SEPTEMBER
2012
IT’S A GREAT YEAR TO BE YOUNG AND TO BE A FOOTHILLER!
No matter how you feel about
testing, there’s one thing on
which everyone can agree: it’s
good when the numbers move
in the right direction. That’s
the case with the test results
just received by GHS, which
show significant gains in almost
every area, outpacing those of
the rest of the district. In the
California Standards Tests
(CSTs), GHS had the second
highest percentage increase
among the district’s 11 regular
high
schools,

a particularly strong showing
in English Language Arts and
Science. GHS also raised its
percentage of graduates
meeting the University of
California A-G requirement
and increased its Advanced
Placement test pass rate in
most subjects, registering the
biggest increases in Calculus,
Psychology, Art, and
Environmental Science. With
three new AP courses slated to
be offered this year, that’s
great news.

Homecoming
Top Five Reasons
To Come To
Homecoming 2012!
1. Food, Glorious Food
Eat dinner on the quad at our Food
Truck Festival, featuring some of
San Diego’s favorite gourmet food
trucks. Win a cake at the Yellow
Brick Road cake walk. Other
goodies for sale too!
2. Friends, Fabulous Friends.
Connect with old and new friends.
Join the Classes of 1961, 1965, and
1966 for the dedication of three
new benches they purchased. Visit
the GHS Museum from 4-7 p.m.
and remember your glory days.
3. Fun, Fantastic Fun
Check out the Old Gym, wrapped
from head-to-toe. Enjoy the
carnival for kids of all ages. Watch
the half-time skit and see who will
be crowned Homecoming Queen.
4. Football, Foothiller Football
Go team! Get on your Foothiller
cap, and cheer GHS to victory!
5. Mashin, Marvelous Mashin
The GHS Football Stadium will
officially be christened Jack Mashin
Stadium with the placement of a
permanent plaque honoring the
legendary Foothiller coach from
1923-1960. Nicknamed "The Fox
of the Foothills" because of his
coaching success and innovative
game plans, Coach Mashin was
inducted in the California Coaches
Hall of Fame in 1966.

