welcome
to buffalo niagara
There are few things I enjoy as much as saying “Welcome to Buffalo
Niagara.” That’s because, in my role as president and chief executive
officer of the Buffalo Niagara Enterprise, I’ve had the privilege of
introducing our region’s amenities to countless people who have
relocated here and found so much more than they expected—and
you will, too.

The Buffalo Niagara region is comprised of eight counties that
form the western-most end of New York State. This guide primarily
focuses on Erie and Niagara county which are home to the two most
populated cities.
www.buffaloniagara.org
In this guide, there’s information to help you find a home you’ll love,
services you’ll need and activities you’ll enjoy. It’s a comprehensive
starting place—but only a starting place, because one of the best
things about Buffalo Niagara is that it constantly surprises residents
and visitors with all there is to do and see.
You’ll hear us talk a lot about balance, too, and soon you’ll know
why we say that Buffalo Niagara is “where life works.” With a lower
cost of living, quick commutes and a culture that values quality time
with family and friends as well as hard work, it’s easier to manage
professional aspirations and leisure time.
We’re glad you’re here to be a part
of our next great era—welcome to
Buffalo Niagara.

As you explore Western New York, you’ll find a region deeply rooted
in history yet moving boldly to a dynamic future—thanks to the
passion of our business executives, entrepreneurs, health care
teams, educators and students, arts and cultural professionals,
elected officials, and our neighbors and friends. Together, we’ve
committed to economic development and growth; greening our
neighborhoods and caring for our waterways; cultural and ethnic
diversity; and maintaining our quality of life.
Sincerely,
Tom Kucharski

Western New York has diverse communities with essential
elements in common: wonderful people and excellent value.
This guide will start you on the path to a new home, and we
encourage you to drive, bike or walk through our neighborhoods
and ask about them, too—we love introducing people to our area
and one of Buffalo’s nicknames, “the city of good neighbors,” is
true throughout the region.

“When we were deciding what works for us, my wife and
I discovered that Buffalo Niagara would offer challenging
careers and great communities without many of the
obstacles we faced elsewhere. Now we are raising our
family in a historic, city neighborhood and both work on
some of the most exciting projects in the area. We can truly
say that we appreciate the variety that life here has to offer.’’

Buffalo Nicknames:
It’s hard to describe the City of Buffalo
without also describing its neighborhoods.
Like many mid-size and large metropolitan
areas, much of the city’s charm comes
from the diversity of its neighborhoods—
some defined by their architecture, some
by their amenities, and still others by their
histories. You’ll find a broad diversity of
people here, as well as places to visit
and things to do, making Buffalo one of
the most livable and enjoyable cities of its
size.

1 • Allentown
Allentown was named after Lewis Fallie
Allen, a successful businessman whose
former home at 16 Allen Street still
stands in one of Buffalo’s most vibrant
neighborhoods. Here, colorful cottages
and Victorian homes mingle with some
of Buffalo’s most popular galleries,
restaurants, cafes and bars, giving this
neighborhood—listed on the National
Register of Historic Places—a dynamic,
round-the-clock energy.
In 1959, one of Buffalo’s best-loved
events, the Allentown Art Festival, got
its start here and today it’s also home
to the Allen West Festival, combining
live performances and music with visual
arts. First Fridays are another popular
monthly event with exhibits throughout
Allentown’s many galleries. In addition,
Allentown is home to the Theatre of Youth
(in the historic Allendale Theater) and the
Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site.
2 • Black Rock/
Riverside
Along the edge of the Black Rock Canal
and the Niagara River, Black Rock was
an independent and bustling waterfront
town before incorporation with Buffalo
in 1853. Today, this neighborhood is a
mix of families who have lived here for
generations, and newcomers who are

rediscovering its proximity to waterfront
bike paths and greenways; a growing
business district of specialty restaurants,

