MANIS Activities 2015 - 2016 term 1 Music Classical Electric or Bass Guitar Learn to play guitar in classical, jazz or pop method, or simply just for fun. Open for everyone from children to adult, theory and practical will be covered. You must have a strong finger and your own guitar in a correct size. It’s strongly advice for beginner to start with nylon string’s guitar (classical guitar). Find out the fun of playing the low notes using the bass guitar, and giving the beat a tune by picking, hammering and slapping the instrument. Open for young adult to adult (grade 3 and up). Theory and practical will be covered in one to one basis (private) for 30 minutes lesson. For who Primary 1 / Group 3 – Primary 6 / Group 8. Duration & Preparation 30 minutes (private lesson); music instrument is not included. Teacher(s) NIS Keyboard If you want a fun introduction to keyboard lessons or improve your skills, then you should join our keyboard lessons. Participants will learn about how to use your fingers correctly, how to read (basic) notes, how to play (basic) chords, and how to play simple (or more advanced) rhythm and songs. For who Primary 1 / Group 3 – Primary 6 / Group 8. Duration & Preparation 30 minutes (group lesson; max. 4 students); instrument is included but student should have a keyboard at home / outside class time to practice. Teacher(s) NIS Page 1 Guitar Ensemble During this class, we will learn the basics about singing songs and playing along with the guitar. You will learn how to tune your guitar, how to have the right finger technique and the basis chords. Every week we will learn a new song (English and Dutch) and how to play the chords with the guitar. At the end of this course you have learned to sing and play a lot of famous songs and impress your friends with your skills. This class is open for everyone who’s fingers are big and strong enough to handle a guitar. Children can bring a smaller size guitar. Also parents are very welcome to join this guitar group. You need to bring your own acoustic guitar (with nylon strings) and also practice a minimum of 3 times a week at home in order to get good results. Let’s rock it! For who Primary 1 - Group 3 / Primary 6 - Group 8 Duration & Preparation 45 minutes (group lesson); music instrument is not included. Min. 3 students. Teacher(s) NIS Piano Make that fingers dancing on the ebony and ivory keys of the piano. Open for everyone with strong fingers, for beginners to intermediate level. Theory and practical will be covered during the lesson in one to one basis (private) 30 minutes lesson for P1 and older; younger kids will practice in a group. For who Nursery 1 – Primary 6 / Group 8. Duration & Preparation 30 minutes private lesson instrument is included. Students must be on time during the lesson hour. If a student comes late or does not show up, lesson time will not be extended / postponed. Parents are kindly asked to wait outside the class during the lesson. Students should bring a writing pad, pencil and eraser. A theory book, depending on the ability and the level of the Violin, saxophone, cello, flute participants, is excluded from the MANIS fee. To fully benefit from the lessons, students should be able to practice at home on a piano or a small keyboard. Teacher(s) Ms. Elsa Sigar has been a piano teacher at NIS since 1996 to date. The other teacher is Hitty Rumantir. Both teachers are highly educated in teaching and music and have a large variety of experience in the field of music. Page 2 Drums Making the groove by learning to play the drum, learn the trick to keep a constant beat while playing a cool rhythm that makes people dance. Open to everyone who can reach out the pedal, you must have your own pair of stick and a drum pad. We will learn the theory and practical in one to one basis (private) 30 minutes lesson. For who Primary 1 / Group 3 – Primary 6 / Group 8. Duration & Preparation 30 minutes (private lesson); instrument included, but students should have their own drumsticks and an earplug or headphones for ear safety during the lesson. Teacher(s) NIS School Band If you are dreaming to be a band member, but have limited skills, don’t worry. Let’s make it happen and join the group of student musicians and make harmony together. This group activities requires minimum of 4 students from grade 3 and up. All participants must have an instruments and it’s supportive equipment (ie: amplifier). For who Primary 4 – Primary 6 / Group 5 - Group 8 Duration & Preparation 45 minutes; students should bring their own instrument (apart from drum or keyboard). Teacher(s) NIS