Celebrate Architecture is held in the Manship Theater, at the Shaw Center for
the Arts, in downtown Baton Rouge, overlooking the banks of the Misssissippi
River. The Shaw Center won a 2008 AIA National Honor Award.
Celebrate Architecture is a one-day design symposium, held each Spring in Baton Rouge,
Doug speaks at Celebrate Architecture
Louisiana. A group of internationally recognized architects spends the day with Louisiana
architects, students, and the public, presenting their work and discussing their approach to
design. Doug Ashe, FAIA began this program during his year as AIA Louisiana President in 2000
and continues to organize the program each year as well as serving as the moderator.
In its thirteen years, Celebrate Architecture has brought in over 40 internationally recognized
architects from all parts of the country and Canada. Each year focuses on a common theme
found in the work of each of the participants.

AIA Louisiana Traveling Fellowship
As a direct result of the financial success of Celebrate Architecture, AIA Louisiana was able to establish
its annual AIA Louisiana Traveling Fellowship, a $5,000 travel/study abroad award available to 3rd
and 4th year students at Louisiana schools of architecture. With the continued success of Celebrate
Architecture we are now able to award two fellowships each year. Additionally, AIA Louisiana makes an
annual $500 contribution to each of the five AIAS chapters in the state.

“AIA Louisiana’s C elebrate
A rchitecture lives
up to its name. It is a
celebration of design and is
one of the most successful
programs in the country to foster collegiate
spirit amongst our “independently
minded” design community. The format,
three speakers cleverly chosen for their
complimentary yet diverse design approach,
combined with an emphasis on “dialog”
over “presentation,” is not only an exciting
and inspiring day long event for the
participants, it is an equally enriching
experience for the speakers.”

“Events such as AIA
Louisiana’s C elebrate
A rchitecture are critical
events for their regions.
They bring the national
and international efforts of our profession
‘home’ to our communities to be shared and
discussed locally.”

“C elebrate A rchitecture
is a remarkable event. My
partner Richard Fernau
and I participated in it in
2004. Unlike a lecture
format, the symposium sets up a situation
that allows for the ‘all to rare’ opportunity
for real dialogue among colleagues.”
Laura Hartman, AIA

“Our experience with AIA
Louisiana’s C elebrate
A rchitecture program was
both hugely enjoyable and
memorable. The level of
camaraderie and dialogue is high and the
response from the Louisiana architecture
community is great. Tod Williams and I
both felt that we learned much about the
local practices, met wonderful people, ate
amazing food and connected to community
in personal ways that are not the norm
when we are asked to speak or be part of
public events.”
“The AIA Louisiana
C elebrate A rchitecture
event is one of the foremost
symposia of its kind in the
United States. It has clearly
energized the profession in Louisiana since
its inception. There are clear underlying
themes that focus the entire event, yielding
provocation, information and inspiration
in equal measure.”
