TUESDAY, JAN. 26, 2016 ADVERTISING SECTION HealthLink GUIDE TO WELLNESS HEALTHY START 2016 featuring ➊ Heart & Stroke Awareness ➋ Weight Loss ➌ Dental Health ➍ Hearing NEWSDAY.COM/SPECIALSECTIONS 2114913301 SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION Spreading the word about heart disease, stroke risk in women By Vanessa Caceres H eart disease is the number one killer of women in the U.S. If you find that surprising, you’re not alone. “Heart disease is not a man’s disease only. That’s a myth,” said Dr. Andressa Borges, a cardiologist with Long Island Heart Associates, with various locations. And stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. Heart disease and stroke kill one in three women in the U.S., according to the American Heart Association. In women of color, including African Americans and Latinas, heart disease and stroke can be more common because the populations traditionally have had higher rates of diabetes, obesity, and high cholesterol. These things all increase the risk for heart disease. The risk factors that lead to heart disease are the same for both men and women, said Dr. Louise Spadaro, a cardiologist at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn. These include a history of structural damage to the heart, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and smoking. However, a woman’s experience of heart disease and heart attack is different than a man’s in a few other ways. For instance, with a heart attack, women may experience chest pain like men do, but it may not be as intense. Women are more likely to feel fatigue, jaw pain, or have trouble sleeping, Borges said. The way that plaque builds up in women’s vessels sometimes makes it harder to diagnose heart disease, Borges said. There’s also a heart problem called microvascular disease that is more common in women. In addition to the usual suspects of diabetes or high cholesterol raising the risk for heart disease, some women’s health issues make them more susceptible. “Women with irregular periods and polycystic ovary syndrome may have a higher risk of heart disease as they age,” Borges said. In the African American and Hispanic communities, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity all raise the risk for serious health problems. In fact, African American women have twice the risk of stroke compared with white women, Borges said. In women of color, genetics also play a role in raising the chances of heart disease. Making Changes The first step to try and fight heart disease and stroke is awareness, Borges says. “Awareness is important because that’s how you’re going to prevent it and get treatment,” she said. Yet a 2012 study from the American Heart Association found that even though awareness about the dangers of heart disease in women had increased compared with the 1990s, many women of color were still not aware of that risk, Borges said. The ways to cut down on your risk for heart disease and stroke are probably things you’ve heard before—but with the new year starting, now’s a good time to really follow that advice. Change your diet to eat more fruits, vegetables, and high-fiber foods. Limit your salt intake. Lose weight if you need to do so. Exercise more. Stop smoking, and seek help if you can’t stop smoking on your own. Also, talk to your doctor about your risk for heart disease or stroke, and get regular physicals to track your blood pressure, pulse, blood count, cholesterol, and risk for thyroid disease, Spadaro said. This is something you should do even if you are younger, as heart disease is affecting more and more young women. Depending on any symptoms you might have related to heart disease, your doctor may even want to perform a test called an electrocardiogram, or ECG. There are additional tests doctors might perform to measure your risk for heart disease or stroke, Spadaro said. NEWSDAY, TUESDAY, JANUARY 26, 2016 newsday.com HEALTHLINK: HEALTHY START N H2 PRODUCED BY NEWSDAY SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTIONS To participate in upcoming sections please contact: VERONICA JENNINGS [email protected] Heart Health and Stroke Awareness To boost awareness of the unique heart-health issues faced by women, the American Heart Association has special events in February and outreach that it does throughout the year, said Jessica DiMeo, senior regional director of communications for the American Heart Association in Plainview. Feb. 5, which is the first Friday in February, will be National Wear Red Day, as designated by the American Heart Association, DiMeo said. Wearing red helps to bring attention to the heart disease and stroke risk in women. On Feb. 11, the American Heart Association will have its 15th Annual Long Island Go Red for Women Luncheon at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, with a luncheon reception, silent auction, networking, and female survival stories. There will also be educational sessions. The AHA also has a number of community outreach programs both locally and around the country to educate women and women of color about heart disease risk. Go Red Por Tu Corazón reaches out to the Hispanic community, and Have Faith in Heart has a strong focus on African American women and usually has events that takes place at churches and places of worship, DiMeo said. The AHA is also working with Metropolitan Transit Authority and the Transit Workers’ Union for their health fairs, health awareness, and promotion activities, DiMeo said. Through May, the AHA and the American Stroke Association will provide healthy moments announcements on several local radio stations. And a program called Healthy Food Financing will target investments in underserved communities to help provide access to healthier food choices. 