Although there were the usual vans and trucks at the August 9th
Centreville, Michigan, Antique Show, two dealers -- arrived as one visitor put it
-- “with some real style.”
Foot traffic halted for a closer look at the vintage 1969 Pontiac Catalina convertible at the booth of Leroy Brenneman of South Bend, Indiana. The pocket
watch and jewelry dealer was chauffeured to the fairgrounds event by 19-year-old
grandson Jared Basker of South Bend.
James Cooper of Grand Haven,
Brenneman said he purchased the rag top in1974 and when many times was
asked if it was for sale. The answer was a friendly “No, but enjoy the look.” The Michigan, showed off fine glassware
including an 11” inch diameter
speedometer shows what he called “50,900 original miles.”

Mid-Century Furnishings & Much More at June 29th
Beloit Auction & Realty Wednesday Night Sale
Article & photos by Brian Maloney
Quality and Variety - the two things folks expect when they attend a Beloit
Auction & Realty sale. They most certainly weren’t disappointed at their June 29th
evening event, where attendees got the chance to bid on everything from MidCentury Modern furniture and fine art to some exceptional vintage Oriental rugs.
Beloit Auction & Realty, located just west of the downtown business district, has built
a loyal following in their thirty-plus years in the business, conducting weekly
Wednesday night sales at their dedicated auction gallery, plus numerous on-site real
estate and specialty auctions.
Pat Ranft with the automotive winner
of the evening: a 1989 Chevrolet Corvette
that drove off for $3,600.
It took a $375 bid to win this 10k gold
& colored stone ladies bracelet.

A $190 bid won this Peoples Beer
light-up cash register clock.
Top lot of the
stoneware was this
rare 5” Red Wing
sponge-ware bowl
that made $400.
Fine art winner of the
evening: this unsigned
19th century
pastoral scene
that fetched $950.

Out & About
Have a wonderful
Labor Day weekend!
Lately everyone keeps saying the same thing.
I cannot believe it is September already.
Where did the summer go? I feel the same
way, sure did feel like summer was short.
Maybe because we didn’t seem to have that many really hot days?
Maybe because we were having so much fun antiquing that we lost track
of the days. However it may be, I hope to this unofficial end of summer
that everyone had a wonderful time spent with family, making lots of
memories and lots of antiquing treasures that were found.

Monday, September 7th at 12 (noon) for paper mailed Wednesday, September 9th
First day of school!! How they grow before our eyes.
Brandon is now taller than his sisters & has yet to really go through
his growth spurt. He just turned 14 on Monday, August 31st. I had to
bake him a cake just like his Grandmother made him. He said mine
was a close second, but not as good as hers. On a funny note, as we were trying to hide it to surprise
him, the dog found it & ate half of the cake. The exciting news, his Grandpa & Grandma bought
him a ‘79 MGB to fix up within the next two years for his car. Guess who lives in the garage now!
Brandon did report that high school is “actually pretty fun”. The girls went right to work after school.

