Pull For Nepal Fundraiser

During the month of March, Tenafly Middle School strived to raise lots of money to
donate to the children of Nepal. With so many people in this school, this goal
seemed small and meek. The staff had no doubt that we would reach our objective.
There was a competition between Physical Education and Family Life classes to see
who would raise the most money. The class that raised the most money went on a field trip to
Bowler City, Thursday, March 24th, for half of a school day.
At the beginning of the Pull For Nepal Fundraiser, all the students were given a notice and
an envelope to bring home and inform their parents about this event. To donate, they put money in
the envelopes and gave it to their Physical Education and Family Life teachers. They could also
donate online and print out the receipt. When the event was over, all of the money was totaled and
there was a winner.
Why did we donate money for Nepal? This is because Nepal was hit by two deadly
earthquakes. The first took place on April 25, 2015 and measured 7.8 on Richter scale. Many
people were killed, hurt, and left homeless. A second earthquake took place twelve days later on
May 12th and this one measured 7.3 on the Richter scale. More people were killed, additionally hurt
and many more families lost their homes.
The organization “Save The Children” has worked in Nepal since 1976 and once again was
determined to help the people of Nepal through monetary donations. They hope to raise at least
$10,000 for the affected citizens of Nepal. This money is for hospitals, food, shelter, and many more
needed resources. The Music and PE department at TMS organized the fundraiser here for the
families and in particular the children of Nepal. The fundraiser was for a very worthy cause, but was
also fun for the students to participate in.
Who was the winner of the competition? Mr. Calabrese’s Period 8/9 raised $678 and won the
competition! Mr. Wein’s 8/9 class came in second place. Yes, all students participated in “Tug of
War”, but more important TMS did their share to help the people of Nepal!

2016 Sixth Grade Winter Concert

The Sixth grade Winter Concert students did a wonderful job performing! The
musical ensembles performed in the following order: Tenafly Middle School
Philharmonic Orchestra, Sixth grade Band and Beginning Band, Sixth grade Chorus,
and Sixth grade Orchestra.
The pieces played by the Tenafly Philharmonic Orchestra were “Sleigh Ride, In
a Persian Market”, “Intermezzo-Scene”, and “Finale from the Farewell
Symphony,” (No.45). The Sixth grade Band and Beginning Band played Symphony
No.94 “The Surprise Symphony” (2nd movement), “Chant and Cannon”, and “Blue
Note Rock”. The Sixth grade Band performed “Dr. Rockenstein”, “Phrygian Phantasy”, and
“Imagine” featuring the 6th grade Chorus. The Sixth grade Chorus sang “Music! Music!”, “One
Small Voice”, “Promised Land”, and “Under the Sea”. The sixth grade Orchestra ended the show
with the following performances, Finale from “Orpheus in the Underworld”, “Lion City”,
“Brandenburg Concerto” No.5, 1st movement, Star Wars theme song, and the “1812 Overture”.
The philharmonic orchestra consisted of violins, cellos, clarinet, trumpet, French horn, bass,
trombone, piccolo, flute, viola, and percussion. The Sixth grade band was made up of flutes,
clarinets, alto saxophones, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone,
baritone, percussion, and an oboe. The Sixth grade chorus had two parts, part one and part two.
The Sixth grade orchestra consisted of violins, violas, cellos, and a bass.
Congratulations to everybody who performed! You all did a great job. The ensembles
performed were very professional, and the songs were played beautifully. Special thanks to Jacob
Vougiatzis, who drew the cover design and to Mrs. Ziegler, who created the program. Tenafly
Middle School is so lucky to have such wonderful musicians and creative people!

