gets sendoff

SOUTH HARDIN – It is the final
stretch for graduating seniors in the
South Hardin schools.
And May brings a string of
final activities. First was Senior
Class Awards night and the annual
announcement of scholarships going
to members of the graduating class.
They include awards from state
and national organizations, but far
and away the most numerous are
locally backed and supported –
scholarships made in the names of
now-two and three generations of
school supporters.
This year the awards totaled over
70. Many are made in support of
students who plan to go on to college
in particular fields of study, others
are made by donors supporting
young people from the various South
Hardin communities.
Awards night was Tuesday
evening and the following morning
was the annual service-learning
project of the district. Students in
the high school are dispatched to
perform a number of community
service jobs, both to public and
private interests.

Grundy Hospital initiates
final construction push

GRUNDY CENTER - It will
have been almost 15 years of
construction, renewal and expansion,
by the time the Grundy County
Memorial Hospital celebrates its
65th year in 2017.
The finale of sorts comes this
year with a project that will address
structural needs of the original
‘heritage’ building on site.
The Grundy County Board of
Supervisors approved a key piece
of the project’s financing recently,
floating a $5 million general
obligation urban renewal bond issue.
At the same time, the hospital’s
Board of Commissioners has just
awarded construction bids.
Hopes are that the final phase
– phase three of the long, long
initiative – will be done in time for
the 65-year milestone.
Phase three will rejuvenate the
oldest 1952 portion of the hospital,
which once was the hospital, but
nowadays is, in large part, home to

climbed over the past ten years, and
the project increases clinic space
by fifty percent to accommodate
additional medical specialties, as
well as providing increased privacy
in the registration area. The clinic
and a new Radiology Women’s
Center will expand into space now
used for administrative and support
functions of the hospital.
The renovation project provides a
new roof for the original two-story
portion of the hospital, as well as
new windows and new mechanical
systems for the 1952 building, which
has not been used for patient care
since a new inpatient area opened in
2009. All administrative and support
functions will move to the second
floor once the project is complete in
mid-2017.

HARDIN COUNTY – This
year, the corn planting phase of
spring work sort of came and went
without making a ripple.
None of the excessive rains of
past years. No disturbances.
“Sort of a mellow spring,” says
Hardin County Extension’s Darwin
Miller.
He says one of the few concerns
at the outset had been how the
moderate winter might impact the
soil bed.
But the corn planting essentially
came off without a hitch, he says.
Extension reports that just about
all the corn was is in the ground here

time to finish what was started by
giving the original building a muchneeded upgrade,” explains Havens.
“The project also provides space to
expand the Specialty Clinic, which

Havens says the $7.5 million
project will be financed by the bond
sale, $2.5 million in hospital cash
reserves, and private fundraising.

HARDIN COUNTY– Six years
ago who would have guessed that
one of the best attended fairground
attractions would be a festival
devoted to providers of social
services.
But Family Fest has become a hit
with young families and routinely
fills the community building in the
early days of May.
This marked the sixth year of the
project, which brings together all
kinds of providers for young families
with children. This year there were
26 service agencies and a few others
there just for food and the fun.
And close to 400 came calling
to get acquainted with health care,
childcare, education and other
offerings.

PROVIDENCE – “People say they
will miss me, but I think they will
miss Jack more.”
Mary Bendixen, principal of the
E-NP Elementary School for the
last four years, says she takes a
great deal of satisfaction with the
accomplishments of the last four
years, particularly the team ones
involving all the staff.
She is leaving to be closer to
home, and even then the decision
was a tough one.
And she is, much to the whole
school’s sadness, taking Jack with
her.
Jack is the Bendixen family dog,
who not long after his owner took
the job here, joined her in the halls
of the grade school.
She will tell you he is a wonder.
Everyone, children and staff seem to
be in a better frame of mind when he
is present.
Frames of mind are so often key in
an elementary school she says.
You would think that the big kids
would have the bigger problems, but
it’s the little ones who so often bring
their troubles to school.
That was probably my biggest
learning experience here. Just
how much time and effort teachers
expend getting children ready to
face the day.
The dog helped, and a lot of
special initiatives did too.
Bendixen was hardly new to
the situation. She had taught the
younger grades twenty years herself.
Six years in Anamosa and then
worked in a variety of administrative
positions, including one as an
assistant principal.
In all it was 30 years in education.
Now the family is moving to her
husband’s home area and she is
Mary Bendixen, the kids and Jack.

