what their plans for dinners
will be and what the prom
experience is going to be like.
But our Tennessee High
School teachers already know;
years ago they actually went
to prom too!
Mrs. Beth, THS’s
librarian, told about her prom
experience at Gate City High
School.
There was a junior Prom
and a Senior Banquet; Mrs.
Beth attended both.
For the after party, she
says that the girls would get
together and have a pajama
party.
At the Senior Banquet they
had dinner and danced.
This is very different from
now, when students gather
into groups and make dinner
reservations restaurants in
the Tri-Cities.
Mr. Quales, THS’s art
teacher, went to prom three
times at Virginia High School.
He and his date, who happens to
be his wife, went in a group like
students do today.
When it comes to after prom
plans, Quales said, “ Some
people were partyin’; some were
chillin’.”
He also said that, “I was
present at the party, but I wasn’t
with the party people.”
Coach Roberts attended DobynsBennett High School.
He went to his senior
prom, but he did not like the
dressing up and didn’t like
prom in general.
He and his date went in a
group to dinner in Kingsport
at Skoby’s and they took
pictures at both of their
houses.
For his junior prom, he
ended up standing up his
date to go play baseball.

Mrs. Brinser, a secretary at
THS, went to THS’s prom.
Her group of three or four
people went out to dinner,
but they did not take
pictures.
While discussing after
party plans, Mrs. Brinser
exclaims,“NEVER!”with a
mischievious grin.

Clyde A. Erwin High School
in North Carolina.
She did not go to dinner
or have pictures before
because their school did that
at the Prom, which was held
at their high school.
All of the senior class
was really close, and
afterwards they all went out
for breakfast.

Yearbooks were distributed to Tennessee High
School on April 21.
The books were preordered and there are a limited
number of extra copies still available, so if you forgot
to purchase one at the beginning of the term, you
still have a chance to own your personal copy of this
year’s 2009-2010 cadmea.
Yearbook editors, Nidhi Desai and Arynn
Carswell, reviewed the books for mistakes and
prepped them for distribution. Next year, the
yearbook will be in the hands of Aaron Haynes and
Morgan Johnson.
If you’re interested in purchasing a book you can
contact Mrs. Vickers. The books are $70 and all checks
should be made out to THS.
Tennessee High School is holding a clothes drive from
April 19 through May 7 to collect clothes for the Salvation
Army.
If you have any clothes that are too small or that you do
not want anymore, bring them to your second period class.
Make sure the garments are still in good shape.
“The clothes that we need most are summer clothes,
accessories, and shoes,” says senior Nidhi Desai, who is
helping organize this clothing drive. Bathing suits and
under garments are the only clothes that are unacceptable,
for sanitary reasons.
The second period with the most clothing each week
during the drive will receive donuts from Blackbird
Bakery as a reward.

Got Talent

On Friday, April 11, Tennessee High hosted its eleventh
talent show. Teresa Kennedy, Spanish teacher, and Doris
Peters, Tennessee High’s Program Director, organized the
event. “Each person who performs in the show is already a
winner,” Mrs. Peters said. The show consisted of comedy acts,
but music took the stage with performances of songs in nearly
every genre.
The show’s winners were announced the next night via the
school’s Facebook page. The winners were:

“Chris and I were so nervous the days leading up to the
show, but we had such a great time and now I wish we could
do it again!” Chelsea Green said about the experience.

The Limestone Masonry workers have
been busy fixing the stair steps outside of the
auditorium at the front of Tennessee High School.
According to the workers, they will remove the old
bricks, clean them, and then reuse them because
these bricks are genuine and non- replaceable.
“This will keep them [students] from tripping
and falling when they run out of school in the
afternoon,” worker Heath Springer said.
Their work began on April 20, and they are still
in the process of removing bricks so that they can
re-align them.