Zurko’s Centreville Antique Show Draws Dealers & Buyers
from Around the Midwest
Article & photos by Jack Kelly
Cell phone cameras also came out for the restored “canned ham” 10’ long 1963
Scotty Sportsman travel trailer -with color coordinated sunshade. The retro rig,
owned by Nick and Pam Donis of Edwardsburg was purchased in Alabama and still
sported the Alabama license plates.
The couple offered an eclectic mix of antiques and collectables including a custom
made 1920s Baroque era 100 percent silk wedding dress for $80 and a 6’ long CocaCola refrigerated pop cooler that could cool drinks at your place for $750.
If cold beer was on your mind, you might have stopped by the booth of Len Adams
of Scotts, Mich., for a look at his long and lanky plastic Blatz Beer advertising festoon that spelled out the famous brew one letter at a time, priced at $85.
Adams said he was doing “brisk business from the $1.00- item-table,” adding he
had sold more than $900 worth at another show a week ago “one dollar at a time.”
Attorneys and art lovers “oohed and aahed” at the 1980s 5’ tall blind lady of justice full figure bronze shown by Rex Goble of Crown Pointe, Ind., and priced at
$2,000. Hanging nearby in his booth was a 10x 50-inch porcelain 1940s Coca-Cola
sign tagged at $500.
Toy collectors hovered around at least two booths at the fairground show. Orvel
Miller of Fort Wayne, Ind., pointed to two pressed steel trucks -- a 1928 Keystone
fire truck with water tower for $1,850, and a 1932 Buddy L dump truck with high
and low beam headlamps could be taken home for $1,200. It was the third time setting up at Centreville for Miller.
Fairground show regular Jim Dykstra of Coldwater, Mich., also showed toys
including a pressed steel 1950s Lumar Utility Service truck with pole carrier trailer,
priced at $159. At the same spot, a 1930s tin Keystone Radio Optician photo projector could light up your favorite prints for $69.
After 30 years as firefighter in Texas, Donn Hicks now calls Three Rivers, near
Centreville, his home. He showed off - you guessed it -- vintage firefighter collectables. Four different 1970-80s fireman helmets were priced from $125 to $150 each.
A mid-1800s brass fireman's trumpet some 18” long could be displayed, or played,
for $75.
Vintage fish lure collectors swarmed around the booth of Bill Brown to check out
a selection of more than 60 examples circa 1940 to 1960s, priced from $7 to $165
each. At the same spot, Hall dish collectors looked over 160 “hard to find Crocus
pattern” examples offered for $6 to $45 each.
“I love the compact design and the atmosphere of this show,” said 25 year
Centreville show veteran Carol Lindsey of Delton, Mich. She pointed with pride to
an unusual 45” long original early 1800s hand-painted wood immigrant's trunk
tagged at $395. Many people stopped to admire her 16” tall pewter construction
Egyptian Revival 1870s swivel water server which she said was “inspired by the
opening of the Suez Canal.” It could grace your table for $195.
Still another Centreville regular, 26-year veteran James Cooper, showed his usual
selection of fine glassware including an 11 1/2” diameter 1950-60s Anchor Hocking
press-cut panel bowl priced at $140. That example was just one of “dozens of pieces
of all ages and prices” to be found at his 33 foot long spot at West Michigan Antique
Mall near Grand Haven.
“It came from the Drafter Inn, in the Michigan Upper Peninsula,” said Susi Bostrum
of Gun Lake, Mich., gesturing to a 55” long booth-type restaurant bench with upholstered back and seat, priced at $75. An “all porcelain” waist high kitchen cabinet
could be taken from the show for $50. The dealer said she visits Centreville at least
once every year, calling attention to “a good show with some nice people.”
“He always brings oddball nifty stuff,” said one shopper pointing to the multiple
booths of Paul Funk of Funks Junk, Waldron, Mich. “It's 63 inches tall and pretty
neat,” said Funk pointing to a hand carved piece featuring herons birds with open
beaks pointing to the sky. The art piece could grace your home for $300. Gas station collectors admired his 30” tall Naxon Service Station Island tin water container
on wheels with hand-crank wringer that could be rolled into your garage for $225.
“We were blessed with sunshine and clear blue skies,” said one early morning
shopper walking onto the fairgrounds, adding, “we might even use an umbrella -- for
shade, but not for rain.”
Show promoter Bob Zurko said he was very happy with the show and even
offered this bit of philosophy: “Life is short! Put in your time wisely, try to have fun
and antique hard!
The final Centreville Show of the season will be held at the Centreville, Mich.,
fairgrounds on Oct. 11. 2015.

Beloit Auction & Realty - A Wisconsin Auction Institution for
More Than Thirty-Five Years
Article & photos by Brian Maloney
Some other prices:
For lots of area antiques enthusiasts, Wednesday evenings just wouldn’t be the
same without the weekly United Country Beloit consignment auction. You never
know what you’ll find on any given Wednesday. One week might feature period furnishings, the next tools or vintage automobiles. And one sale each month is reserved
for the nicest antique & collectible consignments - like this June 29th sale I attended.
And although all of Beloit Auction & Realty’s Wednesday night auctions feature a
wide mix of items, this one had a distinctively Mid-Century feel. No “big name”
pieces this time - just a nice selection of quality vintage furnishings from tables,
chairs, and chaises to funky finds like a European Philips console stereo.
Many in the crowd came for a chance to bid on the dozen-plus period oil paintings, both European and American. A classic 19th century pastoral scene appeared
unsigned, but still managed a $950 winning bid. A work by American Surrealist artist
Harold C. Kimball was a nice buy at $210.
Other auction highlights ranged from a group of pre-WWII Oriental rugs that sold
for up to $550 each to the night’s automotive winner: a red 1989 Corvette that rolled
off for $3,600. All of the near-300 lots were on their way home with new owners
within a few hours, thanks to the efficient Beloit Auction staff.