during the week of the 12th through
the 17th. On the evening of the 17th
starting at 7 p.m. an open house for
the public.
Baccalaureate is May 18 at 7 p.m.
and Commencement is on May 22
at 1:30 p.m. in the high school gym.

Miss Iowa, Taylor Weibers will be
giving the Baccalaureate Address on
Wednesday, May 18th at 7:00 p.m.
at South Hardin HIGH School to the
graduating seniors, their families and
friends. Taylor was the preliminary
swim suit and talent winner in the
Miss America pageant last year
and attributes the importance of her
journey to the relationship she has
with God. She will share that story
along with singing a couple of her
favorite Christian songs.
This evening is presented by
Rev. Corey Larson, pastor, First
Congregational United Church of
Christ in Eldora and Rev. Laura R.
Renault, pastor, Zion United Church
of Christ in Hubbard and the Pine
Lake Ministerium. Several youth
from the graduating class of 2016 are
also a part of the planning processes.

County Treasurer Machel Eichmeier
is reminding property owners that
the Iowa Property Credit Claim is
available.
Iowaresidentsareeligibletofile
a claim for Property Tax Credit if
total 2015 household income was
less than $22,360 and one of the
following applies:
The claimant was 65 years of age
or older as of December 31 of 2015.
Or, the claimant was totally
disabled and 18 years of age or older
by December 31, 2015.
Deadline to file for the reduced
real estate tax is June 1 of 2016
at the county treasurer’s office in
Eldora.

The past reporting week began
with cooler than normal weather
prevailing in most areas through
mid-week. High temperatures on
Sunday (1st) were mostly in the
forties while sixties prevailed in
most areas from Monday through
Wednesday. Light freezes were
recorded in scattered areas on
Monday (2nd), Tuesday (3rd) and
Thursday (5th) mornings. Warmer
air arrived in northwestern Iowa on
Thursday and statewide on Friday.
Friday was easily the warmest day
of the week with highs in the eighties
over most of Iowa. Slightly cooler
weather returned for the weekend.
Temperature extremes for the week
ranged from Thursday morning
lows of 30 degrees at Cresco and
Elkader to Friday afternoon highs
of 90 degrees at Guttenberg and
Marion(thefirst90degreereadings
in the state this year). Temperatures
for the week as a whole averaged a
bit warmer than usual over the west

seemed real novel six years ago,
but organizer Carrie Kube says
that nowadays it is actually quite
common.

A short time ago another fair of
its kind took place in Iowa Falls,
dedicated to preventive services
designed to stem child abuse.
The festivals have young families
in mind, in particular.
Young families which have both
parents working, too busy to spend
the time getting acquainted with
all the services available to them.
Meanwhile, at the same time they are
are often families making their way
without the help of grandmothers
and grandfathers who no longer live
nearby.

depth were averaging in the midfifties to low sixties as of Sunday
(8th).

Churches face
off on golf
course
Iowa River Valley Early Childhood Area
has been the coordinating group behind a
couple of recent festivals – fairs you might
call them – only here the exhibitors come
from a wide range of social and human
service organizations who routinely help
young families cope with a wide range of
challenges.
Not In Hardin County Family FUN Event
was an afternoon of free activities, games
and prizes for Hardin County families
back in April, featuring the Hardin County
Child Abuse Prevention Coalition. It
hosted the event to raise awareness
about the prevention of child abuse.
Everyone gathered at the Dale Howard
Family Activity Center in Iowa Falls.
Hardin County organizations and
businesses
were
encouraged
to
participate by hosting a booth, providing
entertainment, or sponsoring this familyfocused event.
Last weekend, the 6th annual Family
Fest, was a project of the Hardin
County Circle of Life (HCCOL), again in
cooperation with area businesses and
organizations, serving the needs of young
families, particularly those with children.
It was at the Hardin County Fairgrounds
in Eldora.
The fest was part business, part fun for
the kids.

