Better Environmentally Sound Transportation
BEST, a non-profit charity, is a membership-based, integrated voice for all aspects
of sustainable transportation including
public transit, cycling and walking.
www.best.bc.ca
We work tirelessly to make “active transportation” options (including cycling and
walking) available to the people of the
Lower Mainland. Here are a few compelling
reasons for you to support our work:
GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS Cycling or walking instead of driving
is a great way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, clean up the air,
and improve the environment for our children and grandchildren.
HEALTH Health Canada claims the annual medical cost attributed to
physical inactivity is over $2 billion; cycling and walking improves
fitness and reduces overall illness and health care costs.
SAFE INFRASTRUCTURE BEST works with all levels of government
to improve active transportation infrastructure such as bike lanes,
✁ cut out and mail
greenways and sidewalks. We believe that everyone should have
access to safe and convenient bicycle routes.
EDUCATION AND PROMOTION BEST works with individuals, businesses, policy makers and the media to raise awareness and educate
the public about sustainable transportation issues and solutions.
MAKE A DIFFERENCE Your donation will help fund our important
work to improve transportation for all of us – please join us, and get
active on transportation!

Greenway Project moves forward!
The Central Valley Greenway project is receiving nearly $4 million
from Transport Canada’s Urban Transportation Showcase Program.
Together with matching funds from TransLink ($4M), City of
Vancouver ($2M), City of Burnaby ($2M), and further cost sharing
from the City of New Westminster, GVRD, VanCity and BEST, more
than $12 million will be spent on planning, construction, and stewardship of the Greenway over the next three years.
In 2001, BEST won the $1 million VanCity Award for its vision of
the 22km Central Valley Greenway as a ribbon of green through
the Lower Mainland. Since that time, BEST has been working
closely with regional and local governments, as well as other
stakeholders and NGO’s in the community to ensure the Greenway
becomes a reality.
Currently about 40%(9km) of the Greenway is usable as a separated
pathway for walking and biking, although not all is to a final standard.
With the new funding, existing sections of the Greenway will be connected and upgraded, and key barriers on the route will be removed
to provide for a continuous link from Science World in Vancouver,
through the Central Valley of Burnaby, to the New Westminster Quay
on the Fraser River. Completion is scheduled for 2007.