Drunk driving awareness has hit Tennessee
High School. During the week of April 19-23, the Bristol
Tennessee Police and Fire Departments and the junior
class sponsored times for students to wear DUI goggles
and use the DUI simulator. Firefighters used various tools
to demonstrate how they extract a trapped victim from an
automobile.
Caring teachers and administrators hope these
activities will make a positive difference. “I hope that
this week somehow convinces students that their driving
behavior correlates directly with life and death. I drive by
a teen death site everyday; fake flowers in the roadside
weeds represent a teenager who is now dead,” says THS
teacher Mrs. Sutherland.
Her hope matches that of many who have
experienced the harmful effects of drunk driving in
their life. According to Students Against Drunk Driving
statistics, 346 THS students could have possibly consumed
alcohol in mild to excessive amounts. It takes just one
drunk driver to kill or be killed.

with ice causing there to be less of the drink you actually

When measured out, it was determined that Bojangle’s and

only come across one

buy? Sticking to these
rules can help you save
time at the store and
ensure that you look
good on the beach, at

1. Apple Shaped (Widest in the stomach/torso area)
Try a one piece with a bit of spandex or lycra in your bigger areas.
This can tighten your body and make you look slimmer. Draw
attention to your best assets. Long legs? Find a suit that has a high
cut on the thigh, or find a design that accentuates your upper half
and distracts from your middle. Avoid bikinis.
2. Pear Shaped (Bigger on the bottom)
Mix and match bikinis so that you have a solid colored, darker
bottom with a lighter colored, patterned top (be sure the colors
match). This will draw attention to your top half rather than
the bottom. Avoid boyshort bottoms. These seem to offer more
coverage, but they actually draw the eye to the lower half.
3. Short
A one piece is most recommended but special bikinis may work as
well. Find something that is cut high on the hips so that your legs
look longer. Avoid anything “low-rise”.
4. Tall/Long Torso
Try either a bikini of tankini. Try to avoid a huge block of torso.

Local Legends: Jesus Man
Avery Hall
Who’s got two license plates and loves his religion? Jesus Man! The orange
clad missionary, named Kenneth, wanders around on foot or by bike flashing his
“Jesus is Lord” license plates.
Come rain or snow, sleet or hail, this man is out and about doing drive-by
conversions.
Respected by many, he sleeps in many local churches, and on Sunday,
attends the next on his list. He doesn’t mind differences in the denominations, he
said, but simply wants to hear the word of Jesus Christ. He lived in Knoxville since
birth until 23 years ago when his mother died and he moved up to Bristol. Speech is
a constant challenge for Kenneth, due to the fact he has 20% hearing in one ear and
around 10% in another. When asked why he does, what he does he simply replied,
“I want to help people.” Although soon after, he detailed that he was inspired by a
previous license plate-bearing disciple.
So, he may not be the Second Coming, but he sure is working the rest of
Bristol, Tennessee, into a religious high and his integrity is unsurpassed.

I really love having a tan. Tanning beds are the easiest way to
get dark,” explained THS junior Bri Leonard.
There are some healthier alternatives that tanners may like
to try to get that sought after golden glow. Electric Sun offers
a spray tan and many drug stores have rub on lotion tanners.
These options could help you to preserve your health while
getting the beach-ready look.
If you hadn’t noticed, morp is prom spelled backwards, which is exactly what it stands for, a backwards prom. It is held for all those nonprom goers on prom night and, no, its not a party for rejects, it’s a group of friends wanting to have some inexpensive fun.
Three sophomores, Hunter Wingate, Sue Ahmud, and Caroline Powers, who are not attending prom said, “People at prom are going to wish they were us!”

So if you don’t plan on attending prom on April 24, then organize an adventure or outing with your close friends, and maybe you’ll end up having a

Prom night is what most
high school students dream
about starting freshman year.
However, after you’ve danced
the night away and your shoes
are making your feet hurt, it’s
time to make an exit. AfterProm celebrations are half the
fun.
Sleepovers are the most
common after-prom activity,
but make sure they don’t get
boring. Prom is supposedly
the best night of your high
school years, so make sure you
and your friends have plenty
to do all night. Fix a massive
spread of finger foods or even
a giant cookie cake. After
burning up the dance floor all
night, the munchies attack
with a vengeance.
As summer approaches
and the weather gets warm,
camping is super fun after
prom. If you can, go to the
lake and camp with a group of
friends...