2114913801 H3 HEALTHLINK: HEALTHY START N newsday.com NEWSDAY, TUESDAY, JANUARY 26, 2016 | SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION ALL MATERIAL SUPPLIED BY THE ADVERTISERS H4 NORTH SHORE HEMATOLOGY HEALTHLINK: HEALTHY START N Personalized medicine at NSHOA Cancer Center N SHOA Cancer Center has become the largest comprehensive cancer care provider on Long Island with 14 state-of-the-art treatment facilities throughout Suffolk County. The physicians at NSHOA focus on staying ahead of the curve in personalized medicine development and in clinical research. NSHOA has 25 dedicated medical oncologists, and three radiation oncologists in addition to supportive staff such as psychologists, dietitians, educators and therapists. As one cohesive medical team, every step of a patient’s treatment with NSHOA can be completed within one of our community-based facilities, from diagnostic imaging, medical infusions, hematologic testing, radiation therapy, and nutritional/psychological services. What sets NSHOA apart from other centers is its technology and successful clinical research department. Participating in more than 65 clinical trials NSHOA is able to introduce groundbreaking therapies and technologies to all patients. NSHOA Cancer Center has recently joined the network of Caris [Life Sciences] Centers of Excellence. This network opens the door for the physicians at NSHOA to leverage the Caris Molecular Intelligence tumor profiling service along. “The multi-platform approach provided by Caris better equips our physicians with the comprehensive molecular data for our patients, which can enhance therapy selection, clinical trial participation and further our understanding of the biology of patient tumors,” Jeffrey Vacirca, M.D., CEO of NSHOA Cancer Center. In the ever-changing dynamic of personalized medicine, NSHOA Cancer Center continues to implement sophisticated technologies into their treatment options. Through the new partnerships with Caris and Nanostring the physicians at NSHOA are able to further provide comprehensive medical care within their patient’s communities. NSHOA Cancer Center can be reached at 631-751-3000 or at nshoa.com. The physicians at NSHOA are able to make personalized medicine a reality to even more of their patients with access to Nanostring’s Prosigna PAM50 test (a prognostic gene signature assay test). The nCounter-based Prosigna assay allows NSHOA physicians to quickly and accurately analyze the patient’s gene expression and make informed treatment decisions about the need for chemotherapy in early stage breast cancer. With this technology located within their laboratories, the physicians at NSHOA are able to make wellguided care decisions based on the risk of distant recurrence with short turn around time. ©2014Thinkstockphotos.com E xercise can make you fitter. It can also ward off many unexpected diseases, from heart attacks, strokes, and some forms of cancer, to diabetes and dementia. There are signs that exercise may also make you more clever by boosting cognitive performance and brain function. The latest government guidelines recommend adults under 65 do 150 minutes of moderate physical activity every week, in bouts of at least 10 minutes. A fitness class called Tabata, named after Japanese scientist Izumi Tabata, claims that just 4 minutes of exercise, in 20-second bursts interspersed by 10 seconds of rest, is enough to significantly boost your fitness and get you in shape. When Tabata put a group of speed-skating students through this regime five times a week for six weeks, they ended up significantly fitter than another group who ran at a medium intensity for an hour on a treadmill. Omega-3 fatty acids lower the risk of mini-strokes and brain abnormalities as we age by up to 40 percent. A research group from the University of Eastern Finland has published the results of a study in the Journal of the American Heart Association that explains how high long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid content in blood may lower the risk of small brain infarcts and other brain abnormalities in the elderly. Brain infarcts dramatically increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia that currently affect more than 5 million individuals in the U.S. Peer-reviewed results from this study demonstrate the critical importance of regular consumption of fatty fish (several servings per week) or regular supplementation with a purified fish oil product (1,200 to 2,400 mg EPA/ DHA daily) to maintain optimal brain and cardiovascular health. Patients also find themselves no longer dependent on medications including insulin injections. Many