Page 3 Music Time! Music Time class is a musical activity session for Nursery and young Kindergarten children. The main goal is simply the pure enjoyment of music through (English) songs, finger-plays, movement to music, exploring musical instruments, group circle dances and parachute play to music. The activities will also promote the development of listening, concentration, social skills & early musical skills For who Nursery 1 – Kindergarten 2 / Group 2. Duration & Preparation 30 minutes; materials included. Teacher(s) NIS Violin, saxophone, cello, concert flute , recorder If your child is interested in learning how to play the violin, saxophone, cello, flute or in improving his or her skills, then join one (or more!) of the excellent music lessons, provided by Music Temple. Music Temple is based in Jakarta, where the music scene is filled with cultural fusion and liveliness. Over the years they have become the premier music lessons service for expats & international communities in Indonesia. In addition, they have also worked with other international schools in Jakarta. To join this music lesson program, students must have an instrument to practice regularly outside class time. An instrument can be rented per term. Teacher(s) Music Temple Page 4 Sport By signing up to this activity, participants will have a better understanding of all facets of badminton improving their skills and hand eye co-ordination. Duration & Preparation Teacher(s) NIS Yoga for Kids Yoga for Kids is a great introduction for your child into the world of yoga poses, positive breathing and a healthy lifestyle. Our lessons will be a fun filled half hour where the children will learn to stretch their bodies in new ways, as animals, nature and other objects come to life through asanas (yoga poses). Yoga is known to be beneficial for flexibility, balance, coordination, confidence, concentration and focus. These benefits also apply when children take part in yoga. Our yoga lesson will give your child the opportunity to channel their energy, learn how to relax and build their confidence as they tackle some challenging moves, all whilst have fun and giggles with their teachers and peers For who Nursery 2 – Kindergarten 1 / Group 1. Teacher(s) NIS Page 5 SuperSkills Soccer This term our weekdays Soccer training is provided by SuperSkills Soccer. SuperSkills teach the secrets to expert dribbling and complete ball mastery. At NIS SuperSkills the 60-100 minutes lessons have ball mastery aspects as well as a team play aspect. SuperSkills believes that agility is a main component in athletic development. Agile athletes in every sport are the most skilled and dominating athletes. Their goal is to clearly empower the students by helping them turn into excellent athletes. Everybody is constantly improving and nobody gets left behind. SuperSkills uses a Progressive Belt system; this innovative approach modeling the Marshall Arts format of belts gives students clear indications of their present ability as well as defined targets for their future development. There is also the opportunity to participate against others at regularly at invitational competitions so that the students can compare themselves to others at alternative venues. Participants need indoor and outdoor shoes; the training will take place both in the large PE hall and soccer field. Please also bring a small snack, water bottle and towel. Teacher(s) SuperSkills Combat Challenge Combat Challenge is a martial arts-inspired workout. Punch and kick your way to fitness, no experience needed!Learn moves from Muay Thai, boxing, Judo and Brazilian jujitsu. Have a blast and feel like a champ! For who Primary 4 – Primary 6 / Group 6 – Group 8 Duration & Preparation 45 minutes; children should bring their sports outfit, indoor sports shoes, a bottle of water and a towel. Teacher(s) NIS Page 6 Taekwondo Taekwondo is an excellent choice for children who are keen on physical activity and want to learn self-protection skills. Classes will be divided into age groups. The team from the MATRA Taekwondo will teach your child(ren) basic taekwondo skills with an emphasise on practical self-defense skills (Hosinsul), sparring (Olympic style kyorugi) and forms (series of movement or Poomsae). For who Kindergarten 1 / Group 1 – Primary 6 / Group 8. Duration & Preparation 60 minutes (group activity); a special taekwondo uniform, excluded from the MANIS fee, should be purchased. Teacher(s) Mr. Andre Tarwajan is a Taekwondo Instructor for children, self-defence and elite competition athlete trainer since 1988. He works also