million dollars in private funds from friends and supporters of Kaskaskia College for the Phase II projects. The campaign steering committee is comprised of Larry McCaskey, Chairman; C.W. Stewart, College Advancement Office; Suzanne Christ, Secretary; and members Larry Smith, Bill Hawley, Louis Fogleman, John Cavaletto along with coaches and staff. Interested individuals should contact the Advancement Office at 618-545-3062. Sports and Wellness Campaign Kaskaskia College is dedicated to ensuring the citizens of the College District high quality educational programs, with facilities conducive to learning to include effective and appropriate sports and wellness facilities. Additionally, a major initiative is to provide a comprehensive Wellness Program for students, staff and the community. Brick Paving Campaign Kaskaskia College announces a brick paving campaign that is being implemented to expand and enhance the athletic and wellness opportunities of its students and its community through the KC Sports and Wellness Complex, located in front of the campus. The College is committed to providing athletic and wellness facilities that are attractive, functional and supportive for students and offer the opportunity for student-athletes to have respective facilities that instill pride and participation at KC. Providing competitive facilities is key to recruiting the best students to be part of the College's intercollegiate athletic program. The brick campaign is a wonderful opportunity to honor the memory of a loved one or pay tribute to a special individual. Personalized bricks also make great gifts for students, family members, or friends. Below is a listing of the opportunities offered through this campaign. For a donation of $150.00, a 4 x 8 brick can be purchased that will allow three lines of imprint with 12-13 characters per line. A $300.00 donation will purchase an 8 x 8 brick that allows six lines of imprint. A 12 x 12 Granite block (available in grey or black) for a $700 donation is also available, as well as a 16 x 16 wall in Granite (available in grey or black) for a $1,500 donation. A bench in grey or black granite can also be purchased for $5,000. Additional instructional programs will benefit from this complex, including physical education and wellness classes for both credit and non-credit offerings. This complex will provide enhanced recruitment opportunities through camps for children and teens. It will ultimately build stronger relationships within the College District by offering public and private recreational and sporting events and making available a quality training facility for other groups. Funds raised through the brick campaign will help pay for phase II of the Sports and Wellness Campaign. The College made an initial financial commitment of $1.8 million for construction of Phase I of the complex which includes a concession and restroom area, new softball field, renovated baseball field, spectator seating, press boxes, accessible parking and a lighted commons area. For more information or to request a brochure, please contact Cathy Karrick, Director of Public Information, Kaskaskia College 27210 College Road Centralia, IL 62801. 4 BUILDING A SOLID FOUNDATION FOR EDUCATION Teachers & Coaches Entrepreneurship Program Lifelong Learning Center Kaskaskia College’s Lifelong Leaning Center will occupy the central portion of the campus. The new building is expected to be finished in November 2008. The center features a large Conference Area, an Art Gallery and six electronically connected classrooms, meeting rooms and offices. The conference area will seat 400. Kaskaskia College honored two local, family owned businesses with its Teachers and Coaches Entrepreneurship “Entrepreneur of the Year.” The Maschhoffs Inc., were honored for growing a family farm with two employees to one of the largest pork producers in the country, with 550 employees and 1,400 who work with the company's grower network. NOTS Services and the Kirchner family were honored for growing from one truck in 1981 to one of the most successful less-thantruckload carriers serving the Midwest. Capping the project is a 50 foot clock tower that is under construction front of the Lifelong Learning Center that will become a focal point for the campus and serve as a symbol that Kaskaskia College is a proud high education learning institution. The College has named the tower in honor of the Jerome and Mildred Rakers Family for their generous gift towards the construction of the structure. Jerome Rakers, a long time supporter of the College and a Director Emeritus of the College Foundation said, “My family and I are proud to assist with this wonderful project that will forever be a part of Kaskaskia College.” Rakers and his family will include this inscription on the tower “A Time to Build Your Future”. The College also honored Dr. Dee and Sue Boswell for their support of KC’s Arts and Education programs by naming the new art gallery in their honor. The Dee and Sue Boswell Art Gallery will highlight paintings, photography, sculptures and other forms of artwork collected by the College. The gallery will provide a facility for students, faculty, staff, and guests to exhibit their artwork for the enjoyment of everyone. KC President Dr. Jim Underwood and KC Foundation President Marietta Broughton present the College’s 2008 TCEP Award to NOTS Services founder Tom and Pat Kirchner and their family. Pictured below, Marietta Broughton and Dr. Jim Underwood present the Maschhoffs Family with the TCEP Award. Kaskaskia College Arboretum The Kaskaskia College Arboretum passes 100 trees in number! The arboretum is a specialized forest growing at Kaskaskia College, with trees being planted in honor or in memory of individuals. The Kaskaskia College Foundation provides a way for individuals, groups and organizations to provide a living memorial. The trees provide a much needed landscaping embellishment for the campus. Students have an opportunity to rest, study, and socialize beneath the forest canopy. The Teachers and Coaches Entrepreneurship program was established to honor local businesses for the positive and lasting impacts they have made upon their communities. 