Golf Tournament will be held on
Sunday, May 22 at 1 p.m. at the
Hampton Country Club.
The tournament will be between
the four Catholic Churches of St.
Patrick’s of Hampton, St. Mark’s of
Iowa Falls and St. Mary’s of Eldora
and Ackley.
A limit of four teams per church
can be entered into the tourney due
to starting time and size of golf
course. The overall, lowest average
score of the teams from each church
will be used to determine the winner.
The winner of the annual tourney
will have a right to a traveling
trophy which can be displayed in the
winner’s Parish for the entire year.
Members of any of these churches
can call their church and form a
team.

Prior to the May meeting, we
cleaned up the ditches near Honey
Creek in New Providence.
The regular meeting of the ENP
Bearcats 4-H group was held at
Honey Creek Church on May 9,
2016. The meeting was called to
order by Shouly Brekke at 6:30 p.m.
Roll call was answered by fourteen
members. Minutes of the previous
meeting were read and approved.
The treasurer’s report was given.
Balance on hand is $888.24.
Old business: Madelyn showed
us designs for the club t-shirt that
she had put together. We decided on
a design and also chose Marilyn to
print the shirts.
New business: Cattle fitting and
showmanship workshop will be
held Saturday, May 28th from 10
AM to noon at the Hardin County
Fairgrounds. Kids will learn how
to fit cattle and also gain skills for
showmanship.
The last FSQA training will be
held Monday, June 6 at the Story
County Extension Office.
May 15 livestock ID forms are
due! Members must have it in by this
date or you will not be able to show
at the Hardin County or Iowa State
Fair.
Ryan and Shouly will be working
on our club booth for the Hardin
County Fair. Please bring a picture
of yourself to conference judging so
we can display it on the board.
The next meeting will be held
Monday, June 13, at the fairgrounds.
It will be a fair prep meeting so we
will be cleaning up the children’s
garden and also be helping each
other with projects and project ideas.

ELDORA – It is now summer
and you will once again begin to see
gathering up on Washington Street
right off the square. ABATE of Iowa
has a district headquarters here in
Eldora and the membership can be
seen gathering on a lot of weekends
to come.
But May has a special connotation
for the group. ABATE.
One of its big reasons for being is
to keep the rest of the driving public
aware of motorcycles on the road.
Getting a little too relaxed about
sharing the road can have sad consequences, and this is the month the
cyclist group tries to engage the public and the media in a special campaign to be aware, during the heavy
cycling traffic months of the summer
and those year round.
This motorcycle enthusiasts group
from this district travelled to the
State Capitol and met with Governor
Terry Branstad who signed on to the
effort too.
Members here urge everyone to
do their part to remember motorcycles are among them out there on
the busy highways and in the city
streets, too.

will be an afternoon of mini-project
workshops that can help 4th-6th
graders find ideas for 4-H exhibits.
It will be a fun-filled day, and in the
evening they will have dinner and a
movie. The cost for the event is $15
per member.
Shouly and Madelyn will be
researching ideas for a club t-shirt.

about putting the World Wear Project
information in the next newsletter.

That issue is reapportionment.
Several candidates for the Iowa
House and Senate last year emphasizedtheimportanceofhavingsome
control in the time of reapportionment.
A few weeks ago, the first plan
was introduced—called Plan A. It
had been anticipated that it would

lawmakers found it to be “acceptable.”

