He is so much fun to own and show; I love having a dog that wants to learn new things and likes the show ring! Joey‟s name, Brown Bomber, comes from the most famous fighter of all time — Joe Louis. But Joey is actually a lover, not a fighter! Sire: Ch. Dowat’s the Contender Dam: Cherokee Legend Ivory Girl — “Millie” Joey also has completed his CGC, has two legs on his Novice Rally title, and won Best in Sweeps in Seattle. Pat Ropp November is BCA Nationals month! Westin Crown Center www.2009bcanationalshow.com We certainly wish all members who are attending the Nationals, the very best! BCNC can be very proud indeed of our West Coast Bulldogs. Did you notice all the innovations this year — reserved crating and grooming areas, reserved seating, no puppies under the age of 6 months allowed at the Westin hotel, and for the first time in many years — no newsletter contest, and subsequently, no website competition either. Very good news: If you cannot attend but wish you could this year you can watch from your computer via a live video feed! The entire six days will be broadcast live — cost is $25 prepaid. Single days are just $10. For details, go to www.2009bcanationalshow.com. The California Bulldogge—October 2009 BCNC Meeting Information Upcoming meeting locations: October: Change of location to the BCNC specialty on Saturday, Oct. 17th, after the completion of judging, in the show room. Elections will take place at the Annual Meeting in January, according to the BCNC Constitution & Bylaws. December meeting will be held at the Christmas Match/ Party, December 13th. Change of location: back to ARF, Walnut Creek. The October General Membership Meeting will be held Saturday, October 17 at the Concord Holiday Inn 1050 Burnett Avenue Concord, CA at the BCNC Specialty Show (after Bulldog specialty breed judging) 2009 Membership Rates Annual membership rates are $20 each. I hope many of you have entered and others who are not entered will come and join in the fun. We have a lot to see and enjoy: obedience, rally, conformation classes, raffle table, auction items, and ways and means — something for everyone! As the year begins to wrap up, I start to think about how we can be more inclusive of our many members out there. I would love for everyone to come to the Specialty; it is just a wonderful, fun event. I know not everyone can come, but even if you have just ONE pet, you will find something fun there to watch and enjoy. We urge you to come, get involved. We need volunteers to sell raffle tickets, ways and means, donate items to auction or the raffle, and help set up or tear down the show. IT ALL BOOSTS THE BULLDOG, OUR WONDERFUL, LOVING BREED. This year we will have Brenda Newcomb from the National Education committee for Bulldog Club of America putting on a seminar on the Bulldog. It will be very educational and interesting, so plan to attend that as well. SEE YOU ALL AT THE SHOW!!! No dog shall be exhibited in a licensed or member dog show, except for dogs entered in the Miscellaneous Class unless it is either individually registered in the AKC Stud Book, or individually registered with a foreign registry organization whose pedigrees are acceptable for AKC registration. A dog with an AKC limited Registration shall be ineligible to be entered in a breed competition in a licensed or member dog show. An unregistered dog with an acceptable foreign registration that is individually registered with a foreign registry organization whose pedigrees are acceptable for AKC registration may, without special AKC approval, be exhibited in licensed or member dog shows that are held not later than 30 days after the date of the first licensed or member dog show in which the dog was exhibited, but only provided that the individual foreign registration and name of the country of birth, are shown on the entry form; and provided further that the same name (which in the case of a foreign-registered dog must be the name on the foreign registrations) is used for the dog each time. No dog that has not been individually registered with The American Kennel Club when first exhibited in a licensed or member dog show shall be eligible to be exhibited in any licensed or member dog show that is held more than 30 days after the date of the first licensed or member dog show in which it was exhibited, unless the dog's individual AKC registration number is shown on the entry form, or unless the owner has received from The American Kennel Club an extension notice in writing authorizing further entries of the dog for a specified time with its individual foreign registration number. No such extension will be granted unless the owner can clearly demonstrate, in a letter addressed to the Show Records Department of The American Kennel Club requesting such extension, that the delay in registration is due to circumstances for which he is not responsible. Such extension notice will be void upon registration of the dog or upon expiration of the period for which the extension has been granted if that occurs earlier, but upon application further extensions may be granted. The California Bulldogge—October 2009 Q: Some Bulldogs are more resistant to training and less motivated by food than others; in short, they seem to just not care about it. What tricks or suggestions do you have to get them ‘up’? Hi Everybody, Prize: I sure have heard some nice things from some of you about the new column. Glad you liked it. I find it hard to believe there are dogs out there that aren‟t wild about food, I mean really, so I asked my Mom if she knows how to deal with it. She sure hasn‟t learned how from any of us. Mom writes for me: It is true that some dogs are more difficult to motivate than others. We have all heard of Pavlov‟s experiments where he rang a bell and food appeared. Soon, the dogs would salivate upon hearing the bell even when food did not appear. This is a method of raising the importance of one thing by its association with another. In other words, the dogs liked food. When the bell rang as food appeared the dogs learned to associate the bell with food and gave a positive response. Okay how does that help us as trainers? First, we start with something the dog likes, a ball, a toy, a certain game, petting…. Do what they like and give some food tidbit with it. Gradually, the importance of food will rise. However, just throwing food is not the whole answer. You need GOOD treats, something your dog thinks is good — liverwurst, string cheese, roast beef, chicken, liver cookies. Notice none of these are prepared “dog treats”. For some dogs commercial stuff is just great, but with your hard-to-motivate dog you need the big guns. Prize: Okay guys, that sounds great, but she forgot the most important part: when she offers me treats she gets all excited, shows it to me, tells me how great it is and, of course, how great I am, and then gives me the treat. Naturally, I‟m really ready for it and eager to do whatever she asks for next to get some more of that good stuff and lots more of that excitement, petting and praise. Mom says training a dog is a lot like the agility teeter totter that I used to do before I retired — you want to balance it. So, if your dog is hard to get excited, you need to up the ante and get real excited. Sometimes Mom had to do that with me when I was too worried about The Aliens. With Copper Bear, she has to be very calm and low key because Copper is such a goofball. „Til next time, Mom‟s address, phone and email are here: Betty Fisher, P.O. Box 93, Raymond, CA 93653, 559-689-3551, [email protected].
