VSJMC Conference discusses
women empowerment and media
The two-day National Conference on
‘Women Empowerment, Skill Enhancement
and Media: Prospects and Challenges’ was
organised by Vivekananda School of Journalism and Mass Communication (VSJMC)
on April 22 – 23.

session. The speakers stressed on building gender sensitive and gender neutral society and underlined the significant role the media need to play in the process.
The plenary session guests included, Mr. Ashok Shrivastav, senior news anchor, DD News ; Ms.
Richa Anirudh, news anchor, IBN7; Dr. Vaneeta Shanker, Executive Director, SILF and Ms. Rashmi
Anand, writer and social worker. Prof. Ambrish Saxena, Dean, Research and Publications, was
moderator for the session.
The conference dedicated one session to UG and PG students who presented their papers on topics
like ‘Feminism: The Illusion of Women empowerment’, ‘Cyberspace Savagery against Women: problems, Perspective and Solutions’ and ‘Gender Equality and Women Empowerment’.

More than 40 researchers presented their papers and

Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Manipur, Andhar Pradesh, Telangana, Chhatisgarh, Himachal
Pradesh, Karnataka, Orissa, Maharashtra, Bihar,
Assam and Hyderabad.

VLS farewell marked by music and drama
Vivekananda Law School (VLS) organised a farewell for its outgoing batch (Batch 2011-16) on April 13 in the Vivekananda Hall.
The event warmed up with some interactive game sessions,
which was followed by a semi-classical dance performance, followed by a group song by VLS Music Society. Manas Aggarwal
recited a self- composed poem followed by a group dance, setting the rhythm to the event. Abhimanch, the theatre society of
VLS, melodramatically portrayed the life of a law student in a humorous manner through a theatrical performance.
Towards the end, a movie capturing moments from the life of almost every student of the passing out batch was played under the mist of nostalgic numbers. This
work was primarily a compilation of efforts made by Ms. Sanya Sehgal and was appreciated with a
thunderous applause.

Student seminar on Criminal Justice System
marked by keen participation
The student seminar, organized by Vivekananda Law School
(VLS) on the theme “CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IN INDIA:
COMTEMPORARY CHALLENGES” on April 7, invited encouraging participation by the students. The interventions and deliberations enriched the academic environment in VIPS.
The students presented research papers on the sub themes of
emergence of new crimes, cybercrimes and loopholes in criminal
justice. They discussed many impressive points and did good
amount of research on their respective sub-themes.

The event was organized by the faculty members, Ms. Rumi Roy, Dr. Pooja Malik and Ms. Mansi
Gandhi. This learning event began with an introduction of the theme by Dr. Pooja Malik, following
which Dr. Neeru Nakra (Professor VLS), Dr. Anuradha Jain (Dean, VSBS) and Dr. Rashmi Salpekar
(Dean, VLS) enlightened the students with their wise words.

New Delhi and Faculty of Law, Meerut College on 19- 20 March.

Student Congress held to deliberate on New Media issues

(VSJMC)
hosted‘The Student Congress
Event for New Media’. The Event
was basically a contest, which
aimed at letting groups of students compete against each
other, through informative presentations on
some particular pre-decided topics of the Student Congress. Students from Fourth Semester
of BJMC participated in the contest.
The objective of the Student Congress was to
create an academically rich learning experience,
by making groups of students write research papers on certain topics related to the university
syllabus of New Media.
The topics for the event were decided beforehand and the time frame allotted to the students
for each presentation was between 10-15 minutes. Each group of presenters had a unique
topic. The event was judged by Dr. Charulata
Singh, Dean VSJMC; Dr. Amit
Channa; Ms. Neha Pandey;
Mr. Sahil Koul; Dr. Ankit
Sharma and Dr. Manoj Singh.
The Congress was moderated
by Upasana Goyal, IV Semester BJMC.
Dr. Charulata Singh and a respected Jury Member awarded the top five participants with the cash prizes at the end of the
contest. The first prize carrying Rs 1000 was

prize of Rs 500 was won by Shubham Mishra

challenges in India) and the Second Consolation
Prize went to Manik Berry and group (Digital Divide: India's perspectives and challenges).
Law students hone their skills in Intra Mediation Competition
The Intra Mediation competition organised at the
Vivekananda Law School (VLS) on April 11 proved a great
learning experience for the participating and organising students. More than 70 students participated in the competition;
and the best ones were awarded for their exemplary performance.
A team of five students including a Mediator, two clients
(plaintiff as well as defendant) and two counsels representing
both of them was formed. The students participating as teams
were initially provided training by Ms. Monika Srivastava, a
trained mediator.

