2013 Spring Colloquium Description
Description
(This is a full year colloquium.)
"Pay It Foward" is an expression used to do good for
other people without expecting anything in return;
rather, you hope that that person does something good
for other people, and so on.
This colloquium will focus on ways to pay it forward in
our school and community. This colloquium is calling
on dynamic students who have a big heart and who
love to give.
This colloquium is limited to 20 students. We will be using CTA many times throughout the
colloquium meetings so please anticipate some cost for transportation.
The colloquium will be offered year long, but students may switch in or out at the end of the
first semester. i.e. new students may join in the second semester
Paper Craft
Hahn
Paper Craft is a form of visual/sculptural representation that is
defined primarily by the paper folding. You can fold sheets of
paper into animals, picture frames, or flowers. Paper craft
brings out the nature of paper through folding and gluing; one
can only elicit the paper’s potential by exploring this art
form. This class is best suited for students who are interested
in creation through model-making and cooperative learning.
Foods From

Students will work in teams to research, prepare and try dishes from
various regions around the world. We will emphasize easy preparation
and balanced nutritional meals. Each team will be in charge of preparing
different recipes as they rotate the type of food and regions from week to
week. We will cook in teams and complete the colloquium with a full set
of recipes that students may take home.
Materials: Students need to bring ingredients and may bring special utensils.

2013 Spring Colloquium Description
Description
In this colloquium we will focus on the practice and science of
cardiovascular, weight training, and meditative fitness. You’ll
complete physical activities for each area every session, charting
your gains as the semester progresses. As a group we will jog/run,
bike on the stationary bicycles, lift weights, and conclude each
session with a meditation. Each student will research, prepare, and present a topic to the
class throughout the semester covering the scientific benefits of a well-balanced lifestyle
and diet.
Do you enjoy playing board games? Could you see yourself
playing, building and designing board games for a living? Do you
have an idea for a great game? Are you creative, inquisitive,
strong willed and reliable? Come meet with a current toy and
game designer and hear what goes into developing and selling a
game in today’s marketplace. We will learn to develop, build and
pitch our own creations while learning about the intricacies of
dealing with game manufacturers and the role of social media in
the game world.

The website horrorfilmhistory.com writes the following: “The modern
horror genre as we know it is only around 200 years old (it begins to
have form and conventions towards the end of the eighteenth century)
but it has distinguished antecedents. Every culture has a set of stories
dealing with the unknown and unexplained, tales that chill, provoke
and keep the listener wondering ‘what if..?’ Horror [stories] are the
present-day version of the epic poems and ballads told round the fires
of our ancestors.” This colloquium examines horror across the
decades and across subgenres. Students will read and
discuss horror texts (poems, short stories, tales), students will view
and discuss representations of horror in art, and students will watch and
discuss horror films. Mainly, students will examine what it is that frightens us, titillates us,
and makes us want to scream in scary delight. Students will research horror across
decades and lead classroom discussions. Students must be able to watch Rated R films
and engage in mature discussions about the genre. Only open to students who have NOT
taken Mr. Snow’s Bildungsroman or Satire colloquium in the past because of the repeat of
some content.

2013 Spring Colloquium Description
Description
The current horde of zombified cultural artifacts and events
include children’s books, apocalyptic 5K races, revised versions of
Victorian novels, entire volumes of undead arts and crafts
projects, and more movies in the last decade than had previously
existed throughout the rest of movie history. Why? For starters,
zombie movies speak to us about gender, race, class, technology,
consumerism, and religion. They allow us to think scary thoughts
while safely entombed in cultural kitsch. We see ourselves and
our society reflected in the crimson sheen of fake blood, and with
the undead arise truths about our culture’s deepest and most
secret fears. Join us – and be ready to use your BRAAAAAINS! – to examine the
symbolism and cultural commentary rampant in zombie pop culture. Activities will include
screening and discussion of zombie movies, developing and practicing your Zombie
Survival Plan, Zombie Show & Tell, Zombie Book Club and Zombie Makeup Day (Northside,
beware!). NOTE: A permission slip is required for participation in this colloquium.

2013 Spring Colloquium Description
Description
In this colloquium you will various aspects of Chen Family Taijiquan
including stretching, fundamental training, and the “Canon-Fist” form.
Taijiquan, commonly known as T’ai Chi, is an ancient martial art
originating in a small rural village of Henan, China. The art was
created by Chen Wang Ting in the late 17th century by combining the
most effective martial training of the day with elements of Chinese
medicine and Taoist philosophical principals. Today, Taijiquan is well
known for its health benefits. The art is a complete system including
four traditional “empty-hand” forms, nine weapons training forms, and
two training programs for self-defense. Taijiquan is a rigorous
physical and mental training system that is challenging and very
rewarding. If you are interested in a form of exercise with profound cultural and historical
significance, this is a colloquium for you!

scene shop to the sound booth- from the pit to the catwalk- students will learn
about the equipment and how to maintain it. Also we will be revamping and
rebuilding all the shop and storage areas.
Greune
In this colloquium, students will gain an understanding
of the interaction between the natural environment and
people by learning farming, sustainable landscaping,
water conservation, environmental stewardship, and
responsibility and leadership skills. They will work on
the Northside Teaching Farm, a 2-acre mixed use
recreation and agricultural space that features s
decorative plantings and vegetable gardens, natural
drainage systems, a wetland, a playing field, trees and
grass areas, a greenhouse, large agricultural areas
and community garden plots. The food they grow goes to the hungry through food pantries,
as well as to their families, and land they shape and care for serves their fellow students
and community. Their work creates spaces for outdoor classrooms and instruction by
teachers, during the school year, as well as healthy playspace and interest in the
environment.
Students will be expected to work in the farm. They must be dressed appropriately for every

