NHA`s Tiered Response to the American Pit Bull Terrier Dilemma
paw prints Nashville Humane Association Newsletter of the Nashville Humane Association 213 Oceola Avenue Nashville, TN 37209 Phone: (615) 352-1010 Fax: (615) 352-4111 Summer 2011 NHA’s Tiered Response to the American Pit Bull Terrier Dilemma www.nashvillehumane.org Thousands of American Pit Bull Terriers, and mixes of this breed, make up a large percentage of the dogs and puppies that flood into our Tennessee shelters. Davidson County Metro Animal Care and Control has estimated that approximately 36% of their dog and puppy population resembles breed characteristics typical of the American Pit Bull Terrier. Adoption Hours Monday: 10am-5pm Tuesday: 10am-5pm Wednesday: CLOSED Thursday: 10am-5pm Friday: 10am-5pm Saturday: 10am-5pm Sunday: 12pm-5pm Just say the words, “Pit Bull,” and you will evoke strong opinions either for the breed or against the breed. Despite the association of this breed with incidents that maim or kill other animals and humans, the reality is there has been no decline in the excessive, poor-quality breeding we see in many of the American Pit Bull Terriers in our county and state. The lack of quality in many local breeding programs, coupled with no training for the dogs and poor socialization, has resulted in dogs that contribute to the negative image of this breed. With no avenue for placement through adoption, the euthanasia rate for the breed (or mix of the breed) is extremely high. The Nashville Humane Association is approaching this compounded issue with a three-tiered approach. NHA has a program that allows any Davidson County pet owner whose dog or puppy resembles an American Pit Bull Terrier, or a suspected mix of that breed, to have their dog spayed or neutered free of charge. Additionally, this service is extended to Davidson County 501(c)(3) animal welfare organizations and their adoption-bound American Pit Bull Terriers or mixes of the breed. Through these services, NHA spayed and neutered 404 Pit Bulls, American Bull Dogs and Pit Bull mixes in 2010. United Way Campaign You can designate your United Way donations to Nashville Humane Association. Simply include our agency code: 7075. Most recently, the Nashville Humane Association hosted the Music City Pit Bull Summit for animal welfare professionals. The Farm at Natchez Trace in Franklin generously donated space in their kennels for 15 American Pit Bull Terriers from Companion Pet Rescue. These dogs were selected for hands-on educational sessions, teaching best practices on how to select Good Will Ambassadors for adoption and appropriate criteria to use when evaluating American Pit Bull Terriers for adoption. Inside Officers & Directors 2 Lifting of Spirits 2 We hope through our American Pit Bull Terrier spay and neuter program, responsible pit bull parenting classes and other educational initiatives the number of unwanted American Pit Bull Terriers will decline. Malott Karen Keenan Powell Libby Sieveking Julianne Williams After the devastating storms and record floods last April and May in Tennessee, many people and pets were left homeless, with no insurance and no place to go for assistance. Thanks to The Tennessee Recovery Project, help was on the way. The Tennessee Recovery Project is a program funded by a FEMA grant which provides emotional support and stress education for Flood Survivors. NHA created a partnership with the Project, to assist those survivors who had pets in their family. By going door to door in Davidson and surrounding counties, they are able to bring pet food, provided by NHA directly to the homes of Flood Survivors. According to Melissa Riley with the Tennessee Recovery Team, “Since partnering with NHA we have distributed approximately $4,000 dollars worth of dog and cat food and dog houses to over 200 Flood Survivor Families across Davidson County and in surrounding counties. The reaction when people see that their pets are remembered in this disaster is tremendous. Most of the time people were going without themselves, so to provide for their animals eased the financial burden on them and allowed for them to feed good food to their beloved companions, when they may not have had a home to live in.” The Tennessee Recovery Project continues to find Flood Survivors daily who have pets and are still struggling to rebuild. Only about 60% of Flood Survivors are back in their homes and rebuilt as of today. Tennessee has a long road ahead in the recovery process, but each time a Survivor is helped and their animals are considered, it eases their burden in a small way and lifts their spirits. Riley also says, “The Nashville Humane Association has been absolutely instrumental in leading the cause for animals recovery post disaster. It is a model that should be both remembered and repeated in other areas and other states after disasters.” Tail-Tale Signs of Success In 2010, the Nashville Humane Association placed 2,834 companion pets into loving homes! Additionally, through our Community Spay and Neuter program and ROVER (affectionately known as, “the big yellow bus”), we spayed and neutered 8,576 animals. Join us in June as we celebrate National Adopt a Shelter Cat month with special adoption rates. For more information on special adoption events, visit www.nashvillehumane.org often. While there, view our available pets and read the Adoption Stories. They are sure to leave a smile on your face, much like this one… LIFE MEMBERS Marion P. Couch George Crook Maclin Davis HONORARY MEMBERS John O. Colton Julia C. Colton EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Mary Pat Boatfield Calie’s family has received assistance from NHA and The Tennessee Recovery Team “When we first saw Lexi, we loved that she had a puppy face, but was full grown! She was very Lexi and Meghan Tidwell pop by NHA scared and shy, but we knew that with time she for a visit would come to trust us and love us. It only took a few weeks for her to break out of her shell, and now two months later, she is very confident and loving! Her favorite thing to do is to go to the dog park! I was surprised how well she gets along with other dogs, given she was