affordable housing.
3 • Central
Business District
The Central Business District (CBD)
represents the convergence of Buffalo’s
wonderful history with our dynamic future.
Several of Buffalo’s largest employers are
headquartered here, as well as city and
county operations. You’ll find Buffalo’s
Theater District here, too (including the
renowned Shea’s Performing Arts Center).
In addition, Buffalo’s waterfront—which
includes Lake Erie, the Buffalo and
Niagara Rivers, and the revitalized original
Erie Canal terminus—surround the CBD.
Throughout the summer, Buffalo Place
(www.buffaloplace.org) presents events
and concerts here (many of which are
free), attracting thousands of people to
the waterfront.
Nearly everywhere you’ll find beautiful
architecture, such as Buffalo’s Art Decoera City Hall and the Guaranty Building
designed by Louis Sullivan (considered
one of the first modern skyscrapers due
to its construction method). Nearby are
significant new buildings such as the U.S.
District Court for the Western District
and the headquarters for HealthNow
New York. In addition to commercial
development, many of the CBD’s historic
buildings are becoming exciting residential
and mixed-use properties including
the Avant, the Hotel @ the Lafayette
(designed by Louise Bethune, the nation’s
first female architect), and Statler City,
creating a vibrant urban area for living,
working and playing.
Late at night through early morning, the City of Buffalo has the pleasant
aroma of Cheerios®—thanks to the General Mills® plant located on the
banks of the Buffalo River just across from downtown.

4 • Cobblestone District
This strip between the CBD and the
South Buffalo area is quickly undergoing
redevelopment. The First Niagara Center,
a venue for top-name concerts and
home of the National Hockey League’s
Buffalo Sabres and our professional
lacrosse team, the Buffalo Bandits,
anchors this largely commercial area.
This district also boasts loft apartments
in renovated factories, new shops and
restaurants, exhibition spaces for visual
and performing arts and proximity to the
waterfront.
5 • Delaware District
The Delaware District centers on
Delaware Avenue, with beautiful mansions
dating back to the late-nineteenth and
early-twentieth centuries (many now
house Buffalo businesses and not-forprofit organizations).
At its core is Delaware Park, the
centerpiece of landscape architect
Frederick Law Olmsted’s Buffalo Parks
System (he also designed New York
City’s park system, including Central
Park and Prospect Park). This area also
encompasses the city’s Museum District
6
with the Burchfield Penney Art Center, the
Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and the Buffalo
& Erie County Historical Society. Other
amenities—such as Hoyt Lake in Delaware
Park, historic and beautiful Forest Lawn
Cemetery, and the Buffalo Zoo—make this
a popular area.
6 • East Side/Humboldt
Hamlin Park—within Buffalo’s East Side—
is home to Canisius College, and this
neighborhood and the surrounding East
Side include many historically significant
homes and houses of worship, another
Olmsted-designed park—known locally as
Martin Luther King, Jr. Park (MLK Park)—
and the Buffalo Museum of Science, one
of the region’s most-visited attractions.
While several East Side neighborhoods
were hard hit by suburban sprawl in the
twentieth century, many Buffalo families
have called the East Side home for
generations. Today, the City of Buffalo and
community-based groups like Grassroots
Gardens of Buffalo are working with
residents on urban farms and community
garden initiatives for a brighter and much
greener future.
7 • Elmwood Village
The Elmwood Village has undergone
tremendous revitalization in the past
20 years and today, nearly 200 thriving
shopping, arts, dining and leisure
destinations fill the storefronts, making
this neighborhood a haven for students,
seniors, singles and families alike. This
area has been highlighted as one of
America’s most livable neighborhoods by
the American Planning Association, with
its beautiful range of housing, a wonderful
three-season farmers’ market and many
pocket parks and parkways. Within or
near this neighborhood—which also
borders Delaware Park and the Museum
District—are several colleges including
Buffalo State College (State University
of New York), Medaille College, and
Canisius College.
8 • Fruit Belt/Buffalo
Niagara Medical
Campus (BNMC)
In 2001, our region’s medical and
health sciences professionals, business
executives, educators and government
officials banded together to support the
growth of the Buffalo Niagara Medical
Campus. In just eight years, $750
million has been invested to create
state-of-the-art health care, education,
entrepreneurial and research facilities.
Partners include Roswell Park Cancer
Institute, the Hauptman-Woodward
Institute, Kaleida Health, the Center
for Hospice and Palliative Care, the
University at Buffalo and more.
Bordering the BNMC is one of Buffalo’s
oldest neighborhoods, locally known
as the Fruitbelt—first for its orchards
and now for its fruit-named streets like
Cherry, Orange and Mulberry. Tucked
away in a pocket of Buffalo’s East Side
neighborhood, the Fruitbelt was largely
undervalued for decades. Now, though,
it’s undergoing revitalization due largely
to the proximity of the BNMC and its
growing workforce.
9 • Larkin District

