What Is Archive Creator?

Archive Creator (AC) is a Windows based program that is designed to simplify the task of archiving
groups of files to CD and DVD Recordable media as well as ISO 9660 images and other mounted
media (such as a removable drive). Its design is such that when such a group of files (the Archive
Set) is too big to fit onto 1 disc (CD or DVD) it will automatically span the Archive Set across multiple
discs thereby maximizing the disk storage potential of the media, while minimizing the time required

4
to organize the files in an efficient manner. While its design is generic in nature, the primary target
market for AC is the digital photography market based on the fact that the serious digital
photographer generates large amounts of large image files of large size. The ability to easily archive
their "digital negatives" and processed work is critical.
In addition, during the archive process, Archive Creator is able to make an HTML "Web Style" Index
of the image files within the Archive Set. This Index of the entire Archive Set is written onto each of
the discs in the Archive Set. This is extremely powerful as you can then view the thumbnails and
viewing images from the entire Archive Set from any one of the CDs or DVDs. This means that later
if you are looking for an image, you can insert any of the discs from the Archive Set and find the
image that you are looking for without having to shuffle through multiple discs, until the time you
actually find the desired photo file and wish to copy it to your HD or open it in an application (and
then only if it is not on the CD/DVD that you are viewing).

Archive Creator
Alternately you can choose other options for the HTML Index to be written on just the first or last
disc, with or without data.
*** html index can be used independently
This HTML Index also does not require any special software to be on the computer except for
Internet Explorer (and we are also compatible with most versions of Netscape, Opera, Mozilla, etc.,
with some exceptions). We use no Java or JS coding, just pure HTML, so that no special software is
required on the viewing computer. And the Index is even created from most RAW file types, as well
(Nikon NEFS, Canon CRW and 1D/1DS TIFs, and many others as well). Jump to:
Supported File Types
Jump to: The Archive Set CDs
Note: Archive Creator Version 2.0 and beyond is compatible with CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and
DVD+R/RW. To make this discussion simpler, we will sometimes discuss the target media as
being CD, and the examples used will be from the photographic perspective. But 2 things
should be understood …
1 – In almost every place where "CD" is mentioned, "DVD" can be assumed as well.
2 – AC can archive any type of file, and it is not limited to photographic usage either from a technical
or application basis. ALL files except certain system files may be archived using AC.
Having said this, we will proceed using the photography examples and the burning of CDs in our
discussion.

Why is AC Useful?

·
AC is so simple to use that you will actually archive your files on a regular basis, which in the
end is the most critical aspect of the program. We want you to archive your files.
AC can archive any file type, not just Photo Files!
AC automatically spans your Archive Set across multiple CDs (or DVDs)
AC can create ISO 9660 image file for use with other burning software or as an additional
archive type
AC can archive to any mounted file system (removable media, network mounted drive etc)
AC automatically can create an HTML Web-Style Gallery that is written to each of the CDs in
the Archive Set (or just the first or last)
AC Can be scheduled to allow automated archival at pre-selected times
AC Can help managing you archive projects by allowing separate workspaces, each containing
archive projects for different Customers, Jobs, Archive types or what ever else you may need.
AC Can automatically take the archive process from file selection directly through the burning
and verification of your first disc..or through the entire process of archiving to folders or ISO
images.
AC creates the HTML Index even from most RAW image files automatically with no conversion
software required.(Canon, Nikon and others). Click here for a list of supported image file types.
The Archive Set CDs each have the entire Archive Set HTML Index on them (if you choose this
option). So you can view and find a file even if it is not on the CD you have in the drive. In other
words, if the Archive Set is made up of 4 CDs, and you are later viewing CD#2, you can view
the images from all 4 CDs, right from CD#2!
You can preview images during the selection process by clicking no them...even most RAW file
types.
Simple 3 Step operation...Select Files, Process Files, Burn CDs.
Here is the process in a nutshell...
Setup
Select files, set options and name Archive Set (shown here instantly previewing an image, as well)
Process

Archive Creator
Archive Creator instantly spans the Archive Set into a multi CD Archive (if needed) and creates an
HTML "Web Style" Index with thumbnails and viewing images (if selected).
As each image is processed it is displayed in the preview window. Also the tree of each CD can be
expanded and viewed (not shown here) , even while the processing is going on.
Burn
Just insert a blank CD-R and click on Write Disks to begin the burn process. Each disk is burned and
verified and you are notified when a new CD-R is needed.
If your drive uses Burn-Proof Technology, you can do the burn in the background while you use your
computer for other non-processor intensive tasks, such as searching the Web or reviewing email (or
writing a Help System for a new product, like I am doing now).

What Problems Does AC Solve
To answer this question we will use the example of a photographic project. It could be..
· a wedding photographer coming back from a wedding shoot
· a sports photographer coming back from a game
· a street photographer from an afternoon in NYC (that's me)
· a photographer returning from a week long family vacation (that's not me)
· 6 months of shooting of a less avid photographer.
In each case it is possible that gigabytes of data will need to be archived.
This generates 3 questions that really need to be asked, and their answers are the reason of why
Archive Creator exists.
1 – How can I quickly Archive this project to multiple CDs and include a viewing index?
The current answer (before AC) is that it cannot be done quickly. So you resort to the method that is
now common and many of us have struggled with for quite some time (which is why AC was
conceived).A standard CD burning program is used to archive the large amount of files. The process
goes something like this…
· a bunch of files are dragged into the burning list
· You check to see if the CD is full enough

You drag some out
You drag some more out
You add some more back in
You drag some out
Perfect!!!!
You burn the CD
You come back 10 minutes later
You repeat the procedure for as many disks as it takes
2 – How can I be sure that the data on the CD/DVD has integrity?
The current answer is for the most part you can't. Most of the commonly used CD burning programs do
not check the total integrity of the data. They just report if a burning error has occurred. This will not
ensure the integrity of the data. Some programs have verify options but they are generally hidden and
are not turned on (although they should be) and some do not offer the option at all.
3 – How can I find a specific picture should I need to reference the archive?. How will I know
which disk it is on?
The current answer is that you put in CD by CD until you find the picture that you want, or print some
kind of catalog, or database the CDs in a program like Thumbs Plus. All acceptable solutions if you
have the time and energy and a system to do it. Or you make a separate "Web Gallery" (an HTML
picture index) and include it within your burn to CD. But you either have to make a separate gallery for
each CD (which you can't do until you know which files will go onto each CD). Or if you make 1 large
Gallery, there is no way to know which files are on which CDs as you look at the Index. And if you are
working with RAW files, you will have to convert the RAW files to a standard format before you begin.
Now let's answer these same questions using Archive Creator.
1 – How can I quickly Archive this project to multiple disks?
Select the folder, folders or files that you want to Archive by selecting them in the File Selection Tree.
Hit the Process button and the files will be spanned on the screen across as many CDs as are needed.
If you like what you see (you can examine the contents that each CD will have), just begin burning.
That's it…3 steps…select, process and burn. And along the way you can look at a preview of any
Image, even most RAW files!
Jump to the Quick Start Guide
jump to the Detailed Operation Guide
2 – How can I be sure that the data on the CD has integrity?
AC has 4 verify options. When set to Full (the default), as part of the burning process AC does a quick
verify that checks that each file exists and is the correct size, it then proceeds to do a byte-for-byte full
verify process that compares the file on the CD against each byte of the source file on the hard drive.
This ensures 100% integrity. If either test fails, the disk can be re-burned. In addition to these Quick
and Full verify options, there is a "Medium" option that just ensures that every byte on the CD can be
read, but does not compare it to the source data. A less secure form of verification, but faster than the
full verify and better than none. Also, for speed, you can select the "No Verify" option and verify the
disks later on the dedicated Verify page.
3 – How can I find the picture that I need should I need to reference the archive? How will I

10
know which disk it is on?
AC can generate an HTML index of the entire project that is written onto each of the CDs. So that from
any one of the CDs in the Archive Set, the entire Archive Set can be viewed and the proper file found
regardless of which disk it is on. And this index may be built using..
·
just file names
·
the file names plus thumbnails of the images
·
the filenames plus thumbnails plus viewing images (down-sampled versions of the
original source file)
·
The HTML Index is even created if the source files are Canon or Nikon RAW files (and
several other RAW types). No need for conversion.
This index is written in pure and generic HTML and is designed to be read by any IE compatible
browser (and Netscape is supported wherever possible). No other software is needed to read the
images from an AC generated Archive CD…not even AC!
Jump to The Archived CDs
Of course, the above is a simplified description of what AC can do. In reality there are many options in
the process that can further tailor its use for your needs.
1.1.4
AC vs Other Programs
CD Burning Programs
Traditionally CDs are burned using CD Burning Programs. These programs are generally designed to
be burn single CDs.
Their job is to create a CD.
CD Burning software can meet only some of the needs of creating an Archive set. If the Archive set is
larger than the target media than the CD Burning software is cumbersome and time consuming. And it
has the ability to rename files and folders which goes against the concepts of an Archive.
Backup Programs
Backup programs are designed to take large amounts of data and copy them to an offline media (could
be CD or tape or a HD), taking up the least amount of data possible. Generally the files are
compressed and must be "reconstructed" by the specific backup program. Spanning of media is
sometime supported, but it could end up that a specific file has been stored across disks or media, and
in general the entire backup "set" must be available in order to retrieve a specific file.
It's job is to copy files in a way that they can be reconstructed at some later time should a catastrophic
failure occur. It is accepted that the application software must be available, and as such this is not a
good choice for long term Archive purposes.
Archive Creator
Archive Creator is not a CD/DVD Burning program or a Backup Program. It is an Archive program that
happens to burn to CDs (and DVDs) as well as generate ISO9660 files and archive to mounted drives
as well.
It's job is to create an Archive Set.
An Archive Set is defined as a group of related files that may or may not be grouped within specific
folders. It is the desire that these files be "archived" to a long term media without "touching" or
modifying the source files in any way. They are to stay Virgin, and they are not to be renamed or
modified in any way* (with the exception of the date stamp in some cases ). The Archive Set must be
able to be "retrieved" later in a manner that a file or group of files can be found and copied back to an
online Hard Drive or other media without the need for any specific application software. The finding of
the files is important, and the ability to view the files later upon retrieval, without application specific
software, is desirable. It is also critical that each piece of media be able to work independently, so that

11
Archive Creator
if a specific piece of media is lost or damaged, that the rest of the Archive Set remains in tact. Also the
entire Archive Set should be able to be viewed with only 1 piece of media available. Archive Creator
meets all of these criteria.
Archive Creator allows you to quickly specify and label an Archive Set and with almost no user
intervention (except for the insertion of the CDs). It is basically an unattended batch process where the
Archive Set is specified and then Archive Creator does the rest. Standard Burning software cannot do
this.
*Note: In some cases based on the rules of writing CDs, the filename is changed slightly to conform to
Joliet and other naming standards. This is required by any program that writes to CDs. AC will warn
you if a name change is going to take place.
Also note that Archive Creator is not designed to archive "System" files.

1.2.2
Archive Creator
Setup
1 - Select whatever files and/or folders you would like to include in the Archive Set. You can select
any amount of files or folders and you may select across drives. This selection of files is known as
an FSL (File Selection List) and represents the files that will archived to the Media. You may filter
the list by file extension using the Archive File Filter, by date and time or by archive bit (to select
only those files that have not already been archived ***)..
Note: You can click on any filename to preview the image. (Most image types are supported. Jump
to: Supported Image Types)
2 - Decide if you would like an HTML index of the entire Archive Set burned to each archive media,
or select it to be burned to just the first or last CD/DVD or to a separate CD/DVD. This index can
contain just filenames, thumbnail images, or thumbnails and preview images. You can set the specs
for the thumbnail and preview images. The bigger and higher quality they are the more space that
they will take up. You can also filter image types to be included or excluded from the index using the
Index File Filter. (This is a separate filter from the Archive File Filter).
3 - Select the target type of the archive. The archive can be created to reside on CDs, DVDs, or to
another mounted hard disk on you system. Alternately, when archiving to CD or DVD Archive
Creator can generate ISO-9660 Image files of each CD/DVD. (ISO-9660 Image files are basically
exact image copies of the contents of a CD or DVD and can be used by most other burning
programs to burn directly to the media).
4 - Fill in the appropriate names and data that will show up in the index. Also enter the Archive Set
Name that will become the Windows CD Volume name that will show up in the file system when you
mount the CD later in Windows. You can also select how you would like the Media to be named and

numbered, with each set starting with its own numbering sequence or it can continue from a
previous sequence.

Process
1 - Hitting the Process button will bring you to the Process Page. If the "Auto-Process" option is set
in the preferences, the processing will automatically begin, if not, hit the Begin Processing button.
If you have selected Manual Selection of Lowest Common Folder, you will see a dialog that allows
you to select a specific path within the common folder path on a drive by drive basis. If you have
selected automatic Lowest Common Folder selection, or have it turned off you will not see this
dialog box.
2 - Processing will begin and will go through several passes. Depending on your PC speed, the FSL
size and your choice of HTML index parameters, this could take anywhere from a minute or 2 to an
hour. The majority of the time is required to generate the index thumbnails and viewing images.
Feedback is presented in the Progress Light display on the right hand side of the Page so you will
know what stage the processing is in. The processing is complete when the Status bar says
"competed" and the Progress Lights are all dark.
A this time you can review the HTML index via the View HTML Index button, if you have created an
Index for this Archive Set.
3 - During the processing you can examine the Layout Tree to confirm what will be burned to each
CD (or DVD).

