BFD Big Orchestral Marching Band
Welcome and thank you for purchasing BFD Big Orchestral Marching Band! The installation
process and the hit types (articulations) used in this expansion pack differ from previous
products in the BFD range. Reading through this manual will ensure that you get the most out
of the sounds.

Installation
• You must install BFD v1.5.48 (or later) or BFD2 in order to use BFD Big Orchestral Marching
Band. Obtain the latest version from your FXpansion.com user account before you proceed.
• The data on the supplied DVDs is compressed (using a zero-loss algorithm), to facilitate
the delivery of the highest possible level of detail. You must run the installers in order to
successfully install the sounds. You cannot simply copy the data to your hard drive.
• Mac users: during the installation process, you may be asked for your Admin password. You
must have Administrator rights in order to install this software.
• Each DVD contains an installer specific to the contents of that DVD.
Please follow these steps for each of the 2 DVDs !

Insert the DVD and run the BFD B.O.M.B. installer.
• Windows:
If the installer does not auto-run, explore the DVD contents in My
Computer and double-click BFD BOMB Win Setup.exe to run it.
• Mac:
Open the DVD contents and double-click BFD BOMB Mac Setup.

Follow the on-screen instructions until the ‘Installation Path’ stage appears.

BFD 1.5 users:
elect your BFD folder: this is the
S
folder which contains the Data
folder in which BFD’s sample data
resides. Make sure you select the
BFD folder, and not BFD/Data
or any other folder. If you do not
select the correct folder, the new
sounds will not be available in BFD.
You should also use this method
if you intend to use the included
sounds in both BFD 1.5 and BFD2.
BFD2 users:
pecify any folder on a suitable hard disk, or your existing BFD2 folder. The installer
S
will warn you that the folder is not a BFD folder, but it is safe to continue anyway.
Click Next when you’re ready to proceed.
4.
Choose the detail level at which to
install the DVD’s kit-pieces.
This determines the maximum amount
of velocity layers (and the resulting
hard disk space usage) that are
installed for each kit-piece on the DVD.
Small: Medium: Large: max. 20 velocity layers
max. 40 velocity layers
all velocity layers
Click Next to proceed.

Choose which kit-pieces to install – deselect a kitpiece, by clicking its checkbox, in order to remove
it from the installation.
If you want to install all the kit-pieces, you don’t need to do anything. If you like, you
can delete unwanted kit-piece folders manually after installation if you want to free
up hard drive space. Note that the provided kit definitions require all kit-pieces to
be installed!
The info display on the right shows information about each kit-piece and the hit
types (articulations) it contains. Use the scroll-bar to scroll through the full list.
All kit-pieces on the DVD whose check-boxes remain checked will be installed with
the same detail level during the installer routine.
The installer program calculates disk space requirements dynamically, so please
be patient when selecting and deselecting kit-pieces.
Click Next when you’re ready to proceed.
6.
Enter your BFD Big Orchestral Marching Band serial number (located on the inside
front cover of the digipak containing the DVDs). You will only need to enter your
serial for the first DVD you install.
Click Next to commence installation of the DVD’s contents.
Installation of each DVD can take quite a while, as a large amount of data needs to
be de-compressed and installed.
When the DVD has finished installing, eject it, insert DVD2 and repeat steps 1 to 5.
When you have finished installing DVD2, you are almost ready to use your sounds!
Additional steps for use in BFD 1.5
1. Run the BFD 1.5 standalone application (you must update to 1.5.48 first!).
2. Enter your BFD Big Orchestral Marching Band serial number when prompted.
Additional steps for use in BFD2
1. Insert the Big Orchestral Marching Band DVD1 again.
2. Run BOMB for BFD2 Win.exe (Windows) or BOMB for BFD2 MacOSX (Mac) – this
installs the kit definitions and Grooves for BFD2. Follow the on-screen instructions to
install these files.
3. Run the BFD2 standalone application.
4. • If you installed to an existing data path, click the ‘Scan data paths for new files’ in
the BFD2 Data preferences.
• If you installed to a folder not currently specified as a data path in the BFD2 Data
preferences, add the folder now as a data path. BFD2 automatically scans the
added data path for new files.
5. The FXpansion License Manager should now launch automatically.
6. Authorize Big Orchestral Marching Band in the License Manager in the same way you
authorized BFD2 and any other expansion packs you own. Please consult the BFD2
Quickstart Guide for a full guide to using the License Manager to authorize a product.