patients of this program have seen drastic improvements or reversal of conditions such as sleep apnea, hypertension and asthma. Dr. Arif Ahmad and Mather Hospital have jointly been a Center of Excellence since 2007 and were awarded another three year renewal on their status as Center of Excellence. With the additional three years that were awarded in 2014, they are the only program in New York to have been granted a continuous 10 year recognition as “Bariatric Center of Excellence” by the SRC. They utilize world class surgical expertise in the treatment of morbid obesity including; Gastric Sleeve, Gastric Banding and Gastric Bypass, using minimally invasive and virtually scar less surgical techniques. In Dr. Ahmad’s program at Mather Hospital the Sleeve Gastrectomy has become the most commonly selected procedure with fantastic results. The surgery shrinks the stomach to approximately 15 percent of its original size and also removes the portion of the stomach that is responsible for hunger (the hormone Ghrelin) is reduced as a result of removing this part of the stomach. In addition to relieving symptoms and helping patients lose weight, patients find that they benefit from the laparoscopic technique which provides advantages such as smaller incisions, less scarring, shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery times. Dr. Ahmad also pioneered, in the area, robotic assisted bariatric procedures utilizing the da Vinci Robot, the most advanced surgical platform in the world. If an annual eye exam is common practice, why isn’t a hearing exam? Hearing loss has been found to have a strong correlation with many other healthcare issues such as cognitive decline, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and depression. Hearing loss can also be a side effect of other medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Your inner ear is extremely dependent on blood flow so any conditions that affect the blood can in turn affect your hearing. A routine audiological evaluation will tell you whether your hearing is beginning to decline. The early diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss is an important step in preserving one’s cognitive ability. The first step in incorporating hearing into your health care plan is to have an audiological evaluation. At Ear Works Audiology, we encourage everyone over the age of 50 to have their hearing examined annually as part of an overall wellness program. OTO HEALTHCARE SUFFOLK NEWSDAY, TUESDAY, JANUARY 26, 2016 newsday.com Probably sooner than you think A s the old story goes, there’s good news and bad news about hearing loss. The good news is that the human brain is amazingly good at adapting to many different kinds of obstacles, including things like hearing loss. You may be suffering from slight decline right now and be hardly aware of it, because you’ve found ways to compensate--simple things like turning your head and leaning forward to hear better; or asking people to repeat what they’ve said; or waiting for the conversation to move on so you can catch up. Maybe you’re adapting by simply avoiding social situations like noisy restaurants and parties, where the background noise makes it so hard to understand the conversation that you really have to strain to hear. Know what you’re missing So what’s the bad news? You may be adapting so well that you don’t know what you’re missing. You’re unaware of lost information, lost opportunities, and the lost energy you spend just trying to keep up. You just know that social situations are more tiring than they used to be. Those embarrassing moments when you don’t catch someone’s name or some other important bit of information are growing more frequent. If you’re like many people with age-related hearing loss, the condition progresses as you get older. And as it progresses, you work harder to cope, maybe without even realizing it. As good as your brain may be at adapting, the effort it takes tends to diminish the parts of your life that matter most: sharing with friends and family, keeping ahead in your business, and spending time out in the community. People with advanced hearing loss describe this state as a feeling of isolation, of being trapped. They find it physically and emotionally tiring to strain to hear a conversation in a noisy setting. It’s just too hard to make the effort. So they give up. Break through the isolation with new hearing technology There is help for people with hearing loss: a wonderful array of modern hearing solutions that can make it easier to break through the wall of noise and focus on what’s important. Modern hearing technology can not only help bring you back to a fuller and more vibrant social life; it can make things like concerts, radio, telephone, and TV much more rewarding experiences than ever before. But what happens is that people tend to put off getting help later than they should. They adapt a little more, and miss out a little more, every year. They don’t realize how much they’re struggling, and living increasingly isolated lives. Don’t let old myths about hearing aids delay your chance at a fuller life There are a variety of reasons that people put off getting help. The main one is a