SARCOMA AWARENESS
NEWSLETTER
2nd Annual Team Sarcoma 5k Event
a Huge Success
Local effort having national impact
on sarcoma community.
On July 11, 2015 the Capital Region of New York
came together to increase awareness of sarcoma, to
raise funds for sarcoma research and to remember
and honor Parker Hayes. We were blessed with
spectacular weather and an amazing display of
community and common purpose. The event was
emceed by local radio host, Brian Cody from FLY
92.3, who was also able to lace up his shoes
Kristen Shinebarger crossing finish line with her
and join in on the run. Jeff Goupil and Megan
ever present smile
Romer were our 1st Place male and female finishers,
respectively. Team NYOH had the most participants. With over 500 participants and
volunteers present, it was obvious how inspiring our local sarcoma warriors have been for
their families, their schools and their communities. We were able to raise just over $42,000
to fund a sarcoma research grant through the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society. The grant will
soon be open for applicants and the funds distributed to the researcher who is deemed to
have the greatest impact for those battling sarcoma. Several local news outlets were present
at the event and aired coverage to help shine a light on SARCOMA!
Thank you to all our donors,
and a SPECIAL THANK YOU
to those individuals and
companies who donated
$1000 or greater.

Because of our success in previous years we have outgrown the Saratoga Spa State Park
for the 5K event. We view this as a GOOD problem and have used it to establish a new
collaboration with SUNY Albany. The date is set for August 20, 2016 and the course is
a certified 5K route on the campus of SUNY Albany. The Foundation at SUNY Albany is
considering some level of sponsorship and the Cancer Research Center headed by Dr. Martin
Tenniswood are eager to join our mission and help us meet the following goals in 2016:
Upcoming Orthopaedic
Oncology Meetings
AAOS/MSTS –Musculoskeletal
Tumor Society Specialty Day
Orlando, FL • March 5, 2016
EMSOS – European MusculoSkeletal Oncology Society