A Persuasive Essay on an Important Topic

“That's so gay,” a phrase I hear and you probably hear, all the time. A phrase kids improperly use to mean
stupid, dumb, less than, not cool. A phrase meant to put someone down; to belittle someone. A phrase that just gets
tossed around like a rag doll gets abused. This phrase is very powerful. It can be very hurtful and incredibly
detrimental. Worst of all, it is the incorrect word. If you want to say stupid just say it. You don't have to say
homosexual. Being gay is not bad -- so why would you use the word as an insult? I do not understand.
The way kids loosely say “that’s so gay” is very hurtful. People are not just sounding ignorant and
uneducated, they are hurting others. Just because it is not “fag” or “dyke” (which many do understand to be wrong)
does not mean it is not inappropriate and harmful. These words affect kids in the worst possible ways. This type of
hurtful behavior is causing kids to miss school because they are being harassed in the place that they are supposed
to learn to be kind, caring and thankful and to feel safe.
Unfortunately, there are children who are shunning school because of the abusive environment that their
fellow students are creating. In fact, 75% of high school students have heard someone use “gay,” “dyke” or “homo” as
insulting or disparaging remark. According to Professor Barbara Gurr at the University of Connecticut who published
“Women's Gender, and Sexuality Studies,” kids in high school today have more access and hear more sexually
demeaning terms than ever before. Professor Gurr has found that 60% of kids who are bullied by being called sexual
terms have attempted to hurt or physically harm themselves. This can be directly correlated to the inappropriate and
insulting use of these words.
Kids’ calling other kids “gay” is often misusing the word. According to Dictionary.com, “gay means bright and
showy, and also merry and happy.” From that definition, historically, people started to use gay to describe someone
who is homosexual. Over time, gay unfortunately began to be used as an insult, which is really terrible. It is
disparaging or offensive to use the term gay to mean that someone is “weird,” “stupid,” or “worthless,” according to
Dictionary.com. Kids who use these terms as derogatory about other kids actually must feel insecure
themselves. Professor Gurr explains that these kids try and project their feelings toward other kids to bolster their
own self-esteem, or they may use these hurtful comments to deflect feelings about themselves. Either way the use of
these words as an insult is very powerful and harmful.
Kids should think about what and how to communicate with peers at school. Kids should be encouraged to
think before they open their mouths in a hurtful manner. In fact, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network
(GLSEN) see these slurs more and more with younger kids. GLSEN is trying to educate younger kids about hurtful
slurs. GLSEN advises in their education literatures that if you hear a hurtful sexual slur, correct that person while they
are saying it. For example, if a kid hears “that’s so gay,” GLSEN is teaching kids to say “don’t say something is gay
when you mean that something is dumb or stupid.” These sexual slurs can instigate physical harassment. Nearly
20% of kids who were called sexual slurs also reported to being physically assaulted. The kids that are being called
sexual slurs are twice as likely not to go to college. Sexual slurs are increasingly interfering with education at all
levels. Another example of decreasing education levels due to sexual slurs is that the average grade point average of
kids who experienced such harassment had a half a grade lower than the national average.
You create a chain when you say “that’s so gay.” One person says it, and then another person says it, and
then it becomes acceptable for everyone to say it. It’s like how I am with my best friends. We have the same
vocabulary that we adopt because we are so close. If one person just stops saying “that’s so gay,” then the people
who don't hear you say it as an insult will stop saying it. The chain breaks.
Let’s stand up for what we believe. Let’s stop using “that’s so gay” as an insult. Let’s make sure we all do our
part to break the chain!
The Accomplishments of Geraldine Ferraro

Geraldine Anne Ferraro was a great woman, but many of us do not know much about her. Before we
get started on her great accomplishments, here are the basic facts about her. Geraldine Ferraro was born
on August 26, 1935. Her father died when she was 8 years old. Her mother lost all her money and they
moved to the South Bronx. Although they were really poor, Geraldine stayed in school and kept up her studies. Her
uncle once said, “She’s pretty. She’s a girl. She’ll get married”. But Geraldine refused to stop learning to focus on
such things. After tons of work, Geraldine was accepted into Marymount Manhattan College on a scholarship. She
was the first woman in her family to get a degree. In 1947, she worked at the Queens County District Attorney's
Office. She was in charge of the bureau that dealt with sex crime, child abuse, and domestic violence. Geraldine
worked very hard and in 1978, she was elected to the United States House of Representatives! She was nominated to
become Walter Mondale’s running mate in the next Presidential election and the first woman to run for this office. Ms.
Ferraro also became the only Italian American major party national nominee! Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro
did not win the National election, but to this day, she is a very important woman in our country’s history. She paved
the way for many other women in politics.

Allegiance Trip
Problems with Holding the Olympics in Brazil

On Wednesday February 3, 2016 the Tenafly Middle
School sixth graders went to Broadway! After reading
the book Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac in language
arts, and learning about the attack on Pearl Harbor, the
sixth grade Language Arts and Literacy teachers
decided to take the entire sixth grade to watch the
Broadway show Allegiance. This musical was produced
by Lynne Shankel and Joel Moss. The musical is about
the Japanese Americans experiences in a relocation
camp.
When the sixth grade started period 6/7, they were
called down to the main entrance of the school by
assigned bus numbers. Once inside the buses, the sixth
grade drove through the Lincoln Tunnel all the way to
Manhattan where the theater was located. Once there,
they regrouped with their chaperones and waited for
someone from the theater to tell them to come inside.
What caught most people's eyes was the big sign above
the entrance that said “The show Trump doesn’t want
you to see.” And most students would agree with that
statement after they saw the show.
Inside the theater, the students were directed to
their correct seats where they patiently waited for the
show to begin. When the lights turned off all of the
theater became silent instantly.
During the intermission which lasted 15 minutes
just about every student went to the lower level theater
to use the bathroom or to buy food (candy) or drinks.
They were then instructed by Mr. Fabbo to go back
upstairs into the theater for the second part of the show
After the show, all of the sixth grade made their
way into the middle aisle to talk to the cast. Some of the
questions asked were “What’s it like to be an actor on
Broadway?” “Is this a real story?” and many other
inquiries about the show. Next the cast asked us some
questions. The one question we all remembered being
asked was “Who was your favorite character?” Many of
us responded that “I liked the old dude.” But then we
were asked “Why did you like the old dude?” We then
answered “Because he’s legit.” That response made
many of us giggle!
But while most of us would rather forget the ride
back, we remember it in too much detail. None of the
buses had air conditioning. But that’s okay, you would
think, right? Well, it would have been okay if the heaters
weren’t on! And it didn't help that no one would stop
talking. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that
we were happy it was winter when we came off the
buses.
But overall, this was one of the best field trips
that most of us have ever been on. Thank you to Mrs.
Meehan for coordinating such a wonderful trip!
The Summer Olympics are scheduled
to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from
August 5th to August 21st, 2016. But there is
concern about the games. Currently, the main issue with
the Olympics in Brazil is the Zika Virus, which is a disease
that is spread through mosquito bites and is spreading
quickly. Pesticides have been ineffective and the disease
could effect 3 to 4 million people over a 12 month period.
One of the ways to prevent Zika from spreading in Brazil is
to get rid of the mosquito-infected water. This is not an easy
endeavor and there has been talk about cancelling the
summer Olympics there. Naturally, this is not making the
people in Brazil happy as they have spent much time and
money preparing for the games.
The mosquito’s scientific name is the Aedes
aegypti. It also carries dengue and yellow fever. The insect
was first discovered in Africa in the 1940’s but is now
spreading quickly in Latin America.
For most people, catching the Zika virus is not a big
deal. Symptoms include fever, red eyes, joint pains and
rash. However, Zika is very dangerous to pregnant women
as it can cause in birth defects like microcephaly in babies.
Unfortunately, there is no known cure for the Zika Virus, but
so far the Summer Olympics are still scheduled there.
Olympics organizers plan to have an excessive
number of security agents at the 2016 Brazilian Games.
“Because terrorism was always treated as a priority, our
infrastructure is very strong. We have been coordinating
with delegations. We are ready," Rio state security chief
Jose Mariano Beltrame told CNN in an interview. But
nothing was mentioned about the Zika virus and its
potential to get many people sick. Brazil is a multicultural
state. It is one of the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India,
China) and is also the world’s fifth most populous nation.
Brazil is a very hot and humid place, and the
annual precipitation is about 1,200 mm. Rio de Janeiro is a
coastal city located on the western shore of Guanabara
Bay. Look for the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5 to 21, 2016.
Robots Aren’t So Perfect After All

