The bill increases animal fighting offenses to a crime of the second degree; also provides for seizure & forfeiture of assets or property and increases the civil penalty for all of the animal fighting offenses. Eating Without Compassion RESTAURANT SERVED WHALE MEAT FROM ENDANGERED SPECIES The Hump, a trendy restaurant in Santa Monica, CA was charged with serving meat from an endangered sei whale. They consequently closed their doors in March. The undercover investigation began in Oct. 2009 by members of the team that made the Oscar-winning film “The Cove”. Dr. Scott Baker, a cetacean specialist at Oregon State Unviersity performed a DNA test of the meat and confirmed its source as a sei whale from JAPAN’s controversial “RESEARCH WHALING PROGRAM”. The Hump, along with its parent company, Typhoon Restaurant and one of its chefs, Kiyoshiro Yamamoto, were charged with the illegal sale of a marine mammal product, a misdemeanor offense that carries a federal prison sentence of one year and a $100,000 fine for an individual and $200,000 for an organization. Dr. Baker has also traced whale meat purchased at a restaurant in Seoul, South Korea – traced to the Japanese “RESEARCH WHALING PROGRAM”. According to the Animal Welfare Institute, it was announced that the charges may be dismissed without prejudice – which means it could be re-filed at a later date. ANIMALS in the NEWS PIT BULLS ROUNDED UP ACROSS U.S. BOUND FOR DOG FIGHTING IN MEXICO A routine traffic stop of a cargo van in Buena Park, CA led to the rescue of a dozen pit bulls that were headed to Mexico for dog fighting. These people had been all over the U.S. picking up dogs. The dogs were turned over to the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority who traced many of the pit bulls through implanted microchips as being owned by “notorious dog fighters”; some with felony convictions. The van’s driver & passenger were not arrested; however, as This young pup was being trained to authorities said, they worked for a fight. When he lost out, we found him, legitimate animal delivery service. gave him necessary medical care, hugs & The men made stops in Alabama, kisses, and he was eventually adopted! Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey, Kansas City, Seattle & Long Beach to pick up dogs. The dogs range in age from puppies to 3 years old. RESTAURANTS USE CRUEL ARCADE-STYLE MACHINE FOR “LOBSTER ZONE” GAME Several restaurants throughout the country have instituted the “Lobster Zone”… a cruel arcade-style contraption that allows patrons to pluck a lobster out of a machine using a controlled crane with an attached claw. Once caught, the lobster is dropped down a chute, boiled or cut up while still alive & then eaten. Patrons have reported seeing lobsters languishing in a tank & trying to flee as they were chased by the metal claw. For those who wish to e-mail these restaurants, log on to PETA’s website & go on to the Action Alerts. The restaurants are: The Beach Club – Long Beach, California – Owner, Steve Hoy Walk-On’s – Baton Rouge, Louisiana – Owner, Brandon Landry Next Door Pub – Lake Geneva, Wisconsin – Owner, Chad Bittner San Pedro Fish Market – San Pedro, California-Owner, Tom Amalfitano FUDDRUCKERS TO OFFER EXOTIC LINE OF BURGERS Fuddruckers has introduced the second in its line of exotic burgers. They have an elk burger which joins the bison burger. Newspaper reports indicate that Fuddruckers will offer an ostrich burger within the next few months. PET SUPPLIER EMPLOYEE BASHES HEADS OF HAMSTERS Sun Pet, a supplier of animals to PetSmart and PETCO, was given a $3,000 suspended fine and given 2 years probation from the Georgia Dept. of Agriculture. According to PETA, an undercover investigator took video footage of one of the animal dealer’s employees stuff hamsters in a bag & bash them against a table in an attempt to kill them. The employee has since been fired. The investigator also found other animals being abusively handled & warehoused in horrendous conditions. The U. S. Dept. of Agriculture noted that there were repeat violations of federal law which they had been warned about in February 2009. PETA has the video of the hamster-bashing on their website. HOMELAND SECURITY WANTS TO PURCHASE 3,000 DOGS FROM BREEDERS The U. S. Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that it will be buying 3,000 dogs from breeders so that it will increase its force of canines to sniff out explosives, cash, drugs, etc. The pet overpopulation is causing the death of millions of dogs and yet DHS wants to pay for breeders to produce more dogs. There are thousands of dogs languishing in animal shelters who would be great, devoted dogs in such a program. According to PETA, about 20% of dogs selected for service programs successfully complete the training program so this plan could actually result in another 15,000 dogs ending up homeless. The New England Assistance Dog Services & several police departments use wonderful dogs from animal shelters & breed rescue groups. Please contact DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano at U. S. Dept. of Homeland Security, Washington, DC 20528 or e-mail the hotline for Waste or Abuse at [email protected] There is a Citizen Line for Comment at: 202-282-8495 NJ INCOME TAX CHECK-OFF OPTION FOR ANIMAL POPULATION CONTROL The Animal Population Control Program (APC) will become one of NJ's Income Tax Check-Off Options! Over 37,000 dogs & cats are euthanized every year in NJ animal shelters and pounds. The NJ Dept. of Health & Senior Services APC Program uses the services of over 175 participating veterinary hospitals to provide spay/neuter services at either $10 or $20 for animals owned by persons on public assistance programs or those who have adopted pets from NJ animal shelters/pounds & rescue groups. The current demand for these services far exceeds the funding from the Animal Friendly License Plate sales & dog licensing surcharge fees. Your contributions in the Income Tax Check-Off box will help to spay/neuter more animals & will reduce the number of animals euthanized in NJ shelters & pounds. www.ahscares.org 3 ANIMALS in the NEWS domestic violence Animal Abuse on the Internet Tyquell Washington, 21, of Neptune Township, N J was charged with promoting dogfighting after police learned he was using the internet to orchestrate fights. Washington’s two dogs were confiscated & brought to the local SPCA. A group of scammers have started placing ads for “free to a good home” puppies/dogs on the internet. Once the contact is made, the person offering the animal requests that money be wired to cover transportation costs, etc. A similar variation includes people who claim to be a rescue group that have saved dogs from a puppy mill & need donations for food or homes, etc. The scam, which has shown up on Craigs List, has surfaced in Oregon and New Jersey and probably in several other states. Sadly, the anonymity of the internet has created many illegal uses with animals as victims. The internet has facilitated the trading of wildlife which has had a devastating effect on animals & ecosystems worldwide according to a spokesman for the International Fund for Animal Welfare. There are advertisements selling endangered species or products derived from their slaughter. Live tiger cubs, leopard pelts, rhino horns, medicinal products from bears & tigers are just some of the items that can be purchased. The U. S. was a major culprit as the source of over 70% of advertisements, followed by Britain & China. NO PLAYTIME FOR POOCHIES AT THESE PLACES! QUEENS - FRENCH BULLDOG DIES AFTER TRANSPORT HOME BY DOGGIE LOVE PET SITTER Bankers Laura Garner & Robert Hardon of Manhattan entrusted their 5 year old French Bulldog, Percy, to Doggie Love in Astoria, Queens, NY for one night. According to the NY POST, the dog sitters let Percy overheat in the back of a van & then returned him to the owner’s Upper West Side apartment. The doorman & a federal judge who lives next door asked if they could get the dog water or call a vet. When the owner’s returned home, Percy was found dead in front of an air conditioner a few hours later. A veterinarian who checked the dog a few hours later advised that the body temperature was “notably high”. Garner/Hardon are suing for $1 million in damages. Doggie Love owner Nilo Mathias told the couple that “sometimes, dogs just die”. Another of Doggie Love’s owners, Maria Abrams, allegedly said: “What do you want from us? The person in question no longer works for me. I’ve always wanted to be a story in the NEW YORK POST”. BROOKLYN – BARK & PLAY BOARDING FACILITY CHARGED WITH ANIMAL CRUELTY Matthew Soto, co-owner & daily manager of Bark & Play, a dog boarding facility & day care facility in Brooklyn, NY was arrested & charged with 5 counts of animal cruelty for severely neglecting several dogs boarded at the kennel. An investigation revealed that the facility was housing dogs in unextremely unsanitary conditions. They were left unattended in poorly ventilated areas saturated with urine & feces. Two pit bulls, Tango and Sweet, were at the kennel from a local rescue group. They were underweight, with severe urine burns as well as other conditions of neglect & were brought to the ASPCA for emergency vet care. Since the seizure in June, Bark & Play has closed its doors to the public. PET MED PURCHASES FROM ONLINE PHARMACIES When buying medication for your pets, the Food & Drug Administration has found unscrupulous Internet businesses selling counterfeit, outdated, mislabeled & incorrectly formulated animal medications. In order to protect yourself and your pet, order from a website that belongs to a Vet-VIPPS accredited pharmacy. The Veterinary Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites is a voluntary accreditation program that the National Assoc. of Boards of Pharmacy began offering last year. Companies earning this seal of approval meet strict criteria, including federal & state licensing & inspection requirements. Only a few businesses have gone through accreditation according to DOG FANCY. To see those listed on their website, go to www.nabp.net. For more information about purchasing pet medicines from e-pharmacies, visit www.fda.gov/animalveterinary or call 240-276-9300. 