15
Archive Creator
Note: You can click on any filename to preview an image (although during image processing it will
be over written by the images being processed).
4 - If you want to make changes, you can go back to the Setup page and do the processing again,
and any of the images that were generated from the last process phase will be reused if they can
be. This allows you to make changes to the Archive Set (add or delete files, or change the name,
for example) and not have to re-do the entire process phase again. The Index still needs to be rebuilt but this takes much less time than generating the images. Of course if you make a change to
any of the image specs (size or no drop shadow, for example) then those images that you have
changed the specs for will have to be reprocessed.
Jump to Detailed Operation - Process
1.2.4
Archive
1 - Select the archive target. The target can be a folder on a mounted hard drive, CD, DVD or ISO9660 image. For each archive target, there are a set of options you may select. For CD or DVD
burning, Select the CD Burner and options from the drop down list. Set the burn speed and turn on
Burn-Proof if it is available. If you have multiple burners attached to your PC you can load them all
with media, enable the Multi Drive Sequential burn option and AC will burn using all your drives
sequentially for unattended operation. For folder archive, you will need to select the folder to
archive into. For ISO-9660 file archives you will need to select the folder to create the ISO images
in.
2 - Load a Blank media if appropriate, and press the Archive button. You will be prompted to load

new media as necessary.
3 - You can change the Verify Level at any point and the selected verify level will be used at the
time that each archive is verified. So you can verify the first archive and not the rest (for example).
You can also verify the archives after the burn using the Verify Page.
That's it.
4 - If you want to make another set of the same Archive, when the first set is complete, just check
the check boxes next to each CD and hit the Archive button again, or to just burn a specific disk,
just have that disk checked. You can also come back at a later time and burn this Archive set again.
You can even Burn some of it now and some of it later. As long as you do not process, the existing
Archive Set will remain for you to burn additional disks. When you return to AC, just run the program
and immediately go to the Burn Page, bypassing the Process Page. The existing Archive set will be
there just as if you had just processed it.
5 - On each resultant archive (folder, CD, DVD etc) will be the entire HTML index (if selected ) for
the entire Archive Set. Just double-Click on the index.html file in the root of the media from
Windows, or click the View HTML button from within AC to View the Index. If viewed from within AC
you will actually viewing the Index in the TempIndex Folder on the hard disc, not one that was
burned to a CD. it is the same Index however.
6 - The source files are stored in the root of the archive media or in sub folders that mirror the
folder structure on the source disc. You can access them directly through Windows Explorer, or
using the View/Copy button in the HTML index.

The File Section Tree (FST) is used to select a list of files known as the File Selection List (FSL).
This FSL represents the Archive Set that will be archived during this Archive Session. FSLs can
be saved and loaded from the File menu, so that a previous FSL can be loaded into the tree. Also
the Last FSL can be loaded into the tree from the File menu. Checking a Folder checks (selects)
ALL the folders and files below it. Selections may be made across drives, as well. There is really
no limit to the specifics of an FSL. It can be 1 file or 1,000s of files.
You can also use conventional Windows Shift-Click and Control-Click to highlight groups of files
within the same folder, and then use the context menu (Right-Click) to click, unclick, or toggle file
selections.
Toolbar Buttons
The toolbar buttons provide shortcuts to assist in managing and navigating the File Selection Tree
except for the last one, Estimate Disc Usage, which is explained below.

Disc Usage Estimation
While in the Setup Page, if the Estimate Disc Usage button is hit then AC will create an estimate
of the number of discs and the HTML Photo Index size that will be required for the File Selection
set that is currently selected. After this estimate is displayed, you can either proceed with the
processing of the Archive Set, or return to the Setup Page to make changes. The estimate is

Workspaces are complete archive session snapshots. When ever you are using AC, you are
working in a Workspace. All settings, Options, Image Cache files, Processing state and Archiving
State are saved in the workspace. One or more workspaces can be created and switched
between however only one workspace can be active at a time.
Workspaces are great for managing Customers, projects or even just to have different option sets
for different archiving needs. For instance, lets say you have several customers, you may want
each customer to a unique looking html index, with a customer specific ICON in the top corner of
the index. You can create a workspace for each customer, setup up html options, volume name
options, file filter options etc and each time you need to create an archive for a customer, you just
open the appropriate workspace and all the settings are restored. Even better, lets say you
created a 6 disc archive for customer A and are in the process of burning that archive…say 2
discs into the 6. Then you need to create a quick archive for customer B. You don't have to wait
for the next 4 discs to finish burning before you do the archive for customer B. Simply stop the
Customer A archive session, switch to customer B's workspace, do your work there and when
done, switch back to Customer A's workspace. Go to the Archive Page uncheck discs 1 and 2
(since they were already completed) and continue burning Customer 1's discs.

Section 1: Image File Preview
Image Preview (Small)
By clicking on most any file in the FST, you can see a small preview of the image in the Image
Preview Window. Almost all common image types are supported (with the exception of GIF
and LZW compressed formats, due to patent protection). Even many RAW formats are
supported (Canon CRW/TIF and Nikon NEF amongst several others) with fast previews, and
without the need for lengthy conversions. (Supported File Types)
Image Preview (Large)
The image preview can also be viewed in a larger display window. Just double click the small
preview window and a larger window opens up with the same (but larger) preview image. You
can also double click on the large window and have the preview display at 100% size.

This example shows the 2 window, with the larger window set to 100%. You can Pan the
image with the mouse as you drag.
Section 2: Archive File Filter
Allows for file name/extension based filtering based on a user defined string with wildcards
separated by semi-colons. If Include is selected, the File Section List will be limited to only the
files that are in the filter string. If Exclude is selected the File Section List will contain all
checked files except the files that are in the filter string. If the Filter is unchecked, the Filter
String will have no effect. NOTE: Spaces are literally interpreted and will effect the filtering
algorithms. To edit the filter string, select the edit button and a dialog will pop up giving some
filter string examples.

24
The filter string adheres to standard Windows based wildcard filtering. When active, the filter
is applied to the File Selection tree. Only files specified by the filter will be shown in the tree.
When the tree is filtered, the word "Filtered" will appear in the background of the File Selection
tree as a reminder.
Only with "Needs Archiving" bit set. This is another filter type that enables Archive Creator
to ignore previously archived files. To help in managing what files have been or need to be
archived, Microsoft file systems support the notion of a flag associated with each file that
indicates if the file "needs Archiving". This flag is actually a' bit ' in a status 'word' attached to
each file called the Archive Bit. Any time a file is created, modified, or moved the flag is set
indicating that the file "Needs Archiving". Backup and Archiving programs can optionally
make use of this flag to keep track of which file should be backed up/archived and which
should be ignored. Typically a backup program will clear the "Needs Archiving" flag after it has
backed up the file.
As with the normal file filter feature , only files needing archiving will appear in the file selection
tree and therefore only files needing archiving will be processed and included in the archive
set. Also, the "Filtered" indicator will be active when this feature is enabled.
NOTE: The "Needs Archiving" flag is not used exclusively by Archive Creator. Other
backup and archiving programs can make use of this flag and change it's state. If you
are using other software that manages the "Needs Archiving" flag (Archive Bit) you
need to be very careful in relying on this mechanism to manage your archive.
Date/Time filter option.
In addition to filtering your file selection on extension or archive bit state, you can filter on
creation date-time and/or modification date-time. AC even keeps track of your last archive
date-time for each workspace and can be configured to automatically filter on files created or
modified after your last archive!
The archive filter section has controls to enable File Date-Time filtering. There is a checkbox

to enable it, an edit button to modify the settings and a status area that provides a summary of
the current filter settings.
Clicking the edit button or clicking in the summary area will bring up the Date/Time filter
settings dialog
From here you can select the file dates to use (creation or modification ), the type of filter (On
or After, Before and Between) and the target date/time to filter against.
Date Criteria:
AC can use the file creation date, the file modification date or both to determine if a file should
be included in the archive. At least on must be selected.
Filter Type selection:
There are three filter type selections, available on the combo box

On or After: All files with dates on or after the target date/time will be included. This is
inclusive so files matching the target date/time will be included.
Before: All files with dates before the target date will be included.
Between: When between is selected, a second set of date/time editors will appear.
This allows for selection of a target range. All files between the target range (inclusive) will be
included in the archive.
Options: There are two options that effect the behavior of the date/time filter.
Use Time: When selected both date and time are used when comparing files to the target
date/time. If disabled, the times will be ignored and only the dates will be used (default).
Use last archive date/time when "On or After" is selected: AC keeps track of the last
archive date and time (the date/time that the archive was processed). If this option is enabled,
and the Filter type is "On or After" the last archive date/time will be used and the date/time
editors will be disabled (showing the last archive date/time).

All other options are still available to customize the behavior (Created, Modified, use time).
This feature is very useful if you want to perform periodic archives of files, created or modified
after your last archive session. If enabled, the last archive date and time will also be displayed
in the file selection page's filter summary display.
Modification and Creation date columns visible on the file selection tree:
You can optionally show the modification and/or creation dates in the file selection tree. Right

Section 3: Target Media Size
The type and size of Archive Set that is being written within this session is selected in this dropdown combo box.
If you are burning CDs, then select 1 of the 4 CD selections, and if DVD then 1 of the 4 DVD
selections or if archiving to a folder then use the Folder selection. The choices are..
· CD 74Min (appx 650 MB) - Will burn to CDs and limit the capacity of each disc in the set to
appx. 650MB.
· CD 80Min (appx 700 MB) - Will burn to CDs and set the capacity of each disc in the set to
their full capacity of appx. 700 MB
· CD Custom - Will burn to CDs and limit the capacity of each disc to the value set by the
Custom Size control.
· CD HTML Index - Will burn just the HTML Photo Index to a CD, but will allow an Archive Set
of "virtual" size so that an index can be made of a large volume, such as a Hard Disk that
has been used as an Archive Target. This index can then be copied to the Hard Disk
(File|Copy Index Folder), and/or burned to a CD for reference.
· DVD (appx 4.3GB) - Will burn to DVDs and set the capacity of each disc in the set to their
full capacity of appx. 4.3GB (formatted)
· DVD Custom - Will burn to DVDs and limit the capacity of each disc to the value set by the
Custom Size control. The control can be set up to 4,480MB, but not all drives/media
combinations can support this size, so be careful when setting sizes above 4,300MB. Not all
discs will be able to be written to that size.
· DVD FAT Caching - The microsoft windows FAT file system (both FAT 16 and 32) have a
file size restriction of 4.2 gigabytes. If your system hard drive is formatted using the FAT file
system and you wish to Cache the data to disc before burning, selecting this target will
ensure that the amount of data placed on each DVD will not exceed the max file size so that
the data can be cached to disc before burning. This is also useful if generating ISO 9660
images on a FAT file system. To tell if your drive is a FAT file system drive, simple bring up
the properties window for the drive.

· DVD HTML Index - Will burn just the HTML Photo Index to a DVD, but will allow an Archive
Set of "virtual" size so that an index can be made of a large volume, such as a Hard Disk
that has been used as an Archive Target. This index can then be copied to the Hard Disk
(File|Copy Index Folder), and/or burned to a DVD for reference.
· Blu-ray Disc (appx 25GB) - Will burn to Blu-ray discs and set the capacity of each disc in
the set to their full capacity of appx. 25GB (formatted)
· Blu-ray Custom - Will burn to Blu-ray discs and limit the capacity of each disc to the value
set by the Custom Size control.
· Folder-Use this selection when archiving to a folder on a hard drive. This will allow for
effectively "unlimited" archive size so that your files will not be partitioned into archive
volumes.
· Custom DAM Bucket - Use this to distribute your files into custom sized folder buckets for
Digital Asset Management practices. Click Here for Details.
Section 4: Media Volume Name
· Archive Name (Media Volume Name) - This is the actual Windows Volume name for each
CD (or DVD) In the Archive Set. it will be appended with the sequence number of each
specific CD. For example, UserGuideDemo_1, UserGuideDemo_2, etc. When the CD is
later viewed in Windows Explorer, this is the name that will be associated with each CD in
the Windows file system.

· First Vol # - This is the number that will be appended to the Archive name to create the first
Cad in the set. The number is remembered from session to session, based on the higher of
the last burned CD and the entered number. If the Always Reset Volume Number is
checked, then this value is always set to #1.
· First Vol # - This is the number that will be appended to the Archive name to create the first
Cad in the set. The number is remembered from session to session, based on the higher of
the last burned CD and the entered number. If the Always Reset Volume Number is
checked, then this value is always set to #1.
· Width - This sets the number of characters in the volume number. The width will always be
the greater of the width setting or the actual width of the volume number. If the width is set to
2 and the vol # is 5, then the vol # will be "05". If the vol number is 123, and the width is set
to 2, then the volume number will be "123". You can also set the Width to "Auto" in which
case the width will always be the width of the volume number.
· Always Reset Volume Number - When checked, this sets the volume number to 1 for the
first CD in the Archive Set.
· First Vol: - Shows a Preview of the Volume Name, taking into account all of the settings.
Section 5: Layout/Sorting Options
These options are useful for ensuring that the files and index are sorted as desired and that
media capacity is used most efficiently, especially when folders contain files of varying sizes.
Sorting Options -You have the option to sort your archive by Name, Creation Date,
Modification Date both Acending or Decending. This is very handy when a folder contains files
taken from different cameras (with different base names) or the files have been renamed due
to post processing. Even with different names, the files can be sorted as needed. The sorting
selected is also reflected in the HTML index.
If you want the folders to be sorted as well as the files in the folders, enable the Apply Sort to
Folders option.
You can optionally show the modification and/or creation dates in the file selection tree. Right
click on the tree to bring up the context menu. There are two options here, Show Modification
Date and Show Creation date. Selecting either of these will add the associated column to the
tree.

