MARCELLO ANGELINI, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Every Tulsa Ballet season is engineered to achieve a multitude of goals and strike a host
of balances. Our 2012/13 season was no exception. We need to accomplish innovation
and balance it with tradition, we need to stretch the stylistical range of our dancers and
balance it with technical purity, and we need to produce works that appeal to a wide
range of audience members while performing dances for the somewhat smaller, yet very
important, section of our audience with the most discriminating taste. Lastly, we are
committed to contribute to the growth of dance both locally, nationally and internationally
by commissioning at least three new works a year, thus augmenting the contemporary
repertory for our generation and fostering the growth of present and future dance
makers. Meeting all these goals is a tall order and yet a challenge that I enjoy year after
year. I hope you’ll agree with me that we succeeded in this balancing act!
The first program of the season, Age of Innocence, was an example of balance
within the balance. We introduced Tulsa to one of the most popular dance makers of
our time, Wayne McGregor. Wayne is the Resident Choreographer of the Royal Ballet
in London and is considered to be “the” dance maker who is revolutionizing the way
we see and perceive dance in the 21st century. Jorma Elo’s Slice to Sharp is still as challenging today as it was two
years ago when we first performed it, while Edwaard Liang’s Age of Innocence is probably my favorite, emotionally
charged short work of the past decade.
Dracula will always be an audience favorite and one of my favorite full evening story ballets. Sadly it was also
the last opportunity to see Principal dancer Alfonso Martín at work. Our 2012 Nutcracker set another milestone for
our organization: it was the highest netting Nutcracker in the history of Tulsa Ballet!
Lady of the Camellias is a piece for the discriminating dance audience. It earned us the “…one of the best in the
world” headline when we performed it in Portugal in 2002 and ten years later this piece has not lost an ounce of its
charisma. The balance of exciting dancing, dramatic duets, conflict and passion, betrayal and true love makes this
work a unique jewel in the story ballet’s genre.
Balance was also the theme of our March performances. We introduced another celebrated dance maker
to our audience, Yuri Possokhov, in addition to being San Francisco Ballet’s Choreographer in Residence, has
created works for some of the top ballet companies in the world, from the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, Russia, to the
Joffrey Ballet in Chicago. He joined another two World Masters, James Kudelka and George Balanchine, in our
first program at the Lorton Performance Center, the perfect space for a triple bill program. Balanchine, the great
master of American Dance, Kudelka, the most celebrated Canadian Choreographer, and Possokhov, pushing the
boundaries of classical ballet, made for an evening of excellence.
Lastly was our creation evening, Off the Floor: Creations in Studio K. I have often said that the balance of dance
for our generation is very similar to our own private bank accounts: we can only take out as much as we put in. With
the performances in Studio K we contribute, or deposit, three new works in the vault of dance every year, works
that are then performed by other companies around the world just like we perform works created for other dance
organizations here in Tulsa. Last season we were joined by two nationally and internationally known choreographers,
Matthew Neenan, Artistic Director of Ballet X and Resident Choreographer of the Pennsylvania Ballet, and Nicolo
Fonte, Resident Choreographer of Ballet West. Their works were innovative and imaginative, each in its own way.
And of course we all enjoyed Ma Cong’s creation, Juxtaposed. Every new work of our Resident Choreographer
brings new elements of creativity and seems to be better than the previous one. For Ma Cong, the sky is the limit!
The Last Dance brought back decades of great dancing and great achievements both for our dancers and for
the company. It marked the end of an era and the beginning of a new phase of Tulsa Ballet. We will forever be
grateful to Alexandra Bergman, Ma Cong and Alfonso Martín for their contributions to the growth of Tulsa Ballet.
Their legacy and commitment will continue to inspire generations of dancers. Ashley Blade-Martín also participated
in the gala and, to add to the drama of the evening, Daniela Buson returned to the stage, making the moment both
jubilant and emotional. Ballerinas like her come around once every other generation. Artistry, versatility, commitment
to excellence…poetry in movement that moves you. Alexandra, Ma and Alfonso, you will definitely be missed!
Sincerely,
Hyonjun Rhee + Youhee Son