4 HUMANE NEWS October 2010 NEW YORK Emmit, a 10 pound Yorkshire Terrier owned by actress Ashley Yeater, was brutally kicked & pummeled by her boyfriend, a combat Marine named Joseph Graves. The dog lost an eye & suffered 6 broken ribs. In a no-jail plea deal, the 30 year old Graves pleaded guilty & must serve 200 hours at an animal welfare organization & attend weekly counseling. The deal leaves him without a record. Yeater walked out, hand-in hand, with Graves and said the following to the NEW YORK POST: “What he did was wrong, & he has said he’s sorry. But society really has to get its priorities right. I mean, THIS IS JUST A DOG.” NORTH CAROLINA After an argument with his wife, 24 year old Tony Brian Knolle set fire to Red, a 9 week old puppy. The animal is doing well at the Cumberland County Animal Services & Director John Lauby said there have been so many offers of adoption that the ONLY FAIR WAY WOULD BE A RAFFLE TYPE DRAWING!!!! Knolle was released from the Cumberland County Detention Center on $3,000 bond. CONNECTICUT A new program provides temporary housing for pets of people facing crisis situations such as domestic violence & long term hospital stays. For more information, contact CT SafePet at Our Companions Domestic Animal Sanctuary in Bloomfield at 860-242-9999. NEW JERSEY Gordon Reibman, 60, of Hamilton Township was indicted on charges of aggravated assault for the domestic violence attack on his wife and third degree animal cruelty for the beating death of Renny, the family’s pet greyhound. Police took another dog from the residence. Reibman is a $100,000+ educational program development specialist for the state’s Juvenile Justice Commission. PENNSYLVANIA Matthew Mulch beat an 8 month old Cocker Spaniel puppy to death with a metal tool after an argument with his girlfriend. The court sentenced Mulch an 8 to 23 months in count prison. PENNSYLVANIA Charles Cleaver, 37, of Dilliner came home from a bar about 2;30 a.m. & asked his wife for his .22 caliber rifle. He then shot the cat as it played with a toy nearby & then threw the still-moving cat outside of their mobile home. Cleaver has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled for trial. The Society operates a “Safe Haven Project” for pets in situations where domestic violence has been clearly identified, and who need immediate transfer/placement for their safety. Sadly, many owners are terrified of leaving their pets behind for fear of retribution to the animals. Statistics have shown that abusers commit violent acts against pets to control or punish another in the household. Social workers or others involved in cases of domestic violence who have concerns for the pets in the home should contact Roseann Trezza at the Society at (973) 824-7080. ENTHUSIASTIC ANIMAL LOVERS TAKE ON DAILY DOG-WALKING PROGRAM AT POPCORN PARK more SOCIETY NEWS TENDER LOVE FROM VH-1's "TOUGH LOVE" HOST JOANN WARD JoAnn gives a hug to "Hoochie Mama" who is waiting for a lifetime commitment. She came in with MoJo, her canine companion, who has been adopted. Mama has been at the Society since November 2009. File L18771-F (Forked River). PHOTO SUPPLIED From left to right, Lisa Flynn, Lauren Dezzi, Louise Denecke, Joann Ward, Sandy Hickman and Katy Brown. MIssing is Nancy Puleo who has played a huge part in making this program a success. Several months ago, Zoo Director John Bergmann & Board Member Barbara Lathrop met with personnel at the Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter concerning a dog system at the Society’s Forked River location. Under Barbara’s aegis, they also met with Lisa Flynn who volunteers at an Ocean County shelter to use as a model for the dogs at Popcorn Park. Lisa and some of her staff joined Popcorn Park to help train new volunteers . Sandy Hickman started Facebook and is also continuing to train volunteers. With the dogwalking program, the dogs receive one-on-one walks so their energy level is diminished and this “time out” helps in coping with the depression and despair that many of them experience while waiting for adoption. The dogs come in as strays, victims of abuse, unwanted, owners who are evicted . Their time at our shelter can be traumatic & stressful. Under this program, they can socialize with their walker to help soothe their fears during their stay until a forever home is found. JoAnn Ward, host of VH1's TOUGH LOVE show has joined the crew at the Humane Society/ Popcorn Park Animal Shelter. Joann and her son Steve, star of TOUGH LOVE, have decided to make Popcorn Park their "pet project". They are strengthening several of the programs that the Society has in place and have also established new agendas and efforts for many of the lost souls that are waiting for “a new leash on life”. Arrangements were made through JoAnn's contact