This month we’ve mostly been at trade
shows up and around the country, like
many of our readers. So, what have
we learned...?
always asked for more colour iterations, but now it’s us too
– and filtering throughout the cycle sectors rather than just
uber style conscious singlespeed types or BMX enthusiasts.
While unlikely to knock black off its pedestal, we’ll be seeing
high vis iterations other than yellow in the near future.
What else? E-bikes. Love or hate them – they always
seem to provoke a knee jerk reaction one way or another –
there are more bright eyed and bushy tailed companies
having a stab at the electric market. There’s more on pages
57 to 59 on some new arrivals in the sector showcasing
their wares at the London Bike Show.
While we’ve been clocking up the mileage we’ve also had
a notebook and camera handy, so there multiple pages
dedicated to the shows: there’s the London Bike Show on
pages 29, 30, 45 to 47, and 49 to 51. There are pages
dedicated to the long-established Core Bike (pages 33 to 42)
and it’s younger cousin the Bike Place (pages 23 to 27).
There’s Zyro’s Open House (pages 20 and 21) and
something from Raleigh’s Heron show over the page. Not
only that, but we’ve also previews of Fisher’s Expo (pages 13
and 14) and Madison’s iceBike* (pages six, 16 and 17). So
yes, we get around. If we missed your show please drop us a
line about what we missed and we’ll gladly share it with the
trade. Just as soon as we’re back in the office.

THIS MONTH we have been mostly at
shows, like many of our readers. So
what have we spotted? Here’s a few
observations:
Firstly, there are more companies
dipping their toes in the water of
ecologically sound products, like ABUS,
Zefal and further Green Oil SKUs,
among others. In many cases these are
tentative steps and hearing first-hand
from brand managers there is a degree of uncertainty about
how popular they will be with customers. Is there a demand
for product that is mindful of environmental impact? It is a
good question and one to suck and see, as it were.
Personally, if it’s another reason to buy a particular product
– and the price doesn’t rocket up because of it – then I don’t
see why not.
Another spot from the shows is colours. More of a longterm point this, as we’ve probably already seen this over the
past few years, but one brand – lock and helmet specialist
ABUS – freely admitted that it was increasing the amount of
colours it would be releasing for many product lines in the
UK. Before, I was told, it was the US and the Far East that

Haibike range
makes UK debut
at Heron show
Raleigh house show also sees new P&A brands launch
like Clarks and Squire, alongside new team launches
By Jonathon Harker
RALEIGH UNVEILED new brands and new
cycle teams at its Heron Show, the first
house-show since its Accell takeover last year.
New brands like Accell stable mate Haibike
were on show alongside Clarks, New Loox,
Squire, and Galius Sun.
Held at Raleigh HQ in Eastwood,
Nottingham, the show was divided into three
showrooms – one for Raleigh, Diamondback
and Haibike – in addition to three P&A rooms
and a demo space for Raleigh bikes,
Diamondback, Dahon and Squire.
The full road, MTB and eMTB Haibike range
was a key draw at the show, available to see
for the first time in the UK with Raleigh’s new
brand champion David Notman displaying
the bikes (see page 47). On show were three
carbon road bike options, starting at £1,400,
12 MTB options ranging from £675 to the e:i
shock-equipped Heet and Sleek models at
£5,500 and £6000 respectively, plus three
Bosch powered all mountain e-bikes ranging
from £2750 to £4150.
In addition to new-to-Raleigh P&A brands
New Loox, Squire, Clarks and Galius Sun,
Dealers made it to the Heron
show at Raleigh HQ through

Raleigh’s Slime, SKS, Schwalbe, RSP were
showcased. The brand also had its new
Raleigh TV concept on display, which
promises in-store video consoles for cycle
dealers, featuring video content on the brands
stocked by Raleigh.
Aside from new product, the Heron event
saw Diamondback return to downhill racing
with the announcement it will be sponsoring
the 44Racing/Rockstar downhill team during
2013. The five-man team will be competing
in UK and European racing on Diamondback’s
new DH8 downhill bike, which is now
available as a frameset-only option.
Team Raleigh were also in attendance with
a launch that attracted celebrity fans –
former England cricket captain Michael
Vaughan and ex-England footballer Viv
Anderson – via an invite from Team Raleigh
sponsor, GAC. The team launch also gave
dealers their first chance to see the Team
version of the Raleigh Militis, which the 14man team will be riding during 2013.
Raleigh will also be at a series of trade
shows and demo days around the UK in
spring 2013.

MERCHANDISING
Ride the momentum
of the Olympics to
increased sales
Mercedes Ross is going to help you do that… if you come to her seminar at iceBike* that is; if you
don’t, you will be missing what she says is the best seminar on the planet. Here’s a taste of what
Ross will be covering in the General Merchandising Seminar…
DID YOU know that your customer is
changing? Well they are and you better be
ready. You have a unique opportunity this year
to cash in on the success of the Olympics.
Why? An entire population of new
customers just became interested in cycling
because of events like last year’s Tour de France
and the Olympics. Why is this important?
Those customers are not enthusiasts, they are
new to the sport. You as a retailer need to take
this into account.
So how do you convert the momentum of
the Olympics into sales? You pay attention to
the ten best practices of merchandising. These
apply to your store in any circumstance and I
will be covering these in detail in my
seminar…so you had better show up.
You have some homework to do before the
show: pay attention to these ten things before
you come. Take pictures of your store…those
are your before pictures. And then be prepared
to change it all when you get back home.
1) Marketing: Marketing to your consumer has
taken a turn into the unknown. In general you
must be paying attention to your direct
marketing, social media, website, and in-store
follow through. The message must be cohesive
and consistent. The new customer is different
to your regular consumers – part of your
marketing should include an education piece,
informing the consumer not only what you
have, but that you have the knowledge and
staff to help them enjoy it. You should also look
at new places to market to that consumer.
2) Know your Customer: Really it is a matter of
being in touch with who your existing consumer
is. The product offerings and bike types you carry
6 BIKEBIZ FEBRUARY
should speak to your customers. Now consider
what that new consumer might be interested in
and how that will affect your buy.
3) Buy for your customer: Once you’ve
established who that customer is all your
products should echo that price range to
create add-on sales. That new consumer may
be a completely different pocket book, again
something you need to consider in your buy.
“An entire
population of
new customers
became
interested in
cycling
because of last
year. Are you
ready?”
Mercedes Ross
4) Atmosphere: Bring the outside in, and don’t
“over or under merchandise” your consumers
comfort zone. Cycling can be a fun sport, or a
mode of transportation; the feeling one gets in
your store can either promote or deter sales in
any one category. Something to watch over as
you entertain a new client base.
5) Traffic Flow: The Cash Wrap and Service
placement create the initial traffic flow in your
store; what you do with the rest, well...herein
lies both the problem and the solution to
many sales, or lack thereof. As new consumers
emerge, the comfort with which they navigate
your store will forecast their return; remember,
this is all new and overwhelming to them.
6) Product placement: Where you put things
always matters. Everything has its proper place
in a well merchandised store; no matter how
big or small, it must have purpose – and that
purpose is “to sell them something they hadn’t
intended to buy!” Especially with that new
consumer who thinks bike shops are
confusing…lets un-confuse them!
7) Bike Merchandising: What types of bikes
you carry may shift. Most importantly it must
be visually clear to consumers what types
those are. Be it road, commuter, MTB, or beach
cruiser…it must make a visual statement as
such. As you consider this new consumer your
buying also needs to make a shift…keep the
display space in mind.
8) Gear Merchandising: Profit…can you say
profit? Placing the gear in such a way that the
consumer has no choice but to be exposed to
all your gear is critical. It is largely a
spontaneous buy. If they don’t see it, they
don’t buy it. And that new consumer…well
they don’t even know they need it! Again
education in signage and creating add-on sales
with merchandising is going to be critical.
9) Apparel Displays: Apparel does best if it is
displayed, placed on mannequins, and
merchandised with purpose. It is vital you buy
the correct product for the consumers walking
in your door and then merchandise it to the hilt
so they can’t help but want it. That new
consumer needs help so plan to place a human
in the section. A profound concept, but worth it.
10) Placing product on sale: Not every
decision you make is perfect. I know…I
thought you were perfect too. Nonetheless
things have to be put on sale to make room for
next year’s stuff. How you do that determines
its effectiveness and minimises your losses.
So that’s it in a nut shell. Details will be
given at the seminar and I will also be able to
address your specific issues before and after
the seminars; find me upstairs in the big tent,
so bring your pictures and notes. I can’t wait to
see you. www.icebike.co.uk

Cycle Surgery
Velocity Bikes
LOCATED IN Port Solent’s marina/retail park outside
Portsmouth, Cycle Surgery enjoys a prominent spot and
shares building space with Runners World and Snow +
Rock. The cycling store surprisingly didn’t take up a large
section of the outlet, but nevertheless there were plenty
of bikes squeezed in with plenty of commuter options.
It took a few moments to be seen with the staffer
very busy providing advice on the phones. Leaping on a
break in the barrage of calls, Mystery Shopper pounced
on the counter and found the staffer willing and able to
provide lots of advice and general chat about bikes.
This salesman really did go into depth and explained
there were a wealth of options – like a road bike if I
fancied dabbling in a bit of racing, or even a cyclocross
bike. The enthusiastic assistant seemed to have ridden
each of the bikes he discussed which gave his views
weight. Unfortunately the staffer did play with fire and
provided probably too much sizing info, potentially
losing my custom to an online competitor, though he
did point me to the Cycle Surgery site. He explained
C2W, financing and a price matching promise.
WITH A big frontage, Velocity was easy to spot along a
busy road. The salesman greeted me and offered help as
soon as I stepped in – a classic (and welcome) IBD trait.
After hearing my ‘commuter bike for around £350’ brief
he wasted no time in identifying a Ridgeback. The nononsense salesman drilled through the relevant features
without blinding me with science, concentrating on the
benefits that the bike came with, such as ready-fitted
mudguards, adjustable stem and low key colour scheme
stopping it being a theft magnet. He also hit the price
point more or less on the nose. He went on to boost my
faith in the product by explaining more about the brand,
explaining the commuter/hybrid market was one the
British brand has served well for decades. The new bike
in question wasn’t in store, but working from a
catalogue he underlined that no other bike was offering
the standard of components and general quality.
While he was clearly a man on a mission and honed
in on one bike, he was also happy to answer my general
questions and was happy to educate, with another staff
member chipping in with help during his pitch.

MYSTERY SHOPPER
Portsmouth Cycle Exchange
AS THE name suggests, a good portion of Portsmouth
Cycle Exchange floor space is given over to second hand
bikes. Greeted as soon as I came in again, I was informed
there were no second hand bikes hitting my remit, but
there were new commuter bikes in the showroom, to
which he grabbed the keys and led me out to. He
immediately got down to business and showed me one
bike that hit the brief. After visiting a number of shops
which were keen to talk about brands, I questioned the
brand in question saying I hadn’t heard of it. He replied
he had a bike worth over £2,000 and said it was
probably made in the same factory.
There were a number of other brands in the
showroom close to my brief, which I was shown after
asking for more options. While not overly familiar with
the differences between the bikes in question, advising
he doesn't usually deal with the new bikes in the
showroom, the staffer was clearly an enthusiast. The
store scores extra marks for being the only one on the
day to offer me a test ride (though to be fair some of
the others didn’t have appropriate stock in).
Cycleworld
Halfords
ONE OF three located on the South Coast, Portsmouth’s
Cycleworld probably sees a fair deal of passing trade,
placed on a busy thoroughfare with handy car parking
spaces out front. The store did let me slip into the shop
without being greeted while the staff were busy. With
most of the bikes on display in a showroom downstairs
there was ample opportunity for a customer to head
straight down there and – as the showroom is out of
sight of the counter – linger there for some time. Shop
layout aside, I approached the counter again and the
friendly staffer was keen to get out and help. While he
didn’t initially have the smoothest sales patter, his pitch
grew in confidence and he presented a wide array of
options before helping pare the choices down to a
handful of Giants that were on the money, price pointwise. Like Velocity’s salesman, the staffer at Cycleworld
keenly explained the benefits of the brand, providing
ample reasons why it was worth parting with my cash
for and bringing it back to practical points – like well
designed wheels that won’t buckle for pot holes. I left
the shop with a catalogue to mull over.
IF THERE’S one thing Mystery Shopper likes it is good
signage, the type that helps sell the product even when
there is no staff in sight or free to help. At this Halfords
branch, in the Ocean Park retail park, there was excellent
signage, explaining features and giving a customer
something to chew on, plus some ‘offers’ too. A few
circles of the displays didn’t prompt any human
assistance, however, but one staffer walking past was
easy to flag down. He was slightly flummoxed by a
broad remit, with the shop stocking plenty of options
well below £350. Initially he hinted I could go to the
website and read user reviews to help pare down my
choices, but after some discussion did arrive at a
recommendation of which models were most
appropriate to hit my brief, largely in the Carrera range.
He discussed he had sold one this morning and advised
that I wouldn’t really benefit from hitting the top end of
my budget, and I didn’t need to spend that much for a
good A-to-B bike. While it might be tempting to criticise
him for not upselling, I suspect that, in truth, a customer
would be happy to receive that kind of advice.
BIKEBIZ.COM
Summary
COOPERS BIKES was shut on the day of the visit and
Mystery Shopper ran out of time to get to Haslemere
Cycles. Happily, there was a good standard in the bike
shops of Portsmouth, a town that has a good deal of
infrastructure and seemingly a thriving bike retail sector
too, judging by the number of bike shops. Coincidence?
Of the shops that Mystery Shopper visited, it was a
difficult call a ‘winner’. On the day there was a clear
split between shops offering recommendations to those
happy to broadly discuss the choices available. If you
wanted to get a no-nonsense, highly focused bit of
advice then you’d be well served by Velocity.

