MUSIC & DANCE
Ballroom Dance Level I
Don’t just watch the stars dance, learn how to move around the dance floor in this fun dance
class. Whether you’re just beginning ballroom dancing, or would like to brush up on your
basic dance moves, this dance class is for you. You’ll learn the swing, waltz and rumba,
while you stay in shape and socialize. Register early as class size is limited.

Ballroom Dance Level II
This class is designed for those with some ballroom dance experience. Time will be spent
on emphasizing leading and following skills along with adding new patterns. Enhance the
movement of your dancing by learning to develop the advanced techniques used by the
experts. Dances covered will be chosen by the participants.

Your Ballroom Dance instructors are Dave & Karen
Goggin from the Eau Claire area. They have over 30
combined years of professional teaching experience in
Ballroom & Latin dancing. They teach a combination
of private and group lessons in the Eau Claire,
Chippewa Falls, and Marshfield areas. Dave and Karen
welcome singles and couples into their classes and take
a personal interest in making sure everyone, including
novice and experienced participants, have fun while
learning.

Popular Instrument Lessons for Beginners
See how easy it can be to learn to play popular songs in these small group lessons for guitar,
ukulele, mandolin or banjo. You will be introduced to the beginner chords, scales, and
playing techniques. Plus you will learn proper instrument position, study basic music theory
and start to understand why and when notes are played.
Your instructor, Roger Harrison, is a seasoned and versatile
musician. He joined the Musicians’ Union at the young age of
13 and has been teaching others to make music for many years.
Playing in his family band, Roger has performed as the opening
act for Conway Twitty, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Williams Jr. and
other nationally known performers.

Red Cedar Choir
The Red Cedar Choir is a partnership with the UW-BC
Music Department and surrounding communities. You will
have the incredible opportunity to sing and be part of one
of the best choirs in the area. It is open to all community
members, high school age and older. An audition may be
required for new members. The choir is under the direction
of Beth Joosten. Joosten has been a resident of the area
since 1974. She presently teaches various music courses
at UW-BC and also teaches vocal and general music at
Cameron Middle School and High School. Joosten has been
the director of the Red Cedar Choir since 2012.

Communiversity Band
Communiversity Band is a joint effort of the UW-BC Music
Department and the adult musicians of the surrounding communities.
The Communiversity Band rehearses on Mondays during the first
and second semesters. The band performs one concert during each
semester and special concerts in neighboring communities. This
ensemble is open to any student or community member. Mike Joosten
is the director of the Communiversity Band.

Yoga Beginner Series
Yoga is a great way to balance the mind and body. Learn the basics of yoga in the four week
progressive class. Gain flexibility through stretches, learn breathing techniques, and build
strength through this ancient practice. We will start from the foundational poses of Hatha yoga and
gradually add in more poses. No yoga experience is required and you don’t even have to be able to
touch your toes! All ages and levels of fitness welcome.

Jessica Mongeon, RYT, is a yoga instructor at Olympic Fitness and
substitute teaches at Eden Yoga in Rice Lake. She is a Registered Yoga
Teacher, and completed her 200-hour training through Yogafit. She
has been instructing yoga since 2009 at several gyms and yoga studios in Grand Forks, ND and
Bozeman, MT. She is also an art lecturer at UW-Barron County and earned a Master of Fine Arts
degree from Montana State University in painting and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the
University of North Dakota.
Learn to Curl!
Curling became a full medal Olympic sport in
1998 and today over a million curlers are on the
ice during the season. It’s a team-based sport
that’s fun, social and great exercise. Plus – it can
be played by people of all ages. During class you
will learn the terminology, rules, and techniques
to become a curler. Class will take place on the
ice where you will learn and build confidence.

Clean tennis shoes must be brought separately to the class. Sand and other particles will
damage the ice! We recommend sweat pants or athletic pants and sweat shirt or light jacket. All
participants will be required to sign a liability waiver. Adults and youth minimum 13 years of age
are welcome to register.
Your instructor, Mike McLin, is an avid curler and Board Member of the Rice Lake Curling Club.
He is a well-known sportsman and is the owner of Grinders Sporting Goods in Rice Lake.

