June 14th is the United States Flag Day,
which commemorates the adoption of the
flag by the Second Continental Congress in
1777. George Morris is been credited of
suggesting Flag Day in 1861 but it didn’t become a tradition until 1916, when President
Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that
officially established June 14th. However,
Flag Day is not a official
federal holiday—only
Pennsylvania celebrates
Flag Day as a state holiday.
The longest running Flag
Day parade is held annually in Quincy, Mass. which
began in 1952. And in Philadelphia, Flag Day is appropriately celebrated at
Betsy Ross’ house.

CD message for June 2012 WOW, me really does fly when you are off riding and pu ng miles on the bike. Where did May go? We had our vaca on to So Cal and Arizona which we really enjoyed and tried out our new piggybacker trailer and camped. Our a er chapter ride in May was to the Black Diamond Mines in An och which we have heard about but never seen before. Our last Wednesday of the month dinners are working out well too. Trying new and locally owned places, not franchises. We have a ride or event of some kind every weekend planned in June and our upcoming garage sale on July 7th. This is an ac ve chapter and we really enjoy ge ng together with everyone. On Wed May 23rd we had a potluck at our house to revisit the chapter plans for the next several months which was VERY WELL a ended, thank you to everyone who a ended the potluck! June 2-3 Don and Beth are leading a ride with an overnight with Minden, NV as the stop. Also on June 2nd is the Fremont Police Dept 1st annual motorcycle officer compe on with Mark Kratz as one of the judges. June 9 is the CA2J rally star ng at Contra Costa Powersports, please join us. June 16 is our monthly chapter gathering with a ride around Lake Berryessa and we hear ice cream is a stop on this trip. June 23rd is the CA2N rally in Sonora which we plan to a end. June 30 is a ride to Avenue of the Giants. WOW, you have a menu of items to choose to have fun with Goldwing friends, that is like another family to many of us. Watch for emails, Facebook pos ng and Meet-up for details on these. We have had several new people join our group in the last few months and we hope that you will take me to introduce yourselves and get to know them. Those of us who have been with 2Q for along me some mes forget to slow down and welcome the new faces and learn why they have decided to visit us and then return to enjoy our GW family. TIME TO RIDE!! Building Dreams, Friendships & Memories on the Goldwing Highway Steve & Jacque Foster—Chapter Director Team 2 District Director’s Message
DD Review, Here it is, May 15, 2012. There are just 9 days un l the Region F Conven on in St. George, UT, 50 days un l Wing Ding, and a mere 107 days un l our California State District Conven on. All three of these events provide you plenty of opportunity to enhance your Riding and Leadership skills, so please be sure to take advantage of everything you can. GWRRA provides a tremendous variety of educa onal sessions, all at li le or no expense to you. How’s that for a warm up? Wait, there’s more. . . The Cows of CA-1M just completed their “Milk Run” Rally, and from all accounts, they did a great job. But I wouldn’t expect anything less from Steve & Sandy and the herd. CA-2W is hos ng their “Big Valley Casino Rally” this coming weekend, and if its anything like their previous Rally’s, it will be a blast. June brings us 3 more Chapter Rally’s (CA-1D - 2nd, CA-2J - 9th, and CA-2N - 23rd), so if you are looking for something to do between the Region Conven on and Wing Ding, well, you are sure to be well fed and entertained. With only 107 days un l the District Conven on, this is when things start ge ng real busy for us at the District level. For those that are responsible for hos ng Rally’s or Conven ons, you know what I mean. For everyone else, please know that we appreciate all the help we can get. Until we see you again, “Hang on – we’re
going for a ride”.