Archive Creator
Split Folders Across Archives - When checked, this allows a folder of files to be split across
2 or more CDs. This provides the most efficient manner in which to layout the Archive Set. If
left unchecked, Archive Creator will attempt to keep an entire folder within 1 CD. If the folder is
bigger than 1 CD a dialog will be displayed.
Shuffle Files within Folders- When checked, the files within a folder, that is going to be split
between archive media will be shuffled between the media to ensure the most optimal use of
the discs. For example, lets say a folder contains the following files...
FileA FileBFileCFileD-
10 meg
10 Meg
100 Meg
10 Meg
And assume there is only 35 meg left on the first archive disc. If the Split folders options is
enabled. FileA and B will be on the first disc but C will not fit so C and D will get added to the
beginning of the second disc, leaving 10 meg unused on the first. If the shuffle files option is
enabled, then Files A, B and D will be written to the first disc and C will be added to the next,
reducing the wasted space. NOTE: Shuffling files will effect the sorting selected in the sorting
options. It will do this only for folders that get split.
Section 6: HTML Index Settings
These settings are some of the basic HTML Index options pertaining to the archive set.

or not. The text fields that you see in the bottom of this section are self explanatory and will
appear in the top frame of each index page on each CD. You can also set the location of
where the index will be written by selecting one of the following choices..
·All Disks - This is the default. The index will be written on all the disks. This is the
most convenient setting, but it is also the most inefficient in terms of space utilization.
On smaller Archive Sets, this is very convenient, on larger Archive Sets, it is better to
limit the index to one of the other choices.
·Only First Disk - This writes the Index onto the first disk along with files from the
Archive set, This is the most efficient method to create an archive set with an index
and use the least number of CDs
·Separate Disk (First) -This write the Index to the first disk, with no other files from
the archive set written to that disk.
·Separate Disk (Last) -This write the Index to the last disk, with no other files from the
archive set written to that disk.
Template- HTML Index Templates are basically specifications that tell the HTML generation
functions how to build the Index and how it should behave. For detailed description on the
templates and the differences between them see HTML Templates and Styles
Style- Some templates allow customizable styles to be applied to them. These styles can
drastically effect the look of the HTML index. For detailed description on the styles see

Index File Filter
Allows for file name/extension based filtering of which archived files appear in the HTML index.
The filter is based on a user defined string with wildcards separated by semi-colons. If
Include is selected, the files in the html index will be limited to only the files that are in the filter
string. If Exclude is selected the index will contain all checked files except the files that are in
the filter string. If the Filter is unchecked, the Filter String will have no effect. NOTE: Spaces

The filter string adheres to standard Windows based wildcard filtering. When active, the filter
is applied to the File Selection tree. Only files specified by the filter will be shown in the tree.
When the tree is filtered, the word "Filtered" will appear in the background of the File Selection
tree as a reminder.
EXIF and IPTC Table Options and Filtering
Include EXIF/IPTC Table with HTML Photo Index Viewing Images - If the EXIF (camera
shooting data) or IPTC data is available, it will be displayed in tables below the image on the
Viewing Image page. Using this option will add some time during the HTML creation phase of
the Archive Set Processing.
Filter EXIF/IPTC Data - All of the EXIF or IPTC data that is present and able to be decoded
will be put into the table if this options is not selected. If this option is selected, you can specify
those specific fields that you wish to be displayed by entering the field names (exactly) into the
text box below this option. For example, of you only wanted to see the Aperture and Shutter
speed in the EXIF table, you would enter "Aperture:Shutter" (without the quotes) in the text
box. Any additional fields should be added to the string with a colon between entries. The
entries must match the field name exactly (it is case sensitive as well), so it is a good idea to
view the table without the filter turned on, and note the exact spelling of the field names, before
the filter is used.
Thumbnail section
Determines the size, quality, and layout of the Thumbnails created for the index. This may be
turned on or off. If thumbnails are turned off, the HTML index will simply contain normal file
icons in place of each image. The Cols setting determines how many columns of thumbnail (
and therefore the width of the index) will be used. The rows option will determine how many
thumbs are on each page and therefore the number of Thumbnail pages for each specific
folder.
Some image processing can be applied to the thumbnails. Drop shadows can be added as

well as Automatic Contrast level adjustments. These are applied only to the thumbnails, the
original source image files are unchanged.
Preview Image section
Determines the inclusion, size, quality, and layout of the Viewing images created for the index.
This may be turned on or off.
Some image processing can be applied to the viewing images. Drop shadows can be added
as well as Automatic Contrast Level adjustments. These are applied only to the viewing
images, the original source image files are unchanged. On some cameras, the embedded
images used for the thumbnails and viewing images are smaller than the selected viewing
image size.
If the Upscale Image if Smaller option is enabled, the image will be up scaled to the specified
size, otherwise it will be the original size as extracted.
Photoshop Files section
Photoshop files consist of many layers of images, that, when rendered together create the final
composite image. A Photoshop file typically consists of all the independent layer data, as well
as a pre-generated composite image preview. When this option is selected (default) AC will
use the pre-generated composite image as this is faster and more accurate. If you Photoshop
files do not contain the composite image, unselect this option. AC will then attempt to
generate the image by compositing the individual layers.
High Quality Drop Shadows
When using drop shadows, by default, a simple drop shadow will be used.
Simple Drop Shadow
If the High Quality Drop Shadow option is enabled, better quality shadows will be generated.
This will extend the thumbnail processing time.

Regenerate Cached Images
Archive creator attempts to re-used previously generated thumbnail and viewing images as
long as the selected folder hierarchy and the image processing options have not been
changed. If you wish to force the re-generation of these cached images, select this option. It
is a "One Shot" option in that it will automatically be cleared after the images are processed.
Raw File Processing Options
When generating RAW image files, many cameras will also generate ancillary files containing
thumbnails and other information. When enabled, this option will hide these ancillary files from
appearing in the HTML Index (they will still be archived, just not shown in the index).
This feature works off of the extension pair lists shown below the check box. That list should
contain comma separated file extension pairs. Each pair should be separated by a semi
colon. The first extension in the pair is the extension of the raw file and the second is the
extension of the files to ignore. Files are only ignored if the base file names are the same.
For example, for some Canon Cameras, raw files have a .crw extension and for each raw file,
a matching file exists with a .thm extension. To filter out these thm files from appearing in the
index, the extension pairs list should be set to...
crw,thm
If a file image0001.crw exists in the same folder as the file image0001.thmthe image0001.thm
file will be excluded in the html index.
Of course this feature can be used with any file types and multiple pairs can be specified.
Each pair must be separated by a semi colon. For example....
crw,thm; cr2,jpg

Also, for NEF users, the Use NEF SDK option allow for the use of the NEF DLLs for more
accurate thumbnail generation and rotation (this requires the NEF DLLs to be installed on the
computer).
The 'Exif/IPTC From Hidden File' option, if selected will take the Exif or IPTC data from the
hidden file and use that for the Exif/IPTC tabled data in the HTML index.

·Include Date, Title Line, Description Line, Misc 1-2, Icon - Unselecting will remove these
text fields. Some Styles will reduce the hight of the title frame automatically when lines are
removed and there is no icon selected.
·Link- Many of the text fields and Icon allow you to associated a normal, secure, ftp or mail
link with them. Just enable the appropriate option and enter the link text (must be preceded
with the associated link type identifier.).
·Select Icon File- This will allow you to use a different Icon file for the icon in the upper left
corner (currently the Archive Creator Icon). The new icon should be no larger than 75 pixels to
ensure proper fit. The reset button will return the icon selection back to the original Archive
Creator Icon.
Navigation Frame
The navigation frame can be turned off, in addition, the name line of the archive set that
appears under the CD icons can also be turned off
Main Page
The Archive collection name on the top of the main page can be turned off. This is useful if you
are generating a index not relating to an archive, for example to upload to a web site.
Thumbnail Pages
Many aspects of the thumbnail display can be disabled. These are mostly self explanatory.
Limit Thumbs on main page-This option will limit the row of thumbnails that will appear on
the main page of the index. It doesn't not have any effect on the other thumbnail pages, just
the "root" page of the index. (not all indexes will have thumbs at the root page).
Min Rows for new Page- In the thumbnail settings section of the Contents tab, you can
specify the number of rows of thumbs per page. So if you have that set to 10 rows and you
have 21 row of thumbnail, you will get 3 pages, the last with 1 row. To avoid having sparsely

populated pages, the setting can be used to set the minimum number of rows required to start
a new page. If this setting was set to 2 then in the above example, there would be only two
thumbs pages created, the second with 11 rows.
Viewing Pages
Many aspects of the viewing page display can be disabled. These are mostly self explanatory.
1.3.2.4
Preview HTML Settings
In the lower right corner of all the Settings Tabs is a button called Preview HTML Index Settings.
This feature allows you to quickly Preview your html index settings without having to process your
archive first. It doesn't preview your selected files, it uses a special folder based 'template' to
generate the contents of the preview index. There is a new folder in Archive install folder to hold
this template called PreviewSrc….
Basically, when you press the html preview button, instead of building images based on your
selection, it builds images based on the contents of the PreviewSrc folder. It will build an index of
what ever files and folder it finds there. If you place raw files, the normal raw processing will be
done. New folders can be added as desired to fully preview how the html index will look. Again,
this is not designed to preview your selection, but to preview your html settings.
When using the preview, it uses a temporary, completely separate working environment to process
the index so that the normal image cache and index setting comparison is not affected. For
example, if you have processed 1000 images normally with drop shadow turned on, then you do an
html index preview with drop shadow turned off. Then go back and turn drop shadow on again and
process your 1000 images, the normal image cache and index settings should not have been

Archive Creator Help File (click to expand)
42
tampered with and the 1000 images should not be reprocessed.
To make the preview generation even faster, we make use of .plh files and the HTML preview
image setting option. Basically, when processing a preview, any time a file with a .plh (placeholder)
extension is found, the image file specified in the HTML Preview image setting is used instead. The
.plh files are place holders for this image. This image is only processed once and used in place of
all .plh files. So many files and folders can be added to the Preview Src folder and as long as the
files have .plh extension, the process will be very fast (since it only processes the image once. ) Of
course, as before, any file can be added to the directory tree and will be processed normally. Also,
once processed, they are stored in the preview image cache will also be reused as long as no
image based settings are changed.
1.3.3
Process Page
After the entries are made in the Setup Page, the File Selection List must be processed to create
the Archive Set layout and the HTML Index (if selected). This happens in the Process page.
When the Process button is pressed the Setup Page is replaced by the Process Page.
If the "Auto Begin Processing" preference is selected, then the processing will begin immediately.
© 2002-2003 PictureFlow LLC
43
Archive Creator
If it is not selected, then the processing is begun by pressing the Begin Processing Button.
Note:If the "Auto Begin Processing" Preference is unselected you can freely move between the
Setup and Process pages without causing a lengthy process to begin.
Archive Creator then begins its process of dividing up the files onto the required CDs. You will see
its progress as it goes. It also has to create the HTML index if that option is selected, as well as
build the thumbnails and the viewing images. This takes a few minutes to complete, depending on
your options and the size of the File Selection List and the size of the images. For a large Archive
set this can take some time, as thumbnails and preview images are being created for each file in
the File Selection List. You will see the picture that is currently being processed in the Image
Preview progress display when the thumb and viewing images are being created.
The processing of the File Selection List (FSL) goes through the following sequence of events...
·Process the FSL to determine the size of the Archive Set
·Calculate an estimate of the HTML index
·Use this data to do an estimated CD Layout and display it to the screen (at this point the Layout
Tree may be expanded to see the layout if desired)
·Process the HTML Index images, creating the Thumbnail and Viewing images as specified in the
Setup Page (this phase is shown in the above screen shot)
·Redo the CD Layout, based on the actual size of the images created (a CD may be added or
deleted at this point)
·Create the actual HTML pages based on the actual final layout of the Archive Set.
·If required, further optimize the Archive Set by doing 1 more Layout/Page Creation pass. The
image files do not have to be reprocessed, so this pass is quite fast.
Note: In the example we are working with there were 3,493 files in the FSL. For each of those
files a thumbnail, viewing image and an HTML page all had to be generated for each file in the
FSL for a total of over 13,972 files including the source files to be archived. This takes about 15
minutes. If the HTML Index does not require thumbs and viewing images, it takes about 2
minutes. If there is no index, about 5 seconds. So the time required for the processing phase
varies greatly and is dependant on the number of files in the FSL and whether or not images are
to be included in the HTML index, and the types and sizes of the source files. (For example a 3
CD archive set with large size files, would only take a fraction of this time, because there would be
so fewer images to process. The example used in this help file is a worst case scenario...lots of
small files to archive).
This shows the Process Page with the Layout Tree expanded and a JPEG image file being

As you can see it shows the 4 CDs that have been prepared to be burned.
The next step would be to select the Archive Target from the target pull down menu
There are several targets available
· DVD/CD Media-Creates a normal Data CD or DVD
· ISO 9660 Files-Creates one or more CD/DVD Image Files that can be used by other software to
burn the actual media.
· Folder-Creates an archive to a folder on one of the system drives.
Archive to DVD/CD Media

Then...
· Select the CD/DVD Burner if you have more than 1
· Select the number of copies. Copies will be made sequentially before preceeding to the
next disc in the archive.
· Select the burn speed (it will default to the top speed allowed by the burner/media)
· Whether or not to Cache Files to Hard Drive Before Writing CD (write the CD ISO image
to disk..not available for DVD) before burning each CD. In some cases based on disk speed,
computer speed, fragmentation of the disks, etc., this option may allow for faster burning of
the CD. It is generally required if you are using a drive that does not have Burn-Proof
Technology. It is always better to set this option to ON. It can produce a better burn, with or
without Burn-Proof Technology. With it, there is less reliance on resorting to the Burn-Proof
Technology which will make the disk easier to read on a wider variety of drives in the future.
Without it, you will be able to archive using faster burn speeds, before encountering an
Under-run error, which renders the disk a coaster. So unless you are pressed for time, we
recommend always setting the Cache Option ON.
· Test Write (CD Only), rather than a real write. This goes through the motions of writing the
CD to ensure that the computer and disks can keep up with the CD burn speed selected. It
will issue Buffer Under-Run Errors (if they occur) just as if you were writing to the CD. So
this allows you to test the through-put of your system without wasting the physical CD.
· Use Burn Proof (CD Only) – This should always be checked if it is available on your CD
burner. It allows the computer to fall behind the needs of the CD Burner, and not cause a
fatal error which would otherwise occur. Always use a Burn-Proof drive if you can. With
Burn-Proof (or QuickLink or similar technology) enabled, you can do other work on the PC
without running the risk of causing an Under Run error while burning. This allows the act of
burning CDs not so painful as you can be surfing the web or doing email or other simple
tasks while the CDs are burning. The burning of CDs does take a lot of processing power,
so do not expect to work in a processor intensive program at full speed.
Note: Some drives do not allow the selection of their Burn-Proof Technology to be
turned on or off. In some cases there will be a check mark that cannot be turned off,
and in some cases the option will be grayed out even though the feature is in place and
turned on. This is a function of the particular drive and we have no control over it. You
will know if the Burn-Proof Technology is working if the Drive Buffer goes down to 0%
and the disk continues to burn.
· Verify Level –
o Off – This Cancels the verify process that is otherwise done automatically after a CD
is burned. The CDs can be verified later using the Verify page, but we strongly
recommend that you do a Full verify on each CD that you burn.
o Quick – This checks to see that all files appear in the CD table of contents with the
correct file size. It does not check the integrity of the data.
o Full - A full byte for byte comparison is made against the Source files. Every bit is
checked for a 100% match of the files on the CD vs. the files on the HD. We recommend
this setting.
Archive to ISO Image:
Archive to ISO image allows you to create ISO9660 image files instead of burning the media
directly. This allows you to burn these images using a different burning application if you wish.

