Another exciting fundraising
development is set to take off
soon! The Chamber will be
raffling an Old Town Canoe
Company kayak with a gift card
toward the purchase of a paddle. Tickets are on sale now.
The winner will be drawn at this
year’s Maine Whoopie Pie Festival being held in June. Make sure
to purchase your raffle tickets
from a Board member or at the
Chamber! Keep your eyes open
for kayak viewing locations!
Currently, the kayak is on display
at the Chamber of Commerce
office in Dover.
The Chamber would like to extend a hearty THANK YOU to
the sponsors of the Saturday
Night in Dover-Foxcroft (SNDF)
concert series. Due to the decline in attendance at the individual events, the Chamber and
Center Theatre have made the
decision not to present SNDF
offerings in 2012. In lieu of
SNDF, the Chamber is planning
to hold some themed events –
plans for a mystery theater night
or other theme party are being
explored! Stay tuned for updates regarding such events.

Hometown Holidays 2011
On behalf of the Piscataquis Chamber of Commerce, and the Piscataquis Holiday Planning Committee,
we would like to thank everyone
who attended all of the activities
during our “Hometown Holiday
Celebration”. Our goal was to help
bring the spirit of the holidays to
Piscataquis County by offering a
variety of free activities for children
and adults in our community.
There was a warm sentiment
amongst the hometown communities that left everyone that attended
with memories that our children will
remember and will be telling their
to fill the Executive Director’s position. Individual Board members have
taken on extra duties such as attending meetings and helping with daily
operations that are traditionally the
responsibility of the Executive Director. I cannot express how much pride
I have in our current slate of Directors. We work as a team - a handson team working for the betterment of our community.
We have a new volunteer, Kathy
Starbird of Sangerville. Kathy augments the current volunteer crew
staff of Gail Stutzman and Rose Durgin. With three volunteers, the
Chamber office is now open from
10am to 2pm on Tuesday, Thursday
and Friday.
We wish our past Executive Director,
Deb Boyd, all the best in her new
Executive Director position at the
Piscataquis YMCA. We heartily thank
her for her service and all the time
she has given to the Chamber and the
community. Furthermore, we welcome her to the Board of Directors
for the PISCATAQUIS CHAMBER
OF COMMERCE.

The first Annual Angel Ball was held as a
fundraiser for local foster children on
Dec. 3rd. The event was held at DoverFoxcroft’s old bank building on the third
floor in a beautifully decorated ballroom.
Attendees picked a gift from a list provided by local foster children—the gift
was their entrance fee for the ball. Dress
was semi-formal and all enjoyed hors
d’oeuvres, cocktails, desserts , and music!
A committee led by chair, Jodi Arno, and
co-chaired by Katti Webb rallied a team
of volunteers to make this night a huge
success! Melody Porter, Jessica Bentz,
Carol Marden and Elisa Thompson arranged for food and decorations which
were donated.
Milo/Brownville—Many new activities were added including Craft
Activities for children, visits with
Santa, hayrides and a bonfire!
Guilford—Activities relocated to
Friends of Community Fitness to
accommodate more people. Added to previous year’s activities:
Crafts for children, story time with
special characters and holiday
movie viewing.
Hundreds of dollars were raised and
over 150 gifts were donated to “The Angels”. Plans are already in motion for
next year’s Angel event! Endless Thanks
to all involved in making this a memorable night and making local children’s
holidays a little brighter!

The owner of the building, John Spack,
graciously donated the use of the ballroom and facilities. The ballroom, which
had been out of use for many years,
came alive with the nearly 75 attendees
who danced the night away to DJ Timothy McGee’s music. Mr. McGee donated
his services on behalf of The Center Theatre.