Walleye Fishing Techniques Only the Pros Know!
Beginning and advanced techniques for catching the elusive walleye will be our focus.
Topics to include: identification of some of the best walleye lakes in Northern Wisconsin,
DNR current rules and regulations for size and bag limits, types of fishing equipment—
rods, reels, line, etc, types of fishing bait—live bait and artificial, and types of locators.
You’ll also make your own walleye rigs in class. The second class will feature a focus
group of some of the best walleye anglers in Northern Wisconsin to discuss their proven
techniques and practices. The last class will be held on a nearby walleye lake so you can
see and apply what was learned in the first two classes to increase your success rate!

Bert Richard is well known in NW Wisconsin for his diverse interests. He is the Director
of the Wednesday Evening Walleye League and was designated “Mr. Walleye” in 2005
and 2011 for catching the largest walleye in the league. League members also know him as
“Trolling Bert.” He is an author of joke-telling books, a Chamber of Commerce ambassador
and a retired educator from WITC where he served as the Dean of Business.
Kayak Discovery: For Beginners
Learn how to get into this fun sport and look good at the same time! A recreational
instruction clinic for beginners covers the basics to help you enjoy the freedom and
simplicity of kayaking—one of the fastest growing water sports. During this 2 hour lesson
you will learn: choosing the right equipment and clothing, transport and care of your kayak,
how to get in/out of a kayak plus basic strokes and techniques that will give you a great
start.

Kayak the River: For Intermediate Level
Kayak the Red Cedar River from Mikana to the Red Barn Theatre and you’ll become more
confident and enjoy the sport even more. Class emphasis is on learning techniques to safely
navigate rivers, getting in/out of the kayak in moving water plus turning over your kayak
and getting back in. Go with the flow and experience the natural
scenery of our local river on this 3-1/2 hour learning excursion.

UW-BC Youth Basketball Clinic
Jeff Olson is back to lead our spring basketball camp at UW-BC! Players and parents alike
appreciate his teaching of basketball technique and drills to improve player skills. This
camp will focus specifically on offense and shooting technique. If you are a highly skilled
player or are only beginning to learn the game, you will benefit greatly from Jeff’s coaching
and his ability to inspire young athletes.
During Jeff’s 30 plus years of coaching he has led clinics throughout the Midwest and
in the states of Georgia, Oregon, Washington, & Alaska, and has taken teams to play in
Europe & Australia. He has coached boys and girls at the 5th grade, middle school and
high school levels. He also coached at the college level where he led his team to a district
championship, and was honored as NAIA District II Coach of the Year in only his third
year at Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon. In 2012 he led the UW-BC women’s
basketball team to the Wisconsin final four; only its second final four in the program’s
history.

Release Your Artistic Talent!
We’re offering three art classes that will help beginners get started and intermediates to
continue building on their skills and knowledge. Course fees include materials – all you
need to bring is a desire to learn, a willingness to have fun and your creative imagination!
All classes in the Art Series are taught by UW-BC art lecturer Jessica Mongeon.
Amazing Acrylics
Learn beginning acrylic painting techniques and create a small original canvas painting
during each class session. Jessica is an accomplished painter who specializes in acrylic
painting. Learn the basics along with some tricks of the trade in four weeks. Acrylic paint
is a water-based polymer that was developed to be an alternative to oil paint. Techniques
include color mixing, washes, palette painting, and using acrylic mediums.

Drawing for Beginners
Can’t draw a stick figure? No worries, this class will start with
simple shapes, move on to perspective, and introduce you to
portraits. Learn how to see the world around you in a new
way and translate it to a piece of paper. We will be working
primarily with graphite pencil on paper.

Watercolor Workshop for Beginners
Learn basic watercolor techniques and create a new painting
during each class session. Techniques include color mixing,

Your instructor for the Art Series is Jessica Mongeon who is an
art lecturer at UW-Barron County. She earned a Master of Fine
Arts degree from Montana State University in painting and a
Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of North Dakota. She has exhibited her
paintings regionally and nationally and has actively participated in artist residencies at the
Vermont Studio Center, the Anderson Center in Red Wing, Minnesota and the Sam and Adele

Business Communication: How to Write Effectively
The pace of business is fast and the need for written communication that is clear, concise
and to the point is critical to your success. Learn how to write effective business messages
including e-mails, requests, adjustments, detailed instructions, and how to deny claims
and give bad news. Class will include the basics of writing formal and informal business
reports.