Thanks to Lynda Smith for being the Historian this month! ∗
Discussed the dinner meet-ups held on the last Wed of the month. The last one was arranged by Linda Androws at Melo’s in Livermore. We agreed to con nue this tradi on, as everyone likes it. It was suggested that we look at the new restaurant Clemenne’s in San Ramon (the old Marie Callendar locaon). They serve Cajun cuisine I believe. ∗
There will be a PLP Facilitators seminar that will teach how to become a PLP facilitator. Bruce Howland has more info on the details if anyone is interested. ∗
Reminder that July 7th is the garage sale at the Androws. Set up between 7-7:30 and BBQ to follow. ∗

The Fremont Police Dept will have its first annual compe on at Ohlone College (just for the police officers.) Mark Kratz will be judging on Saturday June 2nd. Might be fun to observe, and to say Hi to Mark! As Educator, Bruce reminded us to T-CLOCK our bikes. May is motorcycle awareness month. There is a You-Tube video of last month’s PLP in Livermore where a bike went down because the gentlemen neglected to keep his focus on the turn. Also, Jacque displayed the bumper s cker from the GWRRA office about motorcycle awareness. Reminder on Wed the 23rd is a Planning Mee ng at the Foster’s. The a er-chapter mee ng ride was to Black Diamond Mines. Note that there is a historical marker at the site. Aug 17th is the deadline for the marker game. The Mammoth rally is coming up, and we’re all in support of our couple of the year - Don & Beth There was some general discussion about the chapter buying some tools for motorcycle maintenance. Then they would be available to those who do their own maintenance. Topic is s ll open for discussion. Steve and Jacque were the 50/50 pot winners of $52.00. So proud of Don’s Navy service, and most indicated that they would a end his re rement celebraon! 5 Rider Education
HOW CAN A CO‐RIDER HELP ? Let’s face it. It is a lot of work & hassle maintaining a motorcycle and thinking about all the items we need to address before moun ng-up. Co‐riders can help. Many co‐riders help us with our “T‐Clock” inspec ons--- T – Tires & Wheels C – Controls L – Lights O – Oil C – Chassis K – Kickstand Addi onally – Co‐riders help us with our Ride Prepara on ♦ Have a short mee ng with the rider before the ride, do you both feel good? Communicate. ♦ Reserva ons needed, packing, an cipated stops, maps? ♦ Ride Prep: Water, drinks, snacks, medicine, clothing needed for weather condi ons? ♦ Have on the bike @ all mes: first aid kit, bike cover, flares, re gauge, face shields, re repair kit, bandannas, and plenty of water. ♦ Co-riders are a second pair of eyes—They help us navigate the highways and byways. ♦ Co-riders are our partners—They help us control the machine- leaning into corners and turning heads when naviga ng close turns. ♦ Together a rider and co-rider are a team. STEVE & JACQUE BIKE VACATION SPRING 2012 We took off for Indio to experience the Stagecoach Music Fes val for several days featuring Brad Paisley, Mar na McBride, Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert, Sara Evans, Luke Bryant to name a few. To keep costs down, we decided to camp in the car camping secon. Well for two, camping gear does not fit well on the bike so we decided to get a trailer. The piggybacker seemed like the answer. Just about everyone in the chapter heard about the stories and the wiring problems. With lots of help, we did have an opera ng trailer for our trip. The one thing we did NOT count on was that they do NOT allow motorcycles of any kind in the camping area. So we had to figure out something else. A friend/client of my boss lives in Rancho Mirage so we were able to park the bike/trailer there and rent a car for the concert weekend. We did do well considering that we have not been camping in 25 years. 75% of those in our camping area were under the age of 40 and there was MAJOR drinking most of the day. We don’t remember ever being able to consume that much beer/liquor. They had some sort of games going at all hours too. Thank goodness we brought northern California weather with us. Temps never got over 92 and nights in the tent were not bad either. SOOOOO many ta oos both on guys and gals and the bikinis were standard clothing for the gals. We really did enjoy our me but portable shower trucks need improving. 7 The CD’s Ride to the SW
STEVE & JACQUE BIKE VACATION SPRING 2012 (CONT.) A er returning the car rental and retrieving the bike/trailer, we headed off for Peoria, AZ to visit Bob and Gail Johnson. They are the first people we met when joining CA2Q many years ago. We stayed overnight with them and went thru lots of old 2Q pictures to get some names and info. They are very ac ve in their GW chapter in Phoenix. We went to the GWRRA home office in Phoenix for a tour also. They have a lot of nice people there who put out the Wing World magazine. Many were busy preparing to visit St George, Utah for the Region F rally. Instead of driving down the Interstate 10 to Tucson, we took the Tom Mix highway AZ#79 which passes thru Florence, AZ. It was a leisurely drive with a stop at the memorial for Tom Mix. Here is a link to the story about Tom Mix h p://
www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2425 This brought us right into Oro Valley where our son lives. We spent several days there. He just bought a new house so we got to see it being finished, went shopping for ceiling fans with him, got a personal tour of the new FBI office in Tucson, went to a University of AZ baseball game, which they went on to win. Mike’s office also volunteers periodically at one of the food banks to make food bags so we par cipated in that and met some of the people he works with which was a rewarding experience. We also visited Old Town Tucson which is where many of the wests big movie sets filmed movies and TV series: High Chaparral, McClintock, Rio Lobo to name a few. We had planned to take a different route home but a er 2 weeks on the road were anxious to be home a day early so took highway 10 back to Palm Springs area then HWY 5 all the way home. Really no problems with the trailer. A great trip to visit family and friends and traveling about 2,000 miles in 2 wks. The Goldwing Highway is always filled with an adventure of some kind. See you all out there. Steve & Jacque 8 Calendar

