● The saddle and its mountings – the
leathers, stirrup irons and girth – are
items which, if cared for, will last almost
a lifetime.
Points of potential failure which need to
be checked regularly include the most
most vulnerable area of the saddle, the
girth straps and their attachment.
The stitching, securing the girth straps to
the webs passing round or over the tree,
will wear or perish and need to be
replaced.
Girth straps, however good the quality of
the leather, are also subject to wear.
When the holes stretch and the leather is
in danger of splitting between the holes
new straps should be fitted.
The so-called "safety" catch on stirrup
bars should be kept in the open position.
A closed catch can stop the leather being
freed in a fall and may result in the rider
being dragged.
● Regular cleaning of leather tack with a
glycerine-based soap and reliable
“leather food” preparation is essential to
keep it soft, supple and serviceable.
● Stirrup leathers receive the most wear
at the point where they turn through the
eye of the stirrup iron.
This is why stirrup leathers’ tougher
“grain” (the outside) faces inwards, since
the dressing, etc, makes it more resistant
to friction.
Shorten the leathers every so often so to
move the point of contact with the iron.
Even better, replace them regularly with
best quality new ones.

A pizza the action
GONE are the times when camp and rallies were held in a farmer’s borrowed
field.
Youngsters at the North Hereford Hunt
Pony Club camp enjoyed a fantastic
line-up of daytime and evening entertainment at Tack Farm Equestrian
Centre, Ullingswick.
The days started at 8.15am with hay,
feed and watering, followed by breakfast
and stables and grooming.
There were riding and instruction all
morning, followed by stable management lessons in the afternoon before a
second ride, evening stables and tack
cleaning. All the instruction is a great
opportunity for the children to improve
their riding with a relatively intense
crash course while learning the vital
points of horse and pony care.
The evening programme included a vet
talk, pizza meal, fish and chip night,
Pony Club racing talk, an evening with
international event riders and a barbecue and swimming.
What a great way to spend a week of
the summer holidays. Long live Pony
Club camp!

PIZZAS, barbecues, friends and plenty
of riding and playing ponies – it
sounds like a dream to me!
Wet weather and floods washed out the
North Hereford Hunt branch of the
Pony Club’s first attempt at camp this
summer but, in typical Pony Club fashion, organisers were undeterred, spirits
remained undampened, and the fiveday event was hurriedly rescheduled for
last week.
Summer camp is the highlight of the
holidays for most Pony Club members
and is a tradition which the North
Hereford Hunt Pony Club is trying hard
to keep alive.
“With rising costs of holding the camp
and more schoolwork and out-of-school
clubs for the children, it is increasingly
difficult to run camp and rallies,” said
district commissioner Margaret Owers.
“The trouble, really, is that keeping
ponies is a full-time hobby.
“If you are going to come to rallies and
events, you can’t just leave your pony
for weeks then pick it out of the field
and expect to come along. It is not that
kind of hobby.
“Ponies need looking after and exercis-

ing every day and that is often difficult
for children these days with more
homework and other things going on.”
This is a concern shared by many other
branches up and down the country,
which are making huge efforts to keep
up with the changing times and
demands from youngsters.
The aim is to give good instruction but
to keep things fun and make things
accessible to young people of all levels
of rider, including the more nervous
ones.
This was, of course, why the Pony Club
was founded – to give children of all
abilities and ages the opportunity to
learn how to ride and look after their
ponies while making friends along the
way.
For some lucky riders, it is the start of a
long and successful career at the top
and numerous Badminton competitors
started in their local Pony Club branch.

A little
local
game
that
went
around
the
world
!
!
MANIPUR, a small state in
north east India, is the
home of Sagol Kangjei the
forerunner of modern
international polo.
It was from here the British
officers and tea planters took
the game to Calcutta and
then spread it around the
world.
Sagol Kangjei is part of
Meitei (the main tribe in
Manipur) religious mythology. Their gods are depicted
playing it at the creation and
it is now thought that polo
originated in this part of the
world.
Sagol Kangjei has seven
players on each side and,
originally, the winner was the
first team to reach a given
number of goals and there
was a break when half the
stipulated amount was
scored.
There are no goal posts; the
ball is hit over the opponent’s
end line to score.
Today there are two 20minute halves with a fiveminute rest at half time. The
same ponies are used
throughout.
There is no umpire, just a
highly respected local dignitary who sits at the sideline
and passes judgement in the
case of an unresolved dispute.
The Huntre Hunba, ball
thrower, is on the sideline at
the centre of the pitch and
throws the ball in to start the
game and a new one after
each goal. Two conch shell
blowers announce the beginning and end of the halves
and every goal.
The players gather in the
centre waiting for the Huntre
Hunba to throw the ball high
in the air and barge each
other as they try to catch it.
If they succeed, they gallop
with it to their opponent’s
end line and must drop it to

They were used for Arambai
Hunba, a martial art that helped
the Meitei conquer much of
Assam and northern Burma.
Arambai are darts with a six
inch point, shaped like a Bodkin
arrowhead, with a flight of pea-

soon as a goal is scored,
another ball is thrown in.
The ponies are all Manipuri
ponies between 11 and 13
hands high.
They have speed, agility, are
highly adaptable and brave,
making them ideal for polo.

live, the players hacked there,

really hard – none had shoes or
went lame. Most Meitei used to
have a smallholding and would
keep a pony to play in weekly
local matches.
With modernisation many
farmers have moved to the city
and the village pitches have
been built over.
Imphal, the capital, has
expanded tremendously and is
still doing so, depriving the
ponies of grazing and pushing
them ever further from the
remaining two polo grounds in
the centre.
Some owners turn their ponies
loose for the night on the palace
polo ground if there are practice
matches on Saturday and
Sunday.
Unfortunately it is only fenced
on three sides and is also used
for football and other sports as
well as grazing cattle and sheep,
so the ponies wander off looking
for food. One evening I passed
two ponies that had wandered
and were competing with some
cows on a pile of rubbish. Every
year several ponies are lost to

Hunba.
Manipur is also
the home of
Sagol Kangjei,
the forerunner of
modern international polo and he
was keen to see
how this was surviving, along with
the Meitei pony –
the original polo
pony.
