(JULY 3) AMES – Back in July
whenwordoftheirmergertalksfirst
went public, United Suppliers CEO
Brad Oelmann said the move was a
reflectionofthetimes.
“There is no longer $7 corn and
everything tightens in agriculture.”
Oelmann
did
stress
that
part of the merger proposal has
been a commitment to the three
communities involved.
That meant the home base of the
farm and food processor cooperative
Land O’Lakes – the Twin Cities
area.
In addition, the commitment
extended to Eldora and Ames, which
share the headquarters offices of
United Suppliers, he said.
Oelmann added, “Unfortunately

ELDORA – Sometimes you
have to look beneath the surface.
And if the surface is rust, you
have to scrape the surface and then
look.
Do that and you may find
some wonders of early 1900’s
engineering.
So say the volunteers at the
Hardin County Farm Musem,
where the machine shed is filled
with things like the potato planter
pictured to the right.
A modern potato planter surely
takes its directions from some
satellite overhead. Rows come out
straight as a laser.
This much, much older one took
its cues from a steady team of horses
and one quick handed operator.
No software involved, everything
was very hard ware and they didn’t
spare a pound of it.
So, if you come out to the Hardin
County Farm Museum for one of
their late season events coming up
September through October, stop at
the machine shed and take a look
around. Staff can tell you what
almost all of it is. And the rest is fun
(continued on page 3)
This is not an early-era bicycle with a quarter ton tote basket attached. It is a potato planter.
The wood bin held the potatoes, and on the tray in front of the rider is a conveyor geared to the
drive. The conveyor received the potatoes, which were placed one by one by the operator. They
dropped down the shoot and fell into a trench created by the cutting share at the bottom of the
unit. The trailing discs then covered the seed potato in the trench. Staff at the farm museum say
it’s a fine piece of engineering, though the seat cushion needs a little cushion-work.
Wellsburg Fall Fest promises fun and a birthday
(A host of other features
are planned as part of the
Wellsburg autumn community festival – including a celebration of Prohibition, or the lack thereof.
But one business and location in particular is commemorating a hundred
year milestone.)

WELLSBURG – On Saturday,
August 29, the Brick Bungalow will
be celebrating its 100th birthday,
and the public is invited to help
the bungalow bring in its biggest
birthday yet.
The business, run by Evie Haupt,
has been open since 2002, but the
bungalow itself is turning 100
years old. In order to celebrate
that milestone, there are many fun
activities planned for the day.
(continued on page 4)
Coming to Wellsburg’s Fall Festival will be a “celebration of Prohibition, Bootlegging and the cars of the time: During one of the
re-enactor group’s other area productions, they staged the infamous bank robbery in Steamboat Rock shown here. Pictured in the
car in the back is Behren and Burdette Walters. Shown the left car are Joerg and Aubri Rochlitzer, and shown in the car on the right
is Jim Hammann.

The Iowa Falls group now

Jobs data
for state
and county
HARDIN COUNTY – Iowa’s
seasonally adjusted unemployment
rate increased slightly to 3.8 percent
in July from 3.7 percent in June.
The state’s jobless rate was 4.3
percent one year ago. The U.S.
unemployment rate remained at 5.3
percent in July.
In Hardin County the rates so
far this yeara have ranged from 5.4
percent in January to 3.4 in may
and 3.6 in June. Breakdowns for
counties come out about a month
late. Statewide data for August will
be released on Friday, September
18, 2015. Local data for August will
be posted to the IWD website on
Tuesday, September 22, 2015
The number of unemployed
Iowans remained at 63,900 in July.
The current estimate is 10,300 lower
than the year ago level of 74,200.
The total number of working
Iowans decreased to 1,636,500 in
July. This figure was 4,000 lower
than June, and 4,100 higher than one
year ago.
Seasonally Adjusted Nonfarm
Employment
Total
nonfarm
employment
advanced by 8,100 jobs in July,
raising nonfarm employment to
1,577,400 jobs. The unexpectedly
large gain this month was primarily
the result of growth in private sectors
(+6,100). Both goods-producing
and service sectors advanced for
the third consecutive month, while
government added 2,000 jobs due
primarily to hiring at the local level.
Of the eleven super sectors, only two
pared jobs this month: professional
and business services (-2,700) and
trade and transportation (-900).
to guess about.
The potato planter. It is really the
essence of simplicity. The horses
pull and one operator takes the
comfortable seat shown toward the
left. The bin is filled with potatoes
and the operator need only keep
inserting them in a long auger that
takes them one at a time for planting,
If you look to the bottom you will
find the blade which opens the
furrow, the shoot through which the
potatoes drop one after another after
another, the discs which cover the
potato. And if this isn’t fascinating
enough out at the farm museum
you can find an equally heavy duty
apparatus created to harvest the
potatoes.
If it plants something, cultivates
something, harvests it or cleans it or
preps it for the kitchen, chances are
they have several hundred pounds of
it out in the collections of old farm