as a taekwondo Examiner, National Coach Level Instructor and a PE teacher. Gymnastics is an ancient sport that is the basis of many other sports. The benefits of physical activity for health and well-being are well-known. For children, it is not only limited to their physical development, but also for their mind and social development. Gymnastics Jak’05 provides gymnastics classes at NIS based on an Australian gymnastic program. It seeks to enhance total body strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, self-discipline and self-confidence in a safe environment. Gymnastic The main focus for the 5 to 7 year old program is to instil interest and enthusiasm in the sport of gymnastics. Participants will work on some basic gymnastics moves including forward and backward rolls. The content of the class changes each week to ensure variety and fun. The older students will also learn basic gymnastics skills and build these into a simple routine incorporating handstands, cartwheels, and bridges, forward and backward rolls. Flexibility and strengthening exercises are also done. For who Nursery 1 - Kindergarten 1 / Group 1; Kindergarten 2 / Group 2 – Primary 6 / Group 8. Page 7 Swimming The goal of the NIS MANIS swimming programme is to ensure that each child will pass the swim diploma exam and acquire the Dutch Swim Diploma Certificates that they apply for. The necessary skills include survival swim and swim strokes. But feel free to enrol also if you like your child to improve his or her swimming skills! We divided the swimming group into the following groups: • Water Confidence 1 and 2 (with parents) • • Certificate Swim 1 and 2 • • Diploma A • • Diploma B • • Diploma C Zwemvaardigheid 1 Zwemvaardigheid 2 Zwemvaardigheid 3 Sharks Swim Squad Water Confidence: gain confidence in water; develop gross motor skills; equip children with survival skills in both shallow and deep water. Certificate Swimming: water jump from the side or from a raft; able to sit /lie on the bottom of the pool; swim underneath a floating object (and swim for 2 meters); belly and back float; upright driving for 10 seconds; float with a ball (balloon) for 20 seconds Diploma / Zwemvaardigheid: For the exact requirement for Diploma swimming and “Zwemvaardigheid” we refer to the website of the “Nationaal Platform Zwembaden” (www.npz-nrz.nl). Sharks Swim Squad: Participants can join the Sharks Swim Squad from age 7 years onwards and should be able to swim at least 2 competitive strokes for 25 meters. For who Toddlers – Primary 6 / Group 8; depending on level / course (see MANIS schedule). Duration & Preparation 30 - 45 minutes (group activity); all participants need to be equipped with proper swimsuits, a towel and a sun block. Please note that during all swimming lessons participants should at all times be accompanied by an adult (parent or nanny). Also, accompanying siblings and/or friends should be watched over by an adult (parent or nanny). For Sharks group, please take these following items with you: - Black swimsuit - Swim cap - Swim goggles - Water bottle Teacher(s) Mr Felipe is a swim coach at NIS for more than 9 years. Besides he works as Head Swim Coach for Shark swim squad at ACG. Additionally, he works at the American Embassy Recreation Club as Head Swim Coach and is a personal trainer for triathletes and diplomats for over 10 years. Page 8 Dance courses Hip Hop Our Hip Hop classes are packed with specially choreographed, kid-friendly routines set to the music they love and incorporate other movement activities/games all designed to assist in the development of fitness, self –confidence, concentration, creativity, co-ordination and other transferable skills. At the end of term, participants will also be invited to perform their routines on stage, giving you the opportunity to see what they have learned. Hip Hop Little Stars. This class is suitable for younger participants with easy to follow routines and incorporating themes, games and props that encourage creativity, self-expression and self-confidence. Hip Hop Big Stars. A class that is suitable for older children who are able to quickly learn routines and moves. For who Kindergarten 1 – Primary 1 / Group 1 – 3 (Little Stars); Primary 2 / Group 4 – Primary 6 / Group 8 (Big Stars). Duration & Preparation 30 minutes for Little Stars - 45 minutes for Big Stars (all group activity lessons); Participants should wear comfortable clothing (suitable for a work-out) along with footwear such as comfortable gym or tennis shoes, plimsolls and trainers. It is best to avoid something heavy or with too