lack of understanding of what modern hearing technology is and how it helps. We’ve found that there are at least three big myths that keep people from trying out hearing technology, putting them on the road to years of frustration and isolation instead of a happier life. HEALTHLINK: HEALTHY START N 369 EAST MAIN STREET, SUITE 18 EAST ISLIP, NY 11730 (631) 277-1600 · FAX (631) 277-1638 Concerning the quality of the radiology equipment. When choosing a radiology site for your MRI, you may want to know whether the MRI is a 3.0 Tesla (highest quality), 1.5 Tesla, 1.0 Tesla or even 0.3 Tesla (lowest quality and still being used in many places). The higher the Tesla, the better the images. Concerning the cost of your study. You pay for your health insurance and your health insurance pays for your radiology study. Some radiology sites (hospitals and hospital owned imaging centers) are reimbursed at a much higher rate than other radiology sites (private practice imaging centers). Where you choose to have your study may affect your out of pocket expenses and your future premium costs. An MRI performed in a private office such as Zilkha Radiology, costs thousands of dollars less than an MRI performed in a hospital or hospital owned outpatient imaging center. This is a huge price difference especially since the radiology equipment is identical. If your insurance company pays more for your MRI, CT, PET-CT, Mammography, Ultrasound, X-ray, Dexa scan, Biopsy, Nuclear Medicine exam, you can be sure the cost will be passed on to you in the form of higher premiums, co-pays and deductibles. newsday.com An easy way to lower the cost of your radiology study and possibly your future insurance premiums is to visit a high quality private imaging center such as Zilkha Radiology. That’s the advice of medical experts who say reducing your expanding midsection can eliminate a major risk affecting health and longevity. If your legs are thin and your weight is centered around your abdomen, and you have other risk factors, you are actually at a greater risk of early death than someone whose weight distribution is proportionate, according to Dr. Rajeev Vohra, chief of minimally-invasive surgery at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside. “As a patient’s weight increases, their health problems increase,” says Dr. Arif Ahmad, director of the Bariatric Center of Excellence at John T. Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson. New international diet strategies and exercise regimens that emphasize quality over quantity, can help increase your general health and prolong your life, the doctors say. A Lifeline for Overweight Americans Being overweight continues to be a national epidemic. As many as two-thirds of adults and one third of children and adolescents are currently considered to be overweight or obese, according to the National Institutes of Health. The results of being chronically overweight include conditions such as diabetes, sleep disorders, high blood pressure, acid-reflux disease and joint pains. For patients who are 100 pounds over their ideal body weight, or 80 pounds overweight with health problems, losing weight is a medical imperative with life expectancy reduced by 10 to 12 years, Ahmad says. The good news? A weight loss of approximately 5 to 15 percent significantly helps to reduce health risks, says Sameera Khan, a Registered Dietician Nutritionist and bariatric coordinator at North Shore University Hospital, Manhasset. Changes in Risk Assessment If you’ve consulted a doctor about weight loss, you’ve probably been screened for Body Mass Index, a number NEWSDAY, TUESDAY, JANUARY 26, 2016 newsday.com Healthy Eating Tips Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Choose fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products. Add lean meats, chicken, fish, beans, eggs and nuts. Avoid as much as possible foods high in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, sodium, and added sugars. Stay within daily calorie needs. that attempts to determine your body fat based upon your weight and height. However, Vohra says nowadays he is placing more emphasis on metabolic syndrome, a group of five factors that can raise your risk for heart disease and other health problems. The syndrome includes central or abdominal obesity (weight concentrated around your waistline), high blood pressure, high blood sugar measured while you are fasting, high levels of triglicerides (fat found in blood) and low HDL (good) cholesterol levels. Convinced that you need to lose weight? Take heart, it’s a no-brainer. The cornerstones of weight loss continue to be those old reliables: “behavior modifications that include a calorie-controlled meal plan along with physical activity,” Khan says. Start by consulting a registered dietician. They can assess variables such as your dietary habits, your daily caloric intake, and your metabolic rate (the amount of calories needed for basic functions). The dietitian can then provide a guide to daily calorie consumption and exercise that should lead to weight loss, Khan says. Hope for International Diets Among the tools at a dietician’s disposal are a number of new international diet trends, Khan