12 Recipe of the Month
Thai Pineapple Shrimp Rice
From Linda Androws kitchen
Adapted from Hot, Sour Salty Sweet by Jeffrey Alford
Although there are a lot of ingredients, the cooking time is short. What does take some time (maybe
20-30 minutes) is gathering the ingredients and having them chopped, premeasured and ready at
hand when the pan is hot. Once you begin cooking, the whole dish comes together rather quickly.
Ingredients:
3 cups brown Jasmine Rice (soak for about 45 minutes in cold water before cooking) If you don’t
like brown rice, you can use your favorite white rice.
3 cups fresh pineapple in 1 inch cubes
1 large Maui onion cut in 1 inch chunks
1 red bell pepper cut in 1 inch chunks
1 orange bell pepper cut in 1 inch chunks
1 cup sliced scallions, chop into ¼ in slices separating the white and green parts into 2 piles.
1/4 cup fresh ginger finely minced
4 cloves garlic finely minced
4 stalks of celery cut in 1 inch pieces
2 cups chopped Napa cabbage

1/4 cup Tamari Sauce (Tamari is gluten free!) or soy sauce
s a rty hit!
1/4 cup Fish Sauce
1 cup whole cashews
1 can sliced water chestnuts
1 cup coarsely chopped fresh cilantro
1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
The juice of 1 lime
1-2 tablespoons garlic pepper paste – If you don’t have garlic pepper paste, you may use 4 tablespoon red pepper flakes. My favorite comes from a Chinese restaurant in Berkeley. My
son-in-law gets it for me, any of the pepper pastes or garlic pepper pastes found grocery are
fine to use.
1 pound tail off shrimp - I like small shrimp for this dish but you may choose any size you prefer.
You can also use cooked or raw shrimp. Either works out equally well. The raw will give the
dish a slightly more seafood flavor.
13 Recipe of the Month (cont.)
Cook brown rice until just tender in 6 cups water
and 1 tsp salt. I use a rice steamer but you can
use you favorite method to cook the rice. Be
careful not to overcook the rice or the dish will be
mushy. After the rice is cooked, fluff it with a fork
and set aside while you start the vegetables.
Preparing the vegetables: Start out with your
biggest sauté pan or a wok. Heat about 4 tablespoons of oil sauté on medium temperature.
When the pan is good and hot add the Maui Onion, the white part of the scallions, bell peppers,
celery, cabbage and jalapenos, ginger, water
chestnuts, and garlic until the onion is slightly
translucent. Cook for 3-5 minutes tops. The celery and peppers should be al dente. At this point,
add the pineapple cubes and toss.
don’t overcook.) This is important! If the rice
starts to stick, the heat is too high. This step
should take only 1-2 minutes at the most. Again,
be gentle with the rice and don’t overwork the
mixture.
At this stage you should remove the pan from the
heat source and cover the pan with a lid or foil. It
will hold easily for ½ hour or more. To present
the dish, serve in a large shallow bowl and sprinkle with the remaining ¼ cup chopped cilantro.
Finishing sauce: This is a very flavorful and
spicy sauce to be used on individual servings
and to personal taste. Hint: when you are chopping all scallions, garlic, ginger and cilantro for
the rice, just prepare a little extra of all for the
sauce and set aside.
1/3 cup Tamari
