FESTIVAL
@ CANARY
WHARF
The sculptures, structures and installations on
display are the creations of some of the most
innovative artists and designers around today,
presenting work in a diversity of different forms
of light technology. Together the artists represent
four continents showcasing projects that are
interactive, performance or visual spectacles
to be admired from close up or afar.
Many pieces explore how we communicate in the
modern world. Julius Popp’s bit.fall taps into live
news feeds creating a digital typography waterfall
and Bitone’s Totem responds to the presence of
mobile phone signals around it. Other installations
such as Jen Lewin’s The Pool encourages viewers
to physically touch and engage with it and create
visual and audio reactions.
Best seen after 4pm, all the installations and
light effects come alive throughout the evening
until 9pm so join us and experience a wealth of
inventive and spectacular creativity illuminating
Canary Wharf.
Appealing to art lovers, lighting enthusiasts,
families and the young and old, there is something
for everyone as soon as dusk falls and all for free.
This exhibition complements the Winter
Lights installations. Using industrial
materials such as fluorescent tubing,
breeze blocks and bitumen, Nathaniel
creates large scale installations
examining the interplay of light and
structure in the built environment. His
uncompromisingly minimal architectural
forms have the raw beauty of shafts of
streetlight falling on wet pavements.
THE LUMINOUS CITY
NATHANIEL RACKOWE
1 LOBBY, ONE CANADA SQUARE
11 JANUARY – 12 FEBRUARY
The Luminous City is curated by the
House of the Nobleman, a Londonbased international private dealership
and curatorial art practice whose work
ranges from producing exhibitions and
events to art and design sourcing.

LIGHT SPHERE I
TOM WILKINSON
2 ADAMS PLAZA
Light Sphere I uses persistence of vision
to create the illusion of light, magically
sculpting a sphere in mid-air. Often using
the spherical form, Tom considers it to
be the purest form in the physical world,
the shape of all matter. The LEDs in this
installation are full colour spectrum RGB
and capable of producing very subtle
and pleasing colours. Light Sphere I,
his earlier work Let’s Bounce and more
recently Entanglement all explore the
void at quantum level, with reference to
the atom and its field of electrons.

LIQUID SPACE 6.1
DAAN ROOSEGAARDE
3 ADAMS PLAZA • 11-14 JANUARY
Like a living entity, Liquid Space 6.1
detects people approaching and rotates
in their direction. Stand beneath its
bulbous ’head’ and your bravery is
rewarded by coloured light and sound
emitted from the installation’s three
sides which shift in shape and size. This
interactive sculpture, inspired by the
fluid shape of water, is composed of a
careful balance of springs and plastic
tubes interwoven with LEDS, spotlights,
speakers and sensors.

WE COULD MEET
MARTIN RICHMAN
4 ADAMS PLAZA
Martin is interested in how art can improve the
quality of life in cities, humanising and helping
to give locations a sense of place. We Could
Meet’s formality echoes a long tradition in art and
produces an order where the informality of chance
events is also permitted. As the lights change
colour, the juxtapositions of our colour perception
change as well - red in a field of blue appears
different to the same red in an orange field.

A PARALLEL IMAGE
GEBHARD SENGMÜLLER
5 CROSSRAIL PLACE
LOWER LEVEL 3
A Parallel Image acts like an electronic
camera obscura that explores an
alternative means of electronically
transmitting moving images by sending
every single pixel through a separate line.
Gebhard Sengmüller’s installation, created
in collaboration with Franz Büchinger,
enables the viewer to physically witness
the image transmitted between the
camera and monitor using 2,500 cables.

MOON
IREGULAR (DANIEL IREGUI)
6 CROSSRAIL PLACE
LOWER LEVEL 3
Moon is an interactive sculpture inspired
by the enigmatic nature of lunar light.
Through a window a moon is visible
floating in the air. By touching the
space outside the window the viewer
can control the installation’s light
creating mysterious visual effects.