Wellsburg Fall Fest
Brick Bungalow celebrates 100 years
(continued from page 1)
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, the
Brick Bungalow will be holding an
open house at the shop. As an ode
to the bungalow’s beginnings in
1915, there will be a 1915 Model T
Ford on display out front, and two
bootlegger re-enactments; one at 2
p.m. and one at 4 p.m. Both are free
of charge.
The re-enactments are a fun way
to show what was going on during
the time period when the bungalow
was built, and one of those things
going on was the Prohibition. The
Prohibition began in 1919, a few
years after the bungalow was built,
and bootlegging soon became a
common practice in the area.
Aside from the Prohibition and
bootlegging era, the bungalow has
seen many things in its 100 years.
The little house has been home
to several families, and even
a beauty shop. Nowadays, the
bungalow houses a gift shop, which
sells everything from newborn to
retirement gifts.
The Brick Bungalow’s 100th
birthday celebration coincides with
the Wellsburg Fall Festival, which is
also on Saturday.
There will be several other events
going on around town, including
massages, an inflatable slide, a
petting zoo, a BBQ cook-off, wine
and beer tasting, bingo, several open
houses and plenty of food.

Help Calkins tag
migrating Monarchs
Hardin County Conservation will be hosting the annual Monarch
Butterfly Tagging event, at Calkins Nature Area on Tuesday,
September 8th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Bring the family out to
learn about monarch butterflies and get the opportunity to catch,
tag, and release your own monarch to send it on its migration
journey. There is NO preregistration for this event, it is open to
all ages, and it is free of charge. The monarch butterfly migrates
each year to the mountains and forests of Mexico where they
evade our northern winters. We tag the butterflies to monitor and
study how far they travel, where they start and end their journey,
and the question remains how this small creature navigates to
the same place every year. Calkins Nature Area is located west
of Iowa Falls, on 135th street, south of Highway D20. If you have
any questions you can call us at 641-648-9878 or email us at

that, how the merger shakes out for
individual workers won’t be known
until a number of months down the
road.
He had said that the merger, would
phase in with two distinct
transitions, and he said the impact
on specific job descriptions will
depend on how the two companies
mesh.
Oelmann said at that time some
workers might have to make choices
about those issues of location and
retraining.
Back in July he said many
industries tied to farming are in a
phase characterized by large-scale
consolidations similar to the United
Suppliers-Land O’ Lakes move.
He says this reflects economics
starting at the farm and going up the
ladder to wholesalers and retailers
who work with farmers.
United
Suppliers,
long
headquartered in Eldora, has
just in recent years been locating
administrative staff in offices in
Ames, too.
The wholesaler cooperative’s
roots trace to Eldora when it was
organized back to 1963.
Approximately 100 staff work
here in Eldora now.
About four years ago, the Eldora
co-op spun off its feeds division to