says. The Souping Diet, based upon eating soups, is “like juicing but includes the fiber,” Khan says. A diet rich in “pulses,” as dry beans, lentils and chick peas are called in other countries, provides protein, fiber and a longer feeling of fullness because these foods are digested slowly. Weight-loss Websites Go online for free diet advice: • Calorieking.com – calorie counting based upon age, gender, height, weight and activity level • Eatright.org – tips from The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics • Sparkpeople.com features a calorie-counter with a database of over 2 million foods • Obesityaction.org – support and ideas for Americans suffering the disease of obesity to some of the simplest operations, like fixing a hernia or taking out a gall bladder,” Vohra says. An alternative, laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, uses suture-like staples to create a pouch in the top of the stomach. “You get the best weight loss and the least amount of weight regain,” Ahmad says. Sleeve gastrectomy, another popular surgical procedure, staples the stomach into a long tube, through a small incision, to accommodate a greatly reduced volume. Khan suggests this tip: shop at a market where dietitians host food demonstrations on healthy choices. Diet can’t do it alone; you also need exercise, providing a one-two weight-loss punch that apparently appeals to a majority of Americans. A recent Gallup poll reported 55.5 percent of Americans exercise for 30 minutes, three or more days a week. Get results with 20 minutes of vigorous exercise, 3 or 4 times a week, to a peak heart rate at 80 percent of maximum, Vohra says. Short bursts of high intensity exercise offer the most benefit, such as spinning, Zumba classes, or the treadmill, he says. The Surgical Alternative If you’ve tried and failed to lose weight, you may be a candidate for weight-loss surgery – as long as you’re motivated to reduce. “You want to make sure that they have the capacity to lose weight,” Vohra says. One of the newer technologies is a gastric balloon placed in the stomach with an endoscopic procedure, and inflated to take up space for a feeling of fullness. Bariatric surgery is an option for patients with a Body Mass Index greater than 40, or greater than 35 with additional factors such diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea. “We can now do complex weight loss surgeries with a safety profile which is similar Source: USDA 2114915101 H13 WATCH DR. The ORBERA Intragastric Balloon combines a gastric balloon in conjunction with a 12-month behavioral modification program for long-term weight-loss success. Within two weeks, she dropped 12 pounds. “I feel like I’ve gotten a full-button reset,” says Kim, who is well on her way to meeting her goal to shed 50 more pounds off her 185-pound frame. “Recent studies demonstrated the use of the balloon resulted in 3.1 times more weight loss than dieting alone,” says Rajeev Vohra, MD, FACS, director of South Nassau’s minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. “This is an effective form of weight-loss therapy, especially for patients like Kim who had a BMI (body mass index) of less than 35.” Under sedation, the deflated silicone balloon is placed into the stomach through the mouth and is then inflated. The balloon decreases how much food the stomach can hold and is designed to make the patient feel full. The procedure is part of a 12-month coaching program that includes a supervised diet and exercise program. After six months, the balloon is deflated and removed and the supervised weight-loss program continues for an additional six months. Candidates for the gastric balloon are adults who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater and have been unsuccessful with conventional weight-loss programs. “The gastric balloon is really helping me feel full and I am finally losing weight.” says Kim. Hearing health important for whole body health D espite the rapid growth of hearing loss —now the third most common health condition in the US — there remains little national attention on good hearing and its long-term benefits. Multiple studies confirm the importance of good hearing health in attaining whole body health — emotional and physical — as we age. Typically, you get fitted for a crown in one appointment, then you have to return a few weeks later once the crown is made by a dental lab. If something with the crown isn’t a good fit, you may have to return yet again. Now, more and more often, dental offices are breaking that traditional model with help from something called chairside computer-aided design/ computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/ CAM) dental technology. CAD/CAM, used with a technology called CEREC, can scan your teeth in full color and stitch the images together to create a three-dimensional model, said Staten Island dentist Craig Ratner, chair of the New York State Dental Association’s technology task force. After the dentist reviews and adjusts the 3-D model, the information is sent to a milling machine in the office that carves the crown, inlay, or onlay in just a few minutes. That means that patients getting crowns can get everything done