The only option here is the output folder. In the example above, you will end up with 4 files in
this folder, 2004_Photos1.iso to 2004_Photos4.iso.
No verification is available in this mode, however, once the disc is burned from the iso image,
you can insert the disc, go to the verify page and run a post burn verify. As above, you can still
add these archives to the master index.
Archive to Folder:
Archive to Folder basically copies all archive files, including the entire html index to an
alternate location. There are only two settings for this option…The output folder and verify
level (the files can be verified after coping).
The output folder selected will become the "Root" Folder for all archive sets. All files that
would have normally been burned to disk will now be copied to a folder named after the
archive set volume name located under the root folder . For example if the archive volume
name was "Photos" and it consisted of 6 discs, if you were to Archive to Folder there would be
created 6 folders under the root, Photos1-Photos6, each containing all of the files that would
have been on the volumes themselves. When archiving to a folder target, the archive can still
be added to the master index as before.
Archives to folder can be verified after the fact just like CDs or DVDs. Just go to the verify
page …
and select the verify src to the root folder and pick your folder to verify.
If you wish to build an "Unlimited Sized Archive" there is an option on the File Selection page
in the Target Media Size combo box called 'Folder'…

Selecting 'Folder' removes any size limitations for the archive session. This will allow you to
create a single archive volume for the archive session.
When archiving to a folder, and the folder already exists, you will be prompted with a option
box with the following options…
You can also set up auto defaults for both normal as well as direct burn settings on the Direct
Burn options tab independently. in the main preferences tab….
Select Which Discs to Archive
The next step would be to select what you want archived. You can check or uncheck any
of the Discs to keep them in the burn process or not. This is useful if a CD/DVD burn fails
and you wish to come back to burn it again. The lowest numbered disc that is checked is
always the one that is burned next, and then they are burned in sequence.
Start the Archive
To begin the archive process, insert black or erasable media if needed and press the
Archive button. The archive process will begin.

Additional Options
· Burn data only -When this is selected, no archive creator files will be written, this includes
the index, archive setting and archive contents files. Only the source files will be written.
NOTE: This disc will not be able to be fully verified in the future since there are no Archive
creator system files on the Media.
· Burn HTML Index Only - When checked, this will burn the first disk checked (Using its
volume name) and write only the HTML index onto that disc. This is useful if you have
already created an Archive Set, and want to have an extra Index disk, to give to someone or
for an additional Index for another location. If additional disks are checked, the burn process
will continue with those disks, as usual. This option only affects the first disk burned, and
would usually, just be used to burn an additional Index disk. Do not use this option to have
the Index on a separate disk from the Archive set, as the source files on the first disk burned
will be missing. Instead, choose the proper disk option in the setup page. The purpose of
this option is just to allow the burning of an additional Index disk, without having to reprocess the Archive Set.
Burn screen after burning with the Index Only Option..
· Archive Bit Management - To help in managing what files have been or need to be
archived, Microsoft file systems support the notion of a flag associated with each file that
indicates if the file "needs Archiving". This flag is actually a' bit ' in a status 'word' attached
to each file called the Archive Bit. Any time a file is created, modified, or moved the flag is
set indicating that the file "Needs Archiving". Backup and Archiving programs can optionally
make use of this flag to keep track of which file should be backed up/archived and which
should be ignored. Typically a backup program will clear the "Needs Archiving" flag after it
has backed up the file.
The ability for Archive Creator to "Ignore" previously archived files can be enabled as a
special "Archive File Filter" on the setup page.
When archiving, the "Clear 'Needs Archiving" option, when set, will automatically go through
the files that were just archived and clear the Needs Archiving bit. It does that after

verification if enabled or when the archive is done if not.
In addition, you can manually manage the Archive Bits for the Archive sets or collection as a
whole. To do so, while on the archive page, go to the file menu and select Manage Needs
Archiving Bits or hit the Manage Archive bits button….
You will see a small dialog. From here you can either set or clear the bits for all files in the
archive sets. This function operates off of the Archive Page collection list (list showing all
the archive sets in a collection with the CD icons and check boxes next to them). By
checking discs on that list and using this dialog you can Set or Clear the archive bits on the
files represented on those archive sets.
·
Check/Uncheck ALL Context menu - You can check and uncheck ALL the discs, by Rightclicking to bring up the context menu which allows you to check or uncheck ALL the discs.
You can then selective choose those which you wish to burn.

Basic Burning of CD/DVDs
The archive process for most targets is fairly similar. The most complex process is burning to CD or
DVD media. This section will describe this process in detail. The other targets are similar.
When you hit the Archive button AC will begin the burn process and proceed to burn the CDs/DVDs
that have check marks on them. When each disk is completed, the verify will be performed
according to the option that had been selected. When each disk is complete (writing and verifying)
AC will ask for the a blank disk to be inserted into the drive and it will go on to the next disk..
The sequence of events is as follows:
First the ISO image for the first disk is prepared in memory. If there is proper blank media in the
drive burning will then begin. If there is not blank media in the drive you will see this dialog box.
If the Cache to Hard Disk is enabled(CD Only), the files will be written to a temporary ISO image file
in the "BurnCache" folder in the path as set in the AC Preferences.. During the Cache process an
indication of completion is displayed in the status bar..
If you hit Cancel the Write process will be cancelled for the entire session (don't worry...you can start
it again). otherwise insert a blank media in the drive and hit OK. The screen will then look like this..

55
Archive Creator
The status is always shown in the "Progress Panel" on the right.
When the disk is done burning, it is closed as indicated in the status panel. This takes about 30
seconds. The disk is then ejected so that it may be remounted and recognized by Windows in
preparation for the verify process (if selected). The CD will automatically be withdrawn if the drive
allows it, but some do not and this cannot be detected (like on a laptop). The following dialog is
displayed during the process..

The CD will be re-inserted automatically in a few seconds if the drive had that capability or you can
hit OK to re-insert the drive before the timeout. If the drive cannot be re-inserted, then you should do
it manually and then hit OK. The Verify will then proceed and complete. If errors are detected, you
will be informed and the disk will be marked in the disk tree. You can re-burn the disk by beginning
the burn process again. Whatever disks have check marks will be burned in this burn session.
If there were no errors then the following dialog will be displayed, and the screen will look like this..
Insert a blank media and Hit OK.
Here is a screen with Disk 2 being burned.

Notice that Disk 1 is Gold in color with no check mark indicating that it has been successfully burned
and verified (if verify was turned on). The status of Disk 2 is shown. This process continues until all
the disks are completed.
This is Disk 2 being Verified..
When Disk 3 is complete the following dialogs are displayed..
Override Last disk on DVD burn Feature.
When burning DVDs, often you are left with the last disc that is very under utilized. You can
choose to burn that last disc to a CD instead of a DVD. If a Blank CD is inserted when the last disc
is about to be burned AND there is enough capacity on the CD to write the remaining files, AC will
pop up a notification that a CD is inserted and give you the option to use it or not.

MDS Burn (Mulit Drive Seqential)
MDS (Multi Drive Sequential) Burn functionality allowing Sequential burning to
mulitple drives.
In the past, burners were very costly and it was difficult to have more than one or two burners
attached to a system. With the burner costs going down and the advent of Firewire and USB
burners it is relatively cost effective and simple to support many burners on a single system. MDS
Burn allows you to take advantage of this by using multiple burners to burn your multi disk
archives.
MDS Burn, in conjunction with the Direct Archive capability of Archive Creator allows you to select
the files to archive, load up all your burners with blank media, start the archive and walk away.
Archive Creator will process the archive, build the index and start the burn, fully unattended. It will
automatically use each burner sequentially to burn the next disc and continue to burn until it runs
out of media or the archive is complete! If your archive contains more discs that you have burners
for just keep feeding blank media into an available burner and Archive Creator will keep going until
all the discs are complete!
Operation Overview
Lets say you have 4 burners attached to your system F:, G:, H: and I: (They can be internal,
external, scsi, Firewire, usb or any combination). You are about to archive a 3 disc archive
and you want two copies (6 disks in all). If MDS Burn is enabled you can load all 4 drives
with blank media, and start the archive. Archive Creator will start burning on the first drive it
finds blank media in and the burn will continue until there is no blank media. The process
will go like this...

Archive Creator
F:
Disc 1, Copy 1. After the burn and verify the drive will eject the disc (optional) and the next
drive with blank media will be found (MDS Burn always works in drive letter order). Since
media was in drive G it will start burning on G:.
G: Disc 1, Copy 2. The burn and verify complete, the drive is ejected and H: is used next.
H: Disc 2, Copy 1. The burn and verify complete, the drive is ejected and I: is used next.
I:
Disc 2, Copy 2. The burn and verify complete, the drive is ejected and a search is done for
the next drive with blank media. There are two scenarios here.
1-New blank media was loaded into the other drives as they were completed. Then the
first drive with blank media will be used next (F:).
OR
2-No media is available. A dialog box is presented indicating that new media is needed.
The user adds blank media to F: and G: and presses OK. F: is found to have blank media
and is used next.
F:
Disc 3, Copy 1. The burn and verify complete, the drive is ejected and G: is used next.
3, Copy 2. The burn and verify complete, the drive is ejected and the Archive is
G: Disc
complete.
When the archive is complete, a report is available on the Archive Report tab (see below).
This report provides information about each disc that was burned, what it contains and what
drive it was burned on, as well as any errors that were encountered.
During the archive session, you can see the current state of all your drives in the Device Status
Tab on the Archive page.

Configuring MDS Burn
There are a few steps involved in configuring MDS Burn for the first time. First, configure
the burning order of your drives, set your MDS Burn Options, Enable the MDS Burn
Function, then enable each drive for MDS Burn and go...
1-Configure the burn order of your drives.
MDS Burn uses the drive letter order of your system to determine the order in which drives
are checked for blank media. The drives are check in alphabetic drive order, skipping drives
that don't have appropriate media. You can configure this order by changing the drive letters
of your system using windows disc manager. To bring up the disc manager...
·Go to Start Menu and select Control Panel
·Open the Administrative tools and double click Computer Management
·Select the Disc Manager
·Then select the Burner you wish to change the letters of, right click on it and bring up the
Change Drive Letter dialog box.
From here you can change the drive letters of your burners to have them in the order you
wish Archive Creator to use.
2-Configure your MDS Burn Options

In the Preferences dialog there is a tab called MDS Burn.
There are three sections of options here that effect how MDS operates.
Error Handling:
Continue on Write Error: If a write error occurs during an MDS Burn the Archive Creator
will abort the archive process. If this option is enabled, that disc will be skipped and the next
disc in the archive session will be burned to the next available burner. Appropriate error
messages will be logged to the Archive Report and at the end of a the burn, you will be
notified of the number or errors encountered during the MDS Burn.

63
Archive Creator
Continue on Verify Error: If a verify error occurs during an MDS Burn the Archive Creator
will abort the archive process. If this option is enabled, that disc will be skipped and the next
disc in the archive session will be burned to the next available burner. Appropriate error
messages will be logged to the Archive Report and at the end of a the burn, you will be
notified of the number or errors encountered during the MDS Burn.
Retry on Error: If a write or verify error occurs and the Continue On Error option is enabled,
AC will try to reburn the disc. It will continue to reburn up to the selected number of times
until it gets a valid, verified burn.
Misc:
Auto Reset: The normal operation for MDS is to start using (or at least checking for media)
on the drive that is currently selected. This could either be manually changed or it could be
the last drive used for MDS burn in a previous session. In this mode, you can manually
determine which drive MDS will start using. If MDS Auto Reset is enabled, the selected
drive will be reset back to the earliest drive letter before each archive session beings. In this
way you can always know which drive your session will start burning on.
Use Next available media on any drive: Normally, AC will burn a disc, then go to the next
drive in sequence and look for blank media, If no media is found it will prompt the user to
put new media in that particular drive. This helps to keep the burned discs in order. If this
option is set, AC will first attempt to use media in the next drive in sequence but if no media
is found it will continue on looking and use the next available media found. It will only prompt
the use if no blank media is found on any drive.
Fixed Write Speed For All Drives:
AC normally remembers that last speed used for each drive based on the media type and
will use those values by default during and MDS burn. However you can specify a fixed
speed to be used on all drives based the media type in this section. If enabled, AC will
attempt to set the drive to the speed selected. NOTE: Most drives will take the speed
request and set themselves to the closes support speed however, this behavior is not
guaranteed.
If fixed speed is selected, the burning options on the Archive page will indicate the speed as
shown here..
One more option on the General Tab!:
Don't Eject After Burn: This is not an MDS Specific option however, if enabled, the drive
drawers will remain IN after each burn is complete. If unchecked, the drives will
automatically eject after each burn. This is convenient for large archive session so that you
can periodically check your progress, know which drives are done burning (since they are
ejected) and replace the media with blank media.