EXPO 2013
Bike dealers of the UK
will be heading to St
Albans’ Sopwell House
in mid-February
Catch up with Fisher
Fisher Outdoor Leisure’s Expo 2013 takes place in just a few weeks at Sopwell House, St Albans, from
February 18th to 20th. Jonathon Harker speaks with Fisher boss Richard Allmark…
YOU USUALLY start the annual Expo
proceedings off with a charity ride. Will that
be the case this year?
The Bike Ride will be taking place on Sunday
February 17th. This year, it will be in support of
the prestigious charity Stay Strong. This is a
charity we have supported for many years
which aids and funds the everyday and ongoing
medical support of Stephen Murray, the BMX
legend who was sadly left paralysed from the
shoulders down in a tragic accident at the BMX
Dirt Finals in 2007. We will be giving attendees
the opportunity to enter our raffle with the
chance to win some great prizes courtesy of
our brands. All ticket purchase proceeds will go
to the charity. An auction will also be taking
place at our Gala Diner this year where guests
can bid to win some fantastic prizes including
signed jerseys and trips away. We wish to raise
a great deal of money for Stay Strong and raise
awareness of Stephen’s cause.
Last year we saw a raft of new brands,
including Eastway – how is that going?
Last year we used Expo as an introduction to
the Eastway concept. We’d already done a huge
amount of consumer research which validated
our concept, but Expo was all about
understanding the trade’s perception to
Eastway. The response at Expo2012 was
fantastic and over the past 12 months our
team has refined the range, specifications and
ensured that the branding and message is spot
on. When people see Eastway at Expo2013
they should get a clear understanding of the
Eastway story and we hope they will all
embrace what is a going to be one amazing
‘new kid on the block’! I am very proud of what
Eastway is and I am very excited about what
Eastway can achieve.
It’s worth remembering that Eastway is just
one of three of our own brands developed with
quality and innovation at their heart and
BIKEBIZ.COM
centred on the modern cycle commuter world:
Eastway, Kansi and U34 are the three brands
we have built especially for this exciting and
developing urban category.
“I am very
proud of what
Eastway is and
I am very
excited about
what it can
achieve.”
Richard Allmark,
Fisher Outdoor
Leisure
And what can you tell about those other
house brands?
U34 is our clothing and luggage brand for the
commuter. This brand is packed full of
innovation, from the extremely clever bracket
systems, to the technical fabric used in our
clothing which has been combined with some
amazingly stylish designs coming from our
partnership with St Martins’ College of Fashion
in London. We know we’ve challenged the
supply chain with this brand, right from the
point of manufacturing with the combination
of technical fabric and fashionable design,
through to the route to market and how best
to get U34 into the hands of the consumer. We
are confident we’ll get it right with the quality
of retail, marketing and PR partners we’ve put
together and we’re also pleased to see the
brand in the market place now at what is the
beginning of an exciting journey.
Kansi is also back on the market. Not only
can our customers feel confident that Kansi is
manufactured and QC’d to standards higher
than any of its rivals, the new samples you will
see at Expo2013 (for bikes due in late summer
2013) show even greater design and
innovation, adding further value for the
consumer.
You’ve already announced that PowerBar is
a new brand for 2013 for Fisher. Can dealers
expect to see any more brand additions
when they arrive at Expo?
Yes of course, we’d be short changing our
dealers without even more new opportunities
for 2013. At Expo we will also be introducing:
DC apparel and footwear – we are delighted to
be managing this wonderful brand for the UK
bicycle trade, Vittoria tyres is new to our
portfolio and finally, we are partnering Toby
Henderson and the CGI team to distribute the
BOX and PROMAX brands exclusively in the
UK. All these brands are on display at
Expo2013.
SRAM always has a decent space at Expo –
same again in 2013? Will there be key SRAM
lines to look out for?
The ever growing and innovative SRAM
portfolio always needs and deserves plenty of
space at Expo and this year we have extended
the exhibition space to give the SRAM portfolio
its own designated area. You’ll be able to test
out the SRAM Red Quarq equipped demo bike
and get a feel for its amazing capabilities, plus
there are some new products in the Quarq and
Zipp range which make these premium brands
more attainable to both dealers and
consumers. On the mountain bike side, for
those who have yet to see it, SRAM XX1 will
be on show as well as the latest offerings from
Avid and Rockshox.
Obviously all the new products/brands are
worth coming along to see, but can you give
us a must-see top five that dealers
shouldn’t miss?
Limiting it to five will be difficult this year with
so many first sees from our new brands, but
some of the highlights I would recommend
dealers take in include exciting new products
from Quarq, Zipp and the new eagerly awaiting
road bike from LOOK, the 675.
I would also recommend popping by the
Kansi stand where we will have some of the
new range as well as the first viewing of the
full Eastway range.
Finally, a must-see are the new U34 bags
which will be on display for the first time as
well as a sneak peak of the spring summer
clothing collection.

EXPO 2013
The Pure range
launched at last
year’s Expo
Will there be any seminars this year? Can
you give us a flavour of those?
This year, we are hosting a list of fascinating
seminars from both brands and business
specialists. On top of brand seminars from
Look, Carrera and Powerbar that will give
guests an overview on product updates and
news, we also have experts joining us to offer
free advice and support in business.
Whilst Santini will be holding talks
on increasing sales through

that has great things to shout about. Business
is not easy right now for anyone and the
economy still has many years left to recover
from the deep wounds of the 2008 credit
crunch. That said, Fisher continued to grow its
market share in 2012 with the commitment
from our staff, our customers and our brand
partners. We hope that 2013 will be an even
better year for us. When I look at the rest of
the industry I see changes happening through
the supply chain and routes to market
that will change the face of our
industry forever and Fisher,
like everyone else needs
to be ready…
Will there be special offers and show deals
for retailers attending? Can you give us a
hint about what they will include?
I could but that would spoil the surprise! What
I can say is that we always have great offers at
the show and you’ll just have to come along to
see what they are this year.
Beyond Expo,
what’s coming up
for Fisher in ‘13?
Moving in to 2013
and the coming
years, with so
much economic
uncertainty around
we must concentrate
on running our business
well. We need to work
harder at improving
productivity in our operations, gain
traction and awareness with our marketing
programmes and cut through with our sales
efforts. We’ll keep closer to the marketplace
and the consumer than ever before and ensure
that we do our best to bring more and more
innovation and relevant product to meet the
needs of and inspire the consumers.
Aside from Expo, how’s business been in the
last 12 months? For Fisher and also for the
trade in general?
Clearly cycling in the UK has a profile right
now that we’ve wished for, for many years. The
exceptional results of the Sky and GB teams
have created higher levels of interest,
awareness and participation greater than ever
before. It’s great to be operating in an industry
Anything else to add?
Each year we get great feedback from our
customers who attend the show, saying it’s one
of the warmest welcomes in the industry, so
on that note I would just like to extend our
thanks to all our dealers who come each year
and to welcome all our customers who are
thinking of attending. You won’t be
disappointed. www.fisheroutdoor.co.uk

TAIPEI CYCLE SHOW 2013
Taiwan president Ma
Ying-jeou signs a
Giant bike
Taipei Cycle Show: 10 things you didn’t know
Visiting the Taipei Cycle Show for the first time and don’t want to look like a johnny-come-lately? Or just
want to brush up on your knowledge? Jonathon Harker provides some essential facts for bluffers…
Unfailing demand for the show
has seen it smash records faster
than a particularly angry DJ. Last
year the show expanded on the
2011 exhibition by around 230
booths (to 3,284) and the exhibition halls of
Nangang had to be opened up to meet the
increasing demand for space, with over 100
exhibitors on the waiting list.
1.
Last year’s show (and 2009’s)
was opened by keen cyclist and
Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou
(pictured top right). In 2012,
Giant founder King Liu cleverly
encouraged the President to sign a Giant Bike
while the papparazi was there (including
BikeBiz’s own Carlton Reid) securing maximum
media exposure. David Cameron signing a
Brompton or Pashley at Cycle Show 2013? You
heard it here first.
2.
A handy travelling tip is that you
can be fined for eating or
drinking on Taipei’s metro
system, so if you’re travelling to
the show via the convenient
metro – it now directly connects Nangang Hall
with TWTC Hall 1 near Taipei City Hall – leave
the snacks in your hotel room. If you can’t
avoid scoffing, we hear the Taipei shuttle bus is
more lax in its eating etiquette.
3.
Arriving empty handed at your
business meeting at Taipei Cycle
Show may be as much a faux
pas as forgetting a Valentine’s
gift for your loved one.
According to Taipei Cycle organisers, Asians love
gifts from afar that bind the ties. Then again,
who doesn’t?
4.
18 BIKEBIZ FEBRUARY
For a few testing weeks in spring
2011, Canadian MTB brand Race
Face went into receivership
before, happily, it was reopened
for business, helmed by former
VP of sales Chris Tutton. The uncertain period
before the good news coincided with a (non)
appearance at Taipei Cycle 2011. The Race Face
booth was made up, with chairs installed, but
no products or staff were there –
understandably – after being told they’d no
longer be required after the firm went into
receivership days before. At least there was a
happy ending.
5.
You won’t have
to leave your
bike at home,
with a wide
reaching bike
infrastructure
now installed
across Taiwan.
While dwarfed by the likes of
Eurobike and obviously much
further away (GCSE Geography
was bound to come in handy
some day), the show still
manages to lure visitors from an incredibly
varied 36 countries, with around 300 attendees
from the UK. In fact half of the international
visitors come from Asian countries, the other
half from the US and Europe.
6.
What connects Brompton,
Velocite, Tern and SKS? They
were among the first-ever
winners of the Taipei Cycle D&I
Awards, debuting last year in
partnership with the internationally famed iF
International Forum Design. Other winners
from that inaugural edition included Jet Black,
Merida, Birzman, SRAM and Giant.
7.
Who is the biggest exhibitor at
Taipei Cycle? Giant? Merida?
Nope – the answer is closer to
home in the European shape of
COLIPED. The Association has
8.
exhibited at Taipei for 21 years and for the
second year in a row it will be hosting 34
European exhibitors, occupying 93 booths
(837 m2) in 2013, including the likes of 4ZA,
Schwalbe, Limar, Lake, Santini and the UK’s
own Weldtite. There are seven newcomers to
the booth this year.
Taiwan’s bike lanes are now
being touted as amongst the
best in the world, with literally
thousands of kilometres of paths
– not bad for a country better
known for producing bikes than for locals
riding them. The ‘Bicycle Kingdom’ has seen
new protected bike paths installed due not
least to bicycle advocacy efforts from local
companies like Giant and Merida. So while in
Taipei why not cement a deal or two on a ride
with your new business partners?
9.
More to your business
than bikes? Taipei Cycle
Show is connected to
three shows which run
alongside it and may be
of interest. Tickets afford you access to all four
shows, so you can also dip into SPOMODE,
TaiSPO and DiWas, should you wish to (and
1,100 buyers from Taipei Cycle did last year).