Robots may appear to be geniuses that conduct all
their actions flawlessly all the time. However, one major
advantage humans have over robots is that robots don’t
have an accurate sense of touch. A doctor at Stanford
University discovered this while performing a practice
operation on a dummy’s ear using high-tech robotic
equipment. The robots frequently dropped tools, pushed the
wrong buttons, and made mistakes that could have resulted
in the death of the patient if the operation was real.
Although robots these days can be programmed to do
monotonous work for seemingly endless periods of time or
memorize an impossibly huge amount of information, they
can barely open a door or twirl a pencil. If we want to make
robots more useful to humanity in the future, one of the first
major steps we would have to make would be improving
their motor skills.

Andrew Wiles’ Journey of Solving Fermat’s
Last Theorem

For almost 300 years, one famous equation has
been unsolved… Fermat’s last theorem!
Fermat’s Last Theorem states that there are no
solutions to a +b =c when n is 3 or above.
This is a famous equation made by Pierre de
Fermat, a famous mathematician in the 1700’s. Fermat’s
equation came from Pythagoras, who made the
Pythagorean theorem (a +b =c ). Fermat changed the
number 2 to 3, and all of a sudden, there seemed to be no
solution. You can try for yourself. Fermat, with all his pride,
claimed to have solved the proof and that seemed like the
end of it. Except for one thing- Fermat had never written
down the proof. All that was left of his work on the problem
were some scribbles on the margin of his paper!
For the next 300 years, many brilliant minds and
smart mathematicians worked on solving this infamous
equation. Many failed, until 1995, when a mathematician,
named Andrew Wiles figured it out. He wrote his proof on
3 chalkboards after having worked on it for 30 years.
This is the story of Andrew Wiles’ adventure.
Andrew Wiles’ interest in Fermat’s Last Theorem started in
1963, when Andrew was only 10 years old. He went to the
local library and read a book called The Last Problem by
William Bell. The book was all about Fermat’s Last
Theorem. Andrew Wiles anticipated a final page in the
book where the confusing equation would be solved, but
once he read the last page, he learned there was no
solution yet. He became determined to solve this famous
equation and immediately started to look for anything that
would help him. Inundated by the fact that many other
brilliant minds had failed, Andrew worked on this problem,
never letting go and determined to solve it.
In 1986, Andrew Wiles continued to work on the
problem in secret, releasing previous work in small
sections, sharing everything he figured out only with his
wife. In 1993, Andrew presented his proof at the Newton
Institute, but found out then that there was an error in his
proof. After working on the problem for another 2 years
with his former student Richard Taylor, Andrew presented
a smaller, second proof that ultimately completed his proof
and finally put to rest the case of Fermat’s last theorem.
Andrew Wiles was awarded many honors,
including: The Fermat Prize, The Schock Prize, The Wolf
Prize, among others. With Fermat’s Last Theorem solved,
Andrew Wiles was very satisfied with reaching one of his
life goals.

SpaceX Landing

Usually, rockets are thrown out after they detach
from their space shuttle. To recycle them marks a
big step toward making space travel cheaper. On
November 24, 2015, SpaceX, an American
aerospace manufacturer and space transport services
company, launched from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Air
Force Station one of its Falcon 9 reusable rockets. The
primary mission was to put 11 small satellites into low orbit
for Orbcomm's, a new satellite network. The satellites were
all successfully placed. In addition, the landing of the rocket
back on Earth went well. After three failed attempts at
landing a rocket, it was a big success for Space X.