Revenue Sharing savings to the general checking account and reducing the Library appropriation to $500. Carried. It was moved, seconded
and carried to approve payment of Community
Center bills as presented, with the alliant bill being paid as funds are received.

prove a building permit to Todd Oftedahl for an
addition to his existing shop.

The E-NP district is currently
looking for replacement, engaging
a professional search group just as
it had when the school district hired
its high school principal a couple of
years ago.
Bendixen will continue on here
through the month of June and told
the school board Monday night
that she hopes she can be of some
help to her replacement if that
individual can be brought on board
expeditiously.

eldora City Council met in Regular Session
with Mayor Bob Jeske presiding. Council members Cindy Johns, Melody Hoy, Jack Brekke,
Dave Mitchell and Bob John were present. also
present were City administrator Bruce Bierma,
Interim City Clerk Carol Williams, City attorney
Marty Petersen, staff, residents and newspaper
reporter.
Mayor Jeske asked for a motion to accept
the Consent agenda. Council member Hoy so
moved, seconded by John. Consent agenda
consisted of the april 5th and 11th minutes, the
bills to be paid as presented, Class C Liquor
License renewal for eldora Firehouse Saloon &
grill, Class e Liquor License for eldora Hy-Vee
Food Store and rEsOLUTION NO. 5-16-2657

Period and Lea Babcock, Steve Throssel and
aaron Budweg spoke.
Mayor Jeske opened Old Business and
asked for a motion to introduce and adopt
rEsOLUTION NO. 5-16-2658 “rEsOLUTION
sETTINg FEEs FOr PErmITs, sErVICEs
aNd PLOTs”. Council member Hoy asked
that the fee for the Dog License be pulled until
it can be discussed some more. Council member Brekke so moved with the removal of the
dog license portion, seconded by Johns. Roll
call vote: “ayes”: Mitchell, John, Brekke, Johns,
Hoy; “nays”: none; absent: none. Motion carried
unanimously.
Mayor Jeske then opened New Business.
Mayor Jeske turned the meeting over to Tina
John who gave her presentation on the Depot
Project. after much discussion it was decided
to hold another meeting concerning the Depot
Project after more information is available.
Mayor Jeske advised the council there
would be another meeting this month for a Public Hearing and adoption of the Budget amendment. Council member Johns made the motion to set the Public Hearing date for May 17,
2016 at 6:00 p.m. seconded by council member
John. Motion carried unanimously.
The Department Heads in attendance gave
their reports. Council members gave their concerns at this time.
Mayor Jeske asked for a motion to go out
of Open Session and into Closed Session according to Code Section 21.5i. Council member
Johns so moved, seconded by council member
John. Motion carried unanimously, council went
into Closed Session at 7:44 p.m. Mayor Jeske
asked for a motion to go out of Closed Session
and into Open Session. Council member Johns
so moved, seconded by council member Mitchell, council went into Open Session at 8:14 p.m.
Motion carried unanimously.

musky is alive and doing well in
West Okoboji 25 years later,” said
Joe Larscheid, chief of the Iowa
DNR’sFisheriesBureau.
ThefishwaspurchasedbytheUpperGreatPlainsChapterofMuskies
Inc. in 1991 and stocked into West
OkobojiLakeinApril1992atanaveragelengthof12.7inches.
“Every muskellunge stocked in
the Iowa Great Lakes was batched
marked with a freeze brand so we
know what year and lake it was
stocked,”saidLarscheid.
A few years after being stocked,
the muskies grow large enough to
becaughtinthegillnetssetoutby
fisheriesstaffatnightinthespring.
All muskies caught during the gill
nettingseasonaretaggedwithaPassive Integrated Transponder (PIT)
tag, which uniquely identifies these
fish for life. “Everytime this fish is
caughtwerecordallinformationin
ourdatabasewhichallowsustolook
uptheindividualrecapturehistories
ofeachfishovertime,”addedLarscheid.
This 41.6 inch, 17.5 pound fish
was originally tagged in 1994 and
was recaptured in 1998, 2000 and
2006.Itisoneofthefirstgroupsof
muskiesheldoverthewinteratthe
hatchery then stocked in the Iowa
GreatLakesinthespring.“Basedon
thesuccessofthesefishweswitched
allofourmuskystockingssospring
yearlings which dramatically improvedthesurvivalandhealthofour
musky populations in Iowa,” Larscheidsaid.
“Tomyknowledge,thisfishisthe
oldestknown-agemuskellungeever
recapturedbyfisheriescrewsinthe
Midwest,”saidJonathanMeerbeek,
DNR fisheries research biologist.
Last year’s crews were impressed
withtheirrecaptureofa21year-old
41inchmalemuskellunge.“Recapturing a 25 year-old fish of known
ageisalmostunheardof,”Meerbeek
said.