ZYRO OPEN HOUSE
ABUS has taken a step
into the refined retro
market with the
Cyclonaut helmet
House
call
Back once again at Yorkshire’s
Rudding Park, Zyro collected brands
and as many retailers as it could fit
into the plush hotel for its Open House
Show. Jonathon Harker was there…
SINCE BIKEBIZ was last at this show, Bryton
has picked up awards from Triathlon and
Cycling Plus alike for its GPS range. In that time
the firm has started to ramp up brand
awareness through deals with the likes of the
AG2R Modial pro team, from which it is
gleaning athlete feedback as well as marketing.
This time round at Open House, Bryton
unveiled new software content which, in a
nutshell, makes the GPS computers all the
easier to use and download rides from,
something which got the thumbs up from the
retailers in BikeBiz’s seminar sessions, making
the brand ever more competitive. The social
networking aspect was made easier too, as well
as enhanced summary info and enhanced data
management. All in all, usability was touted by
the Bryton team as a massive improvement for
the brand. But aside from software, there was
also a refresher of its current line-up plus a
new addition in the shape of the Rider 21, a
new unit sitting between the Rider 20 and 40.
Like the 20, the 21 has all the same features
but also comes with a barometer for real time
altitude, a higher res screen and increased log
history capacity.
Onto the Cardio sports watches, the brand
now has the 60 and 40 in the range. Loaded
with features, the Cardio 40 has customisable
screens, is lightweight and is ideal for training
plans. The Cardio 60 is the multi-sport version,
ideal for triathlon. There are vibration alerts for
when the user hits targets or their heartbeat
gets too high.
Finally a word on Bryton’s POS demo unit,
which comes with a TV screen and dummy
units, with space for catalogues.
The UK market continues to be strong for
ABUS’ helmet range. For the kids range, the

expanded with the Rider
21, sitting below the 20
and 40 (pictured)
Mount X and New Smiley have done very well,
both sporting an LED in the back and inmoulded shells, unlike some competitors.
Other strong sellers like the Aduro now
come in new colours (like lime and green). It
too has an LED included, detachable visor and
raft of other features. The womens’ specific
Arica has added a colour to its range, while the
Commuter-focused Signal now comes in plain
colours, not just yellow, but still comes with
full reflective features and is firmly pitched at
the C2W market. In fact the commuter market
continues to grow and the pedelec helmet is a
big seller, coming with a nifty integrated rain
cover with reflective stripes. ABUS had a few
surprises up its North German sleeve, namely
in the heritage look Cyclonaut, aimed at the
growing retro market and thought by the
retailers in the seminar to best pitched at the
London, or city, markets. It comes with a
leather strap, ear protectors and nifty
magnetic buckle.
In the innovation space, ABUS has produced
a clever helmet – the Kranium Ecolution –
combining UK design with German
manufacture. Using coated weather resistant
wood fibre board, the helmet is said to deliver
three times the protection of EPS. And what’s
more it’s environmentally friendly, or at least
more so than the average helmet with EPS.
Finally on the helmet side, the S-Force road
has two new colours (blue and red).
Altura called an Open House session to
explain to dealers how it was planning to bring
the brand to a wider selection of customers.
2012 was, the brand said, a bit of a mixed bag
sales wise due to the weather, but by the end
of the year waterproofs and Night Vision had
sold so well that the brand had to bring the
next collection forward to meet demand. In
terms of branding, the firm has released a new
consumer focused catalogue series and new
site. This year it will be sponsoring new events
and series too. Product-wise, Altura has a new
Attack Jacket to offer, a new range of
overshoes and plenty of other upgrades.
Those lucky enough to be in the CatEye
sessions will have seen that the brand has
really ramped up its lights offering, with new
SKUs, a rethink of the range and innovation
brimming out of its feline ears. Sadly we’ve
been sworn to secrecy on those, but suffice to
say the new upcoming range drew a few gasps
(in a good way) from those present. Those are
in the works at the moment and rest assured
more info will be available ahead of them
coming into stock, with many of the models
currently just prototypes. What we can be a
little more specific about is the computer
range from the brand. Backed with a ton of
YouTube videos and multiple apps and iPad
catalogues supporting the brand, new offerings
include the Stealth 10 and 50, delivering
simple GPS cycle computing, the 10 being a
sensorless offering, the 50 with ANT+
capabilities, for which a speed/cadence and
heart rate sensor are available separately.
The Strada Wireless has been upgraded with
2.4GHz tech, virtually eliminating cross talk
and interference. The V3 has has an upgraded
body and, in another crowd pleasing moment,
the firm unveiled its super slim New Strada
Wireless. Despite having a bigger screen, the
unit is 35 per cent thinner and lighter.
Moving on to one of Zyro’s new brands,
Magura – pioneer of hydraulic brakes – is now
in the portfolio. With a firm grounding in the
motor industry, developing brakes for BMW,
the brand has created the RT6 and RT8
hydraulic Rim brakes in collaboration with
Cervelo for tri and road. The firm has also
further developed its performance MTB
suspension forks and rim and disc brakes.
Importantly, Magura has slimmed down items
like brake pads, so shops won’t have to stock
multiple versions of pads and the like. Magura
has also developed a cable to hydraulic
converter, so riders can use all major Shimano
STI, SRAM and Campag Ergopower cable
operated levers and convert this into a
hydraulic system.
Child seats may not be famed for their
looks, with safety paramount in minds of
parents, but Hamax has sought to combine
the two with the high-end Caress. A Taipei
Design winner, this offering retails at £149.99
and has an adjustable sleeping position,
adjustable seat back system, adjustable
footrest system…well you get the idea with
that one – there is little that can’t be tailored

packaging, there is a

is working on a universal
adapter plate so its seats can
fit racks.
After a bit of to-ing and fro-ing,
the nutrition brands of the bike trade have
settled down and Torq now rests with Zyro. Set
up in 1999, the brand has a fitness consultancy
heritage and sticks to the mantra of only
including what is needed in the products it
makes. Working on its now well-established
maltodextrin: fructose formula – which
provides a 40 per cent increase in carb delivery
– the brand is switching from tubs to pouches,
meaning less packaging for this premium
nutrition brand.
Back to ABUS, but now on the lock side of
the business, the brand has another ‘Ecolution’
offering – the Bordo 6000. Launched at
Eurobike, the 6000 is made of recyclable
material but still offers the kind of protection
to make criminals weep. And the Bordo range
as a whole now offers Sold Secure ratings at
different price points.
New to the lock range is the Ugrip series of
D locks. Made from the same material as the
Bordo locks, these colourful offerings are beefy
and easily mountable. The firm also now offers
a range of Ugrip Cable locks pitched at juniors.
There’s much more from the firm we couldn’t
fit in here.
Zefal was showing off a range of road
mudguards that promised to be far more stable
than many in the genre, secured with two stays
that are easy to fit and take off and at a nice
price point of £29.99. There was also new
guards for the city hybrid sector, with reflective
patches to aid visibility. Also raising its green
credentials, Zefal’s Green Z range is fully
recyclable and may be the start of a wider
range dependent on demand. Other offerings
include a 29er mudguard at £17.99 and mini
pumps. The new Z-hose Pen Gauge has an
inline gauge, fitting Presta or Schrader.
High end Etxeondo is another brand looking
to boost awareness, with new POS furniture, a
new site and other marketing activities in the
works. One key development from the brand is,
while still offering some pricy, high-end highly
technical apparel, Etxeondo is now also offering
a lower entry point into the brand to act as an
easier stepping in point. Some good looking
new jackets, gillets and bib tights are on offer
in a tightened up collection.
Eyewear brand Tifosi has four new models,
still at everyday price points. The Veloce, Duro
Interchangeable (pictured), Podium – fully
shielded but with interchangeable lenses, plus
the Dolomite 2.0.

THE BIKE PLACE
Everybody in the Place...
Returning to the Silverstone racetrack once more, The Bike Trade place trade show has grown
its following over the past three years to become a must-see fixture on the early year schedule.
Mark Sutton rounds up the big news for anyone who couldn’t make it…
R53 SPORT
Announced on BikeBiz.com just days before the
show opened its doors, many were eager to see
Pyga’s frames first-hand. Founded by
Morewood creator Patrick Morewood, Pyga, the
South African label will have stock in the UK by
the end of February and a further carbon
hardtail to land later this year. For now dealers
have two frames to add to their stock.
To complement the mountain shredding
aspirations of any customer buying into Pyga,
R53 also carries the ICE label, thrust into the
limelight for its £120 dropper post, which
comes in the so far rare-ish 27.2 diameter. The
show also saw the introduction to many of a
27.2 carbon race post, complete with a pivotal
head – perfect for the weight conscious racer.
Stepping away from exotic components, ICE
also produces a full-face helmet in four sizes
that caught the attention of many.
Now in charge of Spanish bikes, components
and accessories label Massi – The Bike Place
also saw the debut of the distribution firm’s
link up – with a wide range of accessories
including one of the slimmest multi tools we’ve
seen to date on show, alongside what was
described to us as ‘the lightest’ full carbon
saddle on the market at 84 grams.

SCUTE DESIGN
Squarely aimed at the cycle commuter who’s
perhaps a bit nervy in traffic and wants there
to be no mistake about their movements in
traffic, Scute Design’s gloves flash once an
index finger button is pressed. The quality of
the red LEDs will certainly get you noticed,
flashing brightly in the daylight of the show
and no doubt much brighter come nightfall.
Retailing for £36, the glove can be recharged
via a simple USB connector in four hours,
making them ideal for the office worker. That
length of charge gives you the equivalent
feedback. Creator of the product Alistair
Malcolm advised that both a full length and
mitt version of the glove are available and both
carry the usual sweat wipe and padded palms.
VELOCITE
Velocite’s stand was a busy one at times
according to director mark Almond, much
thanks to the new distribution model
announced on BikeBiz.com just days earlier.
With dealers curious about the new
commission for sales model, requiring very
little commitment to stock, Almond said he
feels retail has been crying out for more
flexibility for some time.
The new scheme will see Velocite
distributing direct to consumer, but unlike
many other direct sell brands, Velocite are
seeking retailers to partner with.
With reduced retail prices to the consumer,
the scheme has been designed to offer retailers
the option of selling the brand on a level price
point to many of the existing online-only
brands. Each sale will earn a percentage and all
partners will receive marketing support and 24
hours a day, seven days a week account
management by the Red Cloud team.
In addition to the commission schemes for
sales, the brand is also seeking service partners
to carry out free-to-consumer first services
where each partner will be paid by Red Cloud
for their time. With a new website due in
March and a partnership with the RWD Brakes
WC MTB team, Velocite will no doubt be in the
news again soon.

CLEE CYCLES
If you’d made it up to the mezzanine level of
the show, you’d no doubt have been drawn to
the glow of Clee Cycle’s stand, which was
adorned with all sorts of lightweight, polished
goods from KCNC, as well as a freshly brought
in titanium label called Torus.
With nearly everyone in the business
wishing they could deck their shop floors out
with exotic titanium builds, Torus tempts with
several bang-on-trend builds. There’s no 26inch builds here, just 650B, 700c and 29er
frames, as well as posts, bars and forks.
KCNC has been busy too, with the show
providing first looks at the Aerotech and fully
adjustable Centrelock aerobars. Boxed sets of
anodised V-brakes were also revealed, with a
VB1 titanium hardware set costing £380 at

OK Baby is a brand new
addition for Nemesis
NRG4
Few will have spotted it thanks to its discreet
size, but Tumble and Fall has come up with
something a bit different for the lighting
market. Ever so simple in its design, though still
in the testing stages, the brand has linked a
handlebar mounted two button cockpit control
to its front and rear lights, meaning you can
manage the output of both while on the move,
switching the front between 1,000 and 500
lumens and the rear between constant and
flashing modes.
Elsewhere on the stand and also for the
gadget-mad customer, Showers Pass has
developed a series of iPad and mobile phone
cases that are double locked and fully sealed
against the elements. Your customer’s
touchscreen gadgets will cleverly work once
sealed inside too, so very easy to demo on the
shop floor.
Unich also debuted a £37.99 hand pump
with a fold out foot and gauge indicator for
ease of use that’s well worth a look too.
NEMESIS ACTIVE
Having undergone a bit of a transformation in
the past year, Nemesis Active had plenty of
surprises on its stand, with the announcement
of its distribution of OK Baby, just one.
Nemesis now has stock of the full £59.99
through £114 range, with the later price point
being for the ‘Sirius’ recliner that drops the
back plate through 30 degrees at the push of a
button for the more relaxed child.
Flagging up early its free delivery and no
minimum order policy, Nemesis were keen to
do business at the show, catching many dealers
while they’d been drawn to the ‘Sunnycam’
video recording sun glasses taking pole position
on the stand. Sunnycam is a product that has
evolved from the commuting market, rather
than the extreme sports side of recording your
ride. Supplied with a 16GB card, the glasses will
record two and a half hours of continuous
footage at 720p, though full 1080 is due in the
next year. Boasting a circuit board developed
with no less than British Aerospace and with a
handy USB recharge, these are bound to do
well at just £99.99.
MADFORM
Madform exhibited for the first time and
having conquered the Spanish market, now has
its sights set on the UK market.
The company specialises in helping athletes
get going with a series of pre-sport and
recovery creams that open up the blood vessels
and stimulate circulation in stiff areas. Ideal for
those who regularly suffer from cramp, the
active ingredients fight off early fatigue and
strains, while the ‘MadFreeze’ product can even
assist in reducing swelling.