Prom night has many
options, and these are just
a few. If things don’t go
according to plan, don’t
freak out. They hardly ever
go perfectly, just be prepared

I’ve always heard stories
about how prom can be a
stressful time, but I didn’t
expect deciding on a prom
group to be more difficult than
finding the perfect dress or
cutest pair of shoes.
About a month ago, my
boyfriend and I were groupless.
We had ideas of whom we would
go with, but we hadn’t set
anything in stone.
It was about this time
that my friend, we’ll call her
Elizabeth, asked if we would
like to join her group.
Now, Elizabeth has always
been one of my best friends, so
it was an easy yes.
Everything was coming
together; the reservations were
made, the location for pictures
was set, and after prom plans
were decided.
A few weeks later, I found
out the final list of people in
our group. My boyfriend and I
had no problems with our fellow
group mates, believe me, but
none of them were his close
friends.
This brought up a bit of
an issue. I had made the
decision that with this being
my boyfriend’s senior prom, I
wanted him to be able to spend
it with his friends.
As this issue came up, my
other best friend, we’ll call this
one Gayle, decided she wanted
to go to prom.
Having talked with Gayle
about prom, I asked her what
group she was in. It turned out
that the group she was in was
the same group my boyfriend’s
best friend was in.
That decided it for the both
of us. He dealt with getting us
in the best friend group, and I
had the not so looked forward
to task of telling Elizabeth we
would be ditching her.
After some people dealing,
it all worked out well. My
boyfriend and I are a part of
a group with people we both
enjoyed.
My advice for anyone trying
to avoid prom group drama is
good luck.
For me, I don’t feel this
could have been avoided. But, I
do wish everyone luck avoiding
as much drama as possible.
Another piece of advice,
make sure that the group you
plan to be a part of is a group
you and your date both mesh
well with.

Senior Goalkeeper John Turnbull
Prepares for a Punt!
Sports
This tennis season so far has gone very
well for both the men and women’s teams.
The men won their first six games to start off
the season led by juniors, Connor Knox and
Owen Rockett. The girls went 4-2 in their first
six games and is led by senior standout Nidhi
Desai. On this year’s team there are five seniors.
Three of them play on the girl’s team while
Kathik Venkataraman and John Cowan are the
two seniors on the men’s team. Out of these
five seniors, Grace is the only one who plans to
continue playing tennis at the collegiate level.
Karthik is the team motivator because of the
intense pep speeches he gives before matches.
“This year I want us to play to the best of our
abilities, destroy Science Hill both times in the
regular season, and win a state championship,”
he said when naming what he hopes to
accomplish this year.
Nihdi said, “Science Hill is the team to beat
in our conference, and they are very tough, but
if we work hard enough we can beat them.”
The district tournament will be held at Science
Hill on May 7. If the teams do well enough at
districts and at regionals, they will play in the
state match on May 25 through 28.

Viking Baseball
Spring is here and one of the biggest
sports to watch at Tennessee High
School is baseball.
So far it seems the season has been
pretty successful. The THS baseball
team was ranked number 5 in the Big
8 Conference pre-season and Coach
Payne is impressed with their 11-1
record thus far as well as having also
tied for first in the Big 8.
However, just being able to play
baseball is not the only factor in the
game. Coach Payne says, “I like this
team a lot. They have great character,
attitude, and chemistry.” Playing as a
team effects the success of a team just
as much as skill and ability does. Our
baseball team clearly demonstrates
the importance of all aspects in order
to win. The schedule is on the THS
website. So everyone should go check
it out and support our Tennessee High
baseball team!