This small neighborhood around the
redeveloped Larkin Terminal Warehouse—
now called Larkin at Exchange and home
to the headquarters of First Niagara
Financial Group and other businesses—
represents the positive impact that
business and community leaders have
when they work together on a shared
vision. While still largely commercial
in nature, long-abandoned industrial
buildings are now undergoing renovation
as mixed-use and residential properties,
and there is renewed interest in the very
affordable housing surrounding this area.

Irish-American roots are proudly reflected
in the street signs and the pubs—as well
as the Buffalo Irish Center—this area has
grown more diverse over the years.

The Waterfront Village area sits at the
convergence of Lake Erie and the Niagara
River, and it’s one of the best places to
enjoy boating (as a participant or as a
spectator to the races that take place on
Lake Erie throughout the summer). In
addition to lake views, Waterfront Village’s
western vantage point provides gorgeous
sunsets over the Niagara River and
Canada.
Buffalo’s West Side neighborhood,
including the Lower West Side and West
Village Historic District areas, is one of
the largest neighborhoods in Buffalo.
It’s also home to D’Youville College—a
private college recognized for its strong
health care programs. You’ll also find
many historically significant buildings
here, including Kleinhans Music Hall
(designed by Eliel and Eero Saarinen)
and the Richardson Olmsted Complex.
Our waterways form its western border,
flanked by the Peace Bridge that
connects Buffalo to Fort Erie, Ontario in
Canada.
This largely residential neighborhood is
home to a range of condominium styles—
many of which include marinas and boat
docks—as well as a few businesses and
restaurants. In addition, the Erie Basin
Marina—with its bikeways, walkways and
gardens—and the Naval Military Park give
added interest. In winter, this area hosts
the popular Labatt Blue Pond Hockey
Tournament—an amateur hockey event
that has doubled in size every year since it
began in 2010—on its frozen marinas.

While the Canadian side has experienced
far more commercial development in the
last several decades, more recently real
estate developers and entrepreneurs
are rediscovering the lost gems of the
American side, including grand hotels
and apartment buildings with breathtaking
views of the Falls.
Niagara Falls has several lovely
neighborhoods that take advantage of
the area’s natural beauty, including the
Deveaux area on the escarpment and
Cayuga Island—a small residential island
on the edge of the Niagara River.
Niagara County is also home to thriving
agriculture, including a growing
winemaking industry that celebrates not
only the grapes of this region (and the
specialty wines that result, such as the
popular ice wines), but also wines made
from the various fruit grown here. Visitors
can sample the wines (and much more)
along the Niagara Wine Trail, getting a

offer.

Buffalo “northtowns” is home to several
of the most historic buildings outside of
the city. The town also has an awardwinning school system and lots of green

