Welcome to Piscataquis County
Incomparable landscapes, unforgettable
vacations, and a great place to raise a family.
The Piscataquis Region waits for you.
Some individuals love the wide-open spaces
of the great outdoors; they prefer nature over
crowds, and hiking in search of waterfalls over
driving in traffic. Others, however, enjoy shopping for unique Maine-made products, or trying
a new restaurant before seeing a live theatrical
performance. No matter what the preference,
it can be found here, in Piscataquis County.
Most nature lovers would appreciate that we
are one of only two counties in Maine classified
as 100% rural. Within our borders, residents
and visitors find a myriad of opportunities
to enjoy the landscapes and activities the
Piscataquis Region provides. Summer and
winter each impart their own adventures. We
have beautiful rivers and ponds, and majestic
lakes that beckon fishermen, kayakers and
swimmers throughout the summer, then freeze
over for avid ice-fishers, snowmobilers and
skaters in the winter. With most of our county
deeply forested, habitat for animals of all sizes
is plentiful. Hunters are likely to spot Moose,
deer, grouse, wild turkey, and smaller game,
and possibly Maine black bear! Our ATV
trails are buzzing with activity for most of the
year, and snowmobile trails seem to get more
traffic in the wintertime than most of our snow
covered roads! Cross country skiing is popular
in the winter, and in warmer months, hiking,
camping and biking are also favorites. Up to
one hundred waterfalls have been discovered
by hikers in the Southern Piscataquis region
alone! For those who want to enjoy the quiet,
peaceful beauty our county boasts, a summer
cottage along Sebec Lake may be just what the
doctor ordered.
County-wide community-events keep us
all connected and provide opportunities to
celebrate all that makes us special, including
the Whoopie Pie Festival and the Piscataquis
Heritage Balloon Festival drawing crowds from
all over New England and Canada.
Piscataquis County is home to wonderful
businesses, all eager to serve you! A local food
movement continues, with great restaurants
all throughout the county, from casual cuisine
to fine dining, sweet breakfast places and
wonderful bakeries, there is something for
every palette! Our county is very active in the
arts. Residing here are deeply talented musicians, artists and actors, often showcased at
Dover Foxcroft’s Center Theatre. For families
looking to relocate, affordable real estate and
high-ranking schools are two more reasons to
consider Piscataquis County. Whether you visit
for a day or stay for a season, we guarantee
you’ll never want to leave.

(State Historic Site)
Moosehead Lake
Low’s Covered Bridge
Located in Greenville, Moosehead is Maine’s
largest and most majestic lake, and is the largest mountain-lake in the eastern United States.
The best way to see the lake in its entirety and
to enjoy its natural beauty is to take a cruise on
the historic Katahdin Steamboat. Mount Kineo,
with 700-foot cliffs rising straight up from
Moosehead Lake, has attracted visitors for
centuries. The Moosehead region includes the
headwaters of the Kennebec, the West Branch
of the Penobscot, the Piscataquis, the Pleasant,
and the Saint John rivers, and is home to Lily
Bay State Park. The region has a large moose
population; moose outnumber people three
to one! While visiting the lake, visitors enjoy
the town of Greenville, with many boutiques,
Historic covered bridge built in 1830 that
received its name from early settler, Robert
Low. Low’s Rebuilt in 1843, 1857, and 1987;
twice destroyed by spring flooding. One of
only nine covered bridges left in Maine, it
is listed on the National Register of Historic
Places Located on Rt. 15 in Guilford, Maine.
State-maintained historic site with a restored
blast furnace and a beehive-shaped charcoal
kiln originally built in 1843. Nearly 2,000 tons
of iron was produced here each year in the late
nineteenth century, and the community even
boasted a resort hotel. Open from May to October, the seventeen-acre park has picnic facilities.