It was an emotional final dance for three long-time Tulsa Ballet
principal dancers, as more than 400 fans, family members and
Tulsa Ballet members gathered on May 17th. The performance
was their career finale and celebration. As the curtain fell on
the University of Tulsa’s Lorton Performance Center stage at
the end of the 2012/13 season, Alexandra Bergman, Ma Cong
and Alfonso Martín began their retirement.
The emotional audience enjoyed an evening of dance and
stories. James D. Watts of the Tulsa World led a conversation
as the dancers reminisced about their first
impressions of Tulsa and how they grew as
artists on the Tulsa stage.
After sharing their stories, the three Principals
were joined by Martín’s wife and Tulsa Ballet
alumna, Ashley Blade-Martín, to perform an
excerpt from Cong’s Carmina Burana. Ballet
Mistress Daniela Buson even returned to the
stage to dance with her long-time partner,
Martín and they performed a pas de deux from
Lady of Camellias. Bergman and Cong had a
last pas de deux and the evening ended with
a special piece Cong created for their farewell
from the stage.
Martín starts a new career with the ballet as
the Artistic Manager of Tulsa Ballet II for the 13/14 season.
Cong, too, will continue to have his home base in Tulsa as he
continues as the Ballet’s Resident Choreographer and carry
Tulsa’s brand of excellence to other companies as he builds
his new choreography career.

center for dance education
2012-2013 marked the 10th anniversary of Tulsa Ballet Center for
Dance Education! We have come so far in the past decade and truly
made an impact on the advancement of ballet in our community and
beyond. We have seen a former CDE student join our main Company, we
have promoted several of our CDE students into our second company,
TBII, and we have trained hundreds of students in our Pre-Professional
track. We have grown a world class summer intensive program, Pointe
to the Future, which attracts students and faculty from around the world
to Tulsa every year. Our students have won numerous awards on the
regional and national level, including medal winners at the prestigious
Youth America Grand Prix. We have impacted over 50,000 local
students through our multiple education and outreach programs. All of
this in just 10 years…and we are just getting started!

CDE WELCOMES NEW SCHOOL
PRINCIPAL, PIA RUSSO
Ms. Russo has a fantastic knowledge of the
classical ballet technique, is able to teach
extremely well all levels of our school and is,
thus, able to direct the rest of the faculty in
a way that stimulates a comprehensive well
integrated school. While she was a wonderful
classical dancer, she enjoyed a career
dancing as many contemporary works as she
did classical ones. She understands not only
the necessity of having a strong technique,
but also how it applies to movement value,
use of space and versatility. Her vision for
the growth of the school is perfectly in line
with our plans for this entity.

education + outreach
Leaps Ahead and Leaps in Motion serve as one of Tulsa
Ballet’s major outreach programs. The program was designed
to re-establish the arts education classes eliminated from
school curriculums. In the 2012/13 season, the program
introduced 619 students to the physical conditioning of
classical ballet and also presented ballet’s training traditions
of developing concentration skills, strengthening visual
and aural memory, implementing verbal corrections, and
learning to work with peers. Participating schools in Leaps
Ahead have student populations with 81% qualifying for
the income-based, free-lunch program. The University of
Oklahoma Center for Applied Research helped develop
metrics for evaluating the program. Their metrics show:
14

››
››
››

››
››
››
100% of students gained deeper appreciation
of the arts
89% of students exhibited higher self-confidence
78% of students had increased focus
in the classroom
83% of students demonstrated improved posture
92% reported students demonstrated an
increased attention span
96% reported students exhibited improved
self confidence
63% reported students showed improvement
in expressing themselves verbally
75% reported students showed fewer
behavioral problems
Two students from each participating school receive
scholarships to continue their studies at the Center for
Dance Education.
More than 2,000 students also saw Tulsa Ballet II, Tulsa
Ballet’s second company, perform Backstage at the
Ballet, a 50-minute introduction to ballet and the craft
of live performance for students. Through live narration
and engaging video students learn about a dancer’s life
and all the jobs that go into staging a live performance
for the audience.
