We left Astoria invigorated about the possibilities and the processes available to help
pursue goals that are available to Lebanon now! City Manager, Dana pulled all of us
together as soon as we returned to brainstorm about what we will do with the knowledge
we’d gathered. We made a presentation to the Partners For Progress and at this writing,
will be doing the same at the Economic Development Committee. More to come!

In October, I had the opportunity to attend a Main Street Conference in Astoria
with Chamber President Carol Cromwell, Pacific Power’s Doris Johnston, Lebanon City
Manager Dana Hlavac and Walt Wendolowski Community Development Manager. The
conference was titled; ‘Cool cities: Old Buildings, New Attitudes’. Each of us took in
different workshops, i.e., ‘How to make downtown vital and attract people’, ‘Revitalizing
Main Street with Urban Renewal’, ‘New life for historic buildings’, ‘Preservation 101’ etc.

October in Lebanon brought beautiful fall colors and several history making events. The brand new Samaritan Event
Center held its first event and I have to say it was a success! The building is beautiful and holds so many people! The
Community Distinguished Service Awards Dinner will move to the Event Center in 2014.
4 days after the opening of the Event Center, Linn Benton Community College
hosted a grand opening-ribbon cutting at their brand new Advanced Transportation
Technology Center! There is nothing like this in the State! A crowd of over 300
celebrated this new facility and training center that has cutting edge tools equipment
and training!
As 2013 starts to fade away, my board of directors and I will look back on events,
activities and member services. New Chamber Board members: Helen Nelson, Joyce
Kanoff, David Dodson and Anita Vorderstrasse begin their terms in January.
Outgoing board members, Jennifer Meltzer, Rick Peterson, Tim Mattson and Don
Herb have been so generous in their service to the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce. I personally want to thank them for
their support and encouragement.
November is Thanksgiving! I am thankful for so much including:
54 NEW chamber members in 2013! I am thankful for the volunteers
who through their hard work and generosity make chamber activities
and events a success. I appreciate our Cornerstone Partners who help us
keep costs down. I am grateful for a very diverse-well functioning board
of directors and last but not least….for the opportunity to work with
two wonderful ladies: Mary Garner and Kim Calsadillas! Everyone
please have a great Thanksgiving!

Safe Haven Pet of the Month
Dana P. Hlavac
It’s hard to believe I am finishing my second full month as the city
manager for the City of Lebanon. It has been a whirlwind of meetings and
reading to understand what makes Lebanon such a special place. After
hundreds of meetings with employees, managers, business owners, citizen
groups, private citizens and elected leaders, I am amazed at how positive
every one is about the present and future of Lebanon. It is extremely clear
that there is an incredible foundation of positiveness surrounding the City of
Lebanon. This excitement doesn’t stop at our city limits either. I have heard
the same great perception of Lebanon everywhere I have gone in the State.
The forces that are serving to make Lebanon such a great place clearly include the employees, elected leaders, business
owners, Chamber of Commerce and involved citizens. While these are phenomenal assets, we are challenged to build upon
this great enthusiasm by growing our local business base on all fronts. This growth must come from paying attention to our
existing businesses as well as through the recruitment of new businesses.
While the awesome employees at the city continue to focus on providing street, water, sewer, park, law enforcement,
library, senior and development services under constant fiscal pressures; the greatest advances can be achieved through the
collective empowerment of our businesses and citizens to promote our city at every opportunity. Economic development
must be viewed as a community priority, rather than the function
of a particular employee, department or agency. As long as we
share a unified vision of growing our city in a balanced manner
there will be incredible opportunities for each and every one of
us to be a part of making Lebanon great(er). I welcome each and
every citizen to join me for a series of early morning coffees that
will begin in 2014 to share ideas and perspectives on how we can
make Lebanon even greater for all of our residents, as well as to
learn more about what is going on at the city.

Bryer is a 6-year-old Beagle mix who recently joined Safe Haven from Linn County Dog Control. We don’t know
Bryer’s life story but we do know he’s a pretty wonderful fella who is ready to find a loving FUR-ever home. If you’re
looking for an awesome dog, come meet Bryer today. And if you’re over the age of 60, you’ll get half off Bryer’s
adoption fee as part of Safe Haven’s Seniors + Seniors program.
Come meet Bryer and other adoptable animals at SafeHaven Humane Society. Located at 33071 Hwy 34 in
Albany, Safe Haven is open Tuesday through Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Sunday and Monday from
noon to 5 p.m. Or see their adoptable pets online at safehavenhumane.org.
SafeHaven Humane Society is a non-profit full adoption humane society that does not euthanize animals for
population support. Not ready to adopt but want to make a difference in the lives of the animals? Call 541.928.2789
for more information about volunteer opportunities, becoming a foster parent, making a donation and more.
A great library has something to offend everyone…
I understand why people sometimes question why a library would
have certain books on the shelves, but every now and again I’m taken by
surprise by what someone might consider inappropriate. For example, a
few years while hosting a school libraries board meeting, a fellow librarian
spotted an encyclopedia of weaponry on my new book display and
commented, “I’d be fired if I had that book in my library.”
Hmmm, I thought to myself – so in the name of “protecting” students
from violence, one couldn’t go to the library to look up the difference
between a shotgun and a rifle? Another couldn’t research the kinds of
weapons used in World War I? I’ll be the last person to condone allowing
guns in school, but banning books about guns?
Every fall book stores and libraries throughout the country host “Banned Book Week” to call
attention to the fact that censorship efforts are alive and well in the United States, and the targets
are sometimes pretty surprising. Of course “Fifty Shades of Grey” made the most recent list (2012),
but it only came in a measly fourth place – number one honors went to “Captain Underpants,” that
perennially popular series of chapter books in which two ornery fourth grade boys use their magic
3-D Hypno-Ring (which they ordered for $2.99 plus $1.01 Shipping and Handling from the Li’l
Wiseguy Novelty Company) to turn their principal into their very own comic book hero, “Captain
Underpants, champion of Truth, Justice, and all that is Pre-Shrunk and Cottony!”
Okay, the books make fun of authority figures and positively overflow with potty humor, but
what better way to get kids – especially boys – excited about reading? And to be honest, I think
they are hilarious, too.
Not everyone in the world has the
right to read whatever they choose – as a
matter of fact, it’s a lot less common than
you’d imagine. I invite you to celebrate
that freedom by stopping by the library

bad experience. So what do you do with an irate or angry customer? How do you resolve their problem so
that they don’t become abusive or even destructive to your business? Call 541-258-7164 for more information.

The Veterans Memorial at the Lebanon
IOOF Cemetery was dedicated November,
2003. The Memorial, on the southeast corner
of the cemetery, consists of five walls, each
honoring a branch of the Armed Forces: Air
Force: Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy.
In front of each wall is a flag pole for the
respective branch. The sixth pole is for the
United States flag. The brick deck-work in front
of the walls and flag poles contains several
rows of engraved bricks which honor any and
all veterans. If you are interested in sponsoring
an engraved brick, contact Odd Fellows
Cemetery at 541-451-1114.