Beloit Auction & Realty has been serving southern Wisconsin’s auction needs for
more than thirty-five years, conducting weekly Wednesday evening auctions at their
dedicated auction facility in downtown Beloit. And while red Corvettes don’t cross
the block here every week, there’s always something interesting at every Beloit
Auction & Realty sale. They also conduct many real estate and business liquidation
auctions, plus specialty auctions of all sorts. They can be reached at 877-364-1965.
Be sure to bookmark their website too, www.beloitauction.com, for the latest
information on all their upcoming auctions. Many of their antique and collectible
auctions can be previewed online as well. You can leave an absentee bid, or bid in
“real time” on auction night if you want. And as always, keep an eye out for all of
their upcoming auctions in the Auction Action Antique News! Continued on page 17

World War Trade Cards
Although there have been, and continue to be, many books written on a wide variety of aspects of the First World War, this work not only approaches the history of
the war from a unique perspective, but also comprehensively covers many of these
aspects. Utilizing cards from the extensive, remarkably detailed and mostly contemporaneous issues of cigarette and trade card sets related to the First World War,
the author provides a richly illustrated and descriptive tapestry of this great conflict. Not only are the usual political and armed services aspects of the war covered
in detail, but also the many other less covered parts receive attention. These latter
include regal aspects, and other components of the military such as armamentarium, awards, uniforms and militaria. Then the important role that propaganda
played is also covered. The social and literary aspects of the war form an important part of the book. All these written details, a significant amount of which is
drawn from the descriptions on the cards, complement the hundreds of card illustrations found throughout the work.

National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and
Museum Coming to Milwaukee, WI
The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, which will be located in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, will display the world’s largest collection of bobbleheads
and bobblehead-related exhibits and be the premier source of bobblehead related
news and information online (http://www.bobbleheadhall.com) and at the Museum.
Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Today, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and
Museum announced its establishment and intention to locate in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin. The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum will display the
world’s largest collection of bobbleheads and bobblehead-related exhibits and be
the premier source of bobblehead related news and information online
(http://www.bobbleheadhall.com) and at the Museum.
“We are very excited to bring such a unique attraction to the great city of
Milwaukee. The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum will be a fun
venue for collectors, fans and visitors to experience all things bobble-related,” said
Phil Sklar, the Hall of Fame and Museum’s Co-Founder and CEO. “Milwaukee is
such a unique city with a long sports history, making it a perfect location for collectors and fans around the world to gather for the ultimate bobblehead experience.”
Museum members will receive exclusive benefits including a limited edition bobblehead of the Hall’s Mascot, which will be created through a national competition.
The first 1,500 members will receive an individually numbered gold jersey edition
of the Founding Member Bobblehead, with the next 18,500 members receiving the
white jersey edition. Memberships include several perks in addition to exclusive
access to online content and unlimited Museum admission. Members will have the
honor of voting to induct the most unique bobbleheads into the Bobblehead Hall of
Fame on an annual basis.
“The excitement and membership pre-sales during the pre-launch efforts have been
tremendous, and we are excited to officially announce the National Bobblehead
Hall of Fame and Museum to the world,” said Brad Novak, the Hall of Fame and
Museum’s Co-Founder and President. “Becoming a member or helping to fund the
Museum through the Museum’s Kickstarter campaign will help us build the highest
quality Hall of Fame and Museum possible.”
The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum is still evaluating several
potential locations in Milwaukee. In addition to the Hall of Fame and Museum
space, plans include ample room for special events such as birthday parties, autograph signings, weddings and meetings and a store featuring bobbleheads and Hall
of Fame and Museum merchandise. Plans also include the Bobblehead Bar and Grill
featuring a bobblehead-themed, locally sourced menu.
“Brad and I have been collecting bobbleheads for over a decade and we look forward to sharing the world’s largest bobblehead collection as well as dozens of bobblehead-related exhibits with everyone,” said Mr. Sklar, who plans to open the physical National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum by 2016.

