2013 COLLECTION - Manitobah Mukluks
2013 COLLECTION Every Manitobah purchase helps us make a bigger local impact. As a Thank You for consumers who register their Manitobah product online, we make an additional investment into the local community program of THEIR choice. manitobah.ca/JoinUs It’s our way of saying Thank You to our consumers for their purchase. The Walk With Us program lets them help direct our local community investments. - Sean McCormick CEO - Manitobah Mukluks Images and text courtesy of Bata Shoe Museum, Toronto, Canada 2 Our Story Our story begins in Canada thousands of years ago, when our ancestors created mukluks and moccasins using distinctive leather, furs and adornment to reflect their individual customs and culture. Today as Métis we continue this tradition by combining the craftsmanship and artistry of our ancestors with modern materials and techniques to create truly timeless footwear – as functional as it is beautiful. Stitch by stitch, bead by bead, we tell the story of our People. ABORIGINAL OWNED PROUDLY CANADIAN Images and text courtesy of Bata Shoe Museum, Toronto, Canada 33 e b , h c t i t s y b h c t i t S o f o y r o t s e h t l l e t we Manitobah History Throughout history, Canada’s First Peoples wore mukluks and moccasins as they thrived in harmony with nature. As European settlers arrived, they too adopted our traditional footwear as a necessary tool for survival. 1870 1630 The North American fur trade leads to the birth of a new people – the Métis. Manitoba becomes a province of Canada; Métis artisans supply handmade goods for emerging markets. 1630 - 1870 The Métis establish their own identity, with traits of both Aboriginal and European people. 4 1990 Métis siblings Sean and Heather McCormick establish a trading post in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Aboriginal artisans trade handmade mukluks and moccasins for the McCormicks’ tanned leather skins and furs. , d a e b y b ead . e l p o e P our Today Manitobah partners with Vibram® to develop a high-abrasion sole for the urban market and launches a project to create business-building partnerships with elders and artists in Aboriginal communities. 2008 Manitobah Mukluks’ global brand office is established in Canada’s Capital Region. International sales partnerships are created to meet growing demand. 1997 The McCormicks register a Canadian corporation and begin manufacturing Aboriginal footwear. 2006 Hollywood stars are photographed wearing the company’s products, creating interest from all corners of the world. 5 Our Sole When it came time to develop footwear for the city, we challenged Vibram®, the world leader in high-performance rubber soles, to design a sole that could withstand the effects of cold and high-abrasion urban environments (min. 150 NBS). Vibram® used 70 years of history and a rugged TC1 compound to provide a durable, low-profile sole that could also serve as a canvas for an Aboriginal story. Images and text courtesy of Bata Shoe Museum, Toronto, Canada Together we build quality and tradition in every step. 6 Art of our sole 1 Tipi Vibram ® 1 1 The Sky represents life-giving water falling as rain and snow. 2 To the right are the western mountains. 3 Trees to the left of the tipi represent the Woodland People. 4 This is the doorway we walk through together as modern hunter-gatherers. 5 Fire tells us our People will always survive. Prairie plains behind are home to the Great Horse and Buffalo People. 6 The swirling Four Winds cleanse as the Sun circles our Mother Earth. 2 3 2 4 5 6 3 Turtle Vibram ® 1 A whole circle connects the life energy, yet it is divided to show man and woman, mother and father, the spirit world and the physical world. 2 Throughout the sky, flowing lines represent energy flowing through all beings. 3 Turtle swims towards the prairie grasses that have always sustained life. 4 Legends speak of Turtle Island, a land created when a clump of soil on Turtle’s shell grew into what we now call North America. Markings on Turtle’s back represent the moon cycles. 4 Images and text courtesy of Bata Shoe Museum, Toronto, Canada Sole Sole About the Artist Heather Steppler Wolf Clan, Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation Heather Steppler’s maternal ancestors were musically, artistically and spiritually inclined and include traditional birch bark biters and medicine women. About the Artist Rosa Scribe e r Cree Nation, Norway House Hailing from Norway House, Cree Nation (population of 5,000), Rosa Scribe is a soft-spoken and inspirational mukluk Cree artist. Perfecting her craft for over 25 years, Rosa learnt the techniques of the mukluk art from her grandmother. Today, Rosa is a teacher at University College of the North, instructing adult students the art of the mukluk. Now she stands as one of the only artists in her community who carries that unique knowledge from her ancestors. Not wanting the art to die out, Rosa began teaching others in her community how to bead and sew so she could help keep the art alive. When we found out that Rosa was using her own Storyboot money to buy materials and fund her teaching program at University College of the North, we decided to get more involved. The Kanada collection reflects our commitment and our shared vision of keeping traditions alive. $1 from every Kanada Mukluk and Moccasin sold, will go directly to Rosa so she can continue