Letter to the Editor
Immigration. Good?
To the Editor:
Published statistics on the effects
of immigration show several important things. Among them are the effects on employment with emphasis
on the poor and under-educated.
Example There are many young
men who may have dropped out of
high school to help provide for the
rest of their family. They need a job.
They are not eligible for the “tech”
type jobs with high pay. Out of need
they are willing to take a lower pay
job.
Guess what? Our President gave
Congress “The Finger” and, by Executive Privilege, freed a million or
more immigrants … to take those
low-pay jobs. Why did he do that?
Because, by voting time, he will
have paved a way for them to vote
Democrat.
So … he added a million or so
Americans to the ‘unemployed’ list
and a million or so to the “created
jobs” list. What a guy …!! But wait
… he didn’t do that all by himself
… did he? ‘Course not. He has a devoted Democrat Administration supporting his deeds.
Remember being asked, “Are you
better off now?”

Iowa’s dove
season opens
September 1
DES MOINES- The secret to being a successful dove hunter is not
really a secret at all; bring plenty of
shells, a group of friends and hunt
the fields where doves are.
But finding those fields and knowing which fields doves are using
comes to scouting and putting in the
time before opening day.
“Scouting is the key,” said Todd
Bogenschutz, upland wildlife biologist with the Iowa Department of
Natural Resources. “Walk the prospective areas in the morning and at
night; make mental notes about how
the doves are coming into the field
and leaving the field. Keep in mind
where the sun will be at the time of
day you will be hunting to identify
the best location to set up.”
Successfully bagging doves is
not easy. In fact, hunting mourning
doves would be near the top on the
difficulty scale.
“They’re fast and agile. There’s
a reason the national average if 5-7
shells per dove,” Bogenschutz said.
Hunter can improve their shell-todove ratio by being more selective
in their shots and having the proper
choke in their gun.
Doves are a migratory game bird
and most of the migration – and
hunting – takes place during the first
few weeks of the season. This year,
the season opener – Sept. 1 – falls on
a Tuesday.
The dove season coincides with
summer-like weather, which is one
selling point for those new to hunting.
“Dove hunting would be great for
novice hunters because the weather
is nice, there’s a lot of shooting and
you don’t need a lot of equipment – a
bucket and a lot of shells,” he said.
Each spring, there is a window
when dove food plots must be planted for them to be usable for the fall
migration and unfortunately this
year, spring rains made that difficult
in parts of southern Iowa. Some of
those areas had winter wheat in case
sunflowers couldn’t be planted.
Doves like bare ground and prefer open landscapes and larger food
plots. If a sunflower plot is not available, try a weed patch or harvested
grain field.
Hunters looking to avoid the
crowds may want to hunt later in the
day. Areas that are full of hunters in
the morning may be empty in the afternoon. Where there may not be as
many doves on the area during the
afternoon, Bogenschutz said hunters
will likely have plenty of opportunities to big some doves.
The Iowa DNR has a list of public wildlife areas and private land
enrolled in Iowa Habitat Access
Program (IHAP) where dove plots
– primarily sunflowers – have been
added at www.iowadnr.gov/Hunting/MigratoryGameBirds/MourningDoves.
Hunters are reminded that although they do not need to pay the
state or federal migratory bird fee,
they are required to register with
HIP and to have the plug in their
gun to be legal. They must also use
nontoxic shot on public areas where
it is required for all hunting except
for deer and wild turkey. The areas
are listed on p. 17 of the Iowa hunting regulations (www.iowadnr.gov/
hunting).
Practice Safe Hunting – Hunters
will be trying to blend into the background so it’s important that they
know where each other are at all
times, stay within their zone of fire
and communicate during the hunt.
Late Summer Weather – Daytime temperatures can still be in
the 80s and mosquitoes and ticks
are still around. Remember to pack
bug spray, and if hunting during the
afternoon, sunscreen and plenty of
water for the hunter and dog. Be prepared to put doves in a cooler.
Spent Shells – Toss in a grocery
bag or two to pick up any trash including shell casings and leave the
area as good as or better than it was
found.
Shooting Hours and Big Limits
– Legal shooting hours for mourning
doves is one-half hour before sunrise
to sunset. These is a daily bag limit
of 15 doves with a possession limit
of 45. The season is Sept. 1-Nov. 9.
Tigers host AGWSR
in gridiron opener
LIPPERT GARNERS GOLD- Bethany Lippert of Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR garnered the gold medal during Monday’s running