3- Enabling the MDS Burn feature
Once your MDS burn feature has been activated you will see a new check box "Enable MDS
Burn"
When enabled, it will appear green to emphasis that the option is enabled.
This setting is persisted automatically with your preferences.
4- Enabling the Drives for MDS Burn
You can specify which drives are enabled for MDS burn and exclude others. When MDS
Burn is enabled, an additional check box "MDS Enabled" will appear in the Burning Options
section.
This check box applies to the currently selected burner. You can go through your burners in
the burner selection combo box to the left and enable or disable each on. These settings
are persisted as well.
NOTES
· Why not Simultaneous burning? Simultaneous burning to different drives with different
data places a very large load on your system resources. We feel that this will result in a

less reliable system and may cause more archive failures.
· MDS Burn does not work with rewritable media. If rewritable media is detected the drive
will be skipped.
· For MDS Burn to work efficiently you should ensure that all the drives enabled have
drawers that can be pulled in via program control. Most laptop burners cannot be pulled in
automatically and will cause problems during verification.

The Archive Set Discs
What does Archive Creator burn onto the CDs (or DVDs)
When an Archive Set is created, 1 or more CDs is burned with copies of the source files that are
being archived along with an HTML Web Style Index if this option was selected. Here is what the
typical AC CD looks like from a few different perspectives.
Normally the CD will AutoRun when it is inserted into a CD drive (if the computer has its "AutoRun"
setting turned on). In that case the Index, if present, will open in the default browser automatically
(see below)
If the CD is viewed from Windows Explorer it will look like this.

Archive Creator
The files and folders that are burned onto each of the CDs in the Archive Set are as follows:
Files:
· Read_Me.html - A file that explains the contents of the CD. (This paragraph is in the read_me file,
in addition to some other information).
· Index.html - (optional) - If this file is present, then an Index has been included on each CD that
will serve as a guide to the archived files that are in the source folders. By double clicking on this
file, within Windows Explorer, the Index will be opened in the default Web browser that is installed
on the computer. You can navigate within the index to see filenames and/or thumbnails that
represent the files that are stored within the source folders.
· autorun.inf - This file is used by Windows to automatically launch the Index when the CD is
inserted into computers that have this "AutoPlay" feature turned on.
Folders:
· ACSys - This folder contains the images and other files used to display the Index, as well as other
Archive Creator system files.
· Source folders or files-depending on the selected files, the folders and files in the archive set will
appear at the root of the disc. Any files in the Least Common folder will appear at the root of the
CD, all other folder will retain their relative path from the root.
To see details of the HTML index that resides on the discs see the section on HTML Index
1.3.10 HTML Index
The HTML index is designed to show the contents of the archive set. The index can be installed on all
discs in the archive set, a separate disc, the first or the last. (Click Here for Details). The index can
also be copied into the Master index for off line reference (Click Here for Details). The index is divided

It shows the highest level of the entire index for all 2 disks, even though only 1 disk is inserted into

thumbnails are not on this CD(#2), but on the 1st CD in the Archive set. We are also reminded that
the CD that we are now viewing is the 2nd CD, because we can still see the Gold CD in the left CD
navigation frame. Very cool! So to view the entire archive set you do not have to switch CDs!!
(Assuming that the Index on all disks option has been selected).
At the top of the Main Frame of the index you will see the name of the Archive Volume and under
that the Name of the Folder we are viewing....
If the number of thumbnails in the folder exceeds the settings for Number of Rows and Number of
Columns (Click Here for Details) then AC will create multiple pages of thumbnails. In this example
we have two pages as indicated along side the folder name (Page 2 of 2). Along side that are
thumbnail page navigation buttons.

These buttons will navigate the thumbnail pages, so First will bring you to the first page of thumbs in
the folder, Previous will bring you to the previous page etc. The Home button will return you to the
main index page.
Clicking on any of the thumbnails will bring you to a page showing a larger (viewing) image (if
enabled).

Now we have clicked on one of the thumbnails and we are brought to the viewing image that was
created from the source file. As you can see there is the same type of information that tells you
about where you are and what you are viewing as well as Exif or IPTC information if enabled. You
can use the navigation arrows to go to the next and previous viewing images, or back to the
thumbnail index. Or you can jump to another disks folder list by clicking on one of the disk icons on
the left. This will bring you to the main page, showing the folders on the disc you just click on.
Here we are looking at thumbnails from the 2nd disk, which is the one in the drive. Notice the File
and Folder buttons below each thumbnail. They are explained below.

File and Folder Buttons
Note: These buttons are designed to be compatible with most browsers on both the Windows and
Macintosh Operating Systems. However, due to the wide number of versions of both Operating
systems and Browsers, in some cases these buttons will not work as expected. However, the
Archived Source files, should always be accessible via the operating system's normal file copying
means, including drag and drop/
· Folder - When this button is clicked the containing folder of the actual archived source file is
opened in a new browser window. You can now drop and drag any of the source files within
Windows to copy your archived files to anywhere in your system.

· File - When this button is clicked you will get a "Save As" dialog box that will allow you to save the
original archived source file (not the viewing image), to anywhere in your system, including
across network drives.

78
· Note: The File button works differently for different types of files. If the source file is one
recognized by the browser (like a JPG), then the browser will simply open the file if you click the
File button. In order to get the Save As dialog, you must right click on the File button and select
"Save Target As...". You will then see the download dialog that will lead you to the Save As dialog.
· For a file that is not recognized by the browser (like a CRW, TIFF, PSD), you can simply click on
the File button
This is an extremely simple and powerful way to retrieve your archived source files and is one of the
great strengths of Archive Creator. The CDs that AC produce are very powerful tools, not just a copy
of your files. And they will generally work on any Windows or Macintosh computer with Internet
Explorer or Netscape, with some minor exceptions based on OS and Browser versions.
1.3.10.2 HTML Templates and Styles
On the Archive Settings tab of the Setup page there are setting for selection of HTML Index
Template and Style...

HTML Index Templates are basically specifications that tell the HTML generation functions how to
build the Index and how it should behave. Some templates allow customizable styles to be applied
to them. These styles can drastically effect the look of the HTML index.
There are currently two Templates defined.
Classic Template - The classic template is basically the same template that Version 1 and 2 used.
The main advantage of this template is that it uses very basic HTML only, No Java, No Style Sheets
etc. This allows the template to be extremely compatible with almost any browser of any vintage out
there. If maximum compatibility is you goal, the Classic Template is for you. (The only difference
between the classic template in Version 3 is that it now supports the Number of Rows Options for
multi page thumbnail support. None of the Index Construction options apply to the Classic
Template)

The Classic Template
Default Template- The Default template has all the features of the classic template plus better
navigation, customizable construction, user defined links, and multiple styles. When the default
template is selected, the Styles Combo box will be filled with a number of styles that can be applied
to the template. The styles effect how the index looks, but the behavior is identical.
The following are the Styles available for the default template.....

1.3.10.3 Advanced HTML Index Features
Feature to load and save HTML index settings.
Allows saving and loading of HTML Index specific settings. This is handy if you want to store various
index content and construction configurations and recall them at a later time. Also, these saved
settings can be associated with a HTML Index Template style...see below. This feature can be
accessed from the file menu while on the main setup page.
Creating New Styles

Archive Creator
NOTE: This is an advanced topic, only those with experience in HTML editing and Cascading
Style Sheets should attempt this. This is NOT a supported feature of the program and is listed
here for completeness and to allow advanced uses to modify their styles.
In the Templates folder, there can be any number of templates and Styles installed. The templates are
quite specific to AC and are not considered user editable. The styles are, however, standard
Cascading Style Sheets. The program populates the template and style combo box by looking into the
templates folder and taking all (non master template) folder names and adding them to the combo box.
This way new templates and styles can be added without modifying code. Each template can have
zero or more Styles associated with it.
The folder layout for templates is as follows…
There are two templates now, a classic template which is the old style template (no style sheets) but
with all the new html index features. This is for compatibility (no style sheets means highest
compatibility with all browsers). There is a new template called Default Which uses style sheets. In
the template directory is a new folder called Styles. There can be 0 or more sub folders for user
selectable styles to be applied with the template. The styles combo box is dynamically loaded based
on the folders in the Styles folder. A style is comprised of three things (all optional), a style sheet that
allows customization of most every element in the index. (see the style sheet contents at the end of
this document for details), A sub folder of image overrides and a set of html index setting suggestions.
The contents of the style image folder is copied to the html index destination folder when the index is
being created. It is copied after the normal images folder is copied from the template directory to the
destination html index folder. This allows any image in the html index to be overridden when a
template is used. Simple add any image you wish to override existing images to the images folder in
the style.
Also, there are menu items on the file menu to Save/Load html index settings as well as save the
setting with the current style. This will write a subset of the xml setting (only to do with html index
construction) with the current style, When you select a style, if a setting file exists with the style, the you
will be asked you want to load the style specific settings.
Between the Style sheet (allowing customization of the font, colors, borders, background images, etc),
the image overrides, and the html construction option sets. Each style can create unique looks for a
given template.
An important note, When using drop shadows, the graphics library needs to know about the
background color to shade into. The code looks to the style sheet for the body.main background color
and uses that one. If not there, it uses white.

1.3.11 The Verify Page
When you first enter the Verify Page...
·AC scans for CD/DVD drives and mounted discs and puts a list into the combo box --it
automatically selects the drive that has a mounted disc. If multiple discs are mounted it picks
the first one that it sees.
You can select what your verify source is, Disc or Folder. Folder option would be for archives

that were previously written to a folder.
If the disc was made by Archive Creator...
·You select whether to compare the files or read the files. The compare option will only work if
this disc was made with AC. Select "Compare" if you know that the source files are still on the
hard drive. Otherwise select "Just Read".
·Click on Verify and AC looks to the disc to get the list of files that were originally archived on
this disc
·It first scans to make sure that all the files in the list are on the disc and on the HD. This is
called a Quick Verify. If there are no errors, it then compares each CD file with each HD file bit
for bit.
·Errors are reported in the large list box.
·Since the compare is based on the Archive File List, it does not bother to compare (and waste
time) comparing the thumbnail files and the viewing image files. Just the original source files
are compared.
·If you know that the source files are no longer on the HD or have been moved, then select
Read Only. In this case, also from the File List it reads every bit for each file in the list so that
the CD integrity can be assured.
If the disc was not made by Archive Creator...
·This is detected when you click on Verify and you are told, and asked if you wish to read the
entire disk.
·If you say yes, then every bit (based on the files in the TOC) is read to check the integrity of
the entire files system of the disc. This is great for discs that have been burned long ago to see
if all files can be read from this drive.
Verify progress is shown here
Errors are display in the large List Box

You can manage the archive bits on collections already burned. To do this, insert an Archive
Creator generated disc or point to a folder. You will see a button called Manage "Needs

Selecting this button or using the File menu item, you will see a dialog similar to the one below.
This will give you the option of managing the archive bits for the source files on either the
inserted disc only or the entire collection.

1.3.12 Direct Archive
The direct archive feature allows you to start processing an archive and walk away (unattended
operation). You can configure the archive target before the processing of the html index begins
and the html processing, archive process and master index management can be fully automated.
Most situations that would normally require human intervention, like whether or not to erase non
black erasable media, can be automatically handed so that the process can continue unattended
until physical user intervention is required…like changing to new media etc.
For Folder and ISO image burn targets as well as single media archives, the entire process can be
started and will compete without user intervention, including adding the archive to the master
index. For multi disc archives, the process will continue until the second blank is required.
There is a new button on the main command strip call Direct Archive….
It is active only from the main setup page. If Direct Archive is selected instead of the Process
button… you will be taken first to a preliminary Archive Page where you can select your burn target
and any burn target options.