The Hydrogen Bomb of North Korea

Recently, North Korea announced
that they had cracked the code of the
hydrogen bomb and they had invented one.
Also known as the thermonuclear bomb,
the hydrogen bomb has been the headline
in newspapers since the announcement
about the hydrogen bomb. North Korea has
tested the hydrogen bomb and claims that the “H-Bomb”
works. If this is true and they continue to launch the bomb,
the whole world could be thrown into chaos.
To understand why this is such a big deal to the
world, it’s important to know how the hydrogen bomb
works. An atomic bomb is when an atom splits into much
smaller atom “parts” which makes a whole reaction and it
explodes. Do you know how much impact an atomic bomb
creates? In 1945, the U.S. dropped 2 atomic bombs on
Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. In total, 200,000 people
were killed in the bombing of the 2 cities. With a hydrogen
bomb, which is tantamount to over 100 atomic bombs put
together, and actually JOINS atoms together, this creates
a massive explosion that can affect several countries.
Now that you know how the bomb actually works,
it can be related to the drama of North Korea’s
announcement. If the bomb is actually dropped on a
country, it will affect many other countries as well. The
radiation would spread all over different countries, so this
bomb is a really big deal. If the hydrogen bomb were
dropped on New York City, the whole city would be
demolished and regions nearby would also be affected.
Instead of killing 200,000 people like the atomic bomb did
in 1945, the hydrogen bomb might kill a million people. No
one wants that to happen any time soon. Also, if it were
dropped, that would almost certainly lead to the start of our
next World War. The war would affect more people and
countries.
But on the bright side, this bomb is just a threat. A
Korean television report states that they won’t give up this
nuclear research unless the U.S. stays in a position of
aggression. It doesn’t mean that it’s going to actually
happen. This hydrogen bomb will be a suicidal attack if
North Korea actually drops it. If the President realizes this,
he would just be bluffing about the bomb. Imagine that
North Korea drops this bomb on the United States. The
U.S. is likely to bomb back and keep in mind that America
has a LOT of different bombs to use.
The reactions to this announcement is strong.
South Korea claims that this is a challenge against world
peace. China, which is North Korea’s ally, says that they
strongly oppose this. That’s unusual because generally
your ally sides with you and not against you. Japanese
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe states that it is a threat to
Japan’s safety he wouldn’t tolerate it. Let’s hope that we
will never have to face this situation in reality.

Hana’s Suitcase: A Book Review

Hana’s Suitcase
is a biography of a girl
named Hana Brady who
perished
during
the
Holocaust.
It tells the
story of a professor at the
Holocaust
Research
Center in Tokyo, Japan, named Fumiko Ishioka, who was
devoted
to
educating
students
about
the
Holocaust. Professor Ishioka contacted the Aushwitz
Museum and asked them for items such as a suitcase that
would help her students understand the unimaginable
reality of children who happily lived with their families until
they were deported to concentration camp by the Socialist
Nazi Party. Children such as Hana were told that they
could only bring with them one suitcase. The book Hana’s
Suitcase actually begins with the professor asking Aushwitz
to send personal items that belonged to children who were
in the camp. From this request, she received Hana’s
suitcase to show her students and the story of Hana
unfolds.
Hana was a young girl of eight when her life began
to change drastically. She lived in Czechoslovakia with her
parents and older brother. Her parents got arrested and
were taken away by the Nazis, never to be returned to their
home and children. Hana and her brother George then went
to live with their Christian aunt and uncle until Hana and
George got deported themselves to Auschwitz. George
ended up working in the camp and surviving, while sadly,
Hana got sent to the gas chambers shortly after her arrival.
As one reads this book, he or she learns much
about Hana and how she felt as a Jewish girl still living in
her community. Hana felt enraged when she and George
were turned away when they wanted to go to the movies
and saw a sign that read “No Jews Allowed” on the wall of
the movie theater. At the same time, Hana’s best friend,
Maria, was forbidden to communicate with Hana. Hana also
refused to go outside after the Nazis gave out yellow stars
and forced Jewish people to wear them. She hated it so
very much!
Professor Ishioka was determined to unravel
Hana’s entire tragic life story, but the question remains
whether she is able to do so in this book. To find out an
answer to this question, you need to read Hana’s Suitcase
and decide for yourself. Hana’s story in this book makes her
live forever. This book is highly recommended for those
who want a new perspective of the Holocaust.