teaching arts and crafts in her community BEST SELLER NEW 2013 Ladies 5-11, Mens 6-13 Sheepskin Shearling 38.1cm (15”) Tipi Vibram® Suede, Rabbit Fur CHOCOLATE TAN BLACK Vibram: 2010637 Vibram: 2010607 Vibram: 2010602 Vibram: 2010606 KANADA MOCCASIN BEST SELLER Beadwork pattern designed by Rosa Sribe Sizing: Foot Lining: Sole: Exterior: INDOOR CHARCOAL CHARCOAL CHOCOLATE TAN BLACK Ladies 5-11, Mens 6-13 Fleece Suede Suede, Rabbit Fur CHOCOLATE TAN BLACK Suede: 2020337 Suede: 2020307 Suede: 2020302 Suede: 2020306 MADE IN CANADA COLLECTION 13 LOUIE GONG Louie Gong (Nooksack) was raised by his grandparents in Ruskin B.C. and the Nooksack tribal community. As a small child living in a home with no running water, he would help his Chinese grandpa collect buckets of drinking water from a nearby spring and then help his Native grandma (Nooksack, Squamish) make bannock on their Coleman camp stove. Although these early experiences lie in stark contrast with his astonishing success, Louie would tell you that they guide his decisions as an educator, nationally recognized mixed race activist, and founder of Eighth Generation – where he merges influences from his mixed heritage and urban environment to design his highly sought-after, hand-drawn custom shoes. By merging the traditional and contemporary, you can have a strong cultural identity while still exploring popular culture and style. eighthgeneration.com - Louie Gong Images and text courtesy of Bata Shoe Museum, Toronto, Canada 30 14 MADE IN CANADA COLLECTION - Louie Gong L.G. Initially, the Hudson’s Bay Company (the British fur trading company) discouraged unions between their fur traders and Native women, while The Northwest Company (the French fur trading company) supported such marriages. Despite their reluctance to accept these cross-culture marriages, there was not a lot that the Hudson’s Bay Company could have done to stop them. LOCAL COMMITMENT. Thanks to our incredible global community, Manitobah Mukluks has grown. To accommodate our growth, we’ve also found global partners to help us produce some of our products internationally. I believe this expansion in our production will lead to a bigger local impact. As an Aboriginal Canadian, AUTHENTIC to me means being engaged in and contributing to my community. It also means respecting our history while creating positive change for the future. The best way for me to make the biggest impact in the lives of Aboriginal Canadians is to get as many people wearing Manitobah Mukluks as possible. It’s simple, for every pair of Manitobah Mukluks sold, we are able to make a bigger impact in our community. As a company, we work with local artists, we showcase successful role models, we work to bring our culture to the world and we invest in education and employment through our partnership with CAHRD (Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development). I’m particularly proud of our StoryBoot project which aims to help revive traditional arts by creating business building partnerships with elders and artisans who fashion mukluks and moccasins the traditional way. These are the core values that our products support and reflect. Through our “Walk With Us” program, we also let consumers learn about our community programs and choose one for which we will contribute an additional $1 as a thank you for their purchase and registration. Making some products overseas allows us to reach more people than we would otherwise, thereby contributing to the growth of the brand and to our impact in the community. I believe that our success as an Aboriginal business has been due to our willingness to walk forward while honoring our past. Thank you for walking with us. Clutch size depends upon the availability of food, and in particularly lean times a usually monogamous pair of owls may not breed at all. Parents are territorial and will defend their nests against all comers— even wolves. The snowy owl is a patient hunter that perches and waits to identify its prey before soaring off in pursuit. Snowy owls have keen eyesight and great hearing, which can help them find prey that is invisible under thick vegetation or snowcover. Traditionally, our ancestors used flat, palm-sized stones with beveled edges as scrapers. They also used bone, wood and trees in their work, pulling the skins back and forth around a smooth-bark tree until the hide was ready for a four-day bath in ash and water that would completely remove hair from the hide. After that, a time-tested mixture of sunlight, brain-tanning and handsmoothing would dry and soften the hide into a perfect piece of leather fit for use as clothing, pouches or blankets. The Métis are one of three officially recognized Aboriginal Peoples in Canada. CHARCOAL CHARCOAL CHOCOLATE TAN BLACK The Métis People wove floral art patterns into the lives of most tribes on the Northern Plains. These designs became a defining cultural symbol for us. For this reason, the Dakota Sioux and Cree called us the “Flower Beadwork People.” Métis women had always adorned tipis and clothing with geometric beadwork, but the patterns changed when Roman Catholic missions along the St. Lawrence River introduced the Métis to European folk art. By the 1830s, vibrant floral designs were found on most of our products. Floral beadwork reached unrivaled levels of artistry throughout the Red River region during the mid-nineteenth century.