Archive Creator
When the target is selected, simply press the "Proceed" button and the system will automatically
take the archive session through the normal HTML Index/Layout Processing and back to the main
Archive Processing page and take the archive processing as far as possible before human
intervention is required.
There are some preferences that can be set (either from the normal Preferences Dialogs or by
hitting the "Advanced Options" button on the Direct Archive Setup page (see above)). The options
tell the system if and how to handle some common situations that would normally require user
intervention. See...Direct Archive Preference
1.3.13 File Distribution for Digital Asset Management Archiving (DAM Buckets)
Some Digital Asset Management techniques require storing your files in archivable sized buckets
(folders).
Archive Creator 3 can be used to help distribute files into DAM folder buckets. You simple select
the file you want distributed, configure the target folder bucket size and process it. Archive Creator
will either move or copy the files into the folder buckets, even preserving the exiting folder
hierarchy within the archive buckets.
There is a unique "Backfill" feature which enables you to backfill a partially filled folder from a

previous session. For example, if Tuesday you shoot 500 meg of images and process them into
200 meg buckets, you will have 2 full folders but the last folder will be half filled. On Saturday you
shoot another 500 meg of images, when archive processes those images, it will look into the last
folder and give you the option of "Backfilling" the last folder with the first hundred meg of images
before creating a new folder bucket.
It is highly recommended that you set up a workspace specifically for doing DAM Folder Archiving.
See the section on Workspaces for instruction.
Setup
To begin a DAM Archive, start by selecting your files in the file selection tree , then select "Custom
DAM Folder bucket" as your target media....
Once you select a DAM folder bucket project, the HTML index property will be disabled as indexes
are not
You will be able to select you folder size in 1 Megabyte increments. The folders that AC will create
will be named using the same naming mechanism as used for Volume Name Specification
When you start the process, AC will look to see if a folder with the prior volume exists and if it does
how much remaining space is in the folder (unstill it exceeds the bucket size). If there is enough
space, AC will prompt you to determine if it should back fill the last folder.
© 2002-2003 PictureFlow LLC
99
Archive Creator
If you select Yes, the last used folder will be filled before the new folders are created. There are a
few options in the General Tab of the Preferences that allow you to customize how the back fill
feature operates.
Enable DAM Folder Backfill: This check box will disable or enable the backfill function. Uncheck
it if you never want to backfill previous folders.
Percent of bucket size required to backfill: This value represents the percentage of the total
bucket size that must be free in the previous bucket folder to allow the backfill to take place. If
your bucket size is 100 MBs and you set this to 10 percent, AC will only try to backfill if you have 90
MBs or less in the previous bucket folder.
Prompt: If checked, you will be prompted to backfill if the free space is greater than or equal to the
specified percentage of the folder bucket size. If unchecked the backfill will happen automatically.
Processing
Once you start the processing AC will distribute the files between the folders and display the
results on the processing page.

You will notice that bucket 19 has less data in it. This is because it was backfilled. There was 462
MBs of room in it available.

When you go to the Archive screen the Folder Target option will automatically be selected for you.
You will see your folder listed as shown here...

You have a choice of either doing a copy or a move. If you do a copy, you can enable the verify
options. When doing a move you cannot. The advantage of a move is that it is significantly faster
if the target folder is on the same disc and the source files.
NOTE: A move will not delete any of the containing source folders. You will have to clean these
up after the archive process is complete.
During the archive process the Icons associated with the folders will change to represent the
following states..
Target Folder is empty and ready for archive
Target Folder is empty and ready for archive. The Archive contains and HTML index (this
can happen if you are doing a normal folder Archive, not a DAM folder bucket process.
Target Folder contains files already. This can happen if you have backfilled or if there
happens to be files already in the folders. This is not an error condition and the archive will
proceed. It is just to bring attention to the fact that files are present. When this occurs AC will
show the total amount of space used by the files already in the file.

1.3.14 Workspaces
Workspaces are complete archive session snapshots. When ever you are using AC, you are
working in a Workspace. All settings, Options, Image Cache files, Processing state and Archiving
State are saved in the workspace.
Workspaces are great for managing Customers, projects or even just to have different option sets
for different archiving needs. For instance, lets say you have several customers, you may want
each customer to have a unique looking html index, with a customer specific ICON in the top corner
of the index. You can create a workspace for each customer, setup up html options, volume name
options, file filter options etc and each time you need to create an archive for a customer, you just
open the appropriate workspace and all the settings are restored. Even better, lets say you created
a 6 disc archive for customer A and are in the process of burning that archive…say 2 discs into the
6. Then you need to create a quick archive for customer B. You don't have to wait for the next 4
discs to finish burning before you do the archive for customer B. Simply stop the Customer A
archive session, switch to customer B's workspace, do your work there and when done, switch back
to Customer A's workspace. Go to the Archive Page uncheck discs 1 and 2 (since they were
already completed) and continue burning Customer 1's discs.
Workspaces can even be schedule for automatic operation!
Workspace Management
The currently active workspace is displayed above the file selection tree on the main page of
the application. To manage your workspaces, click on the browse button next to the active

The workspace scheduler allows actions to be performed on a given workspace at prescheduled times. This combination of a Workspace, Schedule and Action are called Jobs.
There is even a job log file system to log the details and results of all jobs processed. Three
actions can be specified to be performed on a workspace…

Load and Process
Load, Process and Start Archive (using the Direct Archive operation feature
described above)
NOTE: The Scheduler feature utilizes the standard windows Task
Scheduler functionality to do the actually scheduling. Please ensure
that this is properly functioning on your system. On XP you will need to
log in to an account with a password associated with it for the task
scheduler to operate properly, In addition you will need to be logged
into that account for the scheduled task to run.
Workspaces can be scheduled from the main workspace management dialog. The lower half
of this dialog is dedicated to display and management of scheduled workspaces (or workspace
jobs). The right hand side of the dialog shows the properties and status of the selected
workspace job.
You can edit an existing Job by selecting the job and hitting the Settings button, you can also
delete jobs with the delete button and start job execution with the Run Now button. Refresh
will refresh both the job list and the properties of the selected job.
Simply Select a workspace and press the Schedule button…..
You will be presented with the following Workspace Scheduler options dialog….

From here you can give the scheduled workspace job a name (that will appear in the
scheduled workspace job list), a comment and action, and select if the app should exit when
done. The workspace to process will be automatically selected for you however you can
modify it if you want.
NOTE: You can have workspaces scheduled by more than on Workspace Job, each with its
own schedule and actions.
Once you have entered this information, you can press the "Save Settings, Configure
Schedule and Security Button" . You will then be presented with a standard Windows Task
Scheduler options dialog where you can specify the schedule you want associated with this
Job.

When scheduled workspaces are executed, the title bar of the application will indicate the
current processing of the workspace job showing the Job Name, workspace being processes,
Action (process only, archive etc) and if the app will quit when done. In addition, if additional
jobs are submitted via schedule or cmd line, these jobs will be cued and processed after the
current job is complete. The title bar also indicates the number of jobs pending to be
processed.
Pending jobs can be viewed and canceled via the Pending Jobs Dialog box accessible from
the file menus…

This includes all xml files, the temp directory for that archive session, the image file cache for
html index generation, All output files used during the Archive process. Workspace folders are
stored below a user selectable workspaces folder. This folder can be change in the
preferences….
By default, workspaces will share a master index. However, within each workspace, the
master index option in the preferences can be modified to allow for independent master
indexes.
All jobs processed (via schedule or command line) have specific information logged about
them. These log files are stored in the install folder (usually in the program files folder). These
log files contain time stamped information about the job submittal and processing. All error
encounter are also logged. The format of a job submission in the log file will look like this...

1.3.15 External Control of Archive Creator
Archive Creator provides several different ways that an external application can be used to automation
your archive process.
The following interfaces are supported...
· Command Line Interface
· Drag and Drop capabilities
· DDE interface
© 2002-2003 PictureFlow LLC
Archive Creator Help File (click to expand)
108
· COM Automation Interface.
1.3.15.1 Command Line Interface
AC now supports command line execution to start the application with a specific
workspace and a few simple options…
/w Specifies a workspace name (if spaces are in the name, you must put quotes around the
name).
/a the action to perform on the workspace (load, process, or burn)
· load- only loads the workspace
· process-load and processes the workspace
· archive-loads, processes and starts archiving the workspace.
/n Specifies a Job name (if spaces are in the name, you must put quotes around the name.)
/q Quit after completed
/c Clear file selection tree
Any other strings found on the command line that are not proceeded by a / or are not data
parameters from a previous command line (such as the workspace name) are interpreted as
file paths to select. Spaces delimit the paths. If your path has a space in it your entire path
string must be quoted. For example, a command line of ...
/w MyWorkspace C:\file1.jpg "C:\My Photos\file2.jpg"
will first open the workspace called MyWorkspace and then select the two files specified.
NOTE: the second file has a space in the My Photos path and is quoted.
NOTE: Depending on the operating system. There are limits to how many characters can be
on a command line.
There are two other command line commands that determine how to operate on the file
paths that are present on the command line.
/u Instead of selecting the files, ensure they are unselected
/i Ignore any files specified on the command line
A command line to load and process a workspace named My Workspace would look like
this
© 2002-2003 PictureFlow LLC
109
Archive Creator
C:\Program Files\ArchiveCreator\ArchiveCreator.exe –w "My Workspace" –a process -q
This feature is handy to create shortcuts to load a specific workspace or do some processing
that you perform on a periodic basis.
by putting the appropriate text into a windows shortcut you can create desktop or start
menu shortcuts to perform specific functions. In the shortcut dialog simply enter the
command line string.
NOTE: Any paths or workspace names that have spaces must be surrounded by "" chars as in the
example above.
Archive Creator is a "Single Instance Application" meaning that only one instance of the application
will run at a time. If a command line is executed, and AC is already running, the currently running
instance of AC will receive the command line and process it when it is done with an process
currently executing. This allows you to execute multiple command lines, as each is received, it is
added to a queue and processed in the order it was received.
1.3.15.2 Drag and Drop
Drag and Drop On Shortcut
This command line functionality also allows the ability to "Drop" files on a shortcut to Archive
Creator and those files will be automatically selected in the tree.
© 2002-2003 PictureFlow LLC
Archive Creator Help File (click to expand)
110
To try this, create a shortcut to Archive Creator on your desktop. Then open Windows Explorer,
select a group of files and drag them to the archive creator shortcut. If Archive Creator is not
running it will start automatically and all the files dropped on it will be selected in the tree.
1.3.15.3 DDE Interface
Some applications allow the user to create custom tools or tool bar buttons to perform operations on
other external applications. Typically this is done via command line parameters or the use of DDE
commands. DDE is a technology that allows applications to dynamically exchange data. Archive
Creator supports the following DDE commands
SelectFile()-takes a string with a file path to select
UnSelectFile()-takes a string with a file path to unselect
CommandLine()-takes a string with the exact format of a standard command line string (ie anything
you can specify on the command line can be sent in here and processed as if it were a command
line string)
The only difference between issuing a DDE Commandline() command and a normal command line
is that all DDE functions are processed in full at the time they are received and not added to the
processing Queue as described above. Some applications allow for the use of DDE command and
typically DDE commands are processed far quicker than normal command line processing.
An example of integrating with another application is using the ThumbsPlus graphics file viewer and
organizer from Cerious Software, Inc. Click Here For Details
1.3.15.4 COM Automation Server
AC can be run as an com automation server. This is not normally supported but rough
documentation is included here if you wish to try running AC from another application.
For example, you can write a VB Script to start AC and open the workspace dialog like this...
Set ac = CreateObject("ArchiveCreator3.Application")
if (ac.BootComplete() = False) then
MsgBox "Waiting for AC to Boot.
completed."
end if
ac.ShowWorkspaceDlg false, true
The functions exposed by AC are listed below.

SelectInTree(FileFolderList, ClearFirst)
Selects the files in "FileFolderList" in the selection tree. FileFolderList is a string containing file
paths in quotes, separated by a comma. For example...
"C:\test\photo 1.jpg","C:\test\photo 2.jpg"
The list can also contain folder paths and then entire folder will be selected. The operation is
additive (ie the files will be added to the files already selected in the tree, unless the ClearFirst
Boolean flag is set.
UnSelectInTree(FileFolderList)
UnSelects the files in "FileFolderList" in the selection tree. FileFolderList is a string containing
file paths in quotes, separated by a comma. For example...
"C:\test\photo 1.jpg","C:\test\photo 2.jpg"
The list can also contain folder paths and then entire folder will be UnSelected.
ShowAC()
Brings the AC window to the front.
OpenWorkspace( WorkspaceName )
Opens a workspace specified by the WorkspaceName string.
StartProcess()
Starts the Layout Processing.
StartProcessAndDirectBurn()
Starts the DirectBurn Process, doing a layout process followed by a start Archive Operation.
BootComplete()
Returns a Boolean indicating if AC has completed the boot process.
MinimizeAC()

Installation Instructions
1. Exit Archive Creator and MediaPro3.
2. Run the AC3iViewScripts Installer to install the MediaPro3 Scripts used to control Archive
Creator or the AC3iViewToolbar installer to install the MediaPro3 workflow toolbar additions (or
install both if you wish). This will install the script files or toolbar files in your MediaPro3
installation folder to add menu the menu items to MediaPro3 for control of Archive Creator. This
installation is optional and only needed if you want direct control of Archive Creator from
MediaPro3. Run the installer and when you are prompted for the Destination folder (see below)
please ensure that the folder is pointing to the proper iView MediaPro3 install folder.
3. Install the Archive Creator 3 Plug in (Note, you must be running Archive Creator V3.5 or later).
This will install a plug in to Archive Creator to allow for indexing of completed archives into
MediaPro3. Run the installer (AC3iViewIndexer) and when you are prompted for the Destination
folder please ensure that the folder is pointing to the proper Archive Creator install folder.
1.3.16.2 Thumbs Plus
An example of integrating with another application is shown here using the ThumbsPlus graphics
file viewer and organizer from Cerious Software, Inc. Thumbs Plus allows the addition of custom
tool bar buttons to be added by the user. By creating 4 buttons you can browse your photos in
Thumbs Plus, transfer your selections to Archive Creator and Start the archive process without
ever leaving Thumbs Plus.