much thread, as this will hinder twisting and turning movements. Crocs and sandals are not suitable for class. All participants should also bring a water bottle. Please note that accompanying adults (parents or nanny’s), siblings and/or friends are kindly requested to wait outside in the lobby. Teacher(s) United Dance Works Glee Club Our Glee Club is for Primary students who meet once per week to sing and perform solos and group songs. Singers and dancers of all ability levels are welcome! The group has a lot of fun singing together, sharing songs with one another. Students will also learn to explore their voice. and preparing songs to perform at assemblies or at lunch Students will learn to explore their voice and learn songs together. Like the TV Show Glee, this group meets to share their love of music and performance. Come and join!! Teacher(s) NIS Page 9 Ballet Have you always been dreaming of becoming a ballet dancer? Now you will have a great opportunity to try a classic dance in a fun, creative and encouraging environment. You will learn the basic concepts, rhythms, and positions of ballet, in addition to enhance your improvisational and partnering skills. Musicality, expressiveness, focus and self-discipline are encouraged at all times For who Nursery 2 – Primary 3 / Nursery 2 - Group 4 Duration & Preparation 45 minutes (group activity); students need to buy a leotard that is excluded from the MANIS fee. By the end of the term, a small ballet performance will be presented to all parents. Teacher(s) Ms. Novi is a well-experienced Ballet Teacher, and is teaching Ballet at NIS for many years. Creative courses Global Art Global Art & Creative Jakarta nurtures children’s passion for art by providing the best environment and the right methods of learning. The courses are designed for children aged 4 years old and above. The Global Art & Creative Programs comprise of several carefully designed levels to allow children of ages 4 to 12 to participate and enjoy our courses progressively. Page 10 Art Club (Junior & Regular) Art Club is for children who enjoy exploring their creativity. At our Art club children learn to develop different artistic techniques working with a variety of different mediums; painting, drawing, sculpting, collage and working with natural materials. Teacher(s) NIS Bricks for Kidz At Bricks 4 Kidz, they believe it’s important to tap into a child’s potential by encouraging their curiosity and creativity in and out of the classroom. Their fun-filled model plans designed by engineers and architects, teach children to learn with LEGO® Bricks. Bricks 4 Kidz offers two programs: The Junior Program is suitable for children at the age of 2-4 years old. The objective of this program is for children to recognize the letter of the week (A-Z), recognizing colors, counting, identifying key terms such as (same and different, bigger, smaller, next to, on top of), sorting, patterning, following simple directions. The other program focuses on theme based project kits that motivate children by reinforcing S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) based principles while enhancing self-esteem, improving fine-motor skills, and teaching important classroom lessons such as organization and following directions. Skills Mandarin for Beginners Mandarin Chinese is quite a complex language to learn. However, with commitment and daily practice it is certainly possible to successfully master. Mandarin Chinese is a tonal language, which means that different tones can change the meaning of a word, even if the pronunciation and spelling are otherwise the same. In this Beginners course you will be introduced to the different aspects of the language such as the characters, the pronunciation and intonation. Teacher(s) Mr. Hassan Page 12 Young Journalist Club A fun new activity added to our MANIS program is our Young Journalist Club (YJC). Students will write, edit and collate our very own School Newspaper. First we learn the basics of writing good articles, lay out, how to search for news, etc. Later we will also teach students how to compose a Newspaper, a written version as well as a digital one (own website!) For who Primary 2 – Primary 6 / Group 4 – Group 8 Duration & Preparation 45 minutes; materials included. Teacher(s) NIS Green Thumb Club Students in the Green Thumb Club will learn how to cultivate an organic food garden at NIS. Students will take a part in every aspect of the garden: they will create the garden space, plant the seedlings in the ground, help with the weeding and water the garden. Finally, the students