GLOWORM
All the way from New Zealand and having
already scored a 4.5 out of 5 in an MBUK
product test, Gloworm’s first appearance at a
UK trade show signalled their intent to make
some waves in the market here.
Using only high performance CREE XML V3
LEDs and Panasonic lithium ion batteries, the
two light line retails at £125 for an 850 lumen
and £165 for a 1,200 lumen light. The latter is
capable of 2.5 hours on high, but up to 20
hours continuous on its lower setting. With a
low profile and highly adjustable fitting gear,
this isn’t a bulky ‘get caught up in the trees’
helmet light.
Velo is now found in
the Independent stable
BURGTEC
Revealing itself to be the new home of
Morewood Bikes in the UK, Burgtec’s stand,
shared with newcomer Air Distribution,
displayed the likes of the ‘Jabula’ – a seven
inch rear wheel travel build with a custom
Syntace X12 rear axle. The all-mountain
frame’s Dual Concentric Design is a
lightweight, minimalist take on a pro-active
suspension design said to be unphased by
compression, with forces exerted on the shock
transferred back into the frame at the main
pivot. Burgtec also revealed a V4 version of its
pedal, following the trend for a thinner
platform, as well as offset titanium bushes at
£46.99.
2X2
With Montague and Land Rover covering the
mountain bike dealer, 2x2 has now introduced
a ‘700c only’ label dubbed Roux.
With a nine model range, two of which are
cyclocross builds, each sits under £999 making
it a wholly Cycle to Work scheme friendly-line.
With Touring overlooked in many US road
brand’s lines, Roux has stepped in with a steel
disc model.
The eye catcher for many was a £899 eightspeed Nexus belt drive build, specced with SR
Suntour’s Swing fork, perfect for taking the
sting out of any potholes, or for the
increasingly popular ‘take your road bike off
road’ rider.
Roux’s range begins at £450 for a 7005
smooth welded frame with full Shimano spec.

INDEPENDENT
With more and more ‘adjust your head angle’
devices hitting the market, price is suddenly
becoming an ever-important issue and VP have
recognised this early on, coming in with their
take on the adjustable headset with the Varial,
priced at £180.
Adjustable on the fly via two allen bolts, the
Varial allows for three positions allowing for a
1.5-degree change in three 0.5-degree
increments. The headset has a full cartridge
bearing construction and is in stock now.
Velo is now also found within the
Independent stable and was represented well at
the show, with the Senso, Plush and other lines
shown alongside Velo’s bar tape and grip
product off shoots.
Given that the majority of the world’s bike
saddles come from Velo’s factories, it’s hardly
surprising to have spotted the Senso ‘1261’ a
£50 performance saddle with a lightweight
honeycomb mold and titanium rails as
standard. A female-specific version is also
available from the firm.

AIR DISTRIBUTION
Housing the KHS, Marshguard and own-brand
Csix, Air Distribution drew our attention to the
new carbon-only chainguide components,
unique in their shape and of course, incredibly
light weight. Actively seeking dealers with a
forte for good mountain biking product,
founder Steve Csixx explained that a lot of
thought has gone into the layout of the
carbon’s positioning, ultimately to reduce noise
and any drag from the chain and this is evident
in the shaping of the £70 cross country guide
and £180 downhill guard in particular.

LONDON BIKE SHOW 2013
The London Bike Show review
The first of January’s shows kicked off at London’s ExCeL, bringing to the exhibition centre four days of
bikes, boats and Bear Grylls. Mark Sutton picks some of the highlights from the crowded isles…
ATB SALES
The eye catcher from ATB’s stand came in the
form of the addition of after-market branded
Whyte components, “designed to keep the
customer in the brand when things eventually
wear out,” according to designer Ian Alexander.
You’ll no doubt have caught wind of the
label’s own carbon fibre 29er wheels posted on
BikeBiz.com last month, but these are followed
by riser bars, grips, stems supplied with
interchangeable coloured face plates and
various saddles.
The show also saw a debut appearance for
Whyte’s T129s full-suspension bike, said to
have recently ‘blitzed’ a consumer magazine
test. With Alexander’s own approach to fullsuspension 29er design, this bike carries a sub
17-inch chainstay, allowing more length to be
placed in the front and a slacker head angle
built in for an agile build with ‘more pop’.
These are in stock with ATB now and come
in either a 100 or 120mm option, both retailing
for £2,000.

“I think we’ll
see the ‘fat
bike’ become
accepted as a
category of its
own.”
John Fleck, Ison
ISON
Split into quarters, Ison brought four bike
brands along to its stand, with the Salsa stand
providing the most standout builds for
consumers dazzled by the snow outside.
Salsa’s fat-tyred BearGrease is something the
label’s own John Fleck hopes will catch on as
the UK comes to terms with all-weather cycling.
“I think inside a few years we will see the ‘fat
bike’ become accepted as a category in its own
right, particularly for the explorer” said Fleck.
“It’s a viable bike year round and loads of fun
on any terrain. There’s half a dozen tyre styles to
fit this bike, so there’s very little it can’t handle.”
Salsa also debuted its new road-going discequipped frameset, the Collosal, in stock at Ison
now and retailing for £899. Described as an all
conditions endurance build, this bike will deal
with light off-road should your customer be a
fan of shortcuts.
Surly is this year to change its model year
arrangement with shipments set to follow the
traditional schedule as opposed to the
previously employed September delivery.
SCHWALBE
Following on from Ison’s solution to overcoming
winter weather, Schwalbe introduced a new
studded winter tyre with its KevlarGuard in sizes
700x30/35/40c and 26x 1.75. Carrying 12spikes, the £30 tyre carries a reflective sidewall
and, should they be needed, the Tungsten
Carbide studs can be ordered as spares if your
customer does eventually wear them out.
All Schwalbe’s low-end tyres have now been
upgraded with Kevlar protection as standard.
USE AND EXPOSURE
Another new entry to the carbon wheels
market, USE introduced a line of seven wheels,
including one disc, a 29er clincher a cyclocross
tubular and many more. Already an expert in
aerodynamics and working with carbon, USE
has coated each of its wheels in a ‘nanotech
BIKEBIZ FEBRUARY 29

surface’, designed to help the surface layer of
the rim shed any grime accumulated. Erring
toward the side of longevity, USE concede
these aren’t aiming to be the lightest on the
market, opting for a higher spoke count where
possible to increase the rigidity and strength
benefits of the wheels. Retailers in the time trial
and tri spaces should also look out for USE’s
new R1 and Boost aerobars. The boost weighs in
at 220 grams and is highly adjustable.
Exposure’s new Flash and Flare rear lights
joined the party for the first time too and are
in stock now, alongside the 800 lumen Revo
dynamo-powered light.
By the time you read this, the distributor
plans to have converted one of its units to
become the service centre for the product too,
so if you’re after a supplier of quality
suspension for everything from cross country
to downhill, BOS may be worth a look.
Greame Fuller of Surf Sales told BikeBiz:
“BOS’s downhill fork lasted three consecutive
days in the test rig before failure, a much
longer spell than any other we tested and
those include the main market competitors.
The product is in a league of its own and we’ll
now be able to spec the product on select
Transition bikes should the customer wish.”
One Madison
highlight was
the Genesis

build ‘Fugio’,
crafted from

steel.
CUBE
Plenty of fresh goods to feast the eyes upon on
Cube’s stand, with fresh cyclocross rigs, 650b
and 29er builds and the addition of a collection
of aftermarket accessories and soft goods.
Cube’s 150 UK dealers will now have access
to own branded brake pads or most of the
market’s big brands, as well as soft goods
including winter beanies, all the way through
to a variety of bottle cages, pumps and more.
Each of the accessories, BikeBiz is told, comes
in a range of price points for varying budgets.
Cube introduced its entry-level full
suspension 650b build, described by the firm as
“the new kid on the block” and retailing for
£2,999. Elsewhere, the top-end full-sus 29er,
weighing in at 9.85 kilos for the complete bike
and retailing for £6,299, was introduced.
SURF SALES
Having spent some time with suspension
expert BOS in France last year observing its
operation, Surf Sales has now become the UK
distribution partner.

VELO BRANDS
If Velo Brands weren’t on your radar before the
show, they certainly should have been by the
end of the play on the Sunday – much thanks
to an eye-catching inner tube. Yes, you read
that right.
The water tank hosting this particular FOSS
tube with a nail punched through it was
surprisingly calm. No air at all leaking, despite
the nail travelling directly through the unique
thermo plastic air chamber. The only downside
is reproducing such an impressive display in
store to convince customers of the £20 price
tag, per tube. BikeBiz can confirm however,
that this does appear to be one of the
toughest and apparently, lightest and ecofriendly inner tubes around and one available
in the majority of sizes.
Elsewhere, many were drawn to the
distributor’s own in-house designed Chapeau
clothing and accessories label. Beginning with
chamois creams and expanding quickly into
baselayers, waterproof jackets and bibs,
Chapeau’s catalogue covers various price
points. Also of note is a tidy messenger bag,
tailored with straps to sit snugly within the
front triangle of any hardtail frame.
Velo Brands are also importing the Rido
Saddles label, which for those who haven’t
heard of the label before, has quite a strong
following. Velo Brands MD even told us that
everyone at his firm has converted from other
top-end saddles to the Rido since trying them
out. These will be of particular interest to any
customer experiencing discomfort stemming
from their saddle. One model, costing £70, is
available in various colour configurations.
Velo Brands also brings in French custom
built frameset manufacturer Cyfac’s product, as
well as own brand Juice Lubes.
MADISON
As in previous years the Milton Keynes
distributor has made the journey south,
Madison took over a significant chunk by the
entrance to the bike exhibition and dedicated a
large chunk of one booth to retail sales, which
proved a big draw for the consumer crowds.
Beyond the shoppers, Madison had an
equally busy chunk of space dedicated to
Ridgeback, Cervelo, Genesis, Saracen and other
bike brands found within their stable. One
highlight of this space was a Genesis cyclocross
build crafted from heat-treated Reynolds 853
steel – tentatively dubbed the ‘Fugio’.
Following on from the popular CdF, this discspecific build has the oversized headtube that
allows for a tapered fork. Price and availability
are to be confirmed.
BOARDMAN
It’s not just Halfords that carries Boardman, in
fact the IBD can carry plenty not found in the
retail giant’s stores, including the £5,500 Air 9.8
that carried the Brownlee brothers to Olympic
victory last summer.
With a two year model cycle, new models
aren’t expected until next year, but should
independents wish to dabble, no minimum
stock up is required. The trade contact for UK
enquiries is Jamie Mitchell, available on 07522
404650. There’s more on the London Bike
Show in this issue of BikeBiz, on pages 45 to
47, 49 to 51 and 82 to 83.

WINDWAVE
Revealing that a new B2B portal is in the
pipeline, complete with live stock updates,
Windwave's warehouses are to be fully
computerised this year. Following on from a
year where "business has grown significantly",
those who had yet to see Morgan Blue and
Dainese's product first hand had their chance,
with the former in stock and the later due at
the end of March.
Already reputed for its wide usage in the pro
tour, Morgan Blue, alongside Windwave has
revealed a custom labelling program, meaning
retailers may have their shop's logo printed on
the bottle for any order above 48 pieces. From
that order onwards labelling is free of charge.
A2Z has added another feather to its cap,
with the introduction of replacement disc pads
for all the major manufacturers under the Xtop
banner. At £7.95 per set, these are perfect for
any customer looking for a wallet friendly fix
and what's more, the margin is said to be
strong for dealers. For performance pads, BBB
also offers the 'top-end' compounds for all
major brands.
Windwave also pointed to an Icetoolz
countertop unit housing glueless puncture
repair kits that would be worth a look.