CONRAD- A conference runnerup placing was posted by Ted Dunn
of South Hardin at the rainy North
Iowa Cedar League West Conference Golf Meet on the Oakwood
Golf Course here Monday.
Dunn and the entire field of 36
golfers battled wet and windy conditions over the 18-holes.
Dunn ended second-best by onestroke to Matt Roeding of Grundy
Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck, 78 to
79. Both carded a 40 first nine followed by a 38 for Roeding and 39
for Dunn. The South Hardin junior,
who was the conference champion
as a freshman, carded 10 pars. Roeding played the sixth-slot for GC/GR.
Grundy
Center/Gladbrook-Re-
inbeck dominated the conference
meet, claiming the team title by
30-swings with a 322 and had five of
the nine all-conference slots.
The AGWSR boys edged host
BCLUW for second, 352 to 354,
while South Hardin settled for fifth
at 362, just behind West Marshall’s
360.
The Cougars, without an all-conference linkster, had four finish in
the top 20 led by Jay Janssen 11th
and Alex Hames 13th. Janssen fired
an 86 with rounds of 46-40 and
Hames 87 with nines of 45-42. Jacob
Schachterle followed with an 89 for
16th and Keon Huffman 90 for 17th.
Schachterle opened with a 39, but
closed with a 50, and Huffman went
45 twice. Non-scoring were 97s for
Mike Krull (48-49) and Tyler Rose
(53-44).
“We hoped to give GC/G-R a run
for the title, but that did not happen.
We will take second and build on it
for the sectional meet,” commented
AGWSR coach Brad Hames.
“Jay continues to play well; very
consistent. Alex played pretty well;
he had two bad holes that ended up
costing him a medal. Jacob had a
great first round and really struggled
on the second nine, and Keon played
steady all day,” Hames added.
The Comets’ tandem of Lane
Stanley and Josh Sharp earned allconference honors. Stanley finished
fourth, carding an 81 and Sharp
ninth with an 84. Stanley had the
clubhouse lead after nine with a 38
followed by 43, and Sharp covered
the home course twice at 44-40.
“The weather conditions were tough,
but they were tough for everybody.
Lane has really been playing well
lately; it was great to see him keep
his concentration for 18- holes. I was
proud of the way Josh (Sharp) came
back from his first nine and got it
back on track on the back nine. He’s
had a great career as a Comet and it
was nice to see him make all-conference,” stated BCLUW coach Heath
Rhinehart.
Josh Myers and Brad Barkema
added top 20 placings for BCLUW
with Myers hitting 93 for 18th and
Barkema 96, tying for 19th. By nines
Myers went 46-47 and Barkema
50-46. Non-counting were Keegan
Rhinehart 99 (52-47) and Jonny Neff
115 (58-57).
Dunn’s second led South Hardin
and continued his stellar spring that
has four medalist honors and three
runner-up medalist in 10 meets.
“Ted had a nice round. Runner-up
medalist in this conference is a great
honor,” South Hardin coach Matt
Thompson said.
“We shot about our normal team
score. Most kids improved from the
front nine,” he added.
Hunter Welch was second for the
Tigers and tied for 14th at 88, going 47-41. Rounding out the foursome were Tom Haywood 96 with
back-to-back 48s and Cade Prosser
99 with nines of 49-50. Non-scoring
were Quinton Lake 101 (51-50) and
Spencer Higgason 120 (57-63).
Along with Roeding, all-conference from GC/G-R were Jesper Holke-Farman third at 79, Cam Murphy
fifth and Jake Bangasser sixth at 82
each and Jared Freeman eighth at
84. Murphy was last season’s league
runner-up.
The area boys will take part in sectional golf meets today (Friday).
South Hardin will take part in a
power-packed Class 2A meet at the
Legend Trail Golf Course in Parkersburg, BCLUW will host a Class
2A meet at Conrad’s Oakwood Golf
Course and AGWSR plays in a Class
1A meet at Belle Plaine.