5 KASKASKIA COLLEGE FOUNDATION Vandalia Campus While the trees are located throughout the campus, a map is provide to assist in finding your tree. The map and Arboretum can be found at www.kaskaskia.edu/facility/arb_home. Each tree has a plaque at its base identifying the donor or the memorial. What a wonderful way to remember a friend. The last Friday in April in Illinois is set aside for Illinois Arbor Day. A brief ceremony was held to honor those dedications. Friends and relatives were invited to attend and observe their trees, and additional new trees were planted. Health & Professional Careers Building The Kaskaskia College Vandalia Campus officially opened its doors on January 14, 2008, enhancing the educational opportunities for students in the northern part of the KC District. The first building of the new campus is named for the late Hazel Simma-Kelly whose estate donated nearly $1.3 million for its construction through the Old Capital Foundation. The KC Vandalia Campus features three “smart classrooms” which are described as state-of-the art high-tech electronic classrooms. Also in the building are four labs that will be used for nursing, art, chemistry and anatomy/biology classes, and facilities that can be used for community meetings and events. The Kaskaskia College Board of Trustees, Foundation, administration and staff were joined by state officials and members of the community on October 17,2007 to cut the ribbon and officially open the College’s new Health and Professional Careers Building. The ceremony also gave KC the opportunity to thank members of the public and college staff who pledged their financial support to the project. This project replace the last remaining temporary buildings. KC President Dr. Jim Underwood noted that through the generosity of the Kaskaskia College Foundation and donors, nearly a million dollars was raised toward the $3 million dollar local match that was needed for the project. “This is a proud institution serving students with quality programs and services,” said Underwood, “thousands of students will gain the skills they need for their future through this new facility.” Kaskaskia College President Dr. Jim Underwood estimated that KC will serve 1,500 students each year in Vandalia, explaining that the College will be able to add day programs and expand its offerings of evening programs. “This is just the beginning of this campus,” said Underwood. “There are many educational opportunities that will now be accessible through this campus and I am so proud the shared vision for this is now a reality.” The Health and Professional Careers Building houses KC’s Cosmetology, Dental Assisting, Radiology, Massage Therapy, Physical Therapy Assistant, Respiratory Therapy and Child Care programs, as well as housing the College’s Childern’s Learning Center. KC Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Jim Beasley, said that the establishment of the Vandalia Campus has been a remarkable success. “It has been made possible through the commitment and through the dedication of so many.” Good things don’t just happen by accident. Good people make good things happen,” he stated. The State of Illinois through an $8 million appropriation assisted with the funding for the project, which was used in addition to the $3 million raised locally. 6 BUILDING A SOLID FOUNDATION FOR EDUCATION Scholarships on the Increase It is a great honor to have an endowed scholarship at Kaskaskia College as a memorial to a friend or loved one. Support this past year reflected growth in both numbers and gross dollars of scholarships as the graphs indicate. The Foundation awarded 150 scholarships to Kaskaskia College students this past year, totaling $108,932. These funds assist students with tuition, fees, and other school related expenses. In many cases, our students would not be able to attend without the financial assistance provided by the Foundation. The previous year, 141 scholarships were awarded in the amount of $89,850. This is a significant difference because of the positive influence these scholarships have on our students Please consider establishing an endowed scholarship today by contacting a member of the Foundation or the Institutional Advancement office. The Foundation will continue to seek to expand our existing sources of revenue, and work to develop new funding sources. The more revenue we are able to provide the Foundation means more aid and assistance is provided to our students. The Kaskaskia College Foundation resources support and enhance the educational process of the students of the college. Nearly every student’s life is touched by some Foundation activity. The enlargement of the Foundation’s resources allows for both the expansion in the educational process and for an increase in the quality and depth of the educational experience. When you consider all of the Foundation activities, it helps to step back and look at all of the accomplishments. The Foundation endowment is the key to long term support of the college because it provides strength through assisting students in school, but also because it leverages revenue that returns to the college through tuition, book sales, and other resources. For every dollar of support the Foundation provides to a student, it returns to the student many times over during their working lifetime. The resources provided by Foundation scholarships are synergistic. Each dollar provided in student scholarships leverages more tuition and services income to the college while providing the student with an additional income for life. The case for support for Kaskaskia College Foundation Scholarships is nearly self evident. It is easy to support a scholarship program when it is backed by solid educational values that are reflected in the value added to the student. These scholarships are net-net, with one hundred percent of the funds donated being passed to the student as a reflection of the endowed interest. 7 KASKASKIA COLLEGE FOUNDATION Endowed Scholarships Annual Scholarships Janice M.