UPGRADE
Proving that it's not just a one trick pony,
Praxis introduced a product that the market
has been crying out for – a BB30, OSBB and
PF30 bottom bracket for Shimano cranks.
Designed to perfectly align the outboard
bearing cups and to hold the two steady, the
cartridge bearings will remain creak free thanks
to some clever engineering from Praxis. The
non drive side cup presses in, while the shorter
drive cup threads in. As the two sides link up a
collet system expands inside the shell to evenly
disperse pressure and secure the unit. This
design also uses a compressible o-ring on the
non-drive side cup to compensate for bottom
bracket width discrepancies.
All three models retail for £60 and a
Campagnolo ultra Torque version is in the
pipeline.
Elsewhere from Praxis, retailers will find the
only forged 52-36 rings on the market at
present.

SILVERFISH
Silverfish once again proved a busy room,
whether or not that's because of its close
proximity to the lunch hall is up for debate,
but what we do know is that the DVO Emerald
fork was a must see fork many.
With inverted forks firmly out of favour for
some time, DVO claimed to have finally
cracked the stiffness issues and with the
inclusion of a carbon torsional arch. It's
certainly a beefy looking unit, with a 42mm
outer stanchion and 36 inner. The forged
magnesium dropouts are wider too and with
this combination of lightweight materials it's
not overly heavy for the size either at 4.7
pounds. Though still a prototype we're told it'll
come in roughly in line with Fox 40 pricing and
will be accompanied in August by a matching
rear shock dubbed the 'Jade'. A 160mm single
crown fork will also land around August.
Race Face had plenty going on as usual, with
the Atlas bar now in a 'Kashima' matching
shade dubbed 'Kash Money'. A collaboration
with SDG on a new 'Six' I-beam carbon post
and matching Atlas saddle was also revealed,
alongside £19.95 tacky lock on Atlas grips.
2PURE
On the back of the Chocolate Distribution
merger, this was always going to be a strong
showing from 2pure, which once again had a
separate space for Ibis bikes.
Starting with Ibis, though not in the room,
we were given a sneak peak into the new
Ripley full suspension 29er, due with 2pure in
February.
With a DW Link spec and eccentric pivots,
this is a build that's been in the pipeline for
four years now and is said to make progress on
the Mojo SL-R. Forward orders are said to be
unprecedented, so if you're looking to get a
few of these in, get your orders in now as
demand is surely set to outstrip supply. Retail
price will be 'in line with the HD', according to
2pure.
On to the much-revised components and
accessories portfolio and we're seeing the first
showing of Glacier and black Mamba gloves, as
well as lock Laces, Lightspurs and Nathan.
To sum each up for those unfamiliar, Black
Mamba are latex free, industrial strength
workshop gloves supplied in boxes of 100. Lock
Laces are 'fit and forget' shoelaces ideal for
those who need to switch shoes quickly in
sport. Lightspurs offer a variety of goods, from
light up trouser clips, through phone holders,
'Fire and Ice' bottles and hygiene products for
athletes. Glacier, meanwhile are any weather
gloves tailored to a variety of activities, from
thin, yet weather proof gloves for cyclocross
riders to thicker extreme weather gloves – all
made from Neoprene.
The Galfer brake pad brand also joins the
stable.

ISON
Few will have walked through the Ison space
without noting Identiti's brand new Initial D,
which BikeBiz is told "after 15 years focused on
dirt products, is a step forward into something
more advanced." According to sales and
marketing executive Dave Franciosy, this is the
first step in changing the face of Identiti.
The Initial D is a 3K carbon frame that
comes disc ready and weighs in at 1.5 kilo with
the fork. Expected to retail under £1,000, the
frameset will be supplied with a headset and a
complete bike will follow and will be di2 ready.
A cross frame, also in the smoked satin finish,
dubbed the Initial X is also on the way.
Perhaps even bigger news for Ison was the
arrival of a selection of Banshee Bikes with full
stock arriving early in March.
The Rune was one build on show, which
carries the KS Link by UK designer Keith Scott.
KS Link suspension features fully sealed,
oversized bearings throughout for reliability
and low maintenance.
BikeBiz was also told of another ODI link up
with Vans, following on from BMX firm Cult's
first successful link up. This time around Vans
fans will be able to get their hands round a lock
on version of the ODI made grip, likely to retail
at £21.99 and supplied with white collars with
etched on logos. An Aaron Gwin signature grip
is also on the way shortly.
Other highlights include a mix and match
headset product from Gusset at £19.99 for an

upper or a lower. This means less stock need be
carried by dealers. TSG has been busy too and
has both new styles and new technology, with
the 70s inspired 'Dawn' becoming the first fully
certified ear coverage helmet, while the Kraken
Plus has apparently developed an entirely new
way to dissipate the impact from a crash, with
a 'pin' that snaps on impact, allowing the inner
lining to rotate within the harder shell before
breaking up meaning the outer takes the
majority of the stress. Halo also introduced a
full carbon wheelset for £1,000 at retail,
weighing 1.4 kilos a pair.
HOTLINES
Spank has come up with something a little bit
special on the handlebar front, all while
managing to avoid going down the carbon
fibre route, something the label says it is
looking to avoid for the long term.
The Oozy bar was tucked away, but BikeBiz
got a sneak peak of the 720mm upgrade from
the prior 690mm version. Using a 'special alloy'
the firm has managed a 208 gram weight and
at just £80 retail, making it a great alternative
to carbon on the weight front, but at a much
lower price. Seven time butted and using a
CNC bending process, the bar is tapered in all
the right places, with thicker sections on the
clamp area, bends and ends.
Spank also debuted an Oozy wheelset,
weigh in at a very respectable 1,600 grams for
the 26-inch wheelset and 1,800 for the 29er
version. Tested on the Megavalanche and
running on triple butted spokes, the hubs are
easily adapted for various axle standards and
perhaps the best news of all, both the front
and rear wheels take the same length straight
pull spoke regardless of side of the wheel.
Gaerne is now in the semi-exclusive BOA
lacing club, introducing the EPS carbon
G.Chrono road at £259.99 and the ladies Dame
for the same price. The former comes in sizes
39 through 48 and the latter 37 through 42.
BUFF
Let the warmth be with you. Buff introduced
Star Wars licensed product at Core, so your
customer can now look like a lightweight
version of Darth Vader on your bike and for
only a pound more than a standard Buff.
No word yet on what's warmer, genuine
Wookie fur, or a printed Gore Tex Storm buff,
but the latter is now in the catalogue too,
alongside a new 'Hoodie buff, made with a
Polartec fleece and with a double merino neck
cover for £30.

AFTERSHOKZ
'Headphones at a bike show?', you might have
been thinking, but Aftershokz actually make a
lot of sense. Described as the 'civilian version'
of the military headsets used in combat to
enable soldiers to receive instructions and
remain aware of their surroundings, Aftershokz
don't actually sit inside the ear. In fact, you
place them infront of the ear on the cheek
bone, which then conducts the sound.
Particularly relevant to the cycle commuter
who previously rode with a very mototone one
earbud, two versions are currently available –
the basic model and a version that allows you
to take phone calls on the move via a remote
control and microphone setup. These retail for
£59.95 without the mic and £69.95 with and
each come with a two-year warranty. A

Ergon showing an updated line of six packs for
everything from commuting to freeride and

with stability and positioning in the saddle in
mind.
Elsewhere, Brooks has been incredibly busy
with a line of new canvas bags, the launch of
the Piccadilly bag, the B17 saddlebags and
much more.
Most eye catching of all on Brook's stand
was its Merino 1866 jersey commemorating
the founding of the firm some 147 years ago.
Brooks team modelled these at the recent
L'eroica vintage bike race.
Pro Gold lubricants had some interesting
new gear for the workshop too, with a
precision application needle for cables,
refillable from the 118ml Prolink bottle and
drums of 90 industries dual textured 'Pro

grime from bikes.
CORDEE
Still a best-seller a year on, the hype around
last year's Feed Zone cook still sees the
publisher regularly struggling to hold stock.
This year the excitement surrounded the
only book on himself ever to be endorsed by
Eddy Merckx, retailing at £42. Put together
with a heavy paper stock and containing
photos Merckx himself had never seen, this is
one for the classic race fan.
Elsewhere, Cycling Northern France, which

Hope's £60 bars will arrive in a 10,20 and
30mm rise and will be 800mm long. A nice
touch is markings on either end of the bar to
accurately space shifters and levers.
Meanwhile, dealers can currently take
advantage of a 25 per cent off trade discount
on all Hope carbon wheels.
Hope also let us in on a little known secret
– the Barnoldswick manufacturer is toying with
prototype BMX hubs, which will be 'peg
compatible'.
CITRUS LIME
Bike industry epos specialists Citrus Lime
continue to tailor their software around
retailers most intricate needs, this year showing
off custom bike building modules that allow
embedded video links in a step by step upgrade
process, among other developments.
Custom made smartphone compatibility for
its customers is now a very real thing, as the
trend for mobile shopping continues to
skyrocket. According to Citrus Lime's grant
Hadwin "sales conversions from mobiles are
going through a patch of significant
improvement as devices continue to develop."
No extra admin is required, the mobile
platform syncs with the main website.
ActSmart members now also have access to
an online finance module, with tabs placed on
high-ticket items that lead through to a
window where the customer can customise the
terms to suit their budgets.
Chicken Cyclekit

Superior
Another long-termer
from Hope
CHICKEN CYCLEKIT
Dedicating an entire room to a new bike brand,
Chicken Cyclekit used Core to gauge dealer
reaction to Czech Republic label Superior bikes
and high-end off-shoot SUP.
As its first real foray in the mountain biking
world, Superior starts them young with 20 and
24-inch kids bikes at £219.99 and £254.99,
respectively.
With a Superior team having competed on
the professional circuit for over a year now, it's
no surprise that the brand has a bit of luxury
within its line too. Full suspension rigs come in
at both £1,999 for the Recon/Monarch spec
bike and if your customer is spending some
real money, there's a £3,199 29er with Rock
Shox Sid RL forks, Magura MT4 brakes and a DT
Swiss M212 shock.
There's also a number of women's specific
builds and a carbon hardtail in the range.
Across from Superior's room, Chicken gave
outings to many of its other labels, but
the crowds largely were interested in
finding out more about the Selle Italia
ID Match program.
With the purchase of a saddle stock
of £399, retailers can now gain a free
measurement kit to perfectly define
where their customer's sit bones are
and thus pair them up with the
appropriate saddle. Point of sale units,
inclusion in advertising and test
saddles are also part of the package.
HOPE
Though not flagged up as one of
Hope's new products, the eagle eyed
would have spotted another long burn
prototype project on the downhill
demo bike by the entrance – a sixspeed cassette.
Officially, this was the launch of
new bars, grips and a press fit bottom
bracket, the latter arriving in February
and the rest trickling through in late
march and May for the bars. A ceramic
version of the press fit BB will be on
the way later this year, estimated to
retail at £120, as opposed to the
standard's £90 price tag.

PALIGAP
Here's a stat for you to chew on before we kick
off, CNP sold 1.6 million flapjacks in December
to January last year. Having just secured the
distribution rights to CNP nutrition, the Paligap
crew were in high spirits, offering plenty of
product to dealers to try out. Many, knowing of
the firm's link with Team Sky and British
Cycling, didn't need a whole load of
convincing, according to Paligap and sign ups
to packages were said to be strong.
Produced in Manchester with direct input
from the riders and Nigel Mitchell of British
Cycling. Solely for the independent store, CNP
stock is available to order now.
Elsewhere, Portland Design Works had a
few standout products, most notably its Full
Metal Fenders, perfect for anyone running 23
to 25c tyres and fed up of plastic guards. At
£60 for a front and rear package, these aren't
the cheapest, but your customer will only
need one ever and they're easy to install on
all road bikes. What's more, these are the
preferred guard of the Rapha Continental
road team, so you know they have a certain
level of quality. A cyclocross version is in the
works.
PDW also debuted what could be the only
Fat Bike fender, developed at the request of
Surly and Dave Grey – the 'godfather' of fat
bikes we're told. At 5.5-inches wide and 22.5
long it offers comprehensive coverage.
BioLogic also debuted its disc ready Jule 3
'Holy Grail' Dynamo hub at £175 for anyone
looking for a cheaper alternative to a Schmidt.