Description
Good
Piece will take the mission we started
with into another exciting year. With
some new directions, we will continue
to make a difference by developing
local service projects. Guided by
student research, planning,
collaboration, and energy, the group will
identify particular problems, and then
devise strategies and projects to help address them in practical and tangible ways. We also
plan to add a new twist this year: integrating art projects, into our service ideas. Our goal is
to construct a mural along the blank wall next to Lawrence Stop on the CTA Brown Line. We
will be working with the local alderman, civic leaders, and public arts groups—but our
success depends on what members find out and decide. So if you want to expand your
horizons; to take a look at life outside your comfort zone; and to join others in working
toward solutions, then Piece might be the colloquium you’re waiting for.

McCormick
Both the realm of the sciences and world of literature engender
numerous possibilities for the mind. This colloquium will bridge these
spheres by exploring the history of both science fiction and speculative
fiction as genres of literature and film. Students will examine the roles
that modern science and speculation have played in literature, from the
seventeenth century onward, and apply their findings to several classic
examples of literature and film that are typically deemed ‘science fiction’
as well as to some that don’t neatly fit into the genre. Some outside
reading is required.

Description
Volesky
In this yearlong colloquium, students will experience the art of
beekeeping firsthand by taking care of Northside’s own
honeybee hives at the North Park Village Nature Center.
Students will start the year by harvesting honey from the
existing bees at the Nature Center and will begin building a
Langstroth hive during the winter. Upon the spring, students will
install the hive and will monitor honeybee activity. Other
activities include crafting beeswax candles and learning about
Colony Collapse Disorder of the honeybees. Sponsored by Ms.
Volesky and Ms. Ortiz, this colloquium will accept 20 students
and requires parental consent. Due to health risks, students with a bee allergy are strongly
discouraged from participating.

2013 Spring Colloquium Description
Description
This course will be an exploration into many of the world’s musical
cultures -- from Northern India’s Hindustani music, made “popular” by
the late Pandit Ravi Shankar, to the steppes of the Gobi desert in
Mongolia where a distinct throat singing style has taken root. We’ll
explore the British Invasion and how it shaped rock n roll and take a
look at the role music played in the United States during the 60s and
70s. From hip hop culture to punk culture; Afrobeat to Desert Blues; this
colloquium will offer you an array of unique glimpses into all things
world music and culture.
Forever and always we will look ahead,
beyond our current vantage and onto a sight
more beautiful and distant: The future. Its
arrival is unquestionable and solid, and it's
perpetual coming drives progress in humanity.
In this colloquium, the learned Lindseius
Denegal Caplice, Grand Poobah of the
celestial continuum, will guide the eager
collective in our exploration of the beloved
unknown tense. We will study and attempt to predict possible future scenarios and
outcomes. We will trace back present day trends and technologies in order to attempt to
predict the direction of future trends and technologies. We will read, journal, make, sketch,
think, and perform ours and other people’s theories, predictions, thoughts, ideas and
reflections. "What is coming?" you ask, "There! That is what's coming".

So what do Frogs and Roast Beef have in
common? Well, they are just outdated
stereotypes that the French and English
respectively have for one another. But
anyway, are you a fan of English and
French culture? Are you interested in
examining historical and contemporary pop
culture of France and the United Kingdom?
This semester, we will look at these two
countries’ complex relationship in the past and present. We will look at similarities in topics
such as social stratification in Downton Abbey and French media/literature and humor in
sitcoms i.e. The Office (UK) and Le Bureau. We will look at social behaviors, etiquette and
perhaps engage in some of their leisure hobbies such scrapbooking and afternoon tea. If
you love BBC America and brie, join us for Frogs and Roast beef.

contended the second. A Zen master, who happened to be walking by,
overheard the debate and interrupted them. "Neither the flag nor the wind
is moving," he said, "It is MIND that moves."
Are you interested in working toward inner peace, self-discipline, and
experiencing a sense of awe? What about thinking outside the box,
learning to live in the present moment, and looking beyond what you think you know? Are
you also interested philosophy, nature, international cultures, beautifying our school
grounds and the city of Chicago?
We will be working over the next year to create a Zen garden for our school grounds. This
is your chance to do something of value, for the school and surrounding community. Are
you ready for a colloquium that may just be life changing?

2013 spring coll description for students.doc
Killing fields, dirty wars, death squads. Such terms conjure
images of some of the darkest--and most fascinating--episodes
in our history since World War II. Though it’s tempting to try and
forget these stories, film-makers have made certain that we
can’t. By creating dramatic, gut-wrenching, and—often—very
realistic films, they return us to the scene of the crime and
broadcast these gripping narratives to worldwide audiences.
The movies themselves sometimes spark lively public debate, or even genuine
efforts to come to terms with the original crisis. This colloquium will use films such as
Missing, The Killing Fields, and Cry Freedom as a springboard to examine these
periods of dictatorship, genocide, and human rights abuse. But we’ll take it a step
beyond choosing, researching, watching, and judging the accuracy of the films;
we’ll also explore how survivors and others have reacted to and learned from these
crises, sometimes establishing organizations, museums, and other strategies for
learning from these tragedies and dodging their recurrence. WARNING: these films,
in their realism, can include some disturbingly violent scenes. This colloquium may
not be for you if you’d rather avoid this. A permission slip is required for participation in
this colloquium.