118
We will create 4 buttons
1-To start AC and Clear the File selection tree
2-To Add (select) files or folder selected in ThumbsPlus to the AC file selection
3-To Remove (unselect) files or folder selected in ThumbsPlus to the AC file selection
4-To Start Processing and the files selected.
The resulting thumbs plus tool bar will look like this..
The configuration of each button is a follows
1-Start AC and Clear File Selection List
This will start AC if it is not already running and clear the file selection list. You could also add a /w
workspacename to the command line string to open a specific workspace. The /i is there to force
AC to ignore any files that happen to be selected. It is always best to use the separate Select
button since it used the DDE interface and is more efficient and isn't limited by operating system
limits on command line length. The Tool tip sting is useful to help remember which button is which.
2-Select Files
© 2002-2003 PictureFlow LLC
119
Archive Creator
This will cause the currently selected files to be selected in AC. If no files are selected, then all the
files in the current folder will be selected in AC. This uses the DDE interface and is much faster and
more robust then using command lines. NOTE: This should be issued when AC is already running.
It will start AC automatically if it is not running but it will take much longer to process. If AC is
already running the processing time is almost instantaneous.
2-Unselect Files
As above except this will unselect the files.
2-Start Processing

This will take the files already selected and start the Layout and Image/Index processing.
Alternatively, you can use the following command line ...
/a archive /i
and you will execute a direct archive operation to Layout, Image/Index Process and start the archive
automatically.

What is Written to the Media
1.4.1
The Media Layout
This is what an Archive Creator CD looks like when viewed in windows Explorer.
The files and folders that are burned onto each of the CDs in the Archive Set are as follows:
Files:
· Read_Me.html - A file that explains the contents of the CD. (This paragraph is in the read_me file,
© 2002-2003 PictureFlow LLC
121
Archive Creator
in addition to some other information).
1.4.2
A Text Based Example
AC writes a mirror of the file structure that is on the hard drive to the Archive Set on the CDs. Here is
an example of a bunch of files in the archive from 2 different drives (U: and W:). And we will assume
that the drive letter of the CD (when we are reading it) is F:.
Hard drive:
U:\Photos\Personal\Vacations\LA\_files_to_archive
U:\Photos\Personal\Vacations\NY\_files_to_archive
U:\Photos\Personal\Vacations\Chicago\_files_to_archive
U:\Photos\Personal\Vacations\SF\Day\_files_to_archive
U:\Photos\Personal\Vacations\SF\Night\_files_to_archive
U:\Photos\Personal\Vacations\_files_to_archive
W:\Photos\Clients\Wedding\Ceremony\_files_to_archive
W:\Photos\Clients\Wedding\Reception\_files_to_archive
W:\Photos\Clients\Wedding\Party\_files_to_archive
W:\Photos\Clients\Wedding\Honeymoon\_files_to_archive
CD Archive:
F:\Photos\Clients\Wedding\Ceremony\_files_to_archive
F:\Photos\Clients\Wedding\Reception\_files_to_archive
F:\Photos\Clients\Wedding\Party\_files_to_archive
F:\Photos\Clients\Wedding\Honeymoon\_files_to_archive
F:\Photos\Personal\Vacations\LA\_files_to_archive
F:\Photos\Personal\Vacations\NY\_files_to_archive
F:\Photos\Personal\Vacations\Chicago\_files_to_archive
F:\Photos\Personal\Vacations\SF\Day\_files_to_archive
F:\Photos\Personal\Vacations\SF\Night\_files_to_archive
F:\Photos\Personal\Vacations\_files_to_archive
There is logic to handle multiple files/folders with the same name at the root of multiply selected drives.
For example, if there is a file called image1.jpg in W: and U:, they both cannot appear in the root of the
cd with the same name, so some name mangling goes on automatically and the user is presented with
a proposed name for the second file found with the same name (like image1_V.jpg) and can modify it
as needed. The same holds true for folders.
Lowest Common Folder Preference
© 2002-2003 PictureFlow LLC
Archive Creator Help File (click to expand)
122
With the "Use Lowest Common Folder" Preference set, the file structure eliminates folders that are
common to all files from each source drive and in many case reduces the folder depth. With this
Preference turned on the folder structure on the CD will look like this.
CD Archive:
F:\Ceremony\_files_to_archive
F:\Reception\_files_to_archive
F:\Party\_files_to_archive
F:\Honeymoon\_files_to_archive
F:\LA\_files_to_archive
F:\NY\_files_to_archive
F:\Chicago\_files_to_archive
F:\SF\Day\_files_to_archive
F:\SF\Night\_files_to_archive
F:\_files_in_U:\Photos\Personal\Vacations\
In essence this option allows a new root folder to be selected automatically based on the lowest level
folder that assures a unique file structure. There is also a manual override to this option.
Click here to see the above in a real life example.

Using The Master Index
1.5.1
Overview
The Archive Creator Master Index allows you to maintain an Index of Indexes on your hard drive to
make it easier to keep track of your Archive sets.
Each time that you burn an Archive Set, you can automatically copy the HTML Photo Index of that
Archive Set to a Master Folder on your hard drive, and add the Index of the new Archive Set to the
existing Master Index.
Here are the steps needed use this valuable feature.
© 2002-2003 PictureFlow LLC
Archive Creator Help File (click to expand)
132
Master Index Folder - You should select a folder to act as the "holder" for all of your Archive Set
HTML Photo Index files. The size of the Indexes that are created when creating an Archive set vary
greatly based on the number of files and the size and quality of the thumbnails and viewing images.
Choose the location for the Master Index Folder appropriately, so that there is enough room for the
indexes that you add over time. The location is set in the preferences dialog.
Note that in this case the folder is called "_ACStuff\MasterIndex" on the N: drive. All of the Index
folders will be stored in the folder called MasterIndex, or whatever name you set in the preferences.
Click on the set button to select or create a folder for the Master Index. In this help file when the
MasterIndex folder is mentioned, it is referring to whatever folder name you assign, and it does not
have to be "MasterIndex". For example you could set the MasterIndex folder to "d:\ArchiveIndexes".
Viewing the Master Index - You can view the Master Index by double-clicking on the "Index.html"
file within the MasterIndex folder, or by selecting the "View Master Index" menu item in the file menu
within Archive Creator.
In either case your default browser will open the Master Index file. It will look something like this..

Archive Creator
Each entry in the Master Index will open the HTML Photo Index of a previous archive when its link is
clicked.
Adding the current Archive Set Index to the Master Index - At any time after the Archive Set is
processed, the HTML Photo Index of the current Archive set can be added to the Master Index by
clicking on the "Add to Master Index" button on the Burn Page.
A dialog box is displayed that default the name of the Master Index entry to the first disc of the
Archive Set. In this case it is "JTBasketBall_01". For this example it was changed to "020601-Jesse
Basketball-NJ" so that the name is more descriptive. This will become the name of the Index folder
for this Archive that is stored in the Master Index folder.

The Archive Creator Master Index allows you to add Indexes from previous Archive Creator
Sessions, as well as HTML Photo Indexes created in other programs such as Photoshop, Breeze
Browser, Thumbs Plus, etc.
Adding an Index from a previous Archive Creator Session - Insert the CD or DVD that contains
the index into an appropriate drive. Go to the Verify Page and click on the "Add to Master Index"
button. Then proceed in the same manner as when adding the current HTML Photo Index.
Adding an Index created in another program - Any HTML Index can be added to the Master Index
by simply copying the folder that contains the Index to the MasterIndex folder. The only criteria is that
this new folder contains a file called "Index.html", that is the master page for this index. The name of
the folder will become the entry in the Master Index file.
In order to have this new Index become an entry in the Master Index, use the Regenerate menu item
in the File Menu within Archive Creator.

1.6.1
Archive Creator
General Preferences
Here are the preferences and their meaning when checked...
File Selection Tree Options
· Skip Network Drives - Mapped Network drives do not show up in the File Selection Tree. This is
useful because scanning for these drives takes time and when the option is set, the tree will load
much faster when the application is launched, or the Tree is refreshed.
· Skip CD-ROM Drives - CD-Rom drives do not show up in the File Selection Tree. This is useful
because scanning for these drives takes time and when the option is set, the tree will load much
faster when the application is launched, or the Tree is refreshed.
· Skip Removable Drives - Removable drives do not show up in the File Selection Tree. This is
useful because scanning for these drives takes time and when the option is set, the tree will load
much faster when the application is launched, or the Tree is refreshed. In some cases a USB or
Firewire drive will be categorized as a removable and in some cases not. So this will vary from
drive to drive and system to system.
· Auto Load Last FSL- When AC is launched the selections in the File Selection List that were in
place the last time AC was shot down will be re-set upon the launch of AC.
· Save FSL Only at Session End - The FSL will only be saved when AC is exited. Other wise if the
option is not set, the FSL will be saved when the Process Page is entered. By setting this option,
you can always return to the FSL from the last time AC was run by selecting Load Last FSL from

the File menu. So this functions as an undo, in that you can make changes to the FSL and return
to the way they were in your last AC session.
· Show Image Preview on Highlighted Node - When navigating through the tree, a preview image
will be show for each file that is highlighted as you use the arrow keys to navigate, If the option is
not set, only if you click on a file will the preview image be displayed. This is useful if you have a lot
of large images that take a long time to display, as they will only be loaded when you specifically
click on the filename
Root Folder Selection
.
· Use Lowest Common Folder (LCF) - AC will use the Lowest common folder that it can find
based on the selections in the FSL. This eliminates folder paths within a drive that are common to
all files in the drive. It organizes the files in a more compact format if it is possible. When
unchecked, the CD will exactly match the folder organization of the Hard drive within each
Source_d folder. Click Here for an example using the Lowest Common Folder
· Allow Manual Selection - This is a very advanced function that allows you to pick a specific LCF
within the paths that exist on a drive by drive basis. it is not yet described yet in the help file. This
option should generally not be set unless you have specific needs for it.
Workspace Index Folder
· Set - This allows you to set the folder where the workspaces are stored. This setting defaults to
C:\Program Files\ArchiveCreator\Workspaces.
Master Index Folder
· Set - This allows you to set the folder where the Master Index is stored. This setting defaults to
C:\Program Files\ArchiveCreator. This is a per workspace setting. Each workspace can have a
separate master index or on can be used for all.
Action when archiving to folder and folder exists
When archiving to a folder, and the folder already exists, you will normally be prompted with a option

Archive Creator
box to decide what to do. These setting allow you to pre-select the action that AC will take.
Misc Options
· Auto Correct Joliet Naming Exceptions - The CDs that AC produces adhere to the Joliet
naming standard so that they can be read on a wide variety of platforms. In those cases where a
filename does not conform to these standards, AC will automatically change the filename. An
example would be a filename that is longer than 64 characters would be truncated. If this option is
not set, these exceptions would still be trapped, but a dialog box would be displayed allowing you
to accept the correction that AC proposes, or make you own new name. In addition, you can
manually select the max length allowed for file and folder names.
· Auto Begin Processing - This allows the Processing to begin as soon as you go from the Setup
Page to the Process Page. If the option is not set, you will have to press the begin processing
button. If you normally like to go back and forth between pages to look at the layout tree or for
other reasons you may want to not set this option. Otherwise it should be set to make the process
as simple as possible.
· Make Media AutoRun if Index is Present - This adds special files to each CD so that when they
are inserted into a drive with auto-play enabled, the index will automatically be opened in the
default browser. If the option is not selected, or there is no index on a specific CD then the autorun
files will not be added.
· Media Wait Time - Normally this can be set at the default setting of 6 seconds. With some drives
this value should be reset to a higher number. The symptoms that would show up to indicate this
need is when a blank CD or DVD is inserted and AC reports that the disk is not blank, or other
various burn errors. This is caused by the drive not having enough time to properly mount the new
media and it sees the drive not being ready to write or verify the newly inserted media. If this is the
case, increase the Media Wait time until you get reliable results. This will vary from drive to drive
and according to the Windows version. If you have any burn problems, as a first trouble shooting
aid, set the Media Wait Time to 15 seconds to eliminate this as a cause of the problem. When the
problem is solved, this setting can be lowered to a setting that provides reliable results at all times.
This will vary from system to system and drive to drive.
· Don't Eject after Burn- This will prevent the system from opening the CD tray after a burn was
completed. When selected, the tray must be manually opened. This will prevent the tray from
being left open for extended periods if the operator is not present when the burn is complete.
CD/DVD
· Use ASPI Layer for Windows NT/2K/XP - In some systems AC will be more compatible with the
drive and system by using what is called the ASPI Layer. This is a system level interface to the
drives that burn the CDs or DVDs. This options should be tried if there are problems in burning
© 2002-2003 PictureFlow LLC
Archive Creator Help File (click to expand)
142
discs. It will take effect the next time that AC is run, so you must exit AC and then restart it for it to
be in effect. Up to date ASPI drivers must also be present on your system. Details about using the
ASPI layer can be read about by clicking here.
· DVD High Compatibility Mode - Some older DVD drives will not read discs that have less than
1GB of data written on them. With this preference checked, each DVD that is burned will be filled
out to 1GB even if the data that has been selected is less than 1GB.
· Burn Priority High - With this option checked, the Archive Creator program is assigned a High
priority within Windows. This assures that the PC processor spends the maximum amout of time
working on AC processes, which assures the best burn integrity. The downside is that if other
applications are used, they do not receive a lot of processor "time" and therefore can run in a slow
or chunky manner. By unchecking this option, AC receives the "Normal" processor time, and other
applications will run more smoothly. The downside is that with less time being given to AC, the
chance of Under-Run errors (on CD drives without under-run protection) is greater, which might
result in a coaster. With drives that have Under-Run protection, more "burn-proof" gaps or links
might be written, which makes the disc harder to read and therefore less robust as an archive.
With DVDs or if other applications are not used, these issues are less important. So in general, it
is OK to disable this option if you have a drive with under-run error protection, your system is fast
enough, and if you do not use other processor intensive applications during a burn.
· Smooth-Burn Buffer - Archive Creator has a special memory buffer that in effect extends the
small buffer that is found on CD and DVD drives. By using the AC Smooth-Burn buffer, better burn
results can be achieved. Guidelines for setting the proper amount of memory are presented when
you click the Smooth-Burn buffer. If you have the available memory in your PC, the buffer should
be set as high as practical, while adhering to the guidelines.

