The National Transgender Celebration 2014
Welcome to Sparkle 2014 and of
course, the tenth Sparkle celebration
in Manchester’s wonderfully supportive and friendly Village area. I find it
amazing to look back over the years
and realise this is the Tenth Sparkle,
it really doesn’t seem that long since
the first one back in 2005!
Of course we just had to celebrate
the occasion this year and so don’t
forget that Sparkle in the Park takes
place on both Saturday and Sunday
this time round. We have a fabulous
mix of artists and performers to entertain you and even if you have to head
home on the Sunday you can still pop
into Sackville Gardens for a few hours
in the afternoon and enjoy the event.
I am personally so proud to have
been part of Sparkle since that very
first year and would like to publically
thank everyone who has helped
and supported me over the years as
Sparkle has grown into the amazing festival of transgender we are all
attending right now! Of course there
is a little bit of sadness too for me this
year as I retire as Event Director after
this Sparkle. Others are keen to take
on my role, so I’m sure Sparkle
2015 will be as good as any that
have gone before.
I wish you all an amazing
weekend – Sparkle is the perfect
place to relax, meet new friends
and enjoy a weekend amongst a
like-minded and friendly crowd.
My thanks to everyone who has
worked so hard to make the 10th
Sparkle so special and most
importantly to you for attending
and supporting the event!
Bella Jay

and chair of trustees

The Beaumont Society is a national self help body run by and for the
transgender community. Together with our sister organisations, the
Beaumont Trust and Beaumont Partners, since 1966, we’ve been
at the forefront of supporting the transgender community, together
with their partners and families, as well as advising and training on
transgender issues.
Membership of the society costs £29 per annum and entitles members to access private membership forums and a support database,
four magazines per year and discount to various Beaumont organized events, as well as other services such as counselling through
support agencies.

Interview with Miss Sparkle 2013
Question: How long have you
been ‘dressing’ and what are
your earliest memories of it?
Lexi: My earliest memories
of ‘dressing’ were when I was
wearing my mother’s high heels,
many years ago; I was about 5
years old at the time. I remember
I always wanted to be a girl but
unfortunately it didn’t turn out as I
expected. I couldn’t tell my mum
about it, my mum wouldn’t have
understood my secret gender
identity crisis. I guess in those
years it wouldn’t have been accepted, I was born in 1983. I’ve
now been ‘dressing’ properly for
roughly six years and when I do
I feel a sense of excitement and
fun, plus empowerment, but not
in a selfish negative way, in a
positive one.
Question: Do you get out much
on the TG social scene and if so
where?
Lexi: Absolutely, there’s a
website I use called TVchix.com
(main Sparkle 2014 sponsor)
that has a calendar full of upcoming events. I go to Leeds First
Friday on a regular basis. A lot
of TV/TS/CD girls go there for
6
The National Transgender Celebration 2014
a social gathering, I really love
going and you can make new
friends, meet people and have
a good time without feeling any
discrimination. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to
let their hair down and boogie on
the dance-floor!
Question: How would you
describe yourself, e.g. TG, TV,
TS etc? And are you happy in
that role?
Lexi: I consider myself as a TV,
which I am now happy with. I was
a TS before, but I decided to end
that journey for personal reasons.
I don’t think people would understand if I tried to explain it, they
would accuse me of being fake.
But I’ve lived the transgender
path and sadly it wasn’t the life
I really wanted, it was extremely
difficult for me.
Question: Have you ever been
to Sparkle before? And did you
enjoy it last year?
Lexi: I went to sparkle in 2009
and 2010, they we’re great years,
but 2013 for me personally was
the best year I’ve ever been. Not
just because I won Miss Sparkle. The love and support from
people all over the City, coming
to a transgendered community
celebration, was so overwhelming. There were so many positive
people and a real positive karma,
it was unbelievable.
Question: How did it feel to win?
And did it change your life?
Lexi: It has to be one of the
highlights of my life; I am so
thankful and extremely lucky to
have won Miss Sparkle. I must
say that I never expected to win
the competition, but I guess God
was on my side, this will definitely
change my life forever. I want to
thank the judges, Leah True and
Dee Selecta, Chelsea the hostess
and everyone who made Miss
Sparkle and the Sparkle weekend
as a whole such a great success.
I also appreciated the huge support from the crowd, I love you all!
I have been invited back this year
as one of the judges.

