Sponsorship Opportunities About the Canary Challenge The Canary Challenge is an annual bike ride and 5km walk/run in Palo Alto, California and a pioneer in fundraising in the Bay Area. Unlike many other organized charity bike rides, the Canary Challenge ensures that 100% of all funds raised are directed to the event beneficiary, the Canary Foundation research programs, and do not cover the cost of the event operations. Nearly 1,200 riders participated in the Canary Challenge in 2015 and raised more than $1.1 million for cancer early detection research at the Canary Center. The mission of the center is to foster research leading to the development of blood tests and molecular imaging approaches to identify and isolate early cancers. In 2016, Canary Challenge cyclists will ride with the goal of raising $1.75 million for Canary Foundation research programs. The Canary Foundation is the world’s first non-profit organization dedicated solely to the funding, discovery, and development of tests for early cancer detection. The Canary Foundation was founded in 2005 by Don Listwin, a successful high-technology executive who lost his mother to misdiagnosed ovarian cancer. Today, the Canary Research Teams continue to drive scientific progress through blood and imaging biomarker discovery, with the ultimate goal of translating these technologies into diagnostics tests for the early detection of cancer. “The Canary Challenge is a perfect bike riding experience with great support and wonderful people. It serves a very meaningful cause, and it stirs the passion of those participating. I’ve done the Canary Challenge for the past four years and plan to do it again. A rider can’t go wrong by participating. It’s a joyful event.” C.E. Floyd The Ride The Canary Challenge is a fully supported bike ride offering a 5 km walk/ride/run, 50 km, 50 mile, 75 km, and 100 mile rides – all with multiple food and water stops, mechanical and medical assistance, and plenty of commemorative gifts. The rides cater to all levels of cycling strength and time availability. The two longer routes cruise the foothills of the Peninsula, with the 75 km and 100 mile routes taking the riders up and over Skyline Boulevard, through Pescadero and San Gregorio, onto Highway 1 and up the coast. In 2013, a family friendly 5k walk/ride/run route was added to the event. In the 5th annual Canary Challenge, nearly 1,200 cyclists of varying skill level rode in the event. In 2016, we anticipate 1,500 cyclists to participate, each raising a minimum $400. The 5K Canary Cruiser The Canary Challenge 5k is a family friendly route, canvassing the village of the Canary Challenge. Bring your kids, your family, your running buddies, or your bike. However you want to complete the 5k is up to you! “I’m 73 years old and have had both hips replaced. 25 miles is the longest I’ve ever ridden before, so 50K was a possible stretch. I decided to do the ride as 3 close friends died from cancer in the past year. It was a totally exhilarating feeling when crossing the finish line in under 3 hours and having raised over $4500 and the memory of my three friends.” James Harris Events The Canary Challenge features many pre-ride events for riders to participate in. There are monthly training rides, hosted by local cycling club, Menlo Bike Club, a VIP dinner for top fundraisers, team captain events, plus many online resources for riders to find information about fundraising and training.
