Two of the special sized quad vents were 2200mm x 3000mm with a third 1400mm x 4840mm. Bilco UK Ltd, a leading manufacturer of access doors and vents, has completed delivery of three smoke vents and five roof access hatches for two large office developments in Canary Wharf, London. The main contractor on this development is Canary Wharf Contractors Ltd. The DS3 East and West buildings are purpose built office blocks for accountants Fitch and Co, and audit tax and advisory services provider KPMG. DS3 is part of phase II of the Canary Wharf Development which consists of 16 buildings. Bilco has supplied three of its D-50 REM special sized quad leaf smoke vents. Two of the vents were 2,200 by 3,000 mm and the other vent was 1,400 by 4,840 mm. The ventilators were supplied to building envelope specialist contractor, Prater, which installed them as part of its roofing contract. Five special sized motorized roof hatches were also supplied to the Canary Wharf development to provide emergency escape off the roof. These were installed into pressurized stairwells by sub-contractors Hotchkiss Ltd and Gardener and Co. All hatches (the largest two are 1,050 by 2,650 mm) provide roof access by means of a full-sized concrete stairway complete with heavy duty handrail for safety. Each hatch was fitted with the Bil-guard railing system to offer fall protection when the covers are open. The hatches are fitted with a slam lock latch mechanism and the two larger hatches are also fitted with a strike bolt that locks the cover off at both ends for added security. DS3 is part of phase II of the Canary Wharf Development which contains 16 buildings. James Fisher added: “Bilco specialises in working with its clients to provide them with products that meet their needs. We were able to meet all the requirements for smoke ventilation and roof access at Canary Wharf. Pat McMahon, operations manager at Prater, said: “The Bilco smoke ventilators meet the key requirement of reliability in operation and offer long life with easy maintenance and testing. They have also been swift and easy to install.” These were some of the largest vents that Bilco has manufactured and each vent incorporated Bilco’s new 60-second opening actuators which meet requirements of EN12101-2.