Top 10 Cartoons of the 1990s

The 90’s gave us more than just the internet. It also gave us awesome cartoons! Hi, I’m Josh, and I’ll be counting
down my list for the top 10 cartoons of the ‘90s. For this list, I’ll only be including cartoons that aired during the 90s. They
willl be ranked by their popularity and their overall entertainment.
10. X-men: The Animated Series- Kicking off the list is the animated series that boosted the popularity of the X
-Men. Before it became a movie franchise, the X-men series centered on the adventures of Wolverine, Rogue,
Cyclops, Gambit, Storm, and Professor X. This show not only had great storylines and cool animation, it also
had a really rocking theme song that embodied all the awesomeness of this series.
9. Darkwing Duck- This cartoon was part of the Disney Afternoon line-up back when Disney channel wasn’t
overrun with sitcoms. A spin-off of Ducktales, this show centered on the adventures of a crime-fighting yet
clumsy hero Darkwing Duck who, with the help of his sidekick, Launchpad, fights evil in his hometown. Just
like many other Disney cartoons back in the day, this one was a classic.
8. Gargoyles- Gargoyles is another animated show on the Disney Afternoon lineup which was about monsters
in New York that came alive during nighttime and protected the city from evil. This show stood out from many
cartoons in the 90’s because of its dark and serious tone and complex story arcs. The show’s popularity
ended up earning it a cult following, as well as a video game and a comic series continuing the show’s
storyline.
7. The Ren and Stimpy Show- Like Gargoyles, this show stood out from most cartoons of the 90’s, but in a
different way. This show was about a maniacal, short-tempered, Chihuahua named Ren, and a stupid, yet funloving cat named Stimpy. This show was best known for its gross-out humor and adult themes. It got in trouble
every now and then with Nick’s standards and practices, but it did end up jump-starting the adult-animated
genre.
6. Beavis and Butthead- Like Ren and Stimpy, this show caused a lot of controversy. Beavis and Butthead
were 2 morons who would always cause trouble in their neighborhood. Many people hated this show due to its
poor animation and its bad influence amongst young viewers. It also caused trouble in the real world, and
critics during that time have criticized the show for prompting delinquent behavior. But despite the trouble it
caused, this show still kept people laughing. So these two might’ have done one thing right in the end.
5. South Park- TV history was changed forever after 1997. South Park, like Beavis and Butthead, had crude
language, cruder animation, and kept making fun of society and its problems. From turning Barbra Streisand
into a mecha-dinosaur to an elephant and a pig breeding together, this show kept fans laughing back then,
and will continue to do so for years to come.
4. Rugrats- Nickelodeon had really great cartoons back in the 90’s, and one of these cartoons was Rugrats. A
show about babies and their adventures in or out of the house kept many fans entertained, and their
popularity resulted in merchandise, toys, a movie trilogy, and even a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. The
adventures of Tommy, Chuckie, Phil and Lil, Angelica, Dil, Kimi, and Suzie entertained kids back then, and will
remain in the hearts of ‘90s kids who remember.
3. Animaniacs- Steven Spielberg not only made a movie about dinosaurs, but also an animated series about
the Warner Siblings, Yakko, Wakko, and Dot, and their crazy shenanigans around the studio lot. Everything
about this show was great, the characters, the references, the adult innuendos, etc. It even educated kids as
much as it entertained them. With memorable characters and episodes, this show has been a staple in
television animation history.
2. The Simpsons- Even though this show started in the late ‘80s, the Simpsons had reached its peak of fame
during the 90’s. Almost every famous Simpsons episode ever came from this decade. Whether it was about
Bart becoming a daredevil, a clown’s sidekick becoming a villain, a who-done-it 2-parter reminiscent of the
“Who shot J.R.” episode, a series of Halloween specials or even a monorail train that goes off the rails, this
show was definitely the best one TV had to offer. If only current Simpsons episodes could be like this.
1. Batman: The Animated Series- Talk about dark! This show is one of the greatest adaptations of the dark
knight’s adventures ever! It’s been praised for its dark tone, artistic quality, and of course, it’s overall
epicness. Taking influence on Tim Burton’s dark knight films, this show centers around Batman (and his
occasional sidekick, Robin) stopping crime in Gotham City as well as overcoming his own struggles. It even
inspired a new art visual called dark deco. So, out of all the cartoons in the ‘90s, this has got to be the
greatest one ever.
The following shows did not make this list, but should receive honorable mentions: Rocko’s Modern Life,
Spiderman (1994 series), Tiny Toon Adventures, Dexter’s Laboratory, and Recess. And that’s my list. Have a great day!