Endura’s new kit bag
POLARIS
Dealers visiting the Polaris room would have
been lead through the Venom and Vapour lines,
covering road and mountain biking respectively.
Landing with the distributor from midFebruary, the Venom line has added long sleeve
jerseys with thermastretch fabric for holding on
to any warmth and reflective detailing across
the shoulders and with detailing on the cuffs.
The new bib shorts house a branded Italian
gel pad for any customers looking for top
quality comfort. Meanwhile, new laser cut
mitts, housing mesh panels, an Amara gel pad
palm and bonded construction throughout are
added to the Venom line.
On the mountain bike front the Vapour
jacket is the highlight, designed to strike a
balance between waterproof and breathability
it’s no ‘boil in a bag’ jacket and provides
ventilation in all the right places. With a
microfleece lining and drawcord adjustment it
will keep the rider warm if the temperature
does dip.
ENDURA
Plenty of exciting developments from Endura,
so if you were considering a new clothing label
for your shop, you may now get a whole load
more.
Core provided the launch platform for the
brand’s helmets and new luggage. Starting with
the luggage, there’s two new daypacks and a
42 BIKEBIZ FEBRUARY
travel case. The travel case is a substantial unit,
perfect for the travelling athlete, with
compartments for footwear both clean and
dirty, a handy pull out change mat and
dedicated areas for laundry. What’s more, it’s a
robust unit too, with buckles protected by
neoprene covers, a thick telescope handle and
micro scooter sized wheels for easy
transportation. Expect this kit to hit shelves in
July.
On to the helmets and Endura has a simple
line of three to begin with, each in four colours
and coming with a free case while stocks last.
The road going ‘Airshell’ comes in at £89.99
and weighs 220 grams, with venting galore as
you’d expect. The off road ‘Snype’ will retail for
£69.99. Both are a in-mold construction and
carry a three step adjust bar for cradling the
rear of the head and a dial adjust. Three sizes
are to be stocked.

SADDLEBACK
Ceramic Speed make kit for anyone serious
about shaving any resistance from their ride
and CoreBike gave us insight into what they’ve
been developing. Most notably the firm now
carries press fit 4624 road cups, as well as a 30
to 24 press fit. If you’d had a roll of the test
bearings on ceramic Speed’s demo unit the
difference in drag is noticeable, though the
price is too, so these will be upgrade items for
the customer who has to have the best.
Sportique showed off a countertop unit
filled with warm up creams at £14.99 for a
180ml tube, protective Elements creams for
£16.99 and warm up oils from £9.99. It’s a £75
buy in for a unit decked out with a variety of
the above and the resell value is £180.85.
Saddleback had also added a mounting
hardware brand called Raceware, which
produces colourful mounts for GoPros, Garmins
and a variety of other devices.
Steve Peat’s Santa Cruz decked out with the
best of ENVE’s downhill kit was also on show,
with the ‘world’s first all carbon downhill
clincher’ the highlight of the decked out build.
ENVE now say their wheels corner faster than
any they’ve tested before.
E4/EBC
The electric bike market, in particular the E4
group, has made some stellar efforts in recent
months to convince dealers that now is the
time to reconsider stocking electric bikes.
We spoke to Paul Stanforth of EBC/E4 about
why 2013 was the perfect year to exhibit at
Core and he said: “There’s a brilliant quality of
dealer here. They’re all clued up to what’s
going on in the market and we will be doubling
our space at Core next year to make the most
of this opportunity. Our job in recent times has
been to demonstrate to retailers that the
technology has come on leaps and bounds, no
longer will you suffer in the workshop or with
customers returning with complex problems.
Plenty of the people we’ve seen here are open
minded to the potential of the market and
increasingly ready to do business, it’s very
encouraging.”
Within the EBC and Hero Eco shared room,
Stanforth pointed to AVE’s new Alfine eightspeed, hydraulic brake build, coming in at
£1,299 as a strong quality build at a strong
price point.
Having been the favourite in a Sunday Times
‘commuter group test’, EBC’s own UCR-S0 at
£999 is also a bike the firm is keen to get in
front of dealers.
Elsewhere Solex has a new 36v battery build
coming in at £1,399.
I-RIDE
It was
unavoidable for
many as soon as
you entered iride’s room, so
we’ll cut to the
chase.
Thompson’s
prototype
dropper post isn’t
available just yet,
though it’s
expected to come
in around the £350 when it does land. For that
figure your customer will get a custom sealed
125mm travel post in 30.9 and 31.6 diameters.
It’s cartridge based and has an easily
serviceable trigger and cable actuation, which
won’t take up acres of space on the handlebar.
Side to side play shouldn’t ever be an issue
either thanks to rubber dampers that ‘expand
with use’. As a prototype, it’s currently
weighing in at 450 grams and when asked
about 27.2 versions, we were told that a road
version is likely to hit before the thinner model
comes to fruition. This will aparently have a
‘PAVE’ function where the post provides a sight
element of suspension over cobbles and
rougher tracks.
Elsewhere, Spanish helmet label Catlike have
a new point of sale stand available to all i-ride
customers.

Momentum will ‘move everyone’
Torq sensor-toting two bike range aims to provide well specced electric bikes priced just over £1k
By Jonathon Harker
MOMENTUM MADE its UK debut at the
London Bike Show, showing off two
models on its booth and at the test track.
The bikes, the Model T and Upstart, both
retail at £1,095 and were launched at
Eurobike last summer.
The bikes are being sold online at
present, though Momentum is looking for
retailers to link with.
Singapore designer Ying-Tsao Tan
founded the brand, partnered with
Andreas Torpsch, an engineer specialising
in electric bikes.
The matt black diamond framed
Upstart uses an AUTORQmatic sensor,
taking into account the rider’s power and
adding the motor’s power accordingly. The
Model T is a more relaxed bike with an
upright riding position, wider handlebar
and SRAM Automatix two-speed hub that
shifts gear automatically.
Both the Model T and the Upstart have
a 35mile maximum range, two-year
warranty and simple control.

Cheaper Gocycle in the works
LIKE MOMENTUM, Gocycle used London
Bike Show as the UK launch pad for its
latest models after a Eurobike 2012

EZ Rider launches at ExCeL
Chelmsford company currently exploring options for its route to market
By Jonathon Harker
ALSO EXHIBITING at the London Bike
Show, new electric bike brand EZ Rider
was probably the youngest company
exhibiting at the event. At just three
months old, the firm is still looking at
the retailing and distribution options
available for its route to market.
The company behind the new brand
has years of experience in batteries,
motors and other e-mobility
paraphernalia having come from a
wheelchair manufacturing background.
The Chelmsford-based EZ Rider specs
the bikes, which are then made in the
Far East, with the entry-level model just
under the key £1k level at £995, riding
up to a still modest £1,295.
“We’re open minded
about distribution.”
EZ Riders spokesperson
Featuring brushless motors and
lithium batteries, the range currently
covers three models; front basket and
rear carrier bearing EMilli and the more
sporty models EGiga and Emega, the
latter sporting front and rear suspension,
the former front suspension only. Both
have front and rear disc brakes and
internal cable routing.
The firm told BikeBiz: “We’re open
minded about distribution and retailing
and we’re currently exploring various
routes to market.”

RALEIGH’S SHIPMENT of
Haibike is arriving from
Germany on January 31st,
including pedal assist e-bikes
from the brand.
Raleigh was named
distributor of the Haibike
range, revealed in September
last year.
The brand will be headed
up for Raleigh by new brand
champion David Notman.
Notman previously
represented Wales and Great
Britain as a middle distance
runner, recently completed
2012’s Ironman Wales.
Notman has 11 years
experience in the
sports trade having
enjoyed stints at
K-swiss, Asics
and Adidas,
among others.
Haibike’s eQ Xduro models
combine mountain biking
with the power of a Bosch
250W mid-engine. According
to Raleigh, the ‘middle
engine’ concept was based on
a development aim to creat a
completely off-road and
uphill-suitable eMTB. The
result is a mid-engine that
doesn’t overheat the drive
unit during long and hard
uphil stretches, with the
engine located in front of the
gears where it can operate at
a higher RPM. There are more
details of the middle engine
and ‘reverse angle’ concepts
from Raleigh directly on

Chimpanzee nutrition aims to
satisfy the UK’s active Ape-tite
Czech Republic-based energy brand Chimpanzee is pitched at the outdoors and active markets
By Jonathon Harker
THE ORGANIC-ingredient-boasting firm
showcased its energy drink and bars range
to the Outdoors Show and London Bike
Show attendees in January.
The natural energy bar range comes in
three flavours: raisin and walnut, dates and
chocolate and apricot. The bars use a mix
of complex carbohydrates, plus high fibre
and protein content to boost energy.
Chimpanzee’s Gunpowder energy drink
contains a formula of high molecular
weight complex carbs, ten times more
hypotonic than glucose, fortified with
sodium, potassium, magnesium and
calcium. According to the brand, the
natural ingredients provide clean and
natural performance for energy, hydration
and fast muscle recovery. No artificial
sweeteners, colours or flavours are used in
Chimpanzee foods.
The Chimpanzee range is available to
retailers via food distributor Lacka Foods.

Say goodbye to soggy maps
SplashMaps launches bespoke fabric map offering at ExCeL show
By Jonathon Harker
WE’VE HAD paper maps, virtual maps via
GPS computers and smartphones, but
now consumers can purchase maps
printed on fabric, via SplashMaps.
The company, which was showing its
wares at ExCeL’s Outdoor Show in
January, specialises in maps that are
waterproof, washable and wearable on
high performance fabrics. These
lightweight offerings don’t run out of
battery (à la GPS or smartphones) or get

The customisable offerings can cover
the exact routes or regions that the
customer wants. Standard offerings from
SplashMaps include six of Britain’s
national parks, available in April.
SplashMaps MD David Overton
explained: “We’re not just printing existing
maps on fabric, but creating totally new,
original map products that are so flexible
we can adapt them to any needs. Because
we’re combining data from Ordnance

Tenn-tative steps into triathlon
With a foot in both the cycling and outdoor markets, Tenn Outdoors is now
looking to grow its triathlon offering. Jonathon Harker quizzes PR and
marketing manager James Cornford…
When was Tenn Outdoors set up?
Tenn as a brand was born in 2007, with
the owners background in clothing and
technical fabrics, as well as several years
of sourcing and making cycling products
for other companies, the creation of their
own brand was the next logical step.
made from real coffee, but the product
that is our most consistent seller has to
be our Viper shorts and with the current
temperatures our Cold Weather Gloves.
What new products are coming up? We have been working hard to develop
the higher end of our range and will be
introducing a new road bike jersey with
meshed side panels, the triathlon range
too of course, plus women’s bib shorts to
name a few, whilst also adding improved
fine detailing across all new items.
And it serves both the outdoors and
cycle markets? Which one came first?
Cycling is our main market, but we have
always offered items such as walking
jackets, running and gym clothing. We
are currently looking at related markets
such as triathlon.
Why are you getting into tri now?
We see triathlon as rapidly expanding
market that at present doesn’t have
many options at the mid-level price
point, one of the big philosophies at Tenn
is to try and make sport more accessible
to the masses, so with that in mind we
are launching a full triathlon range at a
mid-level price point.
The triathlon range has male and
female tri suits, shorts and singlets, along
with a tri belt and elastic laces. These will
hit these shores in March.
You’re UK based – do you test product
over here? If so, does that give your
products a UK-focus? Both myself and Sam Robinson in
customer services have ridden or
competed in most disciplines and as part
of the New Product Development team
we always road test (or forest test) items
BIKEBIZ.COM
as part of the pre-production process. As
the main cyclists in the company we
have helped to shape the direction that
new products have taken over the past
year, often as a result of finding a gap
either in our range, or in the market
place, based around our experiences and
riding needs. What’s special about Tenn’s products?
We have looked at what the competition
are doing and have seen, particularly
with the triathlon range, that we can
make our own range to the same
standard or higher, using better quality
zips and our own design, but sell it at a
much lower RRP, whilst still giving the
IBDs room for a healthy margin.
What is Tenn best known for? We have received a lot of good reviews
for our Espresso Jerseys that are actually
How do you balance breathability and

RETAIL ONLY
The trade’s guide to sourcing stock, up-and-coming IBDs and the very latest products
RETAIL
COMMENT
I’M SAT here, post trade shows, wondering if the floodgates
are about to open on a monumental shift in how brands
deal with retail. More than anything, it’s the thoughts of
the frontline I’m most interested in, so please do get in
touch and share your thoughts on the future of the
distribution model.
Velocite’s announcement that it is to operate a two tier
method of passing business to dealers is an interesting one.
It’s a system symapthetic to the troubles retailers are
facing with internet competition and direct to retail brands
at present.
Unless you’re a Velocite test centre, sales are now largely
set to earn retailers a commission. No compulsory stock up
clogging the floor and reducing cash flow – if you partner
with the brand, your store can simply earn a fee for the
referral, enabling the retailer to compete on a level-ish
playing field with direct to consumer products.
I watched closely as the MET helmet label parted ways
with its last distributor. In the brief time before the firm set
“You only have to look at the success
of brands like Forme, Altura,
Madison’s clothing – the trend is
already there...”
up its own UK direct to retail warehouse, we had
distributors calling BikeBiz desperate to find out if it was
available to snap up. Turns out, like Mavic, Kona and
numerous others beforehand, MET wanted to replicate their
successful direct to retail model from mainland Europe here
and there was no changing their mind.
With distributors becoming increasingly capable of
producing quality in-house product, largely to keep prices
reasonable, combined with the difficulty in controlling the
grey import of an ever growing list of brands, are things
about to drastically change forever? You only have to look
at the success of brands like Forme, Madison’s own-label
clothing, Altura, Seventies’ Federal brand and many others
and the trend is already there.
With Madison having parted ways with Easton Bell
Sports entire portfolio, it’s surely only a matter of time
before the Madison stamp is put on a helmet, and why
not? They’ve done a great job on clothing and redeveloping
Saracen in-house.
Importing an out of house label seems to have become a
dicey business in a trade where prices are researched
heavily by the end-user – to the point where bikes are
ordered from oversees stores, rather than from the dealer
down the road.