in one visit. A visit using the CEREC technology will take 45 minutes to an hour or two, depending on what’s being done. “That includes anesthesia, preparation of the tooth, scanning, design, milling, and cementing,” Ratner said. He has worked on multiple teeth at a time, and each tooth adds 10 to 15 minutes to the visit. Although CEREC technology has been around for 30 years, it hasn’t always been easy to use—and the technology is expensive for dentists. About 10 percent of dentists in the U.S. currently have CEREC, Ratner estimated. But that percentage is changing. “The number of dentists incorporating this technology is growing at an exponential rate,” he said. “The advancements in technology make the process faster and easier.” In addition to the time-saving for patients, dentist Lauren Argentina of Modern Dentistry of Long Island in Port Jefferson said that CEREC cuts down on the discomfort or gagging sensation that some patients experience when they get fitted for crowns in a traditional way. Plus, patients only need anesthesia once. “No one ever complains about that,” she said. “The technology is great for the many dental phobics in our community.” The ceramic material used in the crowns made with CEREC expands and contracts just like natural dental enamel, Argentina said. The material is just as strong as the traditional material used for crowns, she added. Not all crowns can be made with CEREC. “Porcelain fused to metal, zirconia, gold, long-span bridges, and dentures would still be processed by a traditional laboratory,” Argentina said. Still, dentists can use the technology to take a digital impression and send that to the lab, so the prostheses are returned to the practice more quickly than usual. Look and feel amazing! innitus is hearing a sound where none exists. For some, tinnitus is simply ignored. That’s similar to living next to the railroad; people who live there do not notice the sound of a train as it goes by until a stranger remarks on the noise. For some, tinnitus is troubling only when it is quiet. Running a fan or watching television, or listening to music or books on tape may help them ignore the tinnitus. Some wear standard hearing aids for an acoustically enriched environ-ment and report no further tinnitus disturbance. But for others, tinnitus is overwhelming. Their reaction to the tinnitus intensifies. The limbic system associates a truly negative emotion with the sound, leading to increased involvement from the autonomic nervous system, causing an overwhelmingly vicious cycle of sound. Sleep is often disturbed, and enjoyment of life is compromised. For these people, help is available; make an appointment for a comprehensive tinnitus evaluation and learn what maybe beneficial for you. There are many treatments available and success has been demonstrated for many patients. Whether using Tinnitus Retraining Therapy, targeted acoustically enriched environments, Neuromonics, Serenade, PAXX or sound generators, each patient receives a personalized treatment recommendation. Add to that list: scheduling a hearing test. “A hearing evaluation should be a routine part of your annual wellness visits,” says Anne Capogna, doctor of audiology at Ear Works Audiology. “Those with hearing loss are at a greater risk for cognitive decline, depression and isolation. In addition, hearing loss is a side effect to other medical conditions such as tinnitus, diabetes, and hypertension.” About 14 percent of adults ages 45 to 64, and 30 percent over age 65, are hearing impaired, says Gloria Boms, doctor of audiology at GB Audiology in Great Neck. An examination can trace hearing loss to wax build-up, fluid or an infection in the canal or middle ear – all generally temporary, treatable conditions. However, hearing loss caused by noise, aging or certain drugs, and affecting the nerve beyond the middle ear, can be permanent. It can be treated effectively with digital hearing aids or, in more severe cases, a cochlear implant, says Seth Ofgang, a doctor of audiology and co-director of Huntington Hearing. More accurate hearing tests and state-of-the-art hearing aids that use cell phone technology, as well as possible links to other health issues, are among the reasons to have your ears examined. Hearing Loss in Children Young children can also suffer hearing loss, which can affect them in the classroom and socially, experts say. Children should be tested even before starting school because “hearing loss from middle ear fluid can cause speech delays,” Ofgang says. Periodic school or pediatric hearing tests should be followed up if a child has a history of ear infections, responds inconsistently to verbal directions, displays speech or language delay or exhibits learning difficulty in the classroom, Boms says. Audiologists recommend a “baseline” screening at least once between the ages of 21 and 60. See your doctor immediately if you have a sudden hearing loss, which may be caused by a virus treatable with steroids, Ofgang says. Getting Tested Lisa Milano, a New York State-licensed hearing instrument specialist who owns Quality Hearing Aid Center in Riverhead, says that hearing acuity can now be tested with greater accuracy by an audiometer with spongy inserts, which are placed inside the ear canal. If the test detects more than mild hearing loss, she says, “you are definitely a candidate for a hearing aid.” Protect Your Ears • If you’re exposed to hazardous noise levels at work, wear earplugs or muffs. • Don’t blast your home stereo. If you wear headphones and others can hear the music, it’s too loud. • Avoid cleaning with Q-tips, which can push the wax further into your ear and injure your eardrum. 