The Piscataquis Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with Foxcroft Academy hosted their very
first Business Resource Fair on
November 8th. The purpose of
this fair was for local businesses to
learn about resources that are
available to them from various
organizations in this area. This
was a free event that was created
as a community service to connect
business owners and managers
with the tools that they might
need to more efficiently operate
their businesses. Information that
was provided to business owners
at the fair included business planning resources, workforce and
payroll, IRS/taxes, legal resources,
financial/ budgeting, and advertising/ marketing.
In addition to the 30 resource tables that were available in the
gymnasium, Foxcroft Academy
international students filled the
lobby as they provided free food
samples from around the world.
These treats were definitely enjoyed by all attendees, as they
tasted samples from China, Germany, and Ghana just to name a
few!
Deb Boyd, Executive Director for
the Piscataquis Chamber of Commerce states “For our first year, we
consider this event a success!
There were several business owners who left the fair with armloads
of information, and appointments
to follow up with a few agencies
that will help them. I’m so glad
that we were able to help connect
these business owners with the
resources they needed.”
Arnold Shorey, Head of School at
Foxcroft Academy agrees with Boyd.
“We were honored to be a part of
hosting this event. This was not only
good for business owners, but it also
provided an opportunity for the
community members to interact
with our students and experience
the different cultures that are a part
of us at Foxcroft Academy. The kids
signature dishes, and share them
with everyone at the fair, and the
community was very accepting and
supportive of our students."
At the conclusion of the evening,
there were several drawings for
door prizes, with the following individual names being drawn:

Plans for next year include the possible addition of an informative
panel that would offer a Q&A session on a designated topic. Boyd
and Shorey both expressed that
they are looking forward to next
year, and continuing this event as a
service to the business community.
"FAME is pleased to recognize Camden National Bank for its 2011 Financial Institution of the Year Award. We
chose Camden National in part due to
its continuing usage of FAME products and in part due to its commitment to the community,” said Beth
Bordowitz, FAME’s chief executive
officer. “Over the past year, the bank
has partnered with FAME on 56 loans
totaling over $16 million. This in turn
helped to create 87 Maine jobs and
retain an additional 561 jobs. Addi-
tive contributor to FAME’s Lender
Advisory Council. This has provided
several excellent suggestions to help
FAME help its lending partners
better serve their customers."
Loans made in conjunction with
FAME are one aspect of Camden
National Bank’s commitment to
Maine businesses, led by Executive
Vice President Timothy P. Nightingale, commercial lenders and the
loan processing team, all based in
Maine. This effort aligns with the
organizational view of supporting
local businesses and communities
through local decision making.

Business in Focus: Friends of Community Fitness (FOCF)
31 High Street, Guilford, ME 04443 * (207) 876-4813 * Gayle Worden, Executive Director
Friends of Community Fitness (FOCF) had it’s origins in Vitality, a
privately owned fitness center located in the former Parallel Transportation Building on School Street in Guilford. Vitality resurrected
itself as Friends of Community Fitness. FOCF was established in
2003 as a non-profit 501C3 located at the former Abbie Fowler
Building in Sangerville, ME. In 2010, FOCF had the opportunity to
migrate back to Guilford and is now housed in the former Guilford
Primary School. The migration involved an estimated 3,000 hours
of volunteer time to create the new home. FOCF offers 24/7 access (over 18) with a computerized magnetic card security lock
which tracks members use of the facility. The success of FOCF is
possible due to a combination of collaborations between business,
non-profits and caring individuals who have volunteered their time
and money for a project they feel is beneficial to the health and well
-being of our community.
FOCF offers a wide array of services.

A hometown grocery store located in the center of
Milo, Maine, Tradewinds proudly offers groceries at
prices that are seen in the Bangor market.
We have 24-hour gas pumps that accept cash, debit
and credit –convenient for the late or early travelers. All cash transactions done at the pump receive a

Tradewinds is currently in the process of remodeling
to expand our grocery selections for our customers.
This remodel will include a state of the art beer cave,
as well as increased perishable selections. Look for
the completion of this project sometime in the spring.
In addition to our remodeling, we are proudly announcing that Dunkin Donuts will be joining us in the
Spring! Dunkin's will have convenient early morning
hours as well as excellent coffee and pastries to satisfy your morning appetites.
Tradewinds is proud to be in Milo and looks to continually improve its offerings for our customers. Please