here). It’s also home to Antique World (a
huge indoor/outdoor antiques and flea

East Aurora
14
East Aurora is a beautiful town 20 minutes
south of Buffalo. Tree-lined streets,
enchanting brick and clapboard houses
and a charming village center make it a
wonderful and historic place for today’s
families. It’s also home to Fisher-Price
Toys and the Toy Museum, Moog, and
Elbert Hubbard’s Roycroft Campus, where
artisans continue the tradition of crafting
handmade home goods and useful
objects from wood, metal and glass in the
Arts & Crafts style.
Hamburg is a “southtowns” suburb
located on Lake Erie with a diverse
set of attractions. While close to the
city, it’s also home to the Erie County
Fairgrounds—home of “America’s Fair,” the
third-largest county fair in the country—and
the Hamburg Raceway, giving it a fun and
slightly rural feel. There’s a bustling village
center, Hilbert College, and Woodlawn
Beach—one of the area’s largest public
beaches with a restaurant, snack bar,
and event pavilion. In Hamburg you’ll also
find the Penn Dixie site, where curious
diggers can find Devonian-era fossils and
other archaeological wonders in its shale
outcroppings.
Grand Island
Kenmore/Tonawanda
Situated in the Niagara River between
Buffalo and Niagara Falls, Grand Island
is one of the world’s largest freshwater
islands. Its amenities include Beaver
Island State Park—a waterfront park with
golf, bike trails and beaches—as well as
Buckhorn Island State Park, an 895-acre
nature preserve on the island’s north end.
Naturally, as it’s surrounded by water,
there are also many public and private
marinas and yacht clubs. Fantasy Island
is a popular, family-centered amusement
park and there’s a campground
nearby, too. While largely residential
and recreational, some businesses
have located on the island, including
the headquarters of the internationally
renowned Cannon Design architecture
firm.
While Kenmore is technically a village in
the Town of Tonawanda, it has its own
strong identity and sense of community
as a first-ring suburb of Buffalo, lying just
past the North Buffalo neighborhood.
There is a lovely village center, large parks
and libraries, and many other amenities
that give this area a great mix of urban
and suburban benefits. The Town of
Tonawanda, with its strong school system
and safe neighborhoods, developed
around Kenmore and its more recent
history is reflected in its post-World War II
housing (including some simple-but-lovely
mid-century gems).

North Tonawanda is a large “northtowns”
suburb on the Erie Canal (and the
Niagara River to the west), and substantial
redevelopment and renovations are
underway. Like all of Western New
York, in North Tonawanda a few main
streets with grand old homes give way to
simpler homes on shady lots. While its
industrial roots are seen in several large
factories along the town’s western edge,
residences and small businesses are
springing up in the canal area—notably the
redevelopment of the historic canal-front
Remington Rand factory into beautiful lofts
and retail and service-based businesses.
It has a thriving small-business district that

While much of Buffalo Niagara centers on
our two most populated cities, Western
New York is actually comprised of eight
counties that form the western-most end
of New York State—each with distinct
features that make this region an exciting
place to explore. Here’s a quick overview.
Allegany County
Allegany County, with its hilly terrain and
abundant farmland boasts venues for
cross-country skiing, hiking, mountainbiking and golfing. Many freshwater
lakes, rivers and streams meander here,
making it a haven for boating and fishing.
It is home to Alfred University, Alfred
State College and Houghton College’s
main campus, providing exciting cultural
venues and educational opportunities
for residents and visitors of all ages and
interests.

it one of the largest in the New York

Bonaventure University in nearby Olean.
Cattaraugus County is the heart of
Western New York’s ski country, and you’ll

Most areas within Western New York
have independent school districts and
several rank among the top in New York
State. In addition, the Buffalo Public
Schools system—the largest in the
region—includes City Honors School,
which is consistently ranked among the
top schools in the country by sources
such as Newsweek and U.S. News &
World Report.
*Business First has rated the academic performances of 97 public school districts in Western New York,
based on four years of test data from the New York State Education Department. For the purpose of this
guide, the following table only displays those districts that fall within Erie & Niagara counties. This is why
the numbers are not consecutive, skipping those districts that fall outside this two-country region.

