E komo Mai!
Welcome!
We hope our “nohea kamali’i” will feel the “mahalo” within
themselves throughout their summer adventure! Our Montessori
environments offer our “haumana” true “pilialoha” and “aloha
spirit”. Our kamali’i will feel the special warmth of the Hawaiian
way of life and thinking. Through storytelling, science, songs,
dance, games, and lots of great activities ~ we will “a’o mai” about
the flowers and plant life, fish, the native animals, beautiful birds,
exotic animals, endangered animals, traditions and customs, food,
clothing, literature, learn some numbers and phrases….
so much to do!
Each week has a theme, but lots of Hawaiian experiences and books
will be a part of our day! We can’t wait for summer! You may need
a Hawaiian dictionary to speak with your nani, u’i, maika ‘i
kamali’i after our summer adventure!
ALOHA KAKOU!!
Friday Fun Days
Every Friday is “Water Day” in the “Indoor” Outdoor
Environment. Water experiments and activities will help us
cool off in the Arizona heat.
Super Cool
to tickle our tastebuds
Await our “happy slurpiness” ~ like fudgesicles, firecracker pops,
Juicy Juice popsicles, Otter Pops, ice cream sandwiches,
volcano ice cream, banana boats, and snowcones!
Our Indoor-Outdoor Environment
The “Indoor” – Outdoor Environment is offered daily on a
rotating basis ~ full of fun and relaxing summertime activities
like painting, play dough, dramatic play, dress-up. On Tuesday and
Thursday it will turn into a P.E. room with hula hoops, parachutes,
bean bag toss, ball games, and Hawaiian contests like “kukini” and
other children’s games such as “’ulu maika” and “no’a”!
Hawaii,
Aloha au ia oe!
* Week 1 *
J u n e 6 – J un e 1 0
The “kapuna” at Adobe Montessori Kula welcome
their new and continuing friends with a traditional
Hawaiian greeting of leis and present them with
their Hawaiian name! We’ll search the world over
to locate the Hawaiian Islands, just like Captain Cook ~ who
discovered the “Sandwich Islands,” as the Hawaiian isles were once
called! Let’s explore the islands, archipelagos and the mysteries of a
bubbling volcano! We’ll study the amazing hidden treasures the
Hawaiian Islands hold for us. We’ll learn the parts of a volcano,
build our own archipelagos, and have some “volcanic fun” with
science experiments. We’ll have to take cover as our own Kahoolawe
volcano erupts!
IT’S SURE TO BE A BLAAAAST!
Story of the week: “Baby Honu’s Incredible Journey” by Tammy Yee
Friday Movie: Lilo & Stitch
Moana
* Week 2 *
Ju n e 1 3 – J un e 1 7
Let’s catch the waves and sail out
to sea! The moana
(ocean) is an underwater adventure
all its own. Sharks,
whales, seahorses, starfish, jellyfish,
otters, sea turtles, crabs…
ocean life galore! There is so much to discover in this vast kingdom!
We’ll be singing seashore tongue twisters, painting sand dollar
necklaces, and making sea shell picture frames. Shell
matching, great ocean stories, listening to music of the sea,
and balancing on a “surf” board!! (Arizona style ~ dudes!)
Don’t forget your sunscreen! Sun safety and water safety is SO
important ~ whether in a Hawaiian paradise or in our steaming
Arizona desert. A “special guest” will be coming to talk with us
about keeping ourselves protected from the sun and how to be super
safe around water.
Surf’s Up!! What a groovin’ Week!
Story of the Week: “Ka Hoku Kai” (The Starfish - a Hawaiian folktale)

Let’s Do The Huki, Huki, Huki, Huki, Huki Lau
During Hula Week!
* Week 3 *
J un e 2 0 – J un e 2 4
This week will begin by blowing the traditional large conch shell horn, or
“pu”, to signal the beginning of Luau Week. We will feel like true
Hawaiian kamali’i as we play traditional games, finger plays, and learn
Hawaiian children’s stories. We will learn to dance the Hula and how to
speak using the art of the “nohea” Hawaiian hand language. We
will act as true kama’ainas when we make our own grass skirts,
flower leis, “ipus” (drums)and dance the Huki Lau all week long!

Go mad for mangoes, pluck a papaya, go bananas, pick a juicy
sweet pineapple, get a guava, find the star in the carambola, and
eat a green pear that turns black??? Flavorful, yummy sweet,
nutritious, exotic, maika ‘i island fruit. From tasting games and
smell matching, to the skill of picking the best fruit to eat, we’ll
traipse all over the islands and learn where they grow. We’ll
have fun with fruit counting and make fruity headbands with
pineapple stamping. Let’s taste coconuts, mangoes, papayas,
pineapples and sugar cane and make banana boats! We’ll even
make our own fruity pizzas (yummy & healthy too!!) On Friday
we’ll shake our patooties to “Tooty Fruity~All~Rudy!”

A big Hip-Hip-Hooray as we kick off our 4th of July week ~ Hawaiian
style! We’ll celebrate both our nation’s independence and the day that
Hawaii officially became the 50th state. American flags, Hawaiian flags,
musical marching bands, and patriotic songs will be part of the fun of
America’s Birthday Week! We’ll make 4th of July windsocks with stars
and stripes plus more fun arts and crafts! We’ll make a Hawaiian
State Book and learn the state bird, flower, tree, state seal, the names
of the eight islands – plus, the official flower of each island! For the
grand finale on Friday, we will celebrate with watermelon, angel food
cake, blueberries and cool whip ~ ~ Red, White and Blue Galore!

Tropical Showers of Fun
* Week 6 *
J u ly 1 1 – J u ly 1 5
How much rain does a tropical island get in a year? Lots & lots & lots
of it!! Let’s compare objects that change textures when they get wet,
discover what objects sink and what objects float, and compare rainwater
to saltwater. What do you wear when it rains? Let’s compare… what do
Arizona children wear, and what do kama’aina kamali’i wear? Let’s listen
to the sounds of a rain stick – and then make our own rain stick! We’ll
even make it rain ~ really! And what is the most beautiful sight after a
good rain? A rainbow!! Rainbow art projects, color mixing, and
play dough fun! As we say our final goodbyes at the close of this week,
our grand finale will be a special Friday surprise with some chillin’
cool snow cones and a Hawaiian pizza party!

Why Attend Adobe Montessori’s Summer Session?
• Children in their early childhood years thrive on a consistent & routine schedule.
Adults have the mistaken idea that change is good. What is good for an adult is
not always great for the child. Change is fun . . . for an adult. A child needs
routine and repetition during their early childhood years.
• Our Summer Session RETAINS AND BUILDS upon the success and progress your child has made
during the school year, along with having a wonderful mix of summer activities! Your child may have
just made a wonderful advance in a specific skill, only to have forgotten it due to changing their routine
for too long. Ouch!!
• A child’s mind needs consistent repetition. This is why we have a longer academic school year and a six
week summer program. It allows for a short break after the regular session, then a short break before
the 2011 – 2012 session begins. We schedule 6 consistent weeks during the summer in order to aid
your child in building upon, as well as, retaining their wonderful achievements!
• If your child is new and will be joining us for the 2011 – 2012 session, it is essential that he/she begin
during the summer session.
• If your child was enrolled mid-year, again, it is essential that he/she not have a break in their routine.
• We encourage our parents to schedule their vacation to coincide with the breaks at Adobe Montessori.
This will benefit your child immeasurably!
Along with the important benefits stated above,