rescued from a hoarding situation. We are thrilled to have found her, and grateful for all the wonderful work Nashville Humane does!” - Virginia, Meghan and Christopher Tidwell 2 The following people supported the Nashville Humane Association through tribute gifts between August 1, 2010 - February 28, 2011. NHA’s Tiered Response to the American Pit Bull Terrier Dilemma (continued from page 1) We wish to extend a hearty thank you to our sponsors for their support of the Music City Pit Bull Summit: The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), The Farm at Natchez Trace, Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and Companion Animal Initiatives of Tennessee (CAIT). Instructor Tim Racer and American Pit Bull Advocate Crawford Patton Pit Bull Summit Instructors Tim Racer, Donna Reynolds and Dr. Stormy Walker of Companion Pet Rescue 4 Paws-itive Reinforcement It’s a known fact that good manners will take you far in life. So at NHA, we encourage each of our furry residents to be polite (with the wag of a tail), courteous (no jumping), and patient (“stay”). However, there are always a few that need a little paws-itive reinforcement. These dogs may jump up or pull hard on a leash, which can be a deterrent to potential adopters. To get a little basic training under their collars, they are enrolled in the Prison Puppies Achieving Worthy Service Program (PPAWS). PPAWS is a joint cooperation between NHA and the Davidson County Detention Center and Tennessee Prison for Women. Select dogs from the humane association are sent to the center or prison for a 6-week stay where they receive socialization, manners training and one-on-one attention. A training team spends the day teaching their dog basic house manners, including keeping four feet on the ground, sit, down, stay, house training skills, and crate training, just to name a few. By attending the PPAWS program, these dogs have an increased chance at adoption and staying in their adoptive home. Additionally, the program provides a way for inmates to contribute to society in a positive manner and teaches life skills such as responsibility, social interaction, and patience – for the inmates and dogs. Leesa, a PPAWS graduate, is doing extremely well in her new home. Litters of puppies, “bottle feeders,” are vaccinated and sent to the prison until healthy enough to enter into the general population. Don’t miss NHA’s 2011 Microchip Clinics NHA is offering several opportunities for you to microchip your furry family member. Microchips are a safe and affordable way to keep you and your pet together forever. Microchip cost is $25.00, including registration. A priceless investment in your pet! June 18, 2011 October 22, 2011 August 20, 2011 December 3, 2011 National Microchip Month Farmers Coop, 3511 Dickerson Pike in Nashville National Homeless Animal Day NHA, 213 Oceola Avenue The Road to Recovery leads to NHA On February 2, 2011, NHA’s DART team prepared to receive animals from a Marshall County puppy mill raid. Contacted by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, facilitated by an anonymous tip, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) removed 97 dogs and one cat from a puppy mill in Lewisburg, TN. The animals were living in small wire cages (converted rabbit cages), covered in feces, and some so severely matted they couldn’t even see. “Many of these dogs were so filthy and uncared for that it was difficult for us to even tell what breed they were,” HSUS Tennessee Director Leighann McCollum said. “This is the perfect example of the squalid conditions dogs in puppy mills are forced to endure.” Most likely, these animals had been born in the shed and never seen daylight – until they were carried out with hopes of a new life. For 26 dogs and one cat, their new life began at NHA. Each animal was provided further medical care by Dr. Sharon Hensley, spayed or neutered, and temperament tested by behavioralist, Anna Henley. Many also required professional grooming, provided by the Nashville Kennel Club, and dental care. “We’re fortunate to have such great friends, staff and volunteers,” said NHA Director of Programs and Services Joy Beach. “The efforts of our staff and volunteers are complimented by our community partners. Everyone contributes their expertise to helping us fulfill our mission of finding responsible homes for these animals.” We are happy to report that all of the animals have been adopted and are enjoying a new, healthy life. You may watch the “Road to Recovery,” one poodle’s (Brownie) journey from the puppy mill to his new home at www.nashvillehumane.org. The new event was a fabulous and fun dinner with your dog and canine couture fashion show, featuring local fashion designers, jewelry designers and interior decorators who created custom dog pieces for the runway which were auctioned live to the highest bidder to benefit NHA. Pets of all shapes and sizes, up for adoption, strutted their stuff down the runway, with local and national celebrities, to feature these great fashions. Celebrity walkers included Bo Bice, Kacy Haggerty, Cindy Hay-Hemby, Rodney Mitchell, Janis Sontany, Shane Tallent and Holly Williams. Guests enjoyed walking the red carpet with their pooch to get a “paw”parazzi photo courtesy of Yelp and Claudia Kay Photography. Dogs that preferred the good life had the opportunity for a nail trim or massage courtesy of The Farm at Natchez Trace. For those furry fashionistas, Baxter Bailey and Company had lots of fashions and fabulous accessories on hand to stock any well-deserving pup’s closet. And the highlight of every dog’s evening, the Pedigree Doggie Buffet, stocked full of delicious food and treats from our favorite dog food company. Volunteer Cindy Hay-Hemby and Mazzy beautifully grace the runway After the night was through, we realized the evening had totally “gone to the dogs.” The first time event was a huge success, raising more than $27,000 for NHA. Additionally, all seven of our shelter models were adopted! It was a tremendous event, so we are going to do it again next year. Mark your calendars for January 21, 2012 and join us at the Hutton Hotel: Your dog will thank you!