will harvest the vegetables and herbs of their labor and sell their products to raise money for a charity of their choosing. For who Primary 4 – Primary 6 / Group 6 – Group 8. For who Primary 2 – Primary 6 / Group 4-Group 8 Duration & Preparation 45 minutes; NIS will provide a pen and a notebook (and copies if necessary). Social Skills trainings should best be given in the mother tongue. Therefore we will split participants into two groups: a Dutch and English speaking group. Minimum participants per group is 4 in order to ensure group dynamics. Teacher(s) NIS Parental courses Zumba / Fitness Zumba fitness classes feature easy to follow dance/fitness routines set to high-energy Latin and international beats. Before you know it, you will be getting fit and your energy levels will be soaring. There’s no other fitness class like a Zumba Fitness-Party – a great way to kick start your morning, right after you have brought the kids to school. Duration & Preparation 60 minutes (group activity); once a week; Participants should wear comfortable clothing (suitable for a work-out) along with footwear such as comfortable gym or tennis shoes, plimsolls and trainers. Teacher(s) Ms. Liza and Ms. Affiah ( Liza Natalia Arena ). Page 14 Yoga If you are willing to have a balance for your body, mind and soul, yoga might be a good option for you. It also teaches us to become fully-aware of our own being, making us realise when to slow down and when to speed up. Yoga consists of physical exercise, breathing exercise and relaxation: Physical exercises include forward bends, side bends, back bends, twisting, balancing, and inversion. Breathing exercise teaches us to do deep and conscious breathing in order to maximize lung capacity. In a stressful situation, proper breathing can soothe our nervous system. On the other hand, we can also use our breath to energize our body. Relaxation is the time when the body integrates the benefits of the practice. This enables the body and mind to be in a quiet state, which leads it to experience peace, calm, and self-awareness. Duration & Preparation 75 minutes (group activity) : once or twice a week. Please bring your own yoga mat, a towel and a bottle of water. Wear something comfortable, exercise pants and tops, and avoid having full breakfast 2 hours before the class. If there is some information regarding your health, please inform Ms. Meity before joining the class. Teacher(s) Ms. Meity will give yoga lessons for parents twice a week at NIS. She is a fully trained and highly experienced yoga teacher. Dutch for Beginners Dutch is the mother tongue of over 21 million people: almost all of the inhabitants of The Netherlands, about half of the people living in Belgium (those living in Flanders or "Vlaanderen"), and many inhabitants of former Dutch colonies like Indonesia and Surinam. And... half of our student population is of Dutch origin! The aim of this course is to provide you with some basic knowledge of Dutch and to obtain some basic knowledge of Dutch grammar and vocabulary, enough to read simple texts written in that language and to start a conversation. Teacher(s) NIS Page 15 Bahasa Indonesia for Beginners Bahasa Indonesia is the national language of the Republic of Indonesia. It unites the over 230 million people of Indonesia, whose native tongue may be one of the over 300 distinct languages or regional dialects. When living in Indonesia, learning/speaking Bahasa Indonesia is highly recommended. Indonesians are appreciative of foreigners that make the effort to learn Bahasa Indonesian and build relationships with them. So let us introduce you to the Indonesian national language! Learning all the swim drills, such as long and short distance swimming for sports or personal fitness, helps improve your overall flexibility and cardiovascular fitness Duration & Preparation 45 minutes (group activity). The class is open for all swim levels: beginners, intermediate and advance swimming abilities. Supervised Hour For those students whose MANIS activity will start at 3.00pm, NIS offers a free of charge supervised transfer period of one hour between end of school time and start of the MANIS activity in which they can do their homework, reed a book or play some games. Please note that a parent or a friend should bring the child to the appointed class room (will be announced later). Children need to be picked up again before 3.00 to guide them to the MANIS activity. We ask parents to register in advance and for a full term, so the supervising teacher or teaching assistant knows whom to expect each week. Page 17