2114916201 100% invisible • Clear, natural sound • No daily hassles • No batteries to change • The contact lens for your ear. Since hearing loss is gradual, you do not realize how much your quality of life may be deteriorated. Ignoring a hearing problem can negatively impact your life in several critical ways: • Embarrassment and avoidance of social activities • Fatigue, irritability and stress • Impaired memory • Reduced overall psychological health Those who are still in the workforce, have additional consequences: • Less adaptability to learning new tasks • Reduced earning power • Reduced opportunity of promotion • Less overall job effectiveness The benefits of hearing aids Today’s sophisticated, technologically advanced hearing aids are a vast improvement over those available even a few years ago. Most are digital, “miniature computers” that have essentially eliminated “whistling” and “buzzing,” provide a more “natural” sound, can automatically adjust from one hearing environment to the next, and can be programmed to help you hear in the places where you spend the most time. Even the social stigma is going away Others will be much less aware of a hearing aid than you will be, and that misinterpreting words, responding inappropriately and being left out of conversations are much more obvious than a hearing aid. Because of digital technology, most hearing instruments today are very discreet, and many are virtually invisible to the average person. Now there’s a new technologically advanced surgical procedure that will allow you to walk immediately after the procedure, with minimal down time, no crutches, no cast and early return to work. The surgeons at Livingston Foot Care Specialists have extensive surgical training and experience in this technologically advanced procedure. A bunion is a poorly aligned big toe joint. Bunions are often caused by an inherited foot type, foot injuries, and certain deformities and can be exacerbated by high heels or ill-fitting shoes. This may lead to swelling, redness, or soreness around the big toe joint, thickening of the skin at the base of the big toe, corns or calluses, pain, and restricted movement of the big toe. By pushing the big toe inward, a bunion can squeeze your other toes into abnormal positions causing hammertoe deformities. The reduction of the size of the bulge or herniation offers relief by taking the pressure off the spinal nerve. Compression on nerves can cause pain in the neck, back, arm, or leg. Dr. Solomon has performed thousands of treatments on patients with chronic back and neck pain, who thought there was no hope left. This technique, which is gentle and relaxing, offers an effective long-term solution without any of the risks of surgery. It works by slowly increasing the space between the bones of the spine. Having undiagnosed hearing loss is no way to live Technological advances in Dentistry for your benefit S T ome 36 million people have hearing loss, according to Dr. Shelley A. Borgia, co-founder of NYC Hearing Associates of Garden City, which provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss. “People often overlook signs for years,” she says. “Often, family and friends are often the ones who suggest that the person seek diagnosis because hearing loss also takes a toll on their relationships.” Common signs of hearing loss include difficulty understanding in back-ground noise, turning the television louder than others like it, difficulty following conversation in a crowd, carrying on telephone conversations, ringing in the ears and feeling as though others mumble. Dr. Borgia recommends that people with any of these symptoms seek an evaluation with an audiologist (a highly edu-cated, clinically trained professional) who can identify the cause and extent of hearing loss and suggest ways of overcoming it. “Hearing loss affects more than communication” says Dr. Jessica M. Frankel, a board certified audiologist. “It has social, physical, psychological and cognitive consequences. People with hearing loss often become isolated, feeling less connected to friends and family. Their cognitive function declines because they cannot process words. Stress increases. Some people become depressed or anxious because they have difficulty coping with their environment.” Nearly everyone age 50 and older experiences some degree of age related hearing loss.. Among older adults, hearing loss is the third most common chronic health condition after arthritis and hypertension. Hearing loss can occur at any age. “Young people are experiencing hearing loss because of noise and loud music,” said Dr. Borgia. “Fortunately we can create custom hearing protection for people who work or live in noisy places.” Dr. Borgia and Dr. Frankel have