You MUST be registered to receive support. The BFD2 authorization process registers
your serial automatically, but BFD 1.5 users will need to register their serial manually.
Registering also means we have a record of your serial if you lose it.
Lost serials will NOT be replaced!

Recording notes
The BFD Big Orchestral Marching Band collection was produced by John Emrich and
recorded at Omega Studios, Rockville, Maryland. In December of 2006, John retired from
the US Navy Band, Washington, DC as a Chief Musician. In his 20 year career as a premier
military musician, John has spent a great deal of time performing on drums of all shapes
and sizes for visiting dignitaries and heads of state, including performances with marching
instruments.

Using BFD Big Orchestral Marching Band
Usage in BFD 1.5
• You must run BFD version 1.5.48 in order to use BFD Big Orchestral Marching Band.
• Most of the kit-pieces have one or two hit types and are classified as percussion. You are not
limited to using the percussion slot – you can also use the extra kick, snare, tom and cymbal
slots. Make sure you know how to use the ‘Type’ drop-down selector in the kit-piece selector
panels to enable you to access all available kit-pieces from any slot.
• Chromatic sounds such as chimes and timpani need more kit-piece slots than might be
available when already using some kit-pieces. In such cases, you may need to launch a
second instance of BFD in your host so that you can load more kit-pieces. Note that this can
be too resource-intensive for less powerful systems.
• The high levels of detail in the sounds can use a lot of RAM, especially when using them in
addition to drumkit sounds. When using smaller amounts of RAM, you should either install
BFD BOMB with Small or Medium detail levels, or adjust ‘Max layers’, ‘16-bit mode’ and other
settings described in the BFD FAQ for reducing RAM usage.
Usage in BFD2
• In order to use the BFD Big Orchestral Marching Band sounds in BFD2, the product must
first be authorized using the FXpansion License Manager. Its data must exist within one of
the data paths set up in the BFD2 preferences, and this data must be scanned and added to
the BFD2 database.
• You can load any kit-piece into any slot, with all articulations loaded even if the destination
slot is designed for kit-pieces with fewer articulations. You may need to create new key
mappings to any additional articulations loaded into the slot, however.
• Make sure you know how to use the ‘Type’ drop-down selector in the Kit-piece chooser
panels to enable you to access all available kit-pieces from any slot.
• If you create large 32-piece kits, please bear in mind that you may start using too much RAM
– in such cases you should use detail-reduction settings such as ‘16 bit mode’ and reduce
the ‘Max velocity layers’ and Detail settings for each kit-piece type.
More usage tips
• The articulations (Hit types) within the sounds in many cases differ from those in previous
BFD libraries, to reflect the nature of the instruments and the way in which they are played.
Read the Kit-piece info displays and the listing in this manual for more specific information on
each kit-piece.
• There is no bleed in any of the included sounds.
• Some of the included sounds, such as the Lion’s Roar, are atmospheric ‘effect’ sounds,
intended to be used incidentally rather than rhythmically. It may not be a good idea to
load these into slots referenced by Grooves, although by all means do experiment! With
adjustment of parameters such as the damping settings, you can use such sounds in many
different ways.
Grooves
BFD BOMB is supplied with a number of Grooves, in both BFD 1.5 and BFD2 formats.
If you’re using BFD2 and you have enabled ‘Show BFD1 Bundles’ in the BFD2 Grooves
preferences, you’ll see the BFD1 versions as well as the BFD2-formatted Grooves and
Palettes.

License Owner may only install and use BFD on multiple computers strictly under the following conditions: where multiple computers comprise part of a single