ELDORA- A border battle between South Hardin and AGWSR will kickoff the gridiron campaign tonight (Friday) at 7 p.m. in Eldora.
The host Tigers and Cougars were both playoff qualifiers a year ago and
each looks to start the season on a winning note.
AGWSR started 1-0 a year ago, beating South Hardin, 19-6 in Ackley. The
Cougars registered a second straight nine-win fall while the Tigers finished
4-6.
“It will be another AGWSR team that is big and physical. They are not
very flashy, but will lineup and punch you in the mouth,” stated South Hardin
coach Barry Scott.
AGWSR is listed No. 3 in Class A in the pre-season poll released by the
Des Moines Register. The Cougars are one of four teams ranked in District 4
of Class A along with No. 1 Gladbrook-Reinbeck, No. 8 Wapsie Valley and
No. 10 Denver.
South Hardin scrimmaged at Hudson last Friday and Scott said it was a
learning experience. “I feel the kids overlooked the game and it was a good
wake-up call. We learned a lot; we have to have 11 guys going hard every
play on offense and defense.”
Scott was pleased with the Tigers’ pre-season. “We had an awesome preseason. We got a lot done. We have the physical ability, but we have to be
mentally tough.”
Both teams return powerful ground games. For the Tigers, senior Jordan
Wilkie was the leading rusher a year ago with 752 yards and had another 206
yards on 18 receptions. Senior Bridger Lawrence rushed for 264 yards and
had 101 receiving. The Cougars’ backfield will feature seniors Levi Stockdale and Josh Balvanz along with junior Mason Eilderts. The three rushed
for over 2,400 yards last fall led by Stockdale’s 1,437. Stockdale found the
end zone 21 times.
The Class 2A Tigers will play a second border battle in week two at Grundy Center, another Class A opponent. AGWSR’s home opener in Ackley will
be against Hudson Sept. 4.
Area games slated for tonight will be BCLUW hosting Green MountainGarwin in Conrad, Iowa Falls-Alden at Hampton-Dumont and Grundy Center at Montezuma.
BCLUW will look to halt a seven-game losing skid against the neighboring Wolverines.
The Comets were a 42-14 winner over GM-G to open last fall under then
first-year head coach Anthony Jahr. BCLUW followed that by beating East
Marshall and then lost the next seven Fridays.
Cadets’ Lippert 1st
at IF-A Invitational
HAMPTON- A sweep of first
and second by Bethany Lippert and
Aubrie Fisher highlighted the host
Cadets’ showing at the Iowa FallsAlden Cross Country Invitational at
Mayne’s Grove Monday.
Lippert garnered the gold medal
with a run of 20:58 over the girls’
new distance of 3.1-miles. Lippert,
a junior, was a state meet qualifier
last fall with the girls ran 2.5 miles.
Fisher, a freshman, scored the silver
at 21.29.
Humboldt behind five runners in
the top 10 was a run-away winner
in the team race, tallying 29 points.
IF-A/AGWSR was second at 72
with Clear Lake’s 82 third in the
SH girls in XC
state ratings
ELDORA- The South Hardin girls’
cross country team will start the season state-ranked at No. 14 in Class
2A. Rankings were released by the
Iowa Track Coaches Association recently.
The Tigers ended 13th in the 2A
portion of the state meet last fall and
capturing five team titles during the
season, including the conference
meet and a state-qualifier meet.
The South Hardin girls and boys
will host the Pine Lake Run Thursday, Sept. 3 at the Pine Lake Country
