Principal’s Report
Dear parents and guardians
I start this newsletter congratulating our
Dux, Chirag Udhani and our Proximate Accessit,
Thomas Chiang. You are very high achievers,
and an inspiration to us all. Congratulations
to all prizewinners at our various prizegiving
ceremonies, Senior Prizegiving, Sports Awards
and Arts Awards Nights. So many students have
reached amazing heights in their various fields and
Takapuna Grammar School is very proud to have
assisted them in whatever way, great or small.
I wish to give special
acknowledgement to the
Takapuna
Grammar
School PTA. We are so
privileged to have such an
active and supportive PTA
at Takapuna Grammar
School. The PTA hosted the now annual Golf Day
on Thursday, 28th October. This was a very well
organised and strongly supported event. I thank
the PTA, the sponsors and various supporters
of the Golf Day. Thank you for the tremendous
support you offer the staff and students of
Takapuna Grammar School.
With the end of the year well upon us, we wish
all the seniors well in their examinations. They are
actively engaged in these at the time of writing
and they go with our best wishes and support.
In closing, I wish you all a very Merry
Christmas and a relaxing holiday period. We look
forward to returning to 2011 for what will be very
exciting year.
It is hard to believe we are at the end of the
year already, reflecting on what I believe to be a
great year at Takapuna Grammar School.
Regards

Celebrating Success
This year has seen the community elect a new Board of Trustees of which I am proud
to be Chairperson. We have great strength, drive and ambition to work with you all to continue to
move the school to greater things.
At the end of the school year, we can look back with pride on many achievements, both personal and
as a school. Our new Foundation Trust has trustees and is determined to help secure our financial
future; we are embarking upon an exciting partnership with our Korean community, where together
we will build and share a cultural centre with high speed video conferencing facilities for use by
students in the day and the community in the evening. We have also seen the first steps towards
better conditions for our students with special needs, utilising the old library, and are waiting the
funding promised to complete the refurbishment this year.
2010 is also a year to remember for the performing arts. For the first time for the school, Bruce de
Grut, David Stent, Jane Horder, Juliet Cryns, the cast and orchestra, and the many staff, parents
and student helpers put together a dazzling musical of Fiddler on the Roof and staged it at the
Bruce Mason Centre. This was an inspired and courageous decision to move from the school hall
to this professional venue – and it worked! Add the successes of the many school orchestral groups,
singing and dance groups and our Business School Young Enterprise Scheme national finalists, and
we have a school community that strives to achieve excellence in whatever we turn our hand to.
Our Community
This sense of belonging to the community of Takapuna Grammar is something we as a Board want
to foster in the coming years. We have all shared in and celebrated the success of our students:
through staff and parents supporting team and individual sports resulting in not just the international
success of Jacko Gill, but success of all our sports teams and individuals representing TGS across
the country and abroad. I would also like to recognise the hard work of our International team led
by Senior Deputy Principal Terry Holding which has provided our school with a richness of friends,
culture and learning of the wider global community – our reputation abroad is as a welcoming,
friendly and high achieving school and community, a view endorsed by our international students.
We can be rightly proud of this. My thanks to you, the parents, Parent Teachers Association, care
givers and whanau who have encouraged, supported, and been there for your children. You are the
foundation of our school community – you have a natural pride in seeing your sons or daughters go
through Takapuna Grammar and become well-rounded, confident young people, equipped to deal
with the next steps of their lives and positively contribute to society.
Our Future
Board of Trustees
A D AU G U S TA - TA K A P U N A G R A M M A R S C H O O L
Next year, the Board of Trustees’ annual goals remain focussed on improving student achievement
across the school, making this a school that students and teachers want to come to and achieve their
best. We will strengthen our strategic ties with Belmont Intermediate and the other schools on the
peninsula. We also want to become more engaged with our community, working in partnership to
achieve success. There is much to do. To those who are leaving us, good luck for the future and
remember that you remain part of the TGS community for life! For those who are returning next year,
look forward to exciting times ahead in 2011. I wish you all a great summer holiday, you deserve it!

Great Golfing
The fifth annual Takapuna Grammar School Golf Day was
held on 28 October. The sun shone and teams of helpers swung
into action to make it a pleasant and profitable day. Following
an afternoon on the greens, the golfers were welcomed into the
Waitemata Clubhouse by one of the school’s string quartets.
Dinner, prize giving and an auction rounded off the day.
Approximately $12,000 was raised for the school.
Debbie Stewart, event organiser commented, “Without the
many willing hands the PTA could not have put on this first
rate event. I’d like to thank everyone who took time from their
busy schedule to help us. Our principal sponsor, Bayley’s were
also very generous with their time and with the expertise of
their staff.” Indeed, Sue Stanaway from Bayley’s couldn’t
resist bidding and winning one of the auction prizes.
First place was fiercely contested and only decided on count
back. The winning team was captained by Andrew Kerslake,
a staunch TGS supporter. Runners up were Beca, captained
by a new Board of Trustees member, Jon Williams, and
third place was awarded to a team entered by the Patriot.
Other place getters were “The Misfits” (4), “2 kool 4 skool”
Takapuna Grammar School Staff (5) and Gardyne Holt (6).
The PTA is not resting on its laurels though. Planning is
already underway for next year’s golf day. If you would like
to lend a hand please call Helen Whitehead on 021 748 331.
Check out the Takapuna Grammar School PTA facebook page for more
photos of the 2010 golf day.
“We look forward to this event every year” says Phil Gillard
from Knowledge Net. “It’s one of the best run tournaments
around. And to top it off we are supporting an outstanding
school.” Phil came away with the wine connoisseur’s hamper,
beautifully presented by My Goodness Gift Baskets.
Food, Fun & Friendships
Passionate parents are sought for food, fun and
friendships. This merry band of mums and dads put
together both fundraising events and parents socials.
4
Next year the PTA will organise the annual golf day,
produce a Takapuna Grammar Cookbook and stage
a parent’s dance and a Winter Ball. Desiree Mason
encourages more parents to sign up. “If we get more
people involved we can also put on other events which
have been on the back burner for some time now. We
have so many great ideas but just need people who
want to contribute to the school. It’s not a talk fest.
This is for do-ers”
Nicky Pridham, the retiring treasurer says “As
a new comer to the area joining the PTA has
been a tremendous way to meet other parents.
I have made firm friends and had a lot of fun.”
If you would like to join the committee or just help on specific projects,
call Desiree Mason on 446 6043 or Karen Yarnton 445 6079.