The Attacks against France

The most horrible Paris attack happened on
Friday, November 13, 2015. Friday the 13th is known
to be an unlucky day. Did ISIS plan this attack purposely to be
on this day? At least 129 people died during this attack, leaving
families and friends very upset, depressed, and…there are just
no words for such a tragic event.
This attack is only one of the most recent attacks. On
the 26th of June 2015, in Lyon, Southern France there was a
grotesque attack. An Islamist driver suspected to be linked to
ISIS decapitated a man and rammed a company van into gas
cylinders at the Air Products Gas Factory in an attempt to blow
up the building.
Numerous attacks have happened in Europe, especially
France. Just a few months later, the innocent people of Syria
escaped to Europe for protection against the Syrian army.
However, Europe did not accept the people of Syria, fearing that
a spy from the army was hidden among these people. But when
a baby died, Europe gave in and let the people of Syria in.
However, it is most likely that a few spies pretended to be
innocent and snuck into Europe.
President Barack Obama promised to work harder with
allies like France to prevent any more terrorist attacks from
happening. "Today, [French President] Francois Hollande and I
agreed that our nations must do even more together," Obama
said at a joint press conference at the White House with
Hollande. "We'll do even more to prevent attacks at home."
As many know, America, France, and about 65 other
nations are against ISIS. Presidents Obama and Hollande met
before the press conference in the Oval Office, 11 days after the
Paris terrorist attacks that greatly affected families and friends.
France’s goal for the future is to work hard to restore the
country. France tripled the military for its safety and the
president of France, Francois Hollande said that France is
committed to ‘destroying’ the so-called Islamic State group.
President Hollande says that the enemy in Syria is
Daech, (an islamic state) meaning that they will never trust Syria
ever again.
In December 2015, Donald Trump attended a rally to
discuss the attacks and death of 14 people in San Bernardino,
California. In a speech, Trump said a Muslim ban from the US
should be in effect "until our country's representatives can figure
out what is going on with ISIS." This caused some people to be
outraged, but many actually supported his idea. The other
Republican candidates said this was unjustified and not the best
way to control ISIS.
Why is ISIS so strong? ISIS actually has many
weapons. First of all, it has oil. Oil is their major source of
income. They sell oil to companies illegally to make money and
then they can buy weapons. They also use the internet to recruit
people to their side.
The free world though has strength and weapons too.
There are little machines that fly around called ‘drones’. A drone
can provide picture and can also be used as a weapon, If
someone destroys a drone and it gets destroyed, it is not
considered a big deal. There is no pilot and no human beings
inside so nobody gets injured or killed. And more of them can be
made when needed.. Spreading disinformation. Is another tool
that can be used to fight ISIS and confuse one’s enemies.
Disinformation is spreading false information. Additionally,
other countries can be convinced not to sell oil to ISIS.
One other effective tool that can be used is spying.! Spies
can visit enemy territory and learn helpful information.
They are disguised and pass as average people in that
society. President Roosevelt did this years ago, when he
sent Japanese soldiers into Japan to spy on the Japanese
and their government.
These are just some of the tools available to
countries like France as they combat ISIS and any other
enemies that attacks its citizens. Hopefully, they will make
progress in this endeavor.

Interesting World Records, Part 2

Chandra Bahadur Dangi, is the shortest
man on earth. He died at age 75 from
pneumonia. He measured 1 foot 9.5 inches tall
and weighed 31 pounds when weighed in the
Lyndon B. Johnson Tropical Medical Center in
Pago. This native of Nepal was proved to be the world’s
shortest man ever in 2012, replacing 1 foot 10.5 inch Gul
Mohammed, who died in 1997. In 2014, Dangi traveled to
London, where he met the tallest man on earth, Sultan
Kosen from Turkey. “It makes me extremely proud to
represent Nepal all around the world,” Dangi said.
Next is the oldest person on earth! Believe it or
not, the oldest person is a French woman, named Jeanne
Calment. She lived for 122 years and 164 days. Sadly,
she died August 4, 1997 in Arles, France from natural
causes. But she smoked cigarettes daily, so it’s amazing
she lived as long as she did. She was born on February
21, 1875. Calment married her second cousin Fernand
Nicolas Calment at the age of 21. Fernand was a wealthy
store owner who died at the age of 73 in 1942 because of
food poisoning. They had one child, Yvonne Marie Nicole
Calment.
Here is one more fascinating record!
It is the most amazing fact ever! Introducing,
the biggest, the largest, the greatest SNAKE
IN THE WORLD! The largest snake in the
world is the Green Anaconda at 25 feet and 2 inches. It
was found when three fishermen went out in the waters of
Brazil. It looks almost like a crocodile! But don’t be
deceived, this is real.

I’ve been waking up very late recently and I never have time to eat breakfast. By the time it’s third period I am dying
for food. It’s like my stomach is talking to me! I have tried to set my alarm clock but, my little five year old brother always
turns it off. Please help me! I am so very hungry each day. It’s like a war to get food, and I guess I am losing this battle.

Dear Hunger Games,
This is a simple problem and there are many ways to
solve this. One way is to close your door so that your brother
does not turn off the alarm. Another is talk to your mom or dad
and come up with a solution together. A simple way is to just
eat your breakfast in the car. If you don’t have time to make a
breakfast, make some before you go to bed and just grab it in
the morning. Remember, breakfast is the most important meal
of your day so don’t make your breakfast a junk food festival.
Eat things like yogurt, fruits, cereal (not the junky ones), and
eggs. Enjoy a yummy breakfast!

That’s super easy. You can tell a teacher that someone has been flipping
your lock, and you can ask for a new one. If they do find out the new locker
code tell someone and they will get to the bottom of it. If you don’t want to
get involved, you can simply switch your gym lock with your locker lock.
You can also buy a new lock and switch it out every day to give the lock
flipper a little challenge, but remember you don’t want this to turn into a lock
flipping war. If you do find out the person who flips your lock, report it to the
office. Do not try to flip that person's lock back for revenge, because it will
escalate from there and you will both get in trouble.