My personal Sparkle
Husband and wife, Cindy
and Val, on why Sparkle is
so special to them:
Val (left) and Cindy
at Sparkle 2010
26
It was just 7 years ago when I
first ventured out of the closet,
so I did not have the pleasure of
witnessing the first few years of
Sparkle. However, in 2014 my
wife and I will have been at 5 of
the past 6 Sparkles, and what
an incredible event this is. As
we live about 1,000 miles away
from Manchester in the middle
of Germany, it is not an easy or
cheap thing to just ‘pop’ over for
a few days, so we have often
been asked what draws us back
year after year.
For us it is 3 days of socializing, education and partying with
people of a kindred spirit, in a
venue that is so delightful it has
to be experienced to be believed,
supported by a huge array of displays, performances, workshops,
lectures, information sources, retail therapy, excellent restaurants,
pubs and clubs. Plus, most importantly of all, plenty of opportunities
to wear seriously sparkly dresses!.
What more could a girl want for a
perfect weekend away?
There is simply no better place
to meet old friends, make new
friends, learn about what is happening in the LGBT scene, dance
a bit, eat a lot, chill with some-
The National Transgender Celebration 2014
thing cold, and then enjoy some
Hot night life, all within the beautifully compact area of the Village.
One of the strengths of Sparkle
over so many other events I have
attended is the diversity of us
boys, girls and inbetweenies that
come to celebrate this event. I
have never seen anywhere else
where so many different colorful
threads of the rich tapestry of the
LGTB community come together
to have a great time, and celebrate our diversity as one.
I would also like to extend sincere thanks to the regular users
and dwellers of Canal Street (I
mean the daily regulars and all
the boys and girls in the pubs
clubs and restaurants) for opening their doors and their hearts to
us TGs for our annual visit to the
Village for Sparkle - you really do
make us feel welcome and safe.
Cindy Share
It’s that wonderful time of year
again, when my husband’s
female persona Cindy and I pack
our bags and make our way to
Canal Street in Manchester. We
are looking forward to yet another
super weekend!
Why do I enjoy it so much?
There are lots of reasons.
First of all, Canal Street is unique.
I know of nowhere else in the
world where so many different
walks of life can socialize together
without any form of discrimination.
Everybody is there purely to have
a good time out with friends. As
occasional visitors, all who are associated with Sparkle are always
made very welcome – where else
would the residents not object to
an influx of so many visitors for
three days in such a small area?
Admittedly the first time I went to
Sparkle with Cindy, it was to lend
her moral support, and neither of
us had any real idea as to what
Sparkle was/is. She hadn’t been
‘out’ for long either and was a bit
short on self confidence. Now I
find I am the one who is asking if
we are attending! The whole atmosphere of the 3 days is special
– it’s so hard to describe! Although
there are so many people there,
we have no problems meeting up
with friends from previous years.
And we also seem to make a lot
of new friends.
Yes, it is a long way for us to
Manchester from Germany, but
it is a journey we hopefully will
continue to do and enjoy the
experience of Sparkle for many
years to come. Val

A Voice from the Past
Bella Jay talks with Sparkle
founder Kimberly:
Bella: As Kim Angel, you were
the founder of Sparkle but many
people will never have met you …
where have you been?
Kimberley: Well the simple truth
is, I never planned to run Sparkle
forever, it was always a short-term
plan with the intention of passing
the baton to someone else and
for them to do the same later
down the line. Bella darling, I’m
surprised you lasted to 10 years
before you passed it on!
Bella: So why did you start
Sparkle?
Kimberley: I had been attending
Pride for many years and think it’s
wonderful that it represents the
LGBT spectrum, but I felt the ‘T’
didn’t always sit perfectly in there.
LGB is a sexual orientation and
the ‘T’ isn’t. I feel it is vital that
the ‘T’ is in the rainbow mix but I
also felt is was important to have
a standalone celebration day and
not to be lost within Pride.

Without your help Bella and the
support of Rose’s it really would
never have happened though. I
started fund-raising evenings that
were attended by some VERY
generous individuals from the
Boudoir plus some anonymous
donations. In year one I managed to raise a little over £10k to
make it happen ... and WOW did
it happen!
Bella: Is there a memorable
moment for you?
Bella: But how did you make
Sparkle happen?
Kimberley: Blood, sweat and
tears, as you know all too well
Bella! Firstly I needed to inspire
the movers and shakers within
the T-community: WayOut, The
Boudoir, Beaumont, Repartee,
Transliving, Northern Concord
etc. I did this through a very
cheeky email under a pseudonym to gauge response and after
a lot of ‘who are you?’ replies, I
managed to get everyone to join
forces.
The National Transgender Celebration 2014
Kimberley: Lots, honestly lots! I
remember picking up crowd barriers from a council site in Manchester with the gorgeous Sue
Brown (blonde bombshell). We
had to stop and ask directions
from a middle aged man in the
street and he flirted outrageously
with us. My favourite line of his to
Sue was “I love blondes, they get
dirty quicker!”
I suppose one of the defining
moments was in year two. The
stage was set, acts ready, fashion
show prepped and Miss Sparkle
entrants champing at the bit. I sat
in the hire van at the side of the
stage, exhausted, staring at the
rain pouring down and just cried. I
couldn’t believe after all the effort
that the weather would ruin it for
everyone. Sitting there with a
runny nose, smudged make-up
and a steamed up van, the sun
came out … perhaps divine intervention does exist!
Bella: This is the tenth year celebration, how do you feel about
coming back?
Kimberley: Oh so excited. I know
you’ve done such an amazing job
and to step into the park again
after 5 years absence will bring
back so many memories. I’m
also intrigued to see how much
has changed and see all the new
faces. I’m hoping the new generation is taking an interest and has
ideas of their own. I’m looking forward to a fun weekend!

Our Thanks
Sparkle costs a lot of money to put together: the hire of Sackville Gardens,
the stage, light and sound systems,
power, insurance and much more
besides! So our weekend is only
made possible by the kind support of
our sponsors. We wish to thank them
all for their generosity, without which
there would be no Sparkle!
Please support them as they have
supported our community.
