From the
Director of Studies Desk...
Dear Parent
We have come to the end of another year, and a very eventful one at Sri Bestari. The number of activities going
on outside the classroom, and indeed outside the school, continues to grow at an amazing rate. Last week, I
headed up an interesting and successful Study Tour to Bali, where our students visited the world famous Green
School, and also travelled to a very remote part of the island, to visit a school at the East Bali Poverty Project.
This week, a group of our teachers will be visiting schools in South Korea, and the week after, another group
of students are off to Osaka, Japan.
2013 will see many new developments in Sri Bestari. Firstly, the learning environment is being improved over
the school holidays, with classrooms undergoing major renovations and overhauls, including the installation of
acoustic ceilings, new desks and lockers, and improved blackout for using the LCD projectors. Our internet
infrastructure is also being upgraded, and we shall be installing a computer-based School Management System
which will streamline and integrate all our data and record keeping in the school.
I am delighted to announce that 85% of our students in Standard 6 will be transferring to Sri Bestari Form 1
Secondary School in January. This underscores the successes of our Primary School, and indeed our Manjaria.
One unique feature of Sri Bestari is that we are akin to a family, albeit a very large one! We have many students
with siblings in two or even three of our schools. This sense of pride and belonging in our school is something
we are keen to nurture.

We shall be focussing in 2013 on making lessons more interactive, more global and more stimulating for our
students. I am a great believer in stretching students to achieve beyond expectations, and to venture beyond
the confines of the syllabus and curriculum, which can sometimes be very restricting. The world is changing at
an amazing pace, and education does not always keep pace with this change. As parents and teachers, we must
be aware and supportive of the need to go beyond the limitations of often prescriptive and outdated topics and
content. National exams are of course
very important, and good results in these will form a basis for future study and success. However, equally important to any child’s development is the infusion of leadership qualities, global awareness, confidence in communication, and above all, the ability to think and reason creatively, and ask questions. All these qualities are
encouraged within the Sri Bestari culture.
Our Parents Association is to undergo an important and essential change in 2013, when it becomes a Parent
Teachers Association. Over the past few years, the PA has been an important link between home and school.
However, I am aware that these links are not as strong as they could, or should be. Your child’s success is dependent on a joint effort, between home and school. Many research projects around the world on this subject
have all come to one very strong and unanimous conclusion: the most successful schools with the most successful students are those where parents and teachers work closely together, for the benefit of the child. Earlier
this year, I sent out an important document to all Sri Bestari parents, called “Parents Guide to Effective and
Successful Learning.” This document was intended to help parents understand more about what goes on in
their child’s learning here at Sri Bestari, and importantly, how you, the parent, can support what we are doing,
at home. If you did not receive a copy, or would like another one, please let us know. I am hoping that 2013
will see a big increase in the number of parents who interact on a regular basis, with their child’s teachers, and
with the school.
Two additional languages, French and Japanese, are being introduced in 2013. A sports specialist is being recruited, and additional sports are being considered. The timetable for 2013 will include extended periods, and
with less short periods. This will allow students to focus more, with greater understanding and retention.
Encouraging our students to organise themselves is a very important skill which we want to encourage. To that
end, every student in Upper Primary and Secondary schools will be required to have a Sri Bestari organiser in
January, which can be purchased very cheaply from the school shop. This will include key information, such as
their personal timetable, school information, and a diary for keeping track of homework, assignments etc.
The school’s libraries will continue to expand, with a further purchase of books from overseas, and also the
implementation of a “Let’s Read!” campaign.
We look forward, with your continued support and encouragement, a successful and fruitful 2013 at Sri Bestari
School. To those celebrating, a very happy Christmas, and to all parents and students, we wish you a happy,
healthy and prosperous 2013.

very realistic educational environment that allows kids between the ages
of four to twelve to do what comes naturally to them: role-playing by mimicking traditionally adult activities. As in the real world, children perform
"jobs" and are either paid for their work (as a fireman, doctor, police officer, journalist, shopkeeper, etc.) or pay to shop or to be entertained. The
indoor theme park is a city built to scale for children, complete with buildings, paved streets, vehicles, a functioning economy, and recognizable
