A LETTER FROM THE PASTOR
My dear brothers and sisters in our risen Lord Jesus Christ,
The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life.
(Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1324)
This week is the fourth week of our homily series on the Bread of Life discourse found in the sixth chapter of St. John’s gospel. Using the word “bread” as an acronym, each week is being focused as follows:
July 26 – Bounty… we are here because of God’s generosity
August 2 – Recognition… we are here because of more than just material things
August 9 – Eternity… we are here because God’s desire to be with us forever
This week, August 16 – Affinity… we are here because we want to be like God
August 23 – Discipleship… we are here because there is no other place for us
If you miss any week of the series, perhaps you might take the time to listen to Sunday homilies archived on “StreamSpot”
on the parish website so that you might experience the entire five-week homily series. And, a special feature continues as
we are having fellowship after Mass throughout the Bread of Life discourse!
This weekend we celebrate our patronal solemnity. Fr. Maximilian Kolbe was martyred on August 14, 1941 at Auschwitz.
The Church allows for “local” solemnities (i.e. the patronal solemnity and the anniversary of a church dedication) to be
transferred to Sundays in Ordinary Time so that entire communities can celebrate as best they can. Both of these days are
ones in which we can take great pride in our parish and celebrate “who we are” as the Church (members of the body of
Christ under the patronage of St. Maximilian Kolbe) gathered in a church where we are nourished by Word and Sacrament.
I would like to say THANK YOU personally for your response to our recent Stewardship Renewal. As the most important
part of our stewardship, I am especially grateful for all the commitments to time in prayer – there is no better time spent
than in nurturing our relationship with our Lord! The commitments to talent (participating in a parish ministry, activity or
organization) and treasure (financial support of the missions of both the parish and the Church) are also very, very encouraging! Thanks to everyone for your generous sharing from your first-fruits of what our generous God has given us! (And,
if you have not yet responded to the Stewardship Renewal and have yet to fill out your commitment card, you are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. Thanks!)
That’s all for now – God bless one and all!
Fr. Geoff
From Fr. Matt
I am writing to say good-bye and thank you to everyone at St. Maximilian Kolbe for their kind and warm welcome to me. I
have decided after much prayer and discernment to begin a different assignment as a Jesuit priest on the staff of Colombiere
Center which is where Jesuit priests and brothers from the Midwest region go to live their final years. I will be assisting the
more than 60 Jesuits at the center with their day to day life and serving as a priest with and for them. I begin my new
assignment on August 17. I am very grateful for the time I was given here at St. Maximilian to see a vibrant parish up close
and to experience the life of a diocesan parish priest in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. My special thanks to Father Geoff
and the parish staff for all they did for me and also a great thanks to all the parishioners at St. Maximilian. I will remember
you all in my prayers and Masses.
Very truly yours in Christ,
Father Matthew T. Gamber, SJ
An Addendum from FR. GEOFF
When Fr. Matt arrived, we knew he was discerning the possibility of diocesan priesthood. Even though he was only here
for six weeks, I am saddened by his departure. I am very grateful for his willingness to “pinch hit” so wonderfully in
preaching our Bread of Life discourse and his willingness to celebrate the sacraments for our community. I can assure him
of my continued prayers and support, as well as those of the parish, as he begins this new chapter in his ministry as a Jesuit
priest “ad multos annos!” (For many years!)

human life and religious freedom, all are encouraged to pray the

we will focus on one dynamic that affects families in our day and age.

OUTREACH
SERVING GOD, MINISTERING TO OTHERS: HELP SACRAMENTALLY UNITE OUR SICK TO CHRIST
Please consider taking communion to our homebound, nursing homes, or local hospital. Time
commitment varies: weekday and weekend hours – 1 ½ to 2 hours, once a month or more
often if you like. You can choose either parishioners in their private homes, parishioners at
Doverwood, Birchwood, or Catholic patients at West Chester Hospital. Training is August, 25
from 7:00-8:30 PM in the parish office. To RSVP: Call Holly Moran, 777-4322, 116
Pastoral Care of the Sick #73 says:
In bringing Communion to them the Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion represents
Christ and manifests faith and charity on behalf of the whole community toward those who
cannot be present at the Eucharist.
LEARN, GROW AND SERVE BY BECOMING A STEPHEN MINISTER
Do you have gifts for caring, encouragement, and listening? If so, please prayerfully
consider becoming a Stephen Minister. St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish will be training another
class of Stephen Ministers in the near future. Stephen Ministers provide emotional and
spiritual support and care to people who are going through a difficult time, such as divorce,
grief, hospitalization, unemployment, terminal illness, relocation, chronic illness, or
loneliness. To find out more about becoming a Stephen Minister or how you or someone
you know could be matched with a Stephen Minister, talk with one of our Stephen Ministry
Leaders confidentially: Please contact Holly Moran through our Parish office 513-7774322 or email at [email protected].

