Université de Bretagne Occidentale (UBO) is located ”at the
end of the earth” according to some, or ‘‘at the entrance to
Europe’’ according to others. In any case, UBO is a university
at the forefront, oriented toward the open sea and open to
the world, to all worlds: far off places but also all socioeconomical classes.
Anticipating
the
law
on

autonomy
and
responsibilities, UBO has reworked its structure, shaped its
courses for professional needs, consolidated its research
and is implementing an approach of supporting all its
communities. These few pages will give an insight into
the Université de Bretagne Occidentale and its activity.

With almost 2,400 employees,
the university is the 5th biggest
employer in the Brest urban

year. Its objective is to take into consideration the
uniqueness of each and everyone, support him or her
throughout training courses and provide guidance

At UBO, 70% of the teaching staff are lecturerresearchers and 30% are contributors from the world
of business. The excellent quality of teaching at UBO
stems from this constant cohabitation of research
and the professional world. In addition to outside
contributors, the professionalisation of our training
courses also draws from the development of a broadranging network of partners, who offer our students,
amongst other things, the possibility of first-rate

In the face of a globalizing labour market, knowledge
of languages is an objective that UBO sets out for

UBO is a human-sized university and sets a premium
on work in small groups and contact with the
teaching staff, as illustrated through schemes like
its individual tutoring programme that starts at the
beginning of every student’s first year at University.
The tutoring is conducted by students nearing the
end of their courses and teaching staff.
Furthermore, several other schemes have been
implemented to assist our students throughout their
studies and to help them look for their first jobs.
The ‘plan licence’: Set up in September 2008,

we won the “JEC Innovation Award” for

has a long and rich history. The banking
market expanded massively during
the 1970’s, and recruitment followed
accordingly. The development of the
market gave rise to a need for training

Elliptika: a start -up
made in UBO !

Elliptika was founded in February 2008 by
two doctors from UBO and by three researchers
from the LAB-STICC laboratory (formerly the
Electronics and Telecommunications Systems
Laboratory). By combining different skills in
Mathematics and electronics the team at Elliptika
developed innovative and miniaturised microwave
frequency filtering solutions, which are now used in
many sectors: space, defence, telecommunications
for the general public (mobile telephony, etc.).
Elliptika already boasts more than 10 customers
Including Thalès and CNES (French Space Agency).
For the founders of Elliptika, UBO was a veritable
pillar for the creation of our company. The provision
of premises near to the LABSTICC laboratory and
the advice and support right throughout the
development and progression of the project
were a real bonus in helping us start up our

“We work in the Laboratoire Domaines
Océaniques (Ocean Domains Laboratory)
at the IUEM on geophysical imaging. In
particular, we use electro-magnetics as
a tool for scanning substrates. We have
developed a tri-dimensional imaging
method that enables us to define the
nature of a substrate located at either
several metres or several kilometres
in depth. This method is of interest
to many domains since it allows the
natural resources of substrates at a
given location to be determined, enables
identification of surface pollution and
monitoring of its development, provides
information on the nature of sub-soils in
the case of sanitary drainage works, etc.
The opportunities for this technology
are therefore plentiful:civil engineering,
hydrology, storage, natural resources,
geothermics, etc. Today, we are planning
to set up a consulting firm and are
already working on the industrialisation
of our product and its development”.
“All research in humanities and social
sciences are oriented towards a same
and single goal: that of understanding
man, societies and organisations. The
research methods used in this domain
are mainly of two types:field surveys
in contact with the actual reality of the
situation and documentary research
on historic documents corpus, images,
films, etc.
The final aim of this research is to publish
articles and works. At UBO, promotion
of research into humanities and social
sciences is very important.
In fact, we organise several international
conferences each year and we enter into
many research contracts with regional
authorities, companies or associations
for performance of surveys, heritage
studies, market research, etc.”