to have a photographer take professional pictures of most of the dogs waiting for a forever home. There are many other plans and activities on JoAnn's drawing board too numerous to mention here. BIRD OWNER PLEADS GUILTY TO ANIMAL CRUELTY Ewa Matczak of Belleville pleaded guilty to 20 counts of animal cruelty for 425 birds discovered in horrid conditions. Municipal Judge Karen Smith ordered Matczak to pay the Society $20,000 in an immediate lump sum with the remaining amount of $30,000 to be paid in $500 monthly installments. She is also banned from having any pets while she is living in NJ. The hoarding, overcrowding & poor care of the birds have caused the Society to spend over $80,000 in seed, chow, fruits, vegetables, and laboratory costs & other medical expenses. There are still well over 100 birds in need of a new home that are waiting for a lifetime commitment. These birds can be seen at the Society’s Tinton Falls facility during regular hours. Matczak was defended by animal rights attorney Gina Calogero. Photo above left: Birds were confiscated by the Society from a horrendous nightmare of overcrowding, sickness, lack of ventilation, & poor sanitary conditions. Photo above:Thankfully, the Society had ample space to give the birds clean cages, ventilation, food, fruits, vegetables & seed & make them healthy & ready for new homes. At far right, one of many birds still awaiting a home or sanctuary. Anyone wishing to help clean, feed, water the 180+ birds awaiting adoption, the shelter is open 7 days a week until 5 p.m. for this effort. From left to right, John Bergmann, Emma, Duncan and Susankelly Thompson meet ... and say their good-byes as the horses head out for their new homes. Above: Emma ready to come to Popcorn Park, and at right, her hooves upon her arrival at the interim home. PHOTOS SUPPLIED Emma, a chestnut and white paint miniature horse, had been abandoned in the woods with another horse, Duncan, a Standardbred gelding, by their owner. The starving pair were in a paddock with no shelter, no food and a filthy pond for water. Occasionally hunters would pass through and give them a little corn. A woman in Frenchtown became aware of the two horses’ plight, persuaded the owner to sign them over, and brought them back to her farm. She contacted Mylestone Equine Rescue who undertook the expenses of the two horses’ vet and farrier care, but there wasn’t room on the rescue farm for two more horses. Both horses were severely underweight, and Emma’s hooves terribly overgrown. As it happened, AHS/Popcorn Park’s graphic artist, Jeanne Balsam, had Our very sweet Emma and her overnight surprise ... Sunshine. 6 HUMANE NEWS October 2010 been in touch with John Bergmann and had been keeping her eye our for a small female mini or donkey that might fit in with Mickey the Appaloosa. Mickey was alone and in need of a friend after Holly, our Sicilian Donkey had passed away of old age. When Susankelly mentioned the plight of Emma and Duncan, the wheels started turning, and through a few conversations, a placement plan was made - Mylestone would take Duncan if Popcorn Park could take Emma. Popcorn Park was perfect for Emma because it’s in the Pinelands and can’t support lush pasture; Emma had foundered and needed a controlled-portion diet to maintain an even weight. On May 12th, two trailers arrived at the Frenchtown location so both horses could leave together, neither to feel left behind. Duncan, needing over 250 pounds, left for Mylestone, and six year-old Emma, still underweight, began her journey to Popcorn Park. Despite the veterianrian having supplied medications to the couple in Frenchtown to give her, Emma required additonal treatment for external and internal parasites, and she was quarantined when she arrived. She was finally ready to be introduced to Mickey, when she surprised everyone with ... a foal! John Bergmann calls her a miracle foal - that she survived Emma’s long starvation and treatment with de-wormers and is in perfect health is nothing less. Named Sunshine after another horse rescued by Popcorn Park some time ago and because she greeted her first day in bright sunlight, she is doing fine, as is mama Emma. The two will stay together at Popcorn Park and kick up their heels with joy. To make this ending even sweeter, Duncan, after his rehabilitation, found a wonderful home through Mylestone. Sunshine is the first foal ever born at Popcorn Park, and a true surprise considering Emma’s weight and all she had been through. Mama and baby are doing fine. All of his life was one of a meager existence – no love to comfort him, no shelter to keep him warm, not enough food to keep him sustained – and a 20 foot tow chain that kept him there. His life was one of solitude which included no care and no compassion. Max, a 3 year old Great Dane, was confiscated by Society staffers … and yet he was afraid and unwilling to leave the only home heʼd ever known. Through the whole tumultuous removal, he never tried to bite or be aggressive with any of his