what is fringe
How Fringe Got Started
Fringe theater is a tradition that
started in Edinburgh, Scotland in
1947 when eight performing groups
were excluded from the mainstream
annual arts festival. They decided to
perform anyway, finding inexpensive
or free venues on the fringes of the
city. The Edinburgh Fringe Festival
has since grown into one of the largest
arts festivals in the world, eclipsing the
original festival exponentially.
Great ideas spread. We launched the
first New Orleans Fringe Festival in
November 2008, and each year, New
Orleans shows that it loves fringe
theater. ‘Course, New Orleans seems
to be a pretty good place for freewheeling and scrappy creative madness
to happen, yes?
How Performers Participate
Performers can participate in the New
Orleans Fringe in Fringe-managed
venues or Bring Your Own Venues.
The groups performing in Fringemanaged venues applied to participate
in the festival during our open
application process. This year, 140
groups from New Orleans, across
the US, and internationally applied
with an incredible and broad range
of creativity. In order to evaluate this
outpouring of performance, Fringe has
designed a peer review process that is
fair, systematic and based on the weight
of the work – accomplished local artists
who represent the diverse performance
disciplines and faces of New Orleans
individually evaluate the applications
for artistic merit and fringiness. Using
those evaluations, Fringe organizers
create the line-up of 24 groups that

Bring Your Own Venues (BYOV)
are productions in venues that are
organized and run by the performing
artists themselves – truly do-it-yourself
theater that Fringe encourages and
nurtures alongside our managed
venues. BYOVs provide great flexibility
for Fringe artists to define their own
performance environment and push
the limits of traditional theater. This
year, Fringe is thrilled to have over 50
BYOV groups performing throughout
the city in traditional theaters as well as
in site-specific locations.

Fringe cover girls
This year’s Fringe cover girls are Emilie Whelan and Karen Kern, riding under the
Rusty Rainbow and into the stage lights, on the back of Hot Tub the diamondback
terrapin...and with a joyful flutter of their fans, they unleash our sixth wild flood of
weird fresh original fun for our neighborhoods, Bywater, Marigny, Central City, and
points beyond. Off the leash again.
Fringe - New Orleans Fringe - is a celebration that our whole community brings
forward. Every year, we celebrate the indomitable scrappy spirit that is New Orleans.
Fearless performers, fearless audiences, and a flood of fearless community spirit and
participation - these are the forces that drive us forward and fill our hearts. You’re
gonna see and hear things that you don’t see and hear every day.
Cheers and our very best to you and yours...the Fringe Team. Enjoy.

Life is tough,
death is tougher.
Picture a not so
distant Apocofuture. An oppressed minority,
“the living dead”
walk amongst us,
and they are very
unhappy.
Society wont accept
them, the religious
condemn their existence and they’re utterly ignored by cab
drivers. These recently deceased are faced
with a choice: Stumble alone or unite and
walk amongst us. 14+ only.