D. The main Homecoming event is,
of course, the football game. In
1971, GHS not only beat Helix at
Homecoming, but went on to win the
San Diego County CIF championship.
To the right, GHS past principal
Walter Barnett receives the trophy
from Coach Pat Roberts. The 1971
Junior Varsity team also won first
place, with an undefeated season.
A. 1966 marked the first time
Grossmont celebrated an entire
week of Homecoming festivities.
B. Queen Gail Griffen presided
over the 1965 Homecoming
festivities with two Honorary
Princesses. The first Homecoming
Queen was named in 1947. Today,
the announcement of the Queen is
part of the halftime program; the
Homecoming King (a tradition that
started in 1974) is announced at the
dance following the game. C. In
1987, the halftime show included the
landing of a hot air balloon as part
of a “Wizard of Oz” theme,
repeated this year as “There’s No
Place like Grossmont.” The tradition
of Homecoming themes began in the
1960’s.
D.
Where Are They Now?
Bill Davis, Class of 1948, Hall of Honor Member
Bill Davis loves Grossmont High School. It is a love first instilled in him in 1944-48
during his four years as a student and athlete at Grossmont High School, then in
1966-1970 by his four years as a Vice Principal, and finalized by more than ten years
as Principal from 1976-1988.
Upon his departure as GHS Principal, Bill said despite the changing problems the
school faces, “the things Grossmont stands for are built on a foundation and record
of excellence.” After leaving Grossmont, Bill became a GUHS District Director working
to develop programs to identify and encourage high-risk students to graduate.
But his love of all things Grossmont didn’t end with his retirement. Bill has become
Grossmont’s oral historian, reminding us of the wonders of our past. In this role, Bill
has continued to be an advocate for the values and traditions that have distinguished
Grossmont High School. Outside of education, Bill has continued to serve others. In 1988 after 37 years in the military, Bill retired as a Colonel:
he had served 4 years in the Naval Reserve, 2 years of Active Duty in the Air Force, and 31 years as a member of the Air
Reserves. In addition, Bill has been active in East County community service organizations: he is a member and Past
Distinguished President of the La Mesa Kiwanis, as well as being a member of the Elks Lodge of El Cajon, the El Cajon
Masonic Lodge #575, the SDSU Aztec Club, and a Life Loyal Sigma Chi member.
Opportunities to Make A difference this year ...
Foothiller Fans, Friends, Fanatics,
and Founders
The GHS Educational Foundation has four different
levels of membership: Fans, Friends, Fanatics and
Founders. Each of these supports GHS and has
associated benefits; there is a category for every budget.
Please visit the Foundation website at
www.foothillerfoundation.com to check out the levels and
make your contribution today or mail a check to P.O. Box
1043, La Mesa, CA 91944.
Got Your E-Scrip?
eScrip is a fantastic resource for supporting GHS that
does not require a single additional penny. Simply
register your grocery loyalty (Vons Club Card, most likely)
and/or debit and credit cards, and participating
merchants will make contributions to the school -- your
discounts, points, and rewards remain intact and
unaffected. You can register online at www.escrip.com.
The GHS Group ID is 152356390. If you do not know
your Vons Club Card number, you can easily retrieve it by
calling 1-877-723-3929 and giving the phone number that
you typically use at check out. Out of the thousands of
GHS families less than 150 registered their Vons Club
Card last year? That is a fraction of the donations that
GHS could be earning if more people completed the easy
registration process. Based on estimates of the average
family’s monthly grocery bill, merely doubling that number
(300 families out of the more than 2,000 enrolled at GHS)
would yield annual contributions of $21,000! Please
register your card(s) today, or look for forms at Back-ToSchool night that will allow the Foundation to register your
Vons card for you!
Read All About It!
Invest a nickel to give GHS $10. Does it sound too
good to be true? It’s not, thanks to the U-T San Diego’s
“5cents/5days” program, benefitting local schools. If you
or someone you know has not been a UT subscriber within
the past 30 days, you can get five days of the paper
(Wednesday through Sunday) delivered to your home
FOR A YEAR, for five cents. Not five cents a week -- five
cents period. For every new subscriber that Grossmont
signs up, the school will earn $10. To pay your nickel and
sign up, see the form on our website at
www.foothillerfoundation.com, or bring a nickel to
Homecoming (September 21) or Back-To-School night
(September 19).

Grossmont Museum and Alumni News
This summer has been a busy one for Foothillers reliving their memories. Several reunions have already taken place this summer,
including the Classes of 1942, 1949, 1966, 1977, 1982, 1987, and 1992. In June, the Class of 1942 visited Grossmont and shared their memories
with current students; ASB members that gave them a tour of campus, including the Old Gym and the “Castle”, the only two buildings remaining
from the Grossmont they knew 70 years ago. In August, the Friday evening before their 30th reunion, the Class of 1982 visited the Museum to
recapture their Hiller history. Listed below are the upcoming reunions this fall in order of the date. These are opportunities for graduates to relive
their Foothiller memories and to build new memories with their classmates. For more information, visit our free GHS Alumni website at http://

Homecoming has been a tradition at Grossmont since 1921 and the graduation of its first class. In 1930, the yearbook states, at “its annual
“visiting day” at Grossmont…. many “old grads” … return to the familiar haunts and halls of their alma mater to live again, for a while, in
memories of the time when they, too, were students here.” This hasn’t changed in 92 years!
This year, from 4-7, the Museum will be open and will be the hub of several commemorative alumni/historical activities. Come and join
the fun and plan to stay for the game and enjoy the amazing halftime show!
Please email us with questions at [email protected] and explore our new Museum website, accessible under the About GHS tab on
the school’s home page at grossmont.guhsd.net.