rescuers. Max and his story was featured in the February 2010 issue of the HUMANE NEWS. But the wheels of justice did turn slowly. Max didnʼt know how much better As miserable as his existence was, Max life could be … but it took 10 was afraid to leave the only home he months and 9 court appearances knew. for the Society to finally gain possession of Max. Even though his owner was being charged with animal cruelty, it was Max who served a sentence behind bars. When his owner did not show up for the final court appearance, the judge finally gave possession of Max to the Society. Matty Giuliano, a Sergeant with the Monmouth County SPCA, was at every court appearance and the judge awarded the MC SPCA $1,000. The Society has spent well over $7,000 for Maxʼs care and will have to take legal action to recoup the expenses once we determine the ownerʼs new address. And now it is time for Max to be repaid for the injustice and footdragging that has kept him in limbo for almost a year. Max is ready for a forever home – but wanting to open your heart to this dog is not enough. He is 155 pounds of powerful strength and needs to have a lifetime commitment with someone who is familiar with a dominant fella. (Tinton Falls). HARRY THE GROUNDHOG .... RESCUED AND LIVING LARGE! COVER STORIES Continued from Page 1 AFTER 10 MONTHS OF COURT DELAYS, SOCIETY GAINS POSSESSION OF MAX Max has become a well fleshed, contented dog who waited 10 months to finally be freed from his previous owner. File L-19789-F (Forked River). Due to either congenital defect or illness, she is blind in both eyes. Luckily, the helpless lass was rescued before a more dreadful accident occurred. In early February, a lone stray turkey was seen on the NJ Turnpike standing by the toll plaza near Exit 14B. Tammy the Turkey, as she was dubbed, became a tourist attraction as reporters, film crews, local television/radio stations had a daily update on her future safety. As she became more emboldened, she would hamper motorists and sit on the toll collectors’ parked cars, so plans were put into place to catch her. Society Zoo Director, John Bergmann, Turnpike officials met with the Division of Fish & Game & Turnpike officials, who used a net gun to catch “Tammy”. Bergmann then placed Tammy in a crate & she now lives in safety at Popcorn Park. PHOTO COURTESY: A P PHOTO/MEL EVANS Anubis the Serval Cat was kept as a house pet in Pennsylvania. As Anubis grew, the exotic animal started to damage the house and the owner realized that this species do not make good pets. Sadly, one need only search to find any exotic or wild animal for a price. And the legality or how good the owner might be, is not of any significance to the seller/breeder. The breed hails from Africa and sadly, Anubis has been robbed of a normal existence. Last summer, the Society’s Tinton Falls facility took in an adorable stray poodle type from Keansburg. He was wearing a collar with a tag that included an address from Atlantic Highlands. A certified letter was sent …. and then we waited hopefully for an owner to claim the little guy. The letter was returned; the telephone number was not in service and after the legal holding time for this stray, he was put up for adoption. Only one day later, in walked the perfect home! “Oreo” just celebrated his first anniversary with Janis Blackburn of Belmar. On that special occasion, Oreo was taken to the new pet store in Belmar & Janis allowed him to pick his own new toy. According to Janis: “He’s made lots of friends over the last year during our daily walks”. Just in time for Christmas, Honey got the greatest gift of all! Robin Kruger of Cherry Hill visited the Society & adopted this wonderful dog! According to Robin: “I renamed her Isis & she is an amazing ambassador for the breed. She is extremely good with all children, cats and dogs. She has a brother now who is a Rhodesian Ridgeback & also 2 sisters who are Chihuahua mixes & she loves them all. Despite what people believe about this breed, she is super sweet & knows how to play very gently. She was also very easy to train when I realized that she prefers being petted to getting treats. She seriously loves & wants to snuggle with everyone! I fall more in love with her all the time! She’s a really great hiking/running partner & has put on a lot of muscle because of it. She is a great travel buddy & has already been to the Poconos, Florida & the beach several times. She loves to swim, hike, run & play. She’s on holistic food now & is totally thriving with daily exercise & stimulation. If it wasn’t for the wonderful people who decided she was worth taking the time to save & let her heal, she wouldn’t be here & I wouldn’t have the perfect little pit”. Robin went on to state that she will be moving to Florida, near a dog-friendly beach. “I will continue to make everyone aware of how absolutely wonderful she is & hopefully, other pits like her will find great homes because she is such a positive example of the breed”. Inside were over 50 animals -- 