Sure, you know you’ll find great Buffalo
chicken wings here, and you may even
have heard of our other famous foods—
beef on ‘weck’ (thinly sliced roast beef,
topped with a spoonful of horseradish,
and piled onto salty kimmelweck rolls with
caraway seeds and kosher salt) and charbroiled hots (all-pork hot dogs grilled over
real charcoal). While these are our ideas
of amazing fast food, what you’ll also find
is outstanding fine dining, a wide variety
of ethnic restaurants from Ethiopian to
Korean to German, and a growing number
of vegetarian and vegan eateries. We love
our Italian food and pizzas, too, and you’ll

As with everything about Buffalo Niagara,
the best way to find your new favorites
is to get out and try them—most of our
restaurants are quite affordable. There
are far too many restaurants to list here,
and new ones open nearly every day. To
help you get started, here are some great
websites with local restaurant listings and

• arts & culture
We cherish the diversity, beauty and
excitement the arts bring to our region.
With world-renowned art museums—
including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery
and the Burchfield Penney Art Center in
Buffalo, as well as the Castellani Museum
in Niagara Falls—and more than 100 visual
and performing arts centers and galleries
in Western New York, it’s no wonder that
Buffalo Niagara’s been rediscovered
as an arts and cultural destination. In
addition, Buffalo’s one of the only cities
its size to have a full orchestra (the Buffalo
Philharmonic Orchestra) as well as
science, naval and historical museums.
Think art’s not your thing? Give the parties
and special events, lectures and other
opportunities at these venues a try—you’ll
meet interesting people in amazing
places. Here are some great places to
start.

professional teams, as well as amateur
and collegiate sports. From the Buffalo

Buffalo Sabres (National Hockey League)
to the Buffalo Bandits (National Lacrosse)

competitors with football, basketball,
hockey and more keeping us on the

Opportunities for shopping are as
varied as our neighborhoods.
Our towns’ central districts—including
Elmwood Village, Hertel Avenue and
Allentown in the City of Buffalo—are
terrific areas for finding unique local
shops, antiques, bookstores and
more, as well as businesses to meet
your basic needs such as banks,
grocery and hardware stores, and
post offices.
There are also many malls in Western
New York, attracting both local and
distant customers (particularly our
Canadian neighbors). The Walden
Galleria in Cheektowaga is the
largest mall, with more than 200
department stores, specialty shops
and restaurants. The Boulevard Mall,
McKinley Mall, and Eastern Hills Mall
have many of your anchor stores and
are conveniently located within the
suburbs. The Fashion Outlets Niagara
mall in Niagara Falls is a great place
to find bargain-priced goods including
designer clothes, unique gifts, shoes,
bags, and home goods.

All this green and blue space is
wonderful for hard-core athletes and

And as we look to our future in Buffalo
Niagara, we talk about our “blue” spaces
as well as our green spaces. That’s
because we’re surrounded to the west
and north by three major waterways—
Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and the Niagara

by many more including the Erie Canal,
the Genesee River, Chautauqua Lake,
and dozens of smaller inland lakes, creeks

In 1868, Frederick Law Olmsted—then and
now considered America’s preeminent
landscape designer—and his partner,
Calvert Vaux, created a system of parks

are deeply loved and are undergoing
major restoration in our neighborhoods.

Buffalo and Erie County Public Library System

You’ll find libraries in nearly every town
center in Western New York. The largest
system, the Buffalo & Erie County Public
Library system (BECPL), includes the
Central Branch in downtown Buffalo and
more than 35 branch libraries throughout
Erie County. You’ll find much more than
books, magazines and electronic media
at our libraries, too—they’re community
centers for education, entertainment,
public forums and more. There’s no
cost to get a library card (identification is
required to obtain one, though, so bring
valid ID with you) and one card is good at
all libraries in the BECPL system.

Other Western New York counties also

they may share resources, as with the
Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System).

• visiting canada
For more than a century, Western New
Yorkers and Canadians have enjoyed a
collegial relationship that’s celebrated
every year at the Friendship Festival and
Binational Doors Open events. Many
Western New Yorkers spend summer
vacation along the beaches in Canada,
while thousands of Canadians ski at
our resorts. And with Toronto, Ontario—
Canada’s largest city—just a 90-mile drive
from Buffalo Niagara, as well as an easy
drive to Montreal, Ottawa and Algonquin
Park, it’s great to know the ins-and-outs of
traveling.

75% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the U.S. border—meaning Canada’s
charming waterfront villages and wine trails (like those in Niagara-on-the-Lake),
diverse and dynamic cities like Toronto and Montreal, and outstanding live theater
(like the Shaw Festival Theatre and the Stratford Festival) are just a short drive away!

driver’s licenses or birth certificates are
not considered proper identification for
adults at international crossings. Also,
every person in your vehicle must have
appropriate identification. This is also the
case if you’re traveling by bus, airplane or
train to/from Canada.
Other important considerations include
purchasing items to bring home (including
shopping at the Duty Free shops at the
international crossings), as some items

There are many destinations in Canada
that make for a great day, weekend or
week away:
Niagara-on-the-Lake is a beautiful
town on Lake Ontario at the mouth
of the Niagara River and is filled with
boutiques, restaurants, live theater,
beautiful inns, gorgeous landscaping
and much more.
The Niagara (Ontario) Wine Trail
is where North American ice wines
originated—though they’re only one
kind of many specialty wines available
here. The escarpment region is known
for producing earthy grapes with robust
mineral flavors.
Toronto, Canada’s largest city, is
beautiful, exciting, and fun. And at only
about 90 minutes from Buffalo Niagara,
it makes for a great day or weekend trip
anytime.
Stratford, Ontario is home of the
Stratford Festival, this is one of the
most notable venues in North America
for live theater performances. It’s about
a three hour drive west from Buffalo.
Make a weekend of it and take in all
there is to enjoy.
Algonquin Provincial Park is
Canada’s first and one of its largest
provincial parks and it’s a nature-lover’s
paradise with outstanding hiking,
canoeing and camping.
Montreal, Quebec is Canada’s largest
bilingual city, with French and English
spoken. It’s distinctly European in
feeling with outstanding shops, cafes,
and restaurants, and it’s a wonderful
place to visit any time of year.

When going to Canada, the most
important thing to keep in mind is that
you are traveling across an international
boundary and you’ll need proof of
citizenship to enter Canada and reenter
the United States. Acceptable forms
of identification include U.S.-issued
passports, an enhanced driver’s license
or enhanced non-driver identification
card, or a Nexus card (issued by the
Canadian government for U.S. and
Canadian citizens). Please note that basic
Identification requirements
at international border
crossings became
more stringent with the
implementation of the
Western Hemisphere Travel
Initiative in 2009. Lack of
proper identification can
cause travel delays or denial
of crossing or re-entry.
Downtown Toronto, Ontario
may require you to pay duty or may be
banned at international crossings (such
as some food and plant materials). When
asked by the customs officials, it is
important to declare any purchases made
while visiting.
If bringing pets, please note that they
must be properly licensed including proof
of vaccinations.
U.S. currency is accepted at most places
in Canada, but don’t take for granted that
it will be accepted where you’re going—if
possible, check before leaving the U.S.
(especially if traveling well away from the
border or major Canadian cities). Several
of the border crossings have currency
exchange booths available.

getting around
Until you live here, you may not realize how close Buffalo Niagara
is to several major metropolitan areas. In about two hours or less
you can drive to Rochester or Syracuse, NY; Toronto, Ontario and
several other destinations in Canada (see “Visiting Canada” on
page 44 for more information). You can fly to New York, Chicago,
Boston, Detroit or Philadelphia. Want to get away for a night?
Pittsburgh, Cleveland, the Berkshire Mountains, the Thousand
Islands region, and Vermont, are all within about a four-hour (or
less) drive, as are Ontario’s Algonquin Park and the Muskoka
region (for gorgeous camping), and Montreal, Quebec (for a taste
of Europe just half a day away).