CD Burning Hints
Updated 30 Dec 2002
In the course of developing AC over the past months, we have done a lot of research into CD
technology and we have burned a lot (I mean a lot) of CDs. There is a lot of information available on
CD Drives, and CDR media, but I have found that there is no definitive source for this information, and
the more you read, the more you realize that there are many answers to the obvious questions that
arise...not specific "this is best" or "that is best answers". So with this in mind I will present some
obvious questions and answers based on my personal experience of testing and research. This was
current as of the date at the top...things can change.
Why Should I Believe Your Answers?
You shouldn't. What I suggest that you do, is read what I have learned and use it as guidelines when
you make your decisions about CD and CD-R issues.
What is the best CDR media?
I don't know. But I can tell you the following. With rare exception, you are buying blind when you buy
CD-R media. There are a limited number of factories and plants and they sell to and through a very
large number of brand labels and distribution channels. So when you buy a Memorex disk today (I only
use them as an example), you can buy the very same Memorex part number tomorrow and not get the
same disk. Marketing companies buy their disks from various suppliers (who buy from various
© 2002-2003 PictureFlow LLC
Archive Creator Help File (click to expand)
146
factories) and there is little guarantee that you will getting the same disk twice.
I have found that there are some exceptions. For example, all Mitsui disks are made by Mitsui (Mitsui
Advanced Media, Inc). And all Verbatim disks are made by their parent company Mitsubishi. These 2
disks use different dye technologies and depending on your drive one might perform better than the
other. There are also different factories that makes these disks, so the disks can still vary from batch to
batch.
There is information written into each blank CD-R which tells the manufacturer of the disk and the type
of dye that is used, but even this information is not accurate because the information is embedded in
the stamper than makes the CD-R and these stampers can move from factory to factory, and really not
indicate the true manufacturer of the disk.
So what CD-R media should I use?
In my tests on my several drives, I have found that the Mitsui disks give me the best and most
consistent results. They are also the most expensive disks. Are these the best for you? I would suggest
that you test them and others and decide for yourself. Read on to find out how.
What is the best CD-R drive?
I don't know. But I do know that I have gotten great results from very inexpensive drives as well as very
expensive drives. What are great results? See below. The things to look for when buying a drive (in
terms of features) are the write and read speeds, and the under-run prevention technology that is used
to prevent Buffer Under-run Errors. To find out how to best prevent the chance of getting under-run
errors, click here.
The best drive would have the following combination of attributes..
· Low price
· Fast Read and Write Speeds
· Burn-Proof Technology
· Have a great tolerance for all types of media
· Burn disks that are readable in all other CDR and CD drives after a long period of time
Some of these factors you can easily confirm, but the last and most important one you can't. You have
no way of knowing how well the CD-Rs that you burn will be read in some unknown drive 2, 5, 10, or 20
years from now. My recommendation is to pick a drive in your price range that has Burn-Proof
Technology. Read and Write speeds are not that important because in reality the effective speeds that
you can achieve are rarely those of the drive unless your computer is very optimized. So a drive that is
24X-40X should be more than enough in most situations. If you want the bleeding edge, than go for the
48X or 52X drive, but there is no guarantee that the drives will meet these numbers (meaning that your
computer can keep up with the drive), and there is also no guarantee that a fast drive will work as well
as a slower rated drive at realistic burn speeds (24X to 40X).
What is Burn-Proof Technology ?
Burn-Proof is a technology by Sanyo that allows the disk to run out of data, stop writing, and then when
the data buffer is full again, begin writing again, thereby saving the disk from being a coaster. There
are several versions of this type of technology made and/or marketed by a variety of manufacturers. I
have personally used Burn-Proof, Quick-Link (Ricoh), Burn-Safe (Sony) and have found them, to work
equally well. There are a number of others, and I have not read of any that do not seem to do the job.
There are some similar sounding technologies, that sound like these, but in fact are just better
buffering scheme, and on those drives the data can still run out and the disk will become a coaster. So
be careful that the drive that you use, has a real "data-linking" technology that prevents under-run
errors from rendering a disk as useless. And realize that the brand name that a disk drive is marketed
under, is no guarantee that the drive mechanism was made by that brand. I'm not saying that this is a
bad thing, but just a note, that like CD media, the brand is not necessarily an indication of a
manufacturer.

DVD Media Guide
Archive Creator supports the following DVD formats..
·
·
·
·
DVD-R
DVD-RW
DVD+R
DVD+RW
We recommend DVD+R for proper archive storage. The RW formats (in both CD and DVD) are not
designed for long term reliable archiving of data and should only be used as interim archive media
for short term usage. The +R standard seems to be gaining popularity and is reported to be a more
reliable medium.

Whats New in Version 3.5
New Features In V3.5 since the V3.04 release.
MDS (Multi Drive Sequential) Burn functionality. In the past, burners were very costly
and it was difficult to have more than one or two burners attached to a system. With the burner
costs going down and the advent of Firewire and USB burners it is relatively cost effective and
simple to support many burners on a single system. MDS Burn allows you to take advantage of
this by using multiple burners (sequentially) to burn your multi disk archives. Click Here for Details
File Distribution for Digital Asset Management Archiving (DAM Bucket
Archiving)
Some Digital Asset Management techniques require storing your files in archivable sized buckets
(folders). Archive Creator 3 can be used to help distribute files into DAM folder buckets. You
simple select the file you want distributed, configure the target folder bucket size and process it.
Archive Creator will either move or copy the files into the folder buckets, even preserving the
exiting folder hierarchy within the archive buckets and a unique bucket back full feature.

iView MediaPro3 Integration Module. There is an integration module that can be
installed to enable a seamless archiving work flow between IView Media Pro 3 (Windows Only)
and Archive Creator. Once installed, from within the IView application you can launch Archive
Creator, open a workspace, select files or folders to be archived, manage your selection, start and
burn your archive. All without leaving iView! After the archive is verified, Archive Creator will even
automatically catalog your archive in IView so you will always know when, how many times and on
which media a photo was archived. Click Here for Details
Thumbs Plus Integration Instructions. ThumbsPlus graphics file viewer and organizer
from Cerious Software, Inc. allows the addition of custom tool bar buttons to be added by the user.
By creating 4 buttons you can browse your photos in Thumbs Plus, transfer your selections to
Archive Creator and Start the archive process without ever leaving Thumbs
Plus.Click Here for Details
DVD9 Dual Layer Support. A new Media Target was added to the drop down on the file
selection page (DVD9 Dual Layer). Enhanced Burning support for dual layer dvds incorporated.
NOTE: You MUST ensure that you have the latest firmware burned on your drive. Dual layer
capability on burners is very new and even if you just received your new burner ensure that it has
the latest firmware on it. Many problems are resolved by just updating the drive firmware, even if it
works with a different program.
Blu-ray Disc Support. Preliminary Blu-ray disc support (single layer (25 gig)) . NOTE: THIS
FEATURE IS UNTESTED. USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. IT IS TO BE CONSIDERED
UNSUPPORTED HOWEVER WE WILL MAKE AN EFFORT TO CORRECT ANY ISSUES YOU
MAY MAY FIND IF YOU CHOOSE TO TEST IT!!
Number of Copies. There is now a new option on the Archive Page to allow you to specify the
number of copes of the discs to burn. AC will burn the specified number of copies of each disc
before continuing to the next disc in the archive. The number of copies can be changed at any
time during the burn. Click Here for Details
Archive Report. There is now a new tab on the archive page that provides a printable Archive
History Report. The report shows when the session started, when each volume was processed,
which burner it was burned on, whether it was verified or not, the final speed of the burn, and the
result of the entire Archive session. The report can be cleared, saved to disc as a text file or

printed. There is also an auto scroll option to allow the list to always show the latest entry. All
errors, cancellations etc are logged to the report as well. Click Here for Details
Device Status. There is now a new tab on the archive page that provides a real time device
status display. This display shows the current status of all your burners, including current state,
media installed, supported media and more. Click Here for Details
Date/Time filter option. In addition to filtering your file selection on extension or archive bit
state, you can now filter on creation date-time and/or modification date-time. AC even keeps track
of your last archive date-time for each workspace and can be configured to automatically filter on
files created or modified after you last archive! Click Here for Details
Archive Sorting Option. In the past all archive files and folders were sorted alphabetically.
Now you have the option to sort your archive by Name, Creation Date, Modification Date both
Ascending or Descending. This is very handy when a folder contains files taken from different
cameras (with different base names) or the files have been renamed due to post processing. Even
with different names, the files can be sorted as needed. The sorting selected is also reflected in
the HTML index. Click Here for Details
New Preview HTML Index Setting Function. The Preview HTML Index Setting function on
the file selection page has been modified to show the index as if it were the first disc burned. As
such it will now show the File/Folder buttons.
Smaller Folder/File open buttons on the index. On the html index, the image icons for the
Open File and Open Folder buttons that appear on the html index for a burned disc have been
reduced in width to allow for smaller thumbnails. This effects all styles except Classic, and Greys.
Persistent Drive Speed Selections. AC now saves your burn speed selections. For each
drive, AC now stores the selected drive speed of your last burn for each media type. When new
media is inserted or a new drive is selected, AC will automatically set the burn speed to the burn
speed used the last time you burned that type of media on that particular drive. You can always
override it of course.
Enhanced burner support. Update cd/dvd burning support.

Drive Compatability
AC is compatible with most recent CD/DVD drives. The following is a list of old drives that are NOT
supported. Please try the evaluation version of Archive Creator to ensure that your CD drive is
supported.
Unsupported Drives
These drives have proprietary command sets and are not currently supported. They also are
typically very old and are very limited in capabilities compared to today's newer drives. We
recommend replacing these drives, as they do not always work well with the new Windows operating
systems. Don't worry, the list is short. Also keep in mind that these drives have not been in
production for some time, and many are duplicate OEM drives - e.g. Some legacy Smart & Friendly
drives (below) are OEM versions of the legacy Sony drives (below).

Drives Without Burn-Proof Type Technology
CD Drives that do not support the "Link" or "Burn-Proof" type technologies, are not recommended for
use with Archive Creator. They can be used, but the chance or Under-Run errors are always
present. If you attempt to use a drive like this be sure to read Preventing Under-Run Errors.
Firmware Updates
Always ensure that the CD or DVD drive that you are using has the latest firmware installed. This is
especially true with new DVD drives.

Preventing Under-run Errors
Using a Drive with Burn-Proof Technology
The best way to prevent Buffer Under-Run Errors is to use a drive that use Burn-Proof Technology.
These drives prevent Buffer Under-Run Errors by having the capability to run out of data, and then
resume writing onto the CD-R again when additional data is available again. In almost all cases, a
Buffer Under-Run Errors can be prevented, regardless of the lack of speed of the computer. However,
even when using a drive with Burn-Proof Technology it is wise to select a speed that prevents the
internal data buffer of the drive to get to an empty state for most of the burn. Let the Burn-Proof
Technology be a safety net, rather than the normal course of the burn. So we recommend setting your
drive speed such that the data buffer (as indicated on the burn screen in Write Buffer percentage) is
not always cycling from 0 and back up to full. There is no speed advantage to setting the drive to the
fastest speed if the computer cannot keep up with it. Through trial and errors, experiment to set the
drive speed such that the buffer remains as full as possible for most of the time. There is no problem if
the buffer falls to 0 from time to time, but if it is always falling to 0, then the burn speed should be
reduced. This is affected by the media you use, so a specific setting is just valid for a specific media
type and batch. Also these tests can be done with the "Test Burn" mode engaged so that disks do not
need to be wasted during the test process.
Using a Drive without Burn-Proof Technology
If your CD Burner does not have Burn-Proof Technology then it is probable that Buffer Under-Run
Errors will occur unless certain precautions are taken. Here are some suggestions to minimize the
chance for Buffer Under-Run Errors.
· Quit all other programs other than Archive Creator.
· Make sure that screen savers, and anti-virus programs are not running
· Always use the "Cache Files to HD" option. (there must be space on the system drive to hold the
data, which is the size of each CD that you are burning)
· Do not make archives from files that are on a Network Drive
· Make sure that the CD-Burner and your Hard drive are configured to use DMA, if they have that
feature (check your documentation). This is usually configured in the Device Manager of Windows
(either in the CD-Rom section or the IDE controller section)
· Record at a slow speed. Most computers (even fast ones) cannot support the burning of CD-Rs
above 12X without Burn-Proof Technology.
· If you wish to test an Archive Set before you attempt to burn it, you can set the burn screen to test
mode, insert a blank CD-R (it will not be written to) and hit the Write Disks button. The process will
proceed from disk to disk (skipping verification even if it is turned on). If any Buffer Under-Run
Errors will occur when you actually burn the CD-Rs they will also show up during this test. So you
can test the entire Archive set for Buffer Under-Run Errors in an unattended mode, and then
return and actually burn the Archive Set to the CD-Rs. If the test fails, lower the CD Burner speed
and try again.

Supported Image File Types
Note that with the exception of system files or files that are in use, Archive Creator will
archive just about any file on your Windows hard drive. The discussion of formats supported
relates to preview images and the creation of thumbnails and viewing images.
The following images types are generally supported in the creation of thumbnails and viewing
images. The amount of support for a specific type can vary in terms of rotation, size, purity of
color, or even supporting the complete spec of a specific format at all. Also formats (like
Photoshop/PSD) are changing all the time with each version of their software, so support can
vary based on the version of software that created the file.
Although we generally support the following formats, there can be no assurance that any
specific file will be supported, or that future versions of a format will be supported. To be sure
that a specific file format is supported to the level that you require, you should test your
specific files using the Archive Creator Evaluation version before you purchase AC.
Kodak, Nikon and Canon RAW file support requires free support software that is available for
download from our web site.