Top 10 Cartoon Bullies

They like to call you names, take your lunch money, and find a way to make your life miserable. Hi, I’m Josh, and
today I’ll be counting down my list for the Top 10 Cartoon Bullies. For this list, I’ll be talking about the nastiest, meanest,
and jerkiest bullies in the world of animation. In real life, however, bullies are as mean in the real world as they are in
cartoons. So if you see a bully being mean to kids, then try to help by telling those bullies to knock it off. Now onto the
list:
10. Roger M. Klotz (Doug) - Kicking off our list is Roger, Doug’s archenemy and resident bully of Bluffington,
Virginia who was based on creator, Jim Jinkins’ bully. Roger is the school bully who always finds a way to make
fun of Doug and his loyal dog, Porkchop. Always allied by his posse, as well as his equally mean pet, Stinky,
Roger is definitely a bully you do not want to hang out with. He’s just as nasty as his skin color.
9. Diamond Tiara (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic)- Friendship wasn’t really the case with this little brat.
She, along with her friend, Silver Spoon, frequently made fun of ponies that don’t have any cutie marks;
especially Apple Bloom and her friends. Spoiled, mean, and pretty much annoying, you’d think that she’d have
no good bone whatsoever. However, in one episode, it’s revealed that the reason she acts the way she does is
because of her over-controlling mom. Later in that episode, she stands up against her mom and becomes nicer
to her fellow classmates.
8. Pacifica Northwest (Gravity Falls)- Just like Diamond Tiara, Pacifica Elise Northwest is as spoiled as they
come. The most popular girl in Gravity Falls, Pacifica Northwest spent most of her time making fun of Mabel
Pines and her misfit friends Candy and Gretchen. She seemed like another one dimensional, mean girl
stereotype, until she started getting development in Season 2. It was revealed that just like Diamond Tiara, she
also had an over-controlling parent who made her into something she wasn’t. It was thanks to Dipper that now
she’s become a bit nicer. If these last 2 bullies taught viewers anything, it’s that some bullies can have feelings
too. The same goes for the next guy on the list.
7. Buford Van Stomn (Phineas and Ferb)- Buford Van Stomn may act mean and brute on the outside, but on
the inside, he has a soft side; somewhere. Buford is the neighborhood bully who does what any bully would do;
is mean and nasty towards nerds. But despite his mean nature, he’s actually one of Phineas and Ferb’s friends
who will always lend a helping hand to them. Aside from bullying nerds, he’s also fluent in French, has fun with
his goldfish, Biff, and hangs out with or makes fun of his close friend or nerd, Baljeet.
6. Helga G. Pataki (Hey Arnold)- While she does wear a pink bow, Helga G. Pataki is not your regular girl. She
spends most of her time playing baseball with the other kids, and threatening others who make fun of her with
her fists; namely “Betsy” and the “Five Avengers”. Although she does act coldly, she actually has a soft spot for
poetry and a certain football-headed kid. Still, she’s a rough tomboy not to be messed with.
5. Princess Morbucks (The PowerPuff Girls) - Man, there are a lot of spoiled brats on this list. And Princess is
no exception. She’s not only a spoiled brat who has everything, but she’s also one of the PowerPuff Girls’
enemies. She originally wanted to be a PowerPuff girl herself, but after being rejected by them, she has been
trying to defeat them by using her most powerful asset: COLD, HARD CASH.
4. Lucy Van Pelt (Peanuts)- This girl is as crabby as little girls come. Lucy Van Pelt has been clobbering and
yelling at her friends since the 1950s and will probably keep at it for years to come. Not only does she bicker at
her little brothers and threaten others with violence. She also keeps shattering Charlie Brown’s self-esteem by
pulling the same football gag on him over and over again. Her bark’s as bad as her bite!
3. Angelica Pickles (Rugrats) - While she does have “Angel” in her name, Angelica is definitely a devil. When
she’s with adults, she acts as nice and perky as any little toddler. But when she’s with her cousin and his
friends, she’s just a manipulative, spoiled bully. Even though deep down she’s fond of her baby friends, Angelica
spends most of her time yelling and ordering them around. Whenever she isn’t ruining the Rugrats’ day, she’s
usually stealing cookies and singing badly with her doll. Whether you’re a baby or an adult, she will drive you
nuts.
2. Eric Cartman (South Park)- This fat kid is as crude as the show. Eric Theodore Cartman is the biggest jerk in
South Park. He is constantly cursing at his fellow classmates and hitting people to “respect his authority,”
Cartman is just a spoiled little kid. Not only is he a bully, but he can also be something of a psychopath as
evidenced in one episode where he killed his enemy’s parents and fed them back to him in the form of chili.
While he is easy to manipulate, you should refrain from making fun of him if you know what’s good for you.
1. Nelson Muntz (The Simpsons)- He’s the bully to end all bullies. Nelson is like no other school bully. He
beats nerds up, he steals lunch money, and he taunts kids with his notable catchphrase (“Ha-Ha!”). He can also
be seen making kids like Milhouse Van Houten and Martin Prince suffer from his wrath. Along with all the other
bullies in Springfield Elementary, Nelson is brutal, mean, and menacing - just like other bullies in real life. Do the
world a favor, and speak up against bullying.