Dr. Quentin Vieregge is an Assistant Professor of English
at UW-Barron County and has also taught at Texas Tech
University and the University of South Florida. He teaches
beginning and advanced level writing courses, literature and
film. Quentin has authored numerous articles and contributed
to several books on rhetoric & composition and pop culture.

Public Speaking in Business Communication
Learn the basics of public speaking and how to overcome the phenomena of stage fright
that many experience when speaking before peers, management or customers. We will
discuss types of presentations, the best styles to use and how to craft your message for the
audience. Participants will gain confidence and poise in public speaking.
Terry Wiesner is a Senior Lecturer of Communications and
Theatre Arts at UW-Barron County. He is well-known in the
community both as a dynamic instructor who brings energy
and excitement to his classes and as a director and actor for
productions at both UW-BC and Red Barn Theatre.

Maple Syrup Making: What makes it so mmm...good?
Ever wonder why trees produce sap? Or how trees are
tapped? Or how maple syrup is made? We’ll present the
theory behind maple syrup production as well as show you
how it is done and how your family can make their own
maple syrup from the trees on your property.
In Session One we’ll discuss the techniques of collecting
sap and making maple syrup for the beginner. Topics
include what trees to tap, tapping and sap collection
methods, cooking maple syrup, grading and packaging
the finished product as maple syrup or other maple
confections. Session Two will be held at Andersons’s
Maple Syrup facility in Cumberland where you’ll learn
about maple equipment, the supplies that are used, and
how they bottle syrup on a large scale.
Your instructor, Ted Simpson, is the Vice President of
Wisconsin Maple Syrup Producers Association and part owner of Simpson’s Rock Ridge
Maple Syrup located west of Rice Lake, Wisconsin. The Simpson family has been making

in each and how to write descriptions that sell. Bring an item or picture of something you
would like to sell and learn how to write an effective description and find the right selling
category. During class, your instructor will list one of her items on a popular site so you can
see how easy it can be once you get going.
Your instructor, Dr. Lauren Wentz, is an Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at
UW-Barron County. Previously she was an academic dean in Washington State and has
extensive background in environmental education and natural history interpretation. Not

The UW-BC drama department will offer a University Children’s Theatre in late April and
early May for area school-aged children and their families. Dates to be announced in local

The Red Cedar Symphony, founded in
1983, is an independent organization
collaborating with the UW-Barron
County Music Department to provide
orchestral performance opportunities to the
surrounding communities. The Red Cedar
Symphony is comprised of professional and amateur musicians and performs two concerts
per year. The orchestra is under the direction of Kevin Peters and is open to any student or
community member. Strings are always welcome and needed. Brass and wind players will
be accepted if a vacancy exists. Please contact the orchestra at
[email protected] if you are interested in joining.

Community Connections
With its growing number of international students on campus,
UW-Barron County invites community members to participate in
their Community Connections program. You can make a small or
large commitment by taking students out to a movie, a concert, a
walk by the Red Cedar River, or a meal in your home with your
family. Some have shared canoe rides, ice-fishing, BBQ and
holiday parties with our students. Befriending an international student is a great way for your
family to get to know someone from another culture and to share your own. We especially
need people to reach out to students in late August and September and then in December
and January. For more information, contact the International Program Coordinators,

Alliance
Alliance is a social, emotional, and educational support group for gay, lesbian, bisexual,
transgender, queer and ally populations on campus and in the surrounding communities.
Alliance also acts as an educational student organization to provide greater awareness of the
issues that concern the members, the university, and surrounding communities. For more

Charger Chess Club

Online Online registration is the fastest and easiest way! After registering and paying by credit card online you will receive an email confirmation that your registration and payment have been received.

Register early
Many classes fill up quickly so be sure to register early. Online registration is the quickest
way to register and to be assured there is an opening for you. Registration is not complete
until payment has been received.
Refunds and Cancellations
Full refunds will be made if the Continuing Education office is contacted at least 7 days
before the start of class. If cancelling with less than 7 days’ notice, there will be a $10
administration fee applied.
UW-Barron County reserves the right to cancel a course due to low enrollments in which
case full refunds will be given.
Weather or emergency class cancellation
Be sure to provide your email address and phone number so that if a class is cancelled due
to severe weather or instructor illness we can contact you quickly!
