Please make sure you lock your cars and keep
any valuables secure as there is a public
footpath that runs though the centre of the field
and unfortunately not everyone is as honest as
you would like to think.
We can not accept any liability for anything
that goes missing
Q1 – DO I NEED TO PLAIT MY HORSE?
Usually yes, unless your horse is a native pony, a cob or an Arabian. All other
horses are shown plaited. Most cobs have their manes hogged with the exception
of traditional Gypsy cobs. Arabians and native ponies are shown with their manes
and tails long and natural. If you are showing your native pony in other classes
then I recommend you plait the first bit of mane by the ear but do not roll it up.
This shows the judge that he is of native breeding – not that you didn’t bother to
plait!
Q2 – DO I NEED TO BE REGISTERED WITH AN APPROPRIATE SHOWING SOCIETY?
Nope, no need to register for anything. We are only a small show and not affiliated
to anything. This is all about having fun!
Q3 – WHAT DO I NEED TO WEAR?
This is all down to what class you are entering. Showing has very plain turnout requirements. You must wear cream beige or canary jodhpurs – not white! A tweed
jacket is preferred with brown gloves and hat cover to match. You can get a bit
creative and choose a tie that suits your jacket or horse. For boots, if you are under sixteen you wear small brown jodhpur boots without chaps, long black leather
boots if you are older. A plain brown whip is good if you haven’t got a showing
cane.
Q4 – WHAT DOES MY HORSE WEAR?
Again, this depends on what class you are entering. Your horse must be smart and
clean and preferably wear plain brown tack. A small discreet numnah that blends
in with your saddle is good or you can go without one. No boots and no gadgets.
Your horse must wear nothing else but his saddle and bridle. For Hacks and Riding
Horses and Riding Ponies, a coloured browband is allowed, otherwise it’s plain.
TIPS AND HINTS






If your horse has white markings, use chalk powder to whiten them up a bit.
Try and enter the arena first, this shows that your horse doesn’t mind leading
and that you are feeling confident.
Keep an eye out for horses that are going a different speed to you and circle
away if you get too close.
Try not to cut in front of others when the judge is watching them, it can come
across as quite rude.
Keep an eye on the judge and steward… and one eye on everything else!
Make sure it is you they are calling forward and not someone else to avoid
embarrassment!
For your individual show, keep it short and simple. Do a figure of eight in trot,
show a brief canter on both reins and (if safe) open up a bit on a straight.
Judges like to see an extended canter or a bit of a gallop! Don’t over complicate your show, keep it short and sweet. Remember to halt and salute the
judge before going back to the line up.
Remember, we’re only a small show, so just enjoy yourself and smile. Show the
judge how much fun you are having on your horse!
If you have enjoyed yourself here at Stroud Pony Club today
and you’re not already a member, why not join us?