Antiques are Green Campaign: Good
Tie-In for Many Collecting Clubs
National Antique Week is promoted and celebrated in Great
Britain during the week of November 23-30, 2009. This
week long event with the theme Antiques are Green comes
at a pivotal time for the antiques trade when public and
media interest is heightened by campaigns such as
"Antiques are Green" spearheaded by Nigel Worboys and
the petition on "Antiques" designed to persuade the British
government to provide more support to the Fine Art and Antiques industry.
The Association of Collecting Clubs and National Association of Collectors have
become supporters of "Antiques are Green." We urge club leaders and partners to
visit Nigel Worboys' website: http://www.antiquesaregreen.org for excellent information on the concepts of tying the green movement into antiques and signing up as
a supporter.
The program has several aims. Some of these include:
* Antiques are Green aims to promote antiques as an alternative form of recycling
and conserving natural resources.
* Antiques are Green aims to encourage existing consumers and attract a new audience who may not have considered buying antiques before.
* Antiques are Green aims to encourage businesses and consumers on reducing
their carbon footprint, dependency on fossil fuel and becoming greener.
* By purchasing, conserving or selling antiques you contribute to these aims. By
signing up for "Antiques are Green" you become part of this vision. There is no cost
for signing up.
* The Windsor Chair - As described on the "Antiques are Green" website, the best
way to illustrate why antiques are green is by an example (this can be applied to
many different antiques) the humble Windsor chair. The chair parts were made by
craftsmen who lived in the woods where the materials came from. The turnings were
produced on treadle-operated lathes, then parts were taken on foot to a local workshop to be assembled. From there the completed chairs would be distributed around
the country by horse and cart or waterways. The chair saw hard use but is still around
today. What a green product and what a life cycle! By buying this chair to use again
we have conserved our natural resources and prevented the carbon footprint of
another chair being produced, that possibly would come all the way from the Far
East. I expect that a new mass produced chair will hit the waste dump long before
the antique Windsor chair is sold again at auction, goes to the restorers to be revived
and is retailed again for another 40 years use!
* By buying antiques and collectibles... and putting them into use, rather than buying a new product, is what "Antiques are Green" is all about. What a wonderful way
for collecting clubs, for antique malls, flea markets, shows and auction houses to promote "going green" to younger consumers and buyers. This is another approach for
reaching out to the young audience of 20-35 and showing how antiques can be an
integral part of their lives while helping the environment all at the same time.
* Finding antiques and decorative objects to decorate your living space or work
place is a great way to personalize your home or office and make it uniquely yours.
Furnishing or redecorating your first apartment or home with old objectives makes
economic sense, as well as "green sense."
* Vintage clothing... and clothing accessories are currently hot among young
adults. We're talking buttons, fabric, jewelry, hats - either to wear or as decoration.
Old advertising items and other graphic arts, movie posters and political posters,
kitchen items, pottery and glassware, toys, music-related items, old record players
and radios, old bottles, even vintage automobiles... the listing is endless, but can all
tie in to the Green about Antiques concept. It provides a great way for a lot of collecting clubs to reach out to young adults by encouraging their interest in collecting
in one or more of these areas by promoting the "eco-friendly" approach. These are
the buyers, investors and collectors of the future. Find ways your club can whet their
interest now.
As Nigel Worboys references on the "Antiques are Green" website, perhaps antiques
is the oldest recycling trade in the world - promoting and marketing antiques and collectibles as "Antiques are Green" only makes sense.

Red Wing Collectors Society
Creates Young Collectors Club
RED WING, MN – Do you know a collector between the ages of 15 and 20 who is
interested in history, art and collecting? If so, it's time to bring them to the Red Wing
Collectors Society (RWCS) Convention this summer. In celebration of the RWCS
35th Anniversary, a new Young Collectors Club has been developed for collectors
between the ages of 15 and 20 that will make its debut during the event. This program will be the next step for young collectors to continue learning about Red Wing
and its wares.
For many years, the RWCS faced the challenge of encouraging the next generation
to maintain its interest in Red Wing’s wares and the RWCS. Eleven years ago,
Wendy Callicoat and Sue Jones Tagliapietra, who at the time were members of the
RWCS Executive Board, developed the KidsView Educational Program at the
RWCS Convention to attract a younger generation of collectors to the RWCS.
“This program has developed into an exceptional part of the RWCS,” Callicoat says.
“We have seen many kids come to our seminars during summer Convention and
enjoy the activities of KidsView, only to age out and lose interest when they graduate from the program at age 15. In years past, many of the graduates have volunteered to assist during KidsView activities.”
Callicoat says the new challenge has been retaining KidsView participants’ interest

in collecting as they become teenagers and young adults. Therefore, new education
and retention opportunities were explored, and the new program was created for
young adult collectors.
Young collectors are encouraged to attend sessions from 10 a.m. to noon on
Thursday, July 7 and 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, July 8, where they will develop new
friendships through peer-to-peer discussion groups and hands-on activities.
Collectors are encouraged to bring their computers for use during the sessions. A
field trip will also be taken to the Pottery Place Street Sale, so participants should
bring some spending money. Young collectors who participate in this first year of the
program will become a charter member of the RWCS Young Collectors Club and
receive a special stoneware crock to commemorate the beginning of this adventure.
Watch for more details about the schedule of events on the RWCS website and the
RWCS/Kids View Facebook pages. If you’re interested in attending or volunteering
during the new program, or have a question, please contact Wendy Callicoat at
[email protected].
The Red Wing Collectors Society was founded in 1977 in Red Wing, Minn. and is
devoted to educating people about all American pottery. There are more than 4,000
members worldwide. The Red Wing Potteries had diverse pottery lines that included
stoneware, dinnerware and art pottery. Annual membership costs only $25. For more
information or to become a member, call the RWCS business office at 800-977-7927,
