The 4th of July weekend is always a big
family oriented time. For those who joined in
on the Bob Marshall ride it was a gathering of
our extended foxtrotter family as well.

as planned, at the campsite in the
middle of the prairie. After half an
hour, about 10 of us decided to ride
and explore the prairie, while the
remainder waited and napped. We
rode the mile or so to the end of this
beautiful prairie and upon returning
we found no one else had arrived..
We weren’t worried as they had
great leaders. So, we just ate lunch
and got back on. Returning along
the opposite side of the South Fork
of the Sun River was beautiful beyond description; the rugged Rocky
Mountains, the glistening Sun River,
and the wildflower covered hillsides.
We gathered at the Benchmark
Trailhead Friday. Benchmark is a phenomenal campground. There are three

Sunday was another beautiful
day. The itinerary had changed
from the initial plans and we headed
for Renshaw lake instead. This was
more of a mountainous and treed
ride versus Saturday’s river bottom
trail. Once again the trails were in
great shape and everyone enjoyed
the ride. We had lunch, and a couple people had naps, at the lake.
Three horses did pull shoes just after leaving the lake, but we all made
it back safe and sound.
Clinic News
Well we had our first Clinic for this year. Boy,
what a great day we had at Bob Womack’s
Arena. The sun was shinning, and the weather
was warming up ads the day went on.
We had our showmanship at halter clinic.
There were10 people in attendance at the clinic,
Bob Womack, Erika Stred, Mary Auger, Suzanne Sherick, Kristina Tracer, Thea Grevais,
Cathy Lee, Annette Padgett, Debra Ruggiero,
Karen Philips, Joyce Johnson. Everyone was
saying how good the instructor was. Everyone
never thought that there was that much to learn
doing the Showmanship at halter. Each person
had 30 minutes with the instructor. Some were
brand new to the Showmanship at halter and
other were more seasoned. But all had something to learn under Chris Brown’s instruction.
Everyone came away excited to learn more on
how to handle there horse and the proper way
to present themselves to the judge. All are
hoping that she will be back soon to learn more.
I could not believe the change in the horses
from the beginning of the 30 minutes of the
lesson to the end of that lesson what a change in
the horses and the participants. Here are some
pictures of that clinic.
Please keep your eye on the Calander of Events
to keep up on the clinic that we are having for
the club. We should all continue to learn something new with our beautiful horses that we
have.
If you would like to host a clinic or have a
clinic you would like to see that we have,
please contact Mark Goss at 406-961-3119, or
email: [email protected]

07 Trail Rides
As many of you know I am the trail ride
chairperson again this year for BSFTA.
There’s a bit of work that goes into the
planning and scouting but this is actually enjoyable for me. What I could
use is some help with is ideas… This is
where you come in. Montana and
Idaho are huge states and there’s no
way I can know all the trails. So, do
you know of a large trailhead/campground where we can ride
a couple of days?
For this year we have two National Trail rides in the works and are
looking into possibly a third. Gary and
Tanya Becker of Greybull, WY, are leading
our co-sponsored BHBFTA and BSFTA Fall
Gather National Trail ride, August 17-19,
2007. This ride will be in the Sunlight Basin
again. I hear this is one you don’t want to
miss.
Our second ride, still in the planning stage, is most likely going to be from
Indian Meadows campground, about 5
miles NE of Lincoln, MT, off of Hwy 200. I
haven’t ridden these trails but am told they
are good trails with one 20 mile and one 12
mile loop. There are also numerous trails
that come off the Hart Lake trail that take
you up into the Continental Divide. If
anyone out there has ridden these trails
before, please contact me. I would love
some company on a scouting trip or two.
Be safe and have fun riding.

2006 BSFTA and BHBFTA FALL GATHER NATIONAL TRAIL RIDE
Ride leaders/ Trail bosses:

This year’s Fall Gather
ride brought us back to Crazy

August, in Sula, Montana.

had been busy getting ready
for the upcoming hunting
season. After little more than
an hour we got back on and
watered horses at the developed springhead. Leaving
camp, we continued along
the ridgeline meadow to Porcupine Creek. We took this
trail down to Crazy Creek.
Once down off the hill we
kicked it up a notch and hit a
lick heading for the camp.
We made camp about
4 pm, so had plenty of time to

coin flip as to whether I would
repeat my decision. Ok, I am
adventuresome so would do it

you’re out longer than expected. I know this but ignored my own good sense that
morning..
So here we were, all five
adventurers, at the lookout up
on the deck sunbathing. Our
trail boss mentioned seeing
another trail on the map to get
down and we all agreed to try
and find it. We forgot the forest service map back at camp,
mistake number two. Looking
for Shook Mountain Trail to get
down the mountain took us
along the ridgeline to the
West. Now you must know,
Montana has a lot of trails and
most interconnect with numerous other trails. Well, we
ended up riding about 90 minutes before deciding we
missed our Y. We turned our
tired, thirsty horses around and
backtracked close to 40 minutes to find our turn we missed.
No wonder we missed it the
first time. The trail marker was
on the back side of a tree facing away from us and covered
by a branch. Once on the
Shook Mountain trail the riding
was easy and except for our
exhausted horses, it wasn’t too