23 rabbits, 19 cats (mostly Persians), 6 dogs, 3 cockatiels, a ferret, guinea pig & chinchilla living in unsanitary conditions. Many animals were covered in fleas & waste & some had urine burns on their body. Daniel & Karen McBurnett each were charged with 18 counts of having animals in unsanitary conditions & failing to provide vet care. They were breeding the animals for additional income. HOLMDEL Last December, 26 year old Thomas Curran abandoned his sister’s dog in the Holmdel Park woods in frigid weather after an argument with his sister about the dog’s barking at him. When his sister inquired about the dog, Curran admitted it. The temperature was below 20 degrees. Later that morning, park ranger Edward Dobrosky found the dog wandering in the woods & the dog ran into a pond. Dobrosky brought the dog to a veterinarian where he was treated for hypothermia. During the Jewish Day of Atonement after readings, a rooster or hen is held above a person’s head & swung in a circle 3 times while words are spoken. The chicken is sometimes slaughtered. Coins in a handkerchief may be used instead of chickens. According to Rabbi Gilad Kariv: “Anyone who walks through the markets can see that the manner in which the chickens are held before the Kapparot is insufferable. There is …. no concern for the feelings of these poor creatures”. The chickens are treated poorly in the days leading up to, during & after the kapparot ceremony. The birds are crammed in crates where they are kept in their own excrement, without food, water or shelter for 6 days before the “swinging of the chickens” is performed on the eve of Yom Kippur. The Society took in 6 chickens from Brooklyn, NY a few years ago after they had been left in an alley after the Kaporos ceremony. The Alliance to End Chickens (AECK) is an association of groups & individuals seeking to replace the use of chickens in these ceremonies. They will be holding a Rally on Sept. 12 in Brooklyn. The Food & Drug Administration’s investigation as to the source of the suppliers is difficult and could take months. The egg industry has consolidated into fewer but larger egg businesses and is in control of much of the nation’s egg supplies. DeCoster owns several egg farms under different names and has had several penalties for environmental violations, employee violations, etc. A video shown of one of the farms in Maine shows the abysmal conditions. Another program showed footage of cages of hens stacked high on top of each other; the flies & rodents breeding in manure pits beneath the cages. According to Dr. Michael Gregor of the HSUS, he spoke of the contaminated airborne fecal dust in extreme confinement of hens in cages which leads to increased salmonella contamination, & that caging hens is not only cruel, but it is a public health menace for consumers. The following are included in the recall of eggs: Albertsons, Farm Fresh, James Farms, Glenview, Mountain Dairy, Ralphs, Boomsma, Lund, Kemps & Pacific Coast, Lucerne, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Shoreland, Dutch Farms. For more information, visit www.eggsafety.org The August 23rd edition of TIME Magazine covered “Meatless Mondays” in which it stated that the average American consumes 21,000 animals over a lifetime. The reporter alluded to the idea that top chefs are reducing the amount of meat not only has environmental & health benefits, but meat can be boring to cook … and boring to eat. What was not included in the article was that animal cruelty was not featured. Celebrity chef Mario Batali has introduced special “Meatless Mondays” options at all of his 15 restaurants. He is also getting ready to open a small vegetarian restaurant in New York City. Steve Wynn, famous Casino mogul, and Wynn Resorts, has gone vegan & is first on the Las Vegas strip with an extensive vegan menu. The menu at his various restaurants includes risotto with seasonal vegetables, a napoleon of tofu with ratatouille & fried eggplant, whole wheat pasta primavera, blueberry cobbler with toasted almond ice cream. IMPRESSIVE REPORT FROM UNITED NATIONS E.COLI DANGER IN PLASTIC SHOPPING BAGS The State of California is studying a bill to ban grocery, liquor & drugstores from providing plastic shopping bags for free. Researchers at the University of Arizona & Loma Linda University randomly tested reusable plastic grocery bags carried by shoppers in L.A., San Francisco & Tucson. According to the NATIONAL REVIEW, they found “a serious threat to public health, especially from coliform bacteria including E.coli which was detected in half of the bags sampled. On June 2nd, 2010, the United Nations Environment Program released a new report with the following urgent message: A global shift towards a plant-based diet is necessary in order to save the world from hunger, fuel shortages, poverty & the worst effects of climate change. The report states: “Impacts from agriculture are expected to increase substantially due to population growth increasing consumption of animal products. …Agriculture, particularly meat & dairy products, accounts for 70% of global freshwater consumption, 38% of the total land use & 19% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions”. Animal rights activists are outraged by Francis Chow, a Solomon Islands businessman who has virtually imprisoned eight “totally stressed” dolphins in a tiny pool for months while he tries to sell them to marine parks in Australia & the U.S. According to Earth Island Institute’s Pacific Regional Director, they’ve been sitting in a tiny shallow pool for 6 months. The Solomon government once banned the trade but in the pursuit of revenue, they have ignored the CITES directives. ISRAEL POISED TO BE FIRST COUNTRY TO BAN FUR TRADE Israel is to be become the first country in the world to impose a blanket ban on the import of animal fur. On Sept. 2nd, the Knesset is due to debate the second & third readings of this groundbreaking bill . It would outlaw the production, processing, import, export & sale of fur from all animal species not already part of the meat industry. There is some opposition from ultra orothodox Jews whose traditional festive headgear is made partly from fox fur. A clause in proposed legislation would allow for import of fox fur for religious purposes. Fur factory farming has already been banned in Austria, Croatia & the United Kingdom. Denmark & the Netherlands has legislation in place to phase out fur farms for certain animals. The European Union & the U. He could easily get scared and try to run away or even be hurt by another child. * At home, when trick-or-treaters come calling, it’s best to put your cats and/or dogs in a safe room with their own special bones or toys and fresh water, so they don’t have a chance to run out the door. If your Halloween party is at your house, do the same - they’ll be safer. * If you have cats or dogs that normally spend any time outside each day on their own, make sure they are kept indoors on both mischief night AND Halloween for their own safety. * Do not share any of your candy with your pet - chocolate, sugar and sugarless candy are all dangerous to pets. Be sure to store your Halloween stash somewhere where your dog or cat cannot get to it. * If you feel you want to dress up your dog for Halloween, be sure an adult has chosen the costume and checked for any parts that he might eat or swallow, and that your dog feels comfortable in the costume. Don’t ever put any kind of mask over your pet’s head. Also, do not dress up cats - they become too easily frightened and can hurt themselves. Have a Happy Halloween ... and make sure your pet is safe!! junior junior bookshelf Pete & Pickles HUMANE OAKHURST BIRTHDAY LASS MEETS HER FAVORITE ZOO RESIDENT -- OZZIE Story & Illustration by Berkeley Breathed Pete & Pickles is the tale of a very proper pig, Pete, and a very freespirited elephant, Pickles. The story is about friendship, forgiveness, healing, joy, and accepting the differences in others. Pete, mourning the death of his pig wife, Paprika, finds himself, in the middle of a stormy night, with an escaped circus elephant hiding in his home. Pickles has made a muddy mess from the rainstorm. Pete cannot accept his overly tidy life being sullied. When the nasty circus clown comes to collect the terrified elephant, who had begged Pete for help, he just points in disdain. As Pete disinfects his home, he finds Pickles has left him a gift, and he gets to thinking. He reroutes his daily stroll into town to find Pickles, where he finds her chained in the circus tent. A rescue ensues, and a friendship grows between the very unlikely pair, climaxing, near story’s end, when one saves the life of the other. But where Berkeley Breathed’s genius lies - beyond the story and exquisite illustrations - is that he is tuned in to the horrific abuse suffered by elephants in the circus, and reveals it both subtly and on a level that children can relate to without being overwhelmed. No child cannot feel empathy for Pickles to see so lovable an animal be both shackled and frightened in a picture book way. Adults unaware of the plight of circus elephants may never notice these touches, but for those of us who are, we can be grateful that someone has spoken for them in a children’s picture book. The Society has been the recipient of very generous donations from various celebrations. Whether it be a wedding, engagement, bar mitzvah, anniversary, birthday, graduation or other celebration, you too can help animals. More and more bridal couples are opting out of giving small thank-you favors to their guests and are instead making donations to their “pet” charity –the Associated Humane Societies/Popcorn Park. To make the occasion special, AHS helps the bride & groom say “thank you” to their guests while donating to our special cause. Couples who make a gift to AHS/Popcorn Park will receive attractive place cards and guests can use the cards for a free admission to Popcorn Park. The Society also sends packets of Forget-Me-Not seeds that can be used