FES applied to be in the network and committed to a three-year plan to improve their environment under the Whole Child Tenets, which state that students must be healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged to succeed in school. ASCD is providing grants, resources, and supports to help ensure that FES successfully follows the tenets and improve learning and teaching across the board while promoting a healthy environment. As part of the Whole Child Network of Page 3 Schools, Finegayan Elementary School must complete assessments, partner with community organizations, and provide professional development for their faculty and staff. By following this plan, the school can make great strides toward successfully implementing school improvement. "This is truly a journey of learning," said Evangeline Iglesias, Principal of Finegayan Elementary School. "Our school community is excited to part of the network and look forward to making a difference in the lives of students and the school community." As a result of this support and training, FES will be able to build a culture of success and develop opportunities to expose students to college and career options and guidance, create opportunities for teachers and other staff to use research-based strategies that address identified problems and are aligned to school goals, and establish practices that will create a positive school culture and climate. Internship Experience Karen Grande—My overall internship experience at GDOE internship helped me develop necessary skills and improve my knowledge base, and it has assured me that I chose the right field of study. I feel I will be more confident in myself and my abilities.Prior to starting, I was extremely nervous because I had no idea of what to expect or if I would be able to meet my supervisor’s expectations. But after my first day of work, I felt very relieved to learn that my supervisor was receptive to questions regarding my duties and responsibilities and very helpful in assisting me to become familiar with the department’s new Financial Management Information System - Munis, which manages their core functions more efficiently. I realized that during my internship I was enjoying accounting and has reaffirmed my decision to become an accountant. Good thing since graduation is just around the corner in May. Page 9 One of the best things about my internship at DOE was having the opportunity to meet new people. The staff made the workplace environment such a friendly place to be in. The feeling of being welcomed the moment I stepped foot in the business office made me look forward to working the next day and applying for a job. I believe that what surrounds an intern in the workplace is part of what helps the intern decide whether he or she wants to be with that organization in the long run or not. With that said and experiencing how new employees are trained, I can definitely see myself being employed with DOE in the near future.