Minions Movie
The Gaming Toy Craze

Minions are short, obedient, and yellow
characters. They crave for an evil boss and search for one
until they find one. When their search is complete, they
live forever. Minions serve their bosses, doing their
master’s biddings as henchmen, although sometimes
minions will betray their bosses for power. Minions don’t
have magical powers, but they use weapons and
technology. Sometimes minions are bad at technology,
causing explosions on evil guys. Minions like to have fun,
like playing jokes on people and eating bananas. They are
also good guys at times because they are funny. They are
usually good at their job and have happy spirits, which
helps them try to keep succeeding.
The Minions is a movie prequel to Despicable Me
and Despicable Me 2. The Minions are the secondary
characters in Despicable Me. They work for Gru, their
boss. They sometimes make funny mistakes which makes
them popular with Gru and with the audience. The
Despicable Me movies made the minions so popular that
they got to make their own movie.
What makes Minions a good movie? People
wanted a movie where the Minions could appear as main
characters. The audience wanted to know where the
minions came from and when the minions found Gru. The
Minions movie answers these questions for the audience.
The audience finds the movie as funny as they want. The
best parts are when the minions act funny.
Many people didn’t like the movie, but I did,
because the minions are so funny. They crushed Egyptian
people with a pyramid, melted a vampire, and one minion,
Bob, became King of England, making people do funny
stuff. My favorite part was when Gru froze Scarlet Overkill
because she was evil and deserved to freeze.
Minions has a good plot, but the movie is more
about comedy rather than having a good plot. Its purpose
is to make someone who is sad cheer up, laugh and
brighten their day. Without a master, the Minions have no
purpose. They become aimless and depressed. If this
situation continues any longer, the Minions would perish.
The movie is about minions wanting a boss, but failing
each time they find one. It focuses on three Minions,
Kevin, Bob, and Stuart, doing silly stuff such as Stuart
making 3 men sing in their underwear. The minions travel
around the world, having various adventures.
You can buy the movie on DVD or Blu-Ray, or go
on YouTube for clips and trailers. It is currently out of the
theaters. The movie is rated PG and is 1 hour and 31
minutes long. Enjoy!
Skylanders was the first of its kind. It brought toys to
life. The toys control your character by putting them on the
game portal. The base of the toy at the bottom has all the data
for the figure. It’s a unique video game.
Now, lots of companies are using Activision’s great
idea and using it for their own characters. Disney, Nintendo,
and Lego are using this “toys to life” idea to make their own
product line. Some are more innovative than others, while
others are completely forgotten.
Skylanders was the only game of its time in 2011.
Putting toys on bases, buying characters, and using toys to
unlock new content made Activision millions of dollars richer.
Because of the uniqueness of the idea, lots of companies
used it and made it their own versions. Activision had to step
up their game, literally and made many great ideas. Giants
were big Skylanders that could do amazing feats because of
their strength. Swappers came with a top and bottom. You
could customize your top and bottom. There were 256
combinations in total! In Trap Team, you could trap a villain
and play with him/her with elemental traps. Trap Masters were
strong against villains and could unlock elemental gates.
Super Chargers, also from Skylanders, could customize
vehicles. They also made minis, tiny versions of Skylanders
that had no value in gameplay besides the fact that they
looked cute and were inexpensive.
Disney Infinity “piggybacked” off Activision’s idea of
gaming toys and did well. They use their own characters and
have level packs similar to Skylanders Adventure packs. They
have a sandbox mode called toy box where you could build
and explore. When Disney bought Marvel and Star-Wars, they
used those characters and made new games.
It wasn’t that surprising when Lego announced that it
was making a new game with Warner Brothers. What was
surprising was that they were joining the “toys to life” train.
Lego Dimensions is very popular when it first came out.
Unfortunately, Lego’s game didn’t turn out too well. It was
basically the same as the other Lego games just using figures
and buildable structures. Other themes created were The
Simpsons, Ghostbusters, and others.
Amiibo, Nintendo’s second series of gaming toys, was
the saving grace for the Wii U. They made Pokémon Rumble
U figures, but made many mistakes with them, like poor
advertising and Wii U unpopularity. Although Amiibo only
worked on a few games for the first year and were not that
important in games, rare Amiibo have been selling for over
$100 on eBay! For most games, you use them and just get an
in-game bonus. Super Smash Bros and Mario Party are the
only games where you can currently save data on Amiibo.
Nintendo puts in a great effort to make their Amiibo look great,
but they don’t care much about figure support, using clear
pieces to hold their characters in cool positions.
Gaming toys are the future of video games. What will
happen next? What new million-dollar idea will strike us
without any notice? I don’t know yet, but I bet it will be cool.

Spring Snacks

It is getting warmer, but it’s still a bit chilly at night. These are some easy snacks you can make at home.
1. Indoor S'more's- Get some marshmallows, chocolate, and a bunch of cookies. Place the chocolate on the
bottom, and spread it out so that it is even. Then, place the marshmallows on top and spread those out evenly.
Pop it in the oven for 9-11 minutes at about 350 degrees. Then dip your cookies inside, scoop it up, and enjoy!
2. Baked apples– Take a whole apple and cut it into slices. Spread them out on a pan. Use 2.5
tablespoons of water and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch then stir them together. Spread them over the apples. Now
season with 1.5 tablespoon of sugar and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon. Bake in the oven for 10 - 15 minutes at 350
degrees.
3. Nutella Bananas– You will need a banana and Nutella (and any other toppings you might want). It’s pretty
simple. Unpeel a banana and spread Nutella all over it. An easy way to do this is to spread Nutella on a sheet
and roll your banana on it. Try to get as much as possible for a sweeter treat. Then use whatever other
toppings you chose and pop them on top of the Nutella. Refrigerate for 5-10 minutes, cut them up, and start
eating!