OUTREACH
9 MONTHS WITH CHRIST IN THE WOMB-WEEK 17
Jesus is developing taste buds this week. Mary is starting to feel as though things must be
crammed pretty tight insider her. Jesus has learned how to run his hand against his cheek. He likes
the sensation and does it a lot. Jesus of the womb, hear our prayers!
Please join us every Wednesday at 11:00 AM in the chapel for our weekly rosary and to prayerfully visualize the
development of the Divine Body of Jesus within His mother’s cherished womb.
12:00 NOON SENSORY NEEDS MASS AT ST. MAX
Children learn mostly by doing. They also learn by watching what their parents do. In
essence, your children are paying attention to you. When you attend church as a family
you are sending a very concrete and strong message to your child about who they are and
who their family is. They know that they go to church, and that Mom and Dad do, too.
However, often times, families with a member that has special needs makes attending Mass
extremely difficult for many reasons. Sometimes, the outward behaviors are just too
overwhelming for the parents, so they "divide and conquer" by going to separate Masses, at
times keeping the child home.
The 12:00 Noon Sensory Needs Mass in St. Max’s conference room gives the parents and family another choice. They
are welcome to come as a family and worship with other families who share similar situations. Rather than have the family
divide, we invite all the families to come together and share in the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. It
takes place in the conference room each Sunday at 12:00 Noon, as well as Christmas and Easter.
“Let the children come to me and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Luke 18:16

Jr. High 1x1 Movie Critique for “Elf”
For our Christmas in July celebration we watched Elf and then created Elf breakfasts at our spaghetti ‘bar’ complete with
sugared maple syrup, sprinkles, mini-marshmallows, chocolate syrup, M&M's, and Frosted Chocolate Fudge Pop-Tarts.
We gave this movie 3 of 5 crosses in our NEW AND IMPROVED religion category! First, we looked at
the movie for elements of the Trinity. Although this movie has elves working in Santa’s workshop, we
didn’t see a connection between God as creator and a creation theme in this movie. We did however see
several characters acting in a ‘saving’ role: Santa, Papa Elf, Jovie and Buddy. But the movie fell short
for us again and we didn’t find characters with elements of God as Holy Spirit, our advocate and guide.
When we looked at the movie to see if we could identify communities that came together to accomplish
something good, we found several. The Hobb’s family, who at first were absorbed more in their work
than in their family, became more of a family toward the end of the movie and we even see them singing
Christmas carols together in the park. The elves were a community. The mail room gang was a fun
community who made sure to balance business with pleasure! Finally, we looked for elements of ritual
in the movie that help the community grow stronger. The obvious ritual in this movie is preparing for
Christmas. Elf tells everyone to spread Christmas cheer by singing loudly, he decorates Gimble’s
department store, and pretty much does everything with a Christmas spin to it…including preparing
breakfast with way too much syrup.
†††††
We gave this movie 0 of 5 thumbs down in the UNNECESSARY STUFF category. There was no bad
language, immodest dress, excessive violence, and it didn’t advocate worship of anything contrary to
God.

We gave this movie 4 of 5 stars in the GOOD MOVIE category. It told a good story, had characters we
could relate to, kept our interest and was unique, we’d watch it again and recommend it to others.
Recommended audience - We recommend this movie for anyone, families, teens and adults. Plus, we
think it’s appropriate to watch anytime!

HIGH SCHOOL MINISTRY
~Save the date for the fall High School Youth Ministry kick-off event on Sunday, August 30 in the Gym,7:00-9:00 PM
~Sign ups for HomeLife Groups: HomeLife groups are an amazing opportunity for teens in high school. These small
communities of teens come together regularly to talk about life and faith. This is not a class, but a group of friends growing
together with the help of mentors. HomeLife groups spend time tackling tough issues, sharing life experiences, supporting
each other; participating in service, and growing deeper in faith and prayer. We encourage all teens of the parish to
participate. HomeLife groups will begin meeting in September so sign up now by contacting Zack.

A Marriage Moment
"...Live not as foolish persons, but as wise." (Ephesians 5:15) Dare you share with your beloved a foolish thing you've done
during your life? More importantly, share one way that you see your beloved as wise (other than marrying you).