The threesome battled through
rainy and windy conditions to finish
in the top nine of the 36-golfer field.
VanderWilt, a junior, was one of
five gals to break triple-digits, carding a 98 for fourth. She had a first
nine of 48 followed by a 50. Mathis,
a senior, took ninth with rounds of
51 and 50. Anderson, a sophomore,
rallied going from a 55 to 46 and
scored 101 to end eighth, edging
Mathis on a cardback.
Host Grundy Center/GladbrookReinbeck stole the show, capturing
the team crown and had five all-conference golfers.
The Spartans scored a 386 to better
the field by 33-strokes, while Kate
Ross was meet medalist, shooting
49-44 for 93 and Abby Hockemeyer
runner-up medalist, going 48-94 for
97.
The BCLUW girls earned second
in the team race, winning a tiebreaker with West Marshall after both
booked four-gal, 18-hole scores of
419.
South Hardin and AGWSR were
second division as the Tigers scored
449 for fifth and the Cougars were
sixth at 457.
Rounding out the all-conference
list were Reagan Derrick third at
97, Sarah Hockemeyer fifth at 98
and Jill Itzen sixth at 100, all from
GC/G-R, and West Marshall’s Madi
Stalzer seventh at 100.

chipped in a 112, going 55-57, for

was Sybil Below at 138 with nines

Heubner 143 (75-68) and Sammy
May 146 (76-70).
“Although the weather was poor,
the girls stepped up and played solid
golf as a team,” South Hardin coach
David Akers said.
“Hanna VanderWilt and Kristin
Mathis really fought through the
day, stayed away from big numbers
and came away with conference
medals. What a great honor and
motivator for those two girls as we
head into our first round of regionals
Monday,” added Akers.
AGWSR’s low score was posted
by Sophie Stahl at 112, followed
by 113s for Abbie Young and Mel
Morones. By nines, Stahl went 5359; Young 55-58 and Morones 5459. Rounding out the foursome was
Mollie Abkes at 119, going 58-51.
Non-counting were Mandy Willems
125 (60-65) and Taylor Hartwig 128
(65-63).
“The girls have played in some
hard weather this season and today
was no different. Most all the girls
shot at least one of their rounds
better than the last time we played
at Grundy Center,” said AGWSR

teams go one-two
MARSHALLTOWN- A one-two showing in
the team standings was posted by the South Hardin Trap teams during a dual with Central Iowa
Straight Shooters at the Marshall Gun Club Saturday.
South Hardin A-team finished first at 221 with
second at 213 scored by the South Hardin B-team.
Members of the A-team were Bridger Lawrence,
Cade Prosser, Trevor Sellers, Kaden Davis and
Peter Wiechmann. The B-team included Matthew
Wiechmann, Josh Jeske, Jacob VanDePol, Brandon
Meints and Tommy Platte.
Individual leaders for South Hardin were Davis
second at 47 and Sellers 46 for third, while Sarah
England lost a playoff and was third for the girls,
hitting 35. Cade Prosser and M. Wiechmann both
scored 45s.
For the South Hardin Middle School Trap, Shelby May and Meghan VanDePol took first and second, respectively, breaking 36 and 34, while South