Like with most developing markets, specialising in e-bikes has required patience in order to get the
business model right. Ray Wookey of Cycling Made Easy talks to Mark Sutton about taking his time to
educate and familiarise customers with e-bikes and how that approach is starting to pay dividends...
AS THE sole retailer in the room during the
Bicycle Association’s meeting on the electric
bike market during late November, BikeBiz was
immediately drawn to Cycling Made Easy’s
retail business.
With tried and tested opinions on how to sell
electric bikes, the room paid attention to owner
Ray Wookey each and every time he addressed
the floor.
Echoing the specialist distributor’s
suggestions that engagement with the public
was crucial to the sustained growth of the
market, Wookey explained that, though time
intensive, this is a segment where the fruits of
labour are more often realised than they
perhaps are in the sale of a traditional bicycle.
“Customers often come in to our store
clutching a bundle of papers from internet
research,” says Wookey. “They want to know
more, but understand, given the often higher
ticket price and complexity of the product, that
it’s unwise to jump into an internet purchase
without the guidance of an expert. We sit the
customer down and take time to understand
why they are curious about electric bikes. More
importantly, we will ensure they swing a leg
over, guided by us, to try and develop a better
understanding of the types of product that
are available.”
BIKEBIZ.COM
Never an impulse buy, Wookey explains that
he is frequently forwarded custom from his
supply partners, with whom he works closely.
“Our brand partners know that we’ve got the
necessary expertise, from both myself and our
technical director Mike Barnard, to answer all
the questions put to us.
“Our biggest source of custom comes from
word of mouth and we feel that having spent
the time to assist the customer in getting to
grips with the product, most will leave enthused
enough about the way an electric bike has
effected their life to share their experience with
others in their social circles.”
For this reason, Wookey says the early
adopters of the market who initially bought
sensibly are now a ‘second generation’ of buyer,
returning for the high ticket item they were
hesitant about committing to first time around.
“Those who try and understand the electric
bicycle are sold for life and as such we are
starting to see sell-through of the bikes costing
up to £3,000, particularly over the course of the
last six months.
“The bikes talk for themselves now and with
the advent of technology such as crank drives,
the bikes are becoming more and more userfriendly, allowing the fine tuning of the
assistance provided. People have said in the
“Those who try
and understand
the electric bike
are sold for life.”
Ray Wookey,
Cycling Made Easy
past electric bikes are ‘cheating’, but that’s not
my feeling. Electric bikes are no longer seen as
the ‘one foot in the grave’ option for cycling,
they are a sensible method to kick start your
cycling experience again, as well as to maintain
and eventually improve fitness in comfort.”
Cycling Made Easy’s methods appear to be
paying off too, with turnover having doubled on
2011 levels last year and with Wookey holding
the belief that this is perhaps just the beginning
for the business, which is now entering its third
year of trading.
“We’re not far off moving into our new
showroom, a 2,000 square foot unit on the
High Street. What’s more, we’ve moved into the
distribution of the EcoBike label, which this year
we will be interested in developing in the UK.
It’s already our best selling label, much thanks
to its value for money and we’d like to hear
from other retailers who we in turn could help
out during their first steps into the power
assisted world.
“For those yet to make a decision on
whether an e-bike is right for them, we’re also
hosting monthly bike rides, which are already
popular with existing customers and provide
new users with a great opportunity to try a bike
on realistic and varied terrain.”

FOLDING BIKES
Commuter central…
Let’s face it, folding bikes might be good for different styles of riding, but in commuting they
come into their own. So if your shop is near where people live or work (there’s a fair chance…)
then a folding bike is worth considering. Jonathon Harker lists some options…
Airnimal
THE AIRNIMAL Joey is a folding bike
designed and assembled in Britain.
Pitched as a high performing all-rounder,
from sports to commuter and touring,
the Joey works well with two wheel
sizes – fat profile (24-inch ISO-507) for
the city or trail, or narrow profile (24inch ISO -520) high pressure for speed.
All Airnimals are fitted with high quality
standard components, BikeBiz is told, so
dealers or customers can upgrade easily.
The Joey has two levels of fold, with
the first taking about 30 seconds and
with the addition of the Commuter kit
(except for some bar configurations) will
leave you with a contained package that
can either be picked up with one hand, or
wheeled. There is also the Joey bag,
specifically designed to fit this fold. The
second level of fold takes a few minutes,
depending on the accessories fitted, and
gets the bike small enough to fit into
Airnimal’s dedicated Traveller case.
The Airnimal Joey models starts
from £999 RRP. Find out more from

Bigfish
IN 2013 Big Fish will be introducing a
new suite of next generation Bigfish
bikes. Having launched the first
generation some years ago, and after a
hefty R&D investment, it is bringing out
an entirely new range of bikes with
improved folding mechanism, better
components and a plusher finish.
Central to both new models is the
simplicity of the fold. Operated by
buttons, this is a unique patented
folding system, designed to be intuitive,
and with no right or wrong order for
the folding process. The folded Bigfish
can also be rolled upright when folded,
making it easy to navigate crowded
areas where you can't ride the bike, for
example railway platforms. It's also a
very slim folded package that makes
storage easy.
The Bigfish Line is stylish spin on the
brand, while the Wave is a re-energised
version of the Bigfish design. There’s

ONE OF the best known
operators in the sector,
Brompton’s UK-made line of
folding bikes uses a compact,
practical fold which, with a little

Every bike is, of

invisible on the roads, especially when
riding at night. With this in mind,
Design Headwear’s cycle helmet

addition of a bright, built-in LED light

WIT Industries Fendor Bendor
Seeking UK distributor: +31(0)614432645
THE FENDOR-BENDOR 3 is, like its predecessor,
designed and produced in the Netherlands and made
from 100 per cent recycled and recyclable plastics.
Unlike others on the market, this simple design is
supplied in a simple-to-bend-into-shape unit, that
when not in use folds into thirds and stashes away in a
bag pocket nicely. A Velcro strap attaches to the seat
tube of your bike, while pre-punched cut outs allow
for easy adjustment around brake calipers if needed.
The 60-gram guard is compatible with road,
singlespeed and mountain bikes. The only catch is the
guard will not work on monostay frames.

Dogcam Sport: 01208 269 159
Madison: 0208 385 3385
Buffera: 01707 852244
WITH PLANS to bring on board more retail partners
in 2013, Dogcam sport have developed a cycling
camera with an in-built ‘black box recorder’ and a
system which loops the footage to ensure only the
freshest action is stored, making it ideal for
commuters wary of undesirable encounters on
the road.
Claiming to be the only UK-designed and
insurance-approved cameras, the Roadhawk product
weighs only 32 grams and will record up to eight
hours onto its 32GB card. A single charge of the
li-polymer battery will provide 90 minutes of
continuous recording at 30 frames per second
(in 720p).
Currently the cameras are available from Evans
Cycles, though RoadHawk are looking for
independent retail stockists across the UK and all
sales enquiries should be directed to RoadHawk sales
manager Ed Mayne.
THE EDGE 810 and 510 are Garmin’s first dedicated
cycling devices with real-time connectivity and
combine the most popular aspects of the Edge
800/500, while adding advanced connected features
through a smartphone (Apple or Android).
The new user-friendly interface, along with live
tracking, social media sharing and real-time weather
updates make them perfect for training and touring.
The 810 features a sleek 2.6-inch colour display,
up to 17-hours of battery life, and a newly
redesigned and simplified touchscreen interface. The
810 is also compatible with detailed street or TOPO
maps, including BirdsEye Satellite Imagery.
The 510 is a compact option, weighing just 90
grams and boasting a new 2.2-inch sunlight readable
touchscreen display. The Edge 510 is rugged,
waterproof and has up to a 20-hour battery life. The
touchscreen is easy to operate, even with a gloved
finger and when wet.
SUEME HAS launched a ladies version of the ‘Tree
Trunks’ underwear, the Beech Shorties.
Supplied in the same recycled cardboard
packaging, the ladies versions span sizes extra small
through large and will retail for the same price as the
men’s product.
Of particular interest to the retail will be the ‘Tree’
point of sale unit, available free with trade orders
and designed to hold 20 pairs of trunks on a single
sided unit, or 40 on a double.
The product itself is manufactured from beech
tree pulp, which is super soft, comfortable and fast
drying, as well as naturally anti-bacterial. Five per
cent lycra construction means the garment will hold
its shape and add support where needed.
The SueMe slogan “What goes around comes
around” is knitted into in a contrasting colour into
the waistband.

ATB SALES has just taken delivery of an in-house
designed Whyte carbon 29er wheelset, that is both
Maxle and Shimano E-thru axle compatible.
Rolling on cartridge bearing hubs, laced to a high
modulus UD rim with 1K outer ply, Whyte decided to
pursue the production of its own larger wheelset
feeling that most complete 29er bikes are let down
in spec largely by the wheels. The High Modulus, fine
mesh rims are resistant to high impact stone chips
that can cause surface cracks – Whyte says the final
layer acts as a 'blast skin'.
The wheels are a 28 hole front and 32 Hole rear
three Cross spoke build.
DT Swiss Competition Double spokes with alloy
nipples finish the package, which will retail for £999
for the XT skewer set, while the standard set will
come in at £949. Whyte Nylon rim strip designed
specifically for these rims are included.
SIR PAUL Smith has revealed the four jerseys he has
designed for this year's Giro d'Italia.
The fashion designer and cycle enthusiast got
involved after an informal meeting with race
organiser RCS Sport during the 2011 Giro.
Sir Smith explained: “Having been a huge cycling
enthusiast and follower of the major tours and
classics for many years, it’s an absolute privilege to
be asked to design the four jerseys for the Giro
d’Italia. I hope that the simple approach that I’ve
made is acceptable to all; putting red piping with the
pink, cleaning all of the jerseys up to keep them as
simple as possible.”
Each Giro d’Italia official jersey, produced for the
17th consecutive year by Santini, bears a little
drawing of a cyclist by Smith and his iconic stripes
on the left sleeves. The inside of the collar of the
Maglia Rosa also bears the signature of the late
Fiorenzo Magni as a tribute to the three times Giro
winner who died last year.
THE SPAERO pump has been grabbing plaudits with
an iF product design prize and a Taipei Cycle d&i
award. In both competitions, the new ‘hose pump’
was able to win through with its simple, elegant
design combined with ingenious technology and high
pump power. The dust cover hides a pull-out hose
that guarantees a tight fit when pumping on all
types of valves thanks to a screw-on duo head. It is
available in two versions: as Spaero Alu with an
aluminium tube and as Spaero Deep Black with a
tube made of matt plastic. SKS is distributed via Chicken Cyclekit (01525
381347), Madison (01908 326000) and
Raleigh (01773 532600).

It’s time to change
the Driving Test
One reader gets
behind a petition
that will call for a
cycle awareness
aspect to the
driving test, and
urges others to do
the same…
“If drivers are not
trained to be aware
of cyclists then they
will retain their lack
of awareness.”
Dear BikeBiz
THERE IS an online petition calling for cycle
awareness to be made part of the driving test.
The petition statement reads: “Whilst the
driving theory test has some optional cycling
awareness questions, not everyone is tested
with these and the practical driving test does
not have any particular focus on cyclists. If
drivers are not trained to be aware of cyclists
and how to drive around them they will retain
the lack of awareness after they pass their test.
British Cycling supports the motoring
organisations which are calling for harder tests
and the inclusion of cycle awareness in the test.
“British Cycling’s manifesto says that
changes should be made to the driving test to
make cycle awareness a core part of driver
training and testing with emphasis on how
much space to give cyclists and how to safely
overtake cyclists.
“We need to make this happen and stop
people being needlessly killed on the roads.”
The petition has gained more than 10,000
signatures since it was launched earlier this
month, but needs another 90,000 if it is to
stand a chance of being debated in the House
of Commons.
You can find the petition here:

Please sign up and forward to others to
help make the debate possible.