as table favors which has a meaningful message on the back of the seed packets. Odie is their dog that they rescued from a shelter. When Brianne Cuff and Peter Mihalenko were making plans for their nuptials, Pete wanted to do “something with heart” versus “something no one will ever use again”. They had recently moved to Forked River and had rescued Odie, a dog from a shelter. They had also been in attendance at the Jennifer & Joseph Vasconcelos wedding & saw the attractive place settings for the benefit of Popcorn Park animals. CRL was fined $10,000 after PETA notified the U. S. Dept. of Agriculture that 32 monkeys were cooked to death when a room at the company’s facilities in Reno, Nevada, overheated. Winchester passed away on February 3 of this year. He gave us unconditional love for 11 years & taught us that no matter what craziness is in the world today, that he would always love you no matter what. When he was sick, I wanted him for just 5 more minutes but I knew he was suffering. He had splenic cancer that had spread & his bones & joints were giving up in his old age. He was in pain & dying, his tail was still wagging as I spoke lovingly to him & told him what a good boy he was & that mommy & daddy always love him. I wanted him to go peacefully to heaven but Winchester kept holding on just for me. I told him to go as it was ok. His last few days were painful as each day he grew weaker. I had to make the hardest decision in my life to euthanize him & I still live with this horrible feeling of guilt & sadness. Not a day goes by that my heart does not ache for my little boy. I have been donating to Popcorn Park for many, many years since I grew up in Roselle, NJ. I know Winchester would want this money to help the needy animals. The House of Representatives has passed H.R. 2480 which would close a loophole in the current law that allows small amounts of dog and cat fur to be used in clothes without any labeling. Currently, manufacturers are permitted to sell fur trim on garments without providing accurate (or any) labeling if the fur is valued at less than $150. Investigations have shown that some items labeled as “faux fur” can actually contain fur The bill clearly includes raccoon dogs, frequently used for fur trim, in the prohibition against the use of dog fur. The House passed the bill after it sat for more than a year in committee. The bill would also give individual states the authority to enact more restrictive laws. The bill now goes to the U. S. Senate. The PUPS bill was introduced in Congress because an audit uncovered severely inadequate enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act. Federal law allows Internet-based breeders to raise and sell thousands of puppies a year without any federal oversight. The Puppy Uniform Protection Statute (PUPS) would close that loophole and strengthen the law and put these businesses under federal oversight. The law would make sure all large-scale breeders give puppies and dogs daily exercise. Puppy mill dogs lead miserably sad existences and this would help to improve their lives. U.S. Sens. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii) & John Ensign (R-Nevada) have introduced a bill that would formally establish a chief veterinary officer in the Dept. of Homeland Security. The bill seeks to strengthen DHS’ food defense & agricultural security capacity & the ability to respond to crises related to veterinary health by ensuring that there is a veterinary leader within the department fully prepared & empowered to respond. BUFFALO When police stopped 51 year old Gary Korkuc of Cheektowaga for a traffic violation, they heard a cat meowing in the trunk. They found the 4 year old cat Navarro in a cage with his fur covered in oil, crushed red peppers & chili peppers. Korkuc said the cat was ill tempered & he was “marinating” the cat. He stated to Officers John Poisson & Jerry Guilian that he was going to cook “Navarro” & make a meal of the cat because Navarro was mean, greedy & wasteful. The cat was taken to the SPCA in Tonawanda ... the same place Korkuc had adopted him from. They have cleaned the cat & put him up for adoption. Korkuc was charged with animal cruelty, failing to signal & passing a stop sign. He was then released. It took us several weeks/months to find forever homes for most of the dogs. Patton, a Lhasa Apso, was somewhat disagreeable but the staff took the time to make him feel welcomed. Somewhere in his past, he was afraid of the leash and this has been a point of contention. Once on a leash, he is sweet and eager to please. Patton has a dominant personality and gets along well with all dogs.We have had him dressed up for various holidays for press releases in the hope that it will entice Lhasa lovers to come and adopt. So far, Patton is our “ball and chain” and a prisoner of love. Since he has been at the Society for over a year, we have included him on the ShareA-Pet Program, and Patton will be moving to the Animal Haven Farm within the not-too-distant future.