AURA (2014)
PHILIPS LIGHTING DESIGN
7 CROSSRAIL PLACE
Aura (2014) is an interactive experience
that allows people to connect with
light and sound in new ways. Arising
from a project by Paul Thursfield at
Philips Lighting and Simon Rycroft at
Goldsmiths College, its design explores
the role of light in everyday life and
continues Philips Lighting Design’s
experimentation with emerging
technologies in ways that affect people
at an emotional level. Additional sound
design for Aura (2014) is provided by
Thomas Voyce.

THE POOL
JEN LEWIN STUDIO
9 MONTGOMERY SQUARE
Giant concentric rings of touchsensitive circular pads create an
interactive environment like a huge
playground. Whirlpools of light,
colour and movement are created as
you run, jump, step or hop onto the
pads. Either alone or in groups, you
can create mesmerising patterns of
swirling and fading colours as you
shift weight on The Pool’s pads or
move from one pad to another.

MY LIGHT IS
YOUR LIGHT…
ALAA MINAWI
10 JUBILEE PARK
In today’s troubled world, my light is your light… was
created as an act of solidarity with Syrian refugees. The
silhouettes of a family of six hopelessly fleeing a conflict
zone have been created in lines of neon light. The radiating
glow of the sculptures acts as a tribute to all refugees who
yearn for their extraordinary stories to be heard. Suggesting
a glimmer of hope, it appears that the youngest figure in
this group has discovered something interesting.

GLOBOSCOPE
COLLECTIF COIN
11 JUBILEE PARK
11-14 JANUARY
Tailored to suit each new location, Globoscope is an
immersive installation composed of luminous spheres.
Through a programme of digital sequences, using sound
and light, the whole space becomes animated with each
interconnected sphere representing a point or pixel in this
digitised landscape. Mathematics, sound and light are all
brought into play to represent, transform and augment the
space offering spectators a surreal promenade.

FLAWLESS
GONZALO BASCUÑAN
& PERRINE VICHET
12 JUBILEE PARK
Echoing the natural process of
photosynthesis, this poetic installation
encourages the viewer to contemplate
how essential light is for human wellbeing as well as creating a place of
fantasy and imagination. Flawless is
a shimmering curtain of falling elm
leaves that glow with a green hue at
night having absorbed the energy of
sunlight through the chemical process
of photoluminescence. This installation
is particularly poignant given the
devastating effects of Dutch elm disease.

STEPHEN NEWBY
14 MIDDLE DOCK
Butterflies are symbols of change, creativity and joy
and their power is transformative. On the Wings of
Freedom is a radiant cloud of butterflies representing
metamorphosis and freedom and symbolising potential
change and cultural evolution. Viewers can interact with
the installation by using their mobile phones activating
the lighting effects in real-time.
ITALY, NOW BASED IN UK • AETHER-HEMERA.COM
Five illuminated circular pools float on the surface of
Middle Dock. Take a closer look and each pool appears
to be an endless vortex of light plunging down into the
depths of the water. Stephen’s Infinity Pools are based
on the Infinity Mirror principle and the effect produced is
surprising and mystifying.

BIT.FALL
JULIUS POPP
15 CHANCELLOR PASSAGE
7-9AM & 4-10PM DAILY
Live newsfeeds are the source for a
waterfall of words cascading into Middle
Dock. Using sophisticated technology a
series of valves let illuminated droplets
of water fall to form letters and words
that appear in mid-air. bit.fall is a
metaphor for the incessant flood of
information we experience each day,
creating a play between technology
and its relationship with the natural
elements. The end result is a beautiful
and spectacular visual experience.

TOTEM
BITONE COLLECTIVE
16 CABOT SQUARE
Totem responds to the presence of
mobile phone signals in the air around
it, active or passive. The stronger and
more numerous the signals the brighter
and more vivid the sculpture appears.
Exploring the hidden signals that
surround us and keep us in touch with
family, friends and work, Totem becomes
an interactive conversation about the
technology that underpins our societies.

FANTASTIC PLANET
AMANDA PARER
18 WESTFERRY GARDEN
An 18ft high illuminated inflatable figure
lands at Canary Wharf especially for this
year’s Winter Lights. This installation is
inspired by the cult science fiction film
Fantastic Planet [1973] that is set in the
distant future in a world populated by
gargantuan humanoids. The massive
white creature gives you the impression
that it has just landed and is quietly and
gently exploring our fantastic planet.