• growing industries
Buffalo Niagara’s professional, financial
and health care services, as well as
research and education sectors, have
become significant job-generating
industries in our region. In addition,
small businesses consistently drive our
economy, and from 2002 to 2007, more
than 13,965 new companies opened.
Advanced Business
Services
Cleantech
Buffalo Niagara’s economy is seeking
to capitalize on the global demand for
innovation in renewable energy and
sustainability. Drawing on our industrial
capacity, natural assets and manufacturing
heritage, regional firms have begun to
expand capacities. Companies in the
cleantech industry have taken great
interest in Buffalo Niagara’s hydropower, a
“clean” source of power at low rates.
With a long history in advanced
manufacturing, we provide the workforce
and physical infrastructure required.
The manufacturing industry represents
10% of all jobs in the region. Major
industry manufacturer categories
include: automotive part producers and
their suppliers; aerospace and defense
contractors; industrial chemicals;
advanced plastics and new polymers;
food packagers and processors.
Hospitality/Tourism
Buffalo Niagara is rich with history and
museums, professional sports, four
seasons of recreation, casinos, shopping,
a vibrant nightlife, top notch restaurants,
theater and more. People are at the
heart of hospitality and tourism, and our
region is fortunate that one of our most
abundant natural resources is our helpful
and friendly people. As hospitality and
tourism becomes a more sophisticated
business, educated people are a must.
We are home to a number of hospitality
and tourism administration schools.
Agribusiness
Buffalo Niagara’s agricultural heritage,
logistics capabilities, and manufacturing
bench strength combine to make our
region one of the top food production and
processing centers in the nation. Well
over a thousand food and food processing
companies make their home here. New
York is the third-largest dairy producing
state in the U.S., and many of those dairy
herds are found in Buffalo Niagara. As
one of the major dairy farm regions of the
U.S., we’re a natural for production of
milk-related products.

Buffalo Niagara has over 50 companies
with more than 16,000 employees in
customer contact centers, back office
operations, and data centers. Companies
with recent expansions include: GEICO,
Yahoo!, Sodexho, and Marriott. Advanced
business servicers find Buffalo Niagara’s
experienced, tech-savvy, “user friendly”
workforce, state-of-the-art telecom
system, and more than 106,000 miles of
fiber optic cable to be major assets for
their industry. With a large operational
cluster and well-educated and available
workforce, the region will continue to
attract additional companies.
Advanced
Manufacturing
The Buffalo Niagara region is home to
approximately 130 companies in the
medical device, therapeutics, and related
sectors, which employ approximately
6,500 people, not including those in
health care. The region’s prime location
on the Canadian-American border halfway
between Toronto, ON and Rochester, NY,
positions Buffalo Niagara within a growing
biomedical industry cluster consisting
of more than 650 companies, research
and health care centers, and $1 billion in
annual life sciences research.

Buffalo Niagara’s Great Lakes waterfront—
Lake Ontario and Lake Erie—make us
a shipping and logistics hub. Buffalo
Niagara provides a market that no other
city in the U.S. or Canada can match.
We’re home to seven international ports
of entry (four auto, two rail, one water),
facilitating $81 billion in annual trade
between Canada and the U.S. That’s
nearly 15 percent of the total trade
conducted between the world’s two
largest trading partners.

“When I tell Buffalonians that
I am from Toronto they have a
somewhat puzzled look on their
face and their first response
is ‘what are you doing here?’
My response is ‘why wouldn’t
I want to be here.’ Buffalo has
everything a major city has
but without the hassles. Major
league sports, broadway theatre,
world class philharmonic,
great restaurants–all in a
very manageable, friendly
community. What’s not to like?!

“I lived and worked in NYC for
13 years. Great for the career, but
when I married and we decided to
raise a family, we chose to move to
the Buffalo area. There is a great
quality of life, wonderful neighbors,
architecture, and nature.”
“A lot of people in the television
news business don’t stay in one
place for long, but I always find
that many who leave the Buffalo
area eventually end up trying to
come back. Why? It’s the great
people, great entertainment, great
restaurants, great schools, and great
sense of community. And, unlike
bigger cities, it’s all at an affordable
price with a lot less inconvenience.
Come and see for yourself. Life
is good in Buffalo Niagara!”