In all, twelve teams were formed and the competition took Academic Council, VIPS, distributing

at VLS judged the competition on a wide ranging criterion, the duration of which was 40 minutes.
The certificates were awarded to Best Mediator, Best Counsel and Best client. The runners up in all
the categories were also given certificates. The certificates were awarded by Prof. J.L Gupta, Executive Chairman, Academic Council, VIPS along with the Dean, VLS Dr. Rashmi Salpekar.
The organising committee members comprising faculty members Ms. Monika Srivastava, Ms.
Deepali Vashisht, Ms. Khushboo Taliwal, along with student coordinators Nilesh Bhardwaj, Suhas
Venkatraman and Divya Sugandh worked hard to make the event a success. The student volunteers
who contributed significantly included Shruti Vats, Swadha Gupta, Roopali Mohan, Bhoomika, Shivanker Wadhwa, Ayushi Bansal and Sukriti.

College.
The inaugural ceremony was addressed by Prof. M.S. Parmar, Vice Chancellor, Kushabhau Thakare
University of Journalism and Mass Communication, as Chief Guest. Mr. N. K. Singh, General Secretary, Broadcast Editors’ Association delivered keynote address. Dr. Parvinder Sharda - Editor-inChief, Punjab Kesari, also addressed the gathering.
The seminar invoked the discussion related to the issues of media and governance revolving around
the investigative journalism; media accountability, censorship and freedom of the press; question
of authority and control by the state, communication and global change in connection with the mainstreaming of the marginalized groups so that participation of all in the democracy and governance
may be ensured.
The objective of the seminar was to shed greater light on all relevant aspects of media studies - including mass communication, media technology and all other key components of media, state and
the marginalized.
Veteran journalist and Padma Shri awardee Mr. Jawaharlal Kaul made valedictory address. Senior
broadcast journalist Ms. Alka Saxena enthralled the audience with her views. Dr. Nivedita Giri,
Convener of the seminar, presented the report card and proposed the vote of thanks.
In HTML Workshop, Journalism students learn
how to design a website
An HTML workshop for the BJ(MC) students of semester 4 was conducted on March 31 in the auditorium of
VIPS for guiding them about making a website. The
activity of website designing is prescribed as one of
the practical assignments of New Media.
The lecture was taken by Prof. Supriya Madan, Dean,
VSIT. The students were taught the basics of coding
which can be used in making a simple static website.
They were also told about tags for inserting hyperlinks,
background colour, tables, charts, images and marquee.

6th Intra Mock Trial Competition held at VLS
Twenty-four students participated in the 6th Intra Mock Trial Competition
organized by Advocates’ Legion on April 6. The problem was drafted on
the criminal law. The court proceedings took place in Moot Court Room.
The essence of the competition was cross examination. The participants
were given training session in framing and asking leading questions only.
Students from II and IV semester were given training to become witnesses. The competition was judged by the faculty committee and faculty
coordinator.
The winners of the competition included Deepal Dhaiya (Best Defence Counsel) and Abhinav
Chaurasiya (Best Prosecutor). Mayank Singhal (Second Best Defence Counsel) and Manan Gambhir (Second Best Prosecutor).
The faculty members involved in organizing the mock trial competition included Dr. Neelam, Dr.
Shivani Singh, Ms. Sushila Sharma, Ms. Khushboo Taliwal, Ms. Pooja Malik and Ms. Deepti Kohli.
Dean, VLS attends international conference as invitee
Prof. Rashmi Salpekar, Dean, Vivekananda Law School (VLS) was invited as a guest in the International Conference on “Resurgent India Opportunities for the Indian Legal Sector and Professionals” , held on 21st March at hotel Le Meridian , New Delhi. The conference was organized by the
Ministry of Trade and Commerce in collaboration with the Indian Corporate Counsel Association
(ICCA) and Ministry of Law and Justice. Team of 20 students, having the highest attendance in the
class of eighth semester also received an opportunity to witness the proceedings of the conference.
Various well known law firms, Secretary of involved Ministries and government officials along with
the academicians were present in the conference.
FACULTY ACHIVEMENTS
Prof. (Dr.) Ambrish Saxena, Dean, Research and Publication Coordination, VIPS, has been
nominated member of the CBSE Expert Committee set up to review and develop the Curriculum
and Content of Mass Media Studies and Mass Media Production vocational course (Level I, II, III
and IV) under NSQF. He was involved in deliberations held in the CBSE headquarters in the last
week of April.
Ms. Shruti Nagpal, Assistant Professor, VSJMC, was invited to deliver a special talk on the nuances of Visual Language and Narratives by the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Delhi)
on April 2. Her talk focused on the shifts in the film narratives and the way the coming up of the
digital media has changed the documentary film movement and video revolution in the country. The
talk was organised as part of the programme where young national and international scholars from
different fields are invited to present and discuss their work.

Court Competition’ held on 8th April at School of law, Sharda University
Prof. (Dr.) Ambrish Saxena, Dean, Research and Publication Coordination, VIPS, has been
nominated Expert member in the College Research Committee (CRC) of the College of Journalism
and Mass Communication, Teerthanker Mahaveer University (TMU), Moradabad. He reviewed the
work of PhD scholars in the CRC meeting held in the last week of March.