Mark suggested inviting media folks to participate in a “celebrity” class.
Bob reported that the Pacific Northwest Fox Trotter club is working hard to improved their versatility competition, and they want to co-host a
performance and versatility show in Spokane
next year. They also emphasized that the Fox
Trotter horses need to know how to fox trot, even
in versatility classes, and they will reinforce that
point with judges.
Bill Free requested that the show chairs add twogait and three-gait classes to the Big Sky Spring
Round-Up ranch and versatility show. After
lengthy discussion, Bill withdrew his request.
2007 BSFTA Points and Circuit Show: Show
chair Rick Padgett reported that the show facility
is Sapphire Event Center, on the Eastside Highway, north of Corvallis, MT. Dates are July 5--6
p.m. for model and showmanship classes, July 6-9 a.m. for performance classes, and July 7--9 a.m.
for versatility. Sapphire Event Center staff will
take care of food concessions, stalls, and electrical hookups. Stalls are $25 per night and that
includes shavings and cleanup. Elmer Scott is the
judge, Donna Goss and Karen Philips are taking

Thea Gervais will take care of publicity, and Rick
still needs volunteers to help set up and take
down trail class obstacles and other versatility
equipment and with other tasks. There will be a
dinner on Friday night, with food provided by the
Sapphire Event Center staff. There will also be
fun classes on Friday night. Bob noted that this is
a premier facility with an outdoor arena for
warming up, and we are paying the same price as
we did at the fairgrounds. Mark will cancel our
tentative date with the fairgrounds next Monday.
Rick suggested that we book the 2008 date now
at Sapphire Event Center. Pete Peterson moved
and Mark seconded that we book the show at
Sapphire Event Center now for 2008, preferably
for July 17-19, 2008. This would involve a $100
fee to book it ahead. Motion passed.
Thea asked for a calendar of events so she can
plan trail rides around already scheduled events
and so members can make plans for the spring,
summer, and fall. She asked that we publish our
calendar of events in our newsletter. Karen will
pull this together.

Tansy ragwort (Senecio spp.)
Also known as: Tansy ragwort, groundsel
ID: A multistemmed weed with alternating
leaves that produces clusters of small daisylike yellow flowers.
Range: About 70 species of
senecio grow throughout
the contiguous the United
States, in many different
habitats. Many are common
in pastures and along roadsides.
The danger: Levels of toxicity vary among
different members of the species, but all
are thought to contain at least some concentration of pyrrolizidine alkaloids,
which inhibit cell division, especially in
the liver. Damage to the liver is cumulative and irreversible, and most horses
succumb to chronic exposure over time,
after consuming between 50 and 150
pounds, in total.
Signs: Often, there is no evidence of consumption until signs of liver failure begin
to appear: photosensitization, diminished

then came back to join us. We then
ponied Wink behind the cart a while,
then Rosalind safely resumed her ride
home behind us.
Carting is a lot of fun, and develops a
good quiet mind on your horse. I would
encourage other members to start training by doing ground driving in the winter, starting to drag things behind their
horse, even using a saddle. We have
quite a few experienced drivers in the
valley that could assist those who are
interested in learning. It's just another
avenue to show the breed's versatility.
I was riding last year with a friend on an
Icelandic horse. We've ridden miles together so we know the horses and each
other very well. On one such ride, the
horses were hot and we rode them down
into a stream/slough. The Icey likes water and enjoys playing in the water. He
went in right up to his belly and started
pawing the water all over his owner. We
were laughing until we noticed that he
had slipped his head stall into the deep
water. My Fox Trotter Possum is known
for being a very oral boy. We were trying to find a way to get the headstall out
of the muck and water without my friend
having to dismount in the waist deep water. We tried with a crop, hands and feet
but were unable to snag the head stall.
The Icey continued to paw the water and
the head stall started to sink. I said, "Let's
get Possum, he likes anything in his
mouth". He's been known to pick up
sticks, brooms, shovels, etc. I walked
him over to the area and gave him his
head. He reached down and right away
picked the headstall out of the water and
proudly gave it back to my friend. We
were laughing so hard we both almost
fell into the water. I was very proud of
him for saving the day. That ride is
memorable because of Possum and his
oral ways.
Kari Swenson
Don't know if I can say it was between me
and my horse, but I was there. My farrier
and his wife, Joe and Kay Gervais, were
over here shoeing one of my horses.
Afterwards, we were sitting on my lawn
chairs by the barn having a beer. Sugarfoot came over to Kay's chair, just standing behind her, for at least 15 minutes.
He was so curious about Kay's long blond
hair and that interesting bow on the back
of her head. Pretty soon, Sugarfoot decided that bow had to come out of her
hair. He gently grabbed it in his
teeth several times trying to lift it out.
The look on Kay's face was so funny - Joe

Dear BSFTA members,
I am sorry to inform you that Ole Netteberg's
wife Shirley passed away March 20, 2007.
Ole is a past BSFTA president and director,
and he and Shirley were very active trail ride
participants. We will sure miss Shirley, her
sense of humor and her big smile. If
you wish to make a contribution in
Shirley's memory, she asked for donations to the youth ministry program at
her church instead of flowers. Shirley
was a member there since she was a
child.