As prom approaches and many kids are
completing their checklist of tasks to complete prior
to April 24,there is a key thing that many have left
out-dance moves. Many students don’t have the right
moves or know how to participate in the line dances,
so here is a crash course on a couple of songs that will
most definitely blare through the speakers of Viking
Hall.
Crank Dat- Soulja Boy
Crank Dat came on the scene in 2007 and blew
up the charts. This song dominated radio station
airwaves, dance clubs, and locker rooms across the
country. It became a You Tube sensation and everyone
and their grandma learned to Crank Dat across the
living room floor. Since a couple of years have passed
since the song was released many have forgotten the
moves prom-goers should refresh their memory.
Cha-Cha Slide
DJ Casper created the cha-cha slide as a
revamped version of the electric slide. Everyone
remembers learning this dance during gym class in
elementary school. This dance is a great icebreaker
because to the partygoer’s advantage, it calls out the
next move. As cheesy as the dance may seem ,it is
a fan favorite at Tennessee High School that always
brings crowds to the floor.
Jerk-The New Boys
Jerkin’ is a dance movement that started in Los
Angeles in late 2008. In 2009, the movement reached
the East Coast. This song also contains several other
moves too, like the reject, dip and pin drop.
Hot Diggity Dog!
Often overlooked and under-recognized in the food world is the
humble hot dog. Simple, yet delicious, they offer a cheap, filling,
American snack. The quest for the best dog in Bristol saw many
different types of wieners, toppings, and methods of preparations.
While every dog we tasted performed well, some distanced themselves
from the pack in different areas.

1) Ballpark Corner Market
The wiener here was average while the chili was outstanding. It has
a great texture throughout and really good chili, maybe just a tad runny
though but very good. The price for this dog rang up as the cheapest at just
over a dollar. If you are looking for a quick dog with excellent chili this is
your place.
2) Corner Dog House
The Dixie Dog at the Corner Dog House, which has been a steady hot
dog producer in Bristol for a while, was by far the most outstanding wiener. I
really enjoyed the crispier texture on the outside from when they deep-fried it.
If you are looking for an excellent wiener, decent price, and a bite of Bristol’s
history, then you need to stop by the Corner Dog House. The only knock on
the Dixie Dog was that it was small and I would recommend getting at least
two (maybe four or five if your name is Alex Taylor). This is a great place to
stop if you want to get your money’s worth in quality but be prepared to wait
a little longer than expected.
3) Hot Dog City
This is a small hot dog stand across from Haynesfield elementary .The
service, wiener, and chili were all average. The convenience of this stand is
what sets it apart: pull up, pick your dog, and walk away. This stand offers a
great choice if you are in the mood for a heavy snack but need to get it on the
run.
4) Hot Dog It!
Friendly service, gargantuan proportions, and good food put Hot Dog
It! near the top in most categories. This place definitely had hands down the
customer service.
The wholesome atmosphere was a welcome relief from the bustle of life, and
the food was of good quality. All the sides were homemade, but the real
defining characteristic of Hot Dog It! was their abundance of chili on a single
hot dog. If you are looking for a great place to enjoy good food, relax, and
more than likely stuff yourself to the brim ,then Hot Dog It! is for you.
5) Pal’s
The real surprise of the competition, Pal’s, brought an excellent
offering. They had a solid wiener, awesome chili, and quick service. Next
time you are at the ever-popular drive thru, grab a chilidog; it will surprise
you coming from a restaurant usually known for Sweet Tea and Frenchie
Fries. The chili had a very good texture to it, not too runny and not too thick.
6) Rocks Produce and Deli
This was the real hidden treasure of our competition. Tucked away
out of knowledge of most Bristolians, Rock’s produce and Deli surpassed all
other dogs in this race claiming best overall with more than a healthy chance
at stealing every category. This simple store may not appear to be much, but
it will knock your socks off with outstanding chili and a perfectly prepared
wiener. The texture of the hot dog was very good all the way through and the
chili was absolutely amazing with just the right amount of spiciness to it. The
owners of the store are also very friendly and the price is a great bargain for
such a good hot dog. Though it may be out of the way, Rock’s Produce Deli is
definitely worth the effort, time and money to taste this supreme dog.
7) Tootie’s
Tootie’s offered a solid dog with decent chili. The dog was prepared
excellently with a good texture, and the chili had the perfect amount of flare
to it to get your attention yet still complement the dog. This is a great stop
for this summer on the way to the lake as it is on the way out of town and it
offers good service and good food.