72 BIKEBIZ FEBRUARY
brand (Nike) a few months ago to
manufacture fluo colour bottles, fluo
colours were all the rage in the ‘80s we
seem to remember. At first, we were a
little reluctant but after running
samples we all changed our minds and
a decision was made to introduce fluo
colours into the range. We’ve already
produced fluo bottles for cycle trade
clients in 2012 and hope that in 2013
we’ll produce a lot more.
How long has BottleSport been in
the bike trade?
BottleSport originally started
manufacturing and selling bike bottles
into the bike trade over 15 years ago. At
that time we only had one size and
shape of bottle (500ml). The success of
this initial product was the start of
something much larger as we later
found out when we introduced bottles
that were bigger and in different shapes.
How’s business?
Business has grown year-on-year for
over ten years, so can’t complain. More
recently we’ve found that UK buyers
prefer to deal with us as what we sell is
a UK-made quality product, small
orders are not an issue and not having
to wait for eight to ten weeks for your
bottles to arrive from Europe or China
is reassuring. We can still genuinely
state ‘Made in the UK’.
What are the most popular designs?
For the cycle trade 500ml and 750ml
size bottles are our most popular. Wide
neck bottles also seem to be much
more in demand now as they are easier
to clean and when energy powders are
used they are far easier to fill.
Tell us about the new flouro models:
We were asked by a major US sports
What are lead times like?
All our products are UK-moulded and
printed at our factory in Watford,
Hertfordshire. Normally, any custom
printed order takes no longer than two
to three weeks. We are also able to
offer an express service where orders
can be turned around in seven to ten
days at no extra cost.
Are there minimum quantities?
With 500ml and 750ml bike bottles we
can produce orders as small as 50
pieces, although its not very often we
sell orders of this size. In general, we
find the average order size to the cycle
trade is 300 to 500 pieces.
And there is a deal available now?
We’re offering an early buy deal until
the end of Feb 2013 with a ten per
cent discount. We may extend the
offer, depending on its success.
How should dealers get in touch?
Email is normally the best way, but the
old-fashioned telephone works also.
Got a final thought for our readers?
Many of the UK cycle trade clients we
deal with don’t have artwork or designs
and as part of our service we’re able to
construct a visual or even completely redraw client’s logos. Our job is to print
client’s logos and brand names onto bike
bottles and we take the design services
we offer very seriously.

You’re throwing yourself behind a new cycling festival...
The Orbital Cycling Festival – www.orbitalfestival.com – is
over the weekend of July 26th to 28th – the weekend after
the Tour de France. It’s going to be at the iconic Goodwood
Motor Circuit and will focus on road and track racing with lots
for families and kids to do. And there’ll be camping for all.
Having worked on Bike Blenheim Palace, we wanted to deliver
an event with a much closer link between rider participation
and the trade expo. Our focus at Orbital is all about visitor
containment and engagement. Hosting events where riders
disappear for five or six hours is not the most compelling for
exhibitors. Initial reaction to Orbital has been fantastic.
£1,395,000 (exc VAT)
We don’t have official stats on how many Bike Show visitors wandered over
to the Boat Show, but BikeBiz couldn’t resist. Trouble is, we’ve now set our
hearts on this offering from Sunseeker available for £1,395,000 plus VAT.
How can exhibitors interested in being there get in touch?
Easy, drop me an email to [email protected] or give a call on
07920 008824. Have a look at the Exhibitor Pack on –
http://orbitalfestival.com/orbital-cycling-festival-exhibitors/ –
and let me know how we can help. We’ll do all that we can to
deliver a solution for all exhibitors, irrespective of size.
What bikes do you own?
I’ve got a Cannondale Jekyll which I ride on the South Downs
and an ‘80s rigid fork Cinelli MTB I use to hack around the city.
My waistline is telling me to pick up a road bike, so I’ll be getting
one soon. Favourite places? Anywhere with a lovely view around
the next corner and I enjoy riding fast around the city, or
plodding along the Brighton seafront in the summer.
What’s the biggest rush achievable on a bike?
Downhill and out of control – road or trail.
What can Bikesoup do for the bicycle retailer?
Bikesoup can give the bicycle retailer a significant lift in web
search traffic and motivated buyers that comes to the shop.
We don’t take commissions and we don’t manage sales – my
feeling is that bike buying is something best done in person,
guided by an expert. Retailers also benefit from better local
consumer visibility and dealers have always commented that
Bikesoup listings bring new customers through the door. Our
strongest hand at the moment is to new shops (or dealers
without a website) and those will benefit most from a good
online push from Bikesoup at very little cost. Dressed to the 9s
If clothing was your thing, then the LBS
had plenty to offer, from Madison’s
extensive clothing lines, AnaNichoola’s
Hello Yello jacket (below right) and the
latest from chic Chapaeu.
Tell us about your role at Bikesoup:
I gave myself the informal role of chief spoke at Bikesoup and
like anybody running a small business I get involved in all of
the decisions about how we will develop. Our challenge for
2013 is turning Bikesoup into a marketplace that IBDs can’t
afford not to have their bikes listed on. To date our product
hasn’t been compelling enough to fully engage with time poor
bike dealers – that situation will change in 2013 as we release
new software with better functionality and integration.

LATELY IT does seem like there’s been a rash of cycling charity fundraisers, but it turns
out that’s because cycling has beaten running firmly into second place when it comes
to preferred activity for raising charity cash. One such fundraiser was the HotChileebacked London-Paris 2012, which saw fundraisers make £260,493.82 for worthy
causes. David Casterton of ICAP raised a whopping £35k of that and has won free
entry to London-Paris 2013 – a special year for HotChillee as it’s the event’s tenth
anniversary – for his amazing effort.

“I don’t know [if] I have a great answer.
This is too late, probably for most
people and that’s my fault. I view this
situation as one big lie that I repeated a
lot of times. It’s not as if I said ‘no’ and
moved off it. While I’ve lived through
this process, I know the truth. The truth
isn’t what I said and now it’s gone.
“This story was perfect for so long.
You overcome this disease [testicular

perfect marriage, children. It’s this
mythic, perfect story and it wasn’t true.
I am a flawed character.
“All the fault and blame is on me and
a lot of that is momentum and I lost
myself in all that. I couldn’t handle it.
The story is so bad and toxic and a lot
of it is true..”
Lance Armstrong, finally, admits
doping, speaking to Oprah Winfrey in a
TV interview, January 17th.
ROB SINCLAIR, Thule sales agent for Scotland, picked up Thule’s award
for Salesman of the Year Award’ for 2012. Sinclair (pictured right) was
presented with the award by UK area sales manager Neil Sellers (left) for
exceeding sales targets and successfully opened new accounts in spite of
the tough economic climate. Sellers said: “2012 was a hugely successful
year for sales yet Rob in particular never failed to miss a Head Office
deadline and his increase in turnover speaks for itself.” Sounds like the

“I can still remember going toe to toe
with him and watching the man I saw
on the top of Verbier in 2009 to the
man I saw on the top of Ventoux a
week later when we were in doping
control together. It wasn’t the same bike
rider.”
Wiggins went on to pour scorn on
Armstrong’s claim that he rode clean in
2009/2010 when Wiggins was denied a
podium finish by the American, in the
Daily Telegraph, January 24th.
“It’s a credit to Norman Baker that he is
securing this increased funding for
cycling infrastructure but what we need
is long-term, sustained investment and
a strategy to put cycling at the heart of
transport policy.
"The total funding package works out
at less than £1 pound per head of the
population per year. The Dutch spend
£25 pounds per head per year, and have
been doing so for decades. We need to
match that level of funding to get
Britain cycling.”
Martin Gibbs, British Cycling’s
director for policy and legal affairs,
gives his view on Norman Baker’s
announcement of the ‘biggest
investment in cycling ever’ – or £62m –
for improving road safety for cyclists,
January 30th.

SPOKES
Of bike booms and bike paths
Carlton Reid looks back at the history of cycle
infrastructure provision in the UK and wonders whether
the Get Britain Cycling inquiry will lead to action
APPARENTLY – but only if you ignore the dire summer of
las year – we’re in the middle of a bike boom. No doubt
the report for the ‘Get Britain Cycling’ parliamentary
inquiry will mention this boom (it ought to, I submitted
the stats…) and the cyclists of this sceptre’d isle will
be lavished with bicycle infrastructure to keep the
boom going.
Sadly, politics doesn’t work like that. Or, at least not for
cyclists. Between the years of 1928 and 1938 the number
of cyclists in the UK doubled from 5,343,000 to
10,123,000. Now, *that* was a boom. What did the UK
Government do for cyclists during that boom? Diddly
squat, unless you count 95 miles of crap cycle lanes
beside the newly-minted trunk roads of the day. In the
1950s there was another boom: a petrol-powered one.
Billions got spent on motorists. Motorists – despite still
being a minority on the roads – were well used to being
feather-bedded. In the 1930s the motor industry had been
especially cosseted because it was expected that car
production would be shifted to military vehicle
production; bicycle factories, such as the Raleigh plant,
were also converted for armaments production but
Sturmey Archer gears couldn’t power tanks.
H.R. Watling, director of the British Cycle and Motorcycle Manufacturers and Traders Union, told a
parliamentary committee in 1938 that the UK made two
million bicycles each year and that there were 15 million
bicycles in use. (This trade organisation later split in two,
although shared the same building in Coventry; the
bicycle half of the organisation is now what is known as
the Bicycle Association).
The peers on the parliamentary committee asked
Watling for his views on ‘cycle tracks’, i.e. bike paths.
“I have no objections to the principle of cycle tracks.
We have every objection to the cycle track as at present
produced…the provision of a cycle track is, at best, a
palliative…The cycle track to-day is of very little value
because it is poorly constructed; there is only a small
mileage of it, and furthermore, although it is provided for
the cyclist yet the track is actually used by various other
people, such as perambulators, pedestrians and the like. In
other words the cycle track to-day is not sufficiently
inviting or sufficiently well constructed to induce the
cyclist to use it.”
He could have been speaking at the current inquiry, not
a lot has changed.
So, today, what *will* Get Britain Cycling?
Presumed liability won’t Get Britain Cycling. Cycle
training won’t Get Britain Cycling. Separated cycle tracks
won’t Get Britain Cycling. Subjective safety won’t Get
Britain Cycling. Health messages won’t Get Britain Cycling.
Better cycle security won’t Get Britain Cycling. Selling
more bikes won’t Get Britain Cycling. ‘Go Dutch’
campaigns won’t Get Britain Cycling. 20mph zones won’t
Get Britain Cycling. Taming cars won’t Get Britain Cycling.
High-level political support for cycling won’t Get Britain
Cycling. Millions more cash for cycling won’t Get Britain
Cycling either.
That is, not on their own. It’s a mix of all of the above,
and more. Much more. There’s no simple solution. It’s not
just about infrastructure. If it were, Stevenage would be a
hot-bed of cycling in the UK. It’s not just about looking at
what’s been done in New York, Groningen, Seville,
Copenhagen and Chicago. We need to learn from those
cities, for sure, but there’s no one-size-fits-all template
that works for all cities. And cycling isn’t just about cities.
We also need to tame the car in the countryside, too.
None of this will be easy, we’re up against more than 100
years of planning for the car. And, let’s face it, the
majority of people – including lots who read this
magazine – are glad there’s been this 100 years of
planning for the car. People may not be happy to be stuck
in their cars but even when given a gold-plated
alternative, they may not use it. Inertia is like that.
I gave evidence to ‘Get Britain Cycling’. The evidence I
gave has been said, by others, many times before. The
evidence others gave has been said many times before.
Really, there’s nothing new under the sun. Thing is, words
are easy to say, it’s action that counts. Finally, will we get
this action?

Zipp’s new 202 Firecrest® Carbon Clincher revolutionizes what’s
possible with a do-it-all classic road wheel. We took our 202
wheelset – the venerable climber’s companion – and transformed it
into a stiff, lightweight and aerodynamic speed weapon.
Our proprietary Firecrest rim rewrote the fundamentals of wheel
making, resulting in improved aerodynamics and stability in even
the strongest of crosswinds. Our Carbon Clincher technology
provides convenience with optimized ride quality and braking.
It’s a road classic, revolutionized.