patients ranging from young children to a 103 year olds. Is something being missed? R ecent studies have found that a high percentage of pain is caused by restrictions in connective tissue of the body known as fascia. Fascial restrictions do not show up in any of the medical tests now being performed, so they often go unnoticed and misdiagnosed. If traditional medical treatment, including medications, physical therapy, or surgery has failed to relieve a person’s pain, then the person is likely to have fascial restrictions. These fascial restrictions have the potential of putting enormous pressure on nerves and bulge discs, pulling the body out of proper alignment, and/or compressing joint surfaces. All this causes much of the pain that people suffer with. Fascia surrounds and infuses every other structure of the body including muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels, and organs. It also attaches to every bone in the body and is continuous from head to toe. COVE AUDIOLOGY AND HEARING SERVICES NEWSDAY, TUESDAY, JANUARY 26, 2016 newsday.com Normally, fascia should be mostly fluid, and flexible. What happens from trauma, inflammation, surgery, or poor postures, is the fascia will shorten, dehydrate and solidify. It has been shown that this shortening of fascia has the potential to exert forces of up to 2,000-pounds-per-square-inch on pain sensitive structures, like nerves. Also, as it becomes restricted and shortens, it can compress joints including the spine, and pull the body out of proper alignment. (See ad on back cover). The good news is that fascial restrictions can be treated safely and effectively using a technique called Myofascial Release (MFR). MFR is a handson technique where a trained therapist applies gentle, but firm sustained pressures into areas of the body that have become tight and restricted. It is only through sustained pressure that this tightness can be “released.” Traditional massage and physical therapy techniques do not hold pressures long enough to get a complete release of the tissue. Massage does have some value, and it does release a component of the fascia, but not its totality, leading only to temporary results (a couple of hours to a couple of days at most). It is only MFR, performed by a highly skilled therapist (trained by John F. Barnes, I t’s very easy to forget how important hearing is to our quality of life. After all, we live in a visually oriented society, so hearing often plays a secondary role. There is no doubt that the inability to hear well will negatively affect your communication skills. Yet today 32 million Americans experience hearing loss and nearly 80 percent of them do not seek help. Imagineif80percentofthosewithpoor eyesight did not receive treatment. Today’s sophisticated, technologically advanced hearing aids are a vast improvement over those available even a few years ago. Most are digital, “miniature computers” that have essentially eliminated “whistling” and “buzzing,” provide a more “natural” sound, can automatically adjust from one hearing environment to the next, and can be programmed to fit your lifestyle.Even more impressive than the technical advances are the ways a hearing aid can improve your quality of life: • Increased self-esteem • More social activity • Increased emotional stability • Greater earning power If you or a loved one has mild, moderate or severe hearing loss, consider all the benefits listed above and you’ll quickly see how hearing treatment can have a positive impact on many, many lives. Traditional medical approaches to treating chronic pain are focused on treating only the symptom, which may help, but only temporarily. Loading someone up on pain killers, anti-inflammatory medicine, and epidurals without treating the underlying cause of the problem is the equivalent of unplugging your fire alarm while your house is burning to the ground. Some common conditions successfully treated using MFR, even when all other treatments have failed are: back pain, neck pain, headaches, TMJ, fibromyalgia, arthritis and joint pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, myofascial pain syndrome, vertigo, incontinence, pelvic pain, and other women’s health conditions. D PURE DENTAL HEALTHLINK: HEALTHY START N H24 ental implant technology is rapidly improving and scientific advancements using 3D images and CT scans have made the placement of implants a much more streamlined process. Many patients who were not implant candidates because of shrinking bone are able to have implants designed to work where conventional implants can’t fit. We have moved our practice to a brand new facility with its own laboratory, making it possible for patients to have implant-supported dentures in a matter of days. Pretty soon, we will have the process streamlined so that many of these implant-supported dentures can be done in a single day if necessary. There are many situations where the removal of teeth can be done with the simultaneous placement of dental implants and the denture or bridge placed at the same appointment. At Pure Dental, we will have a dental team of surgeons and dentists who can do the surgery necessary and place the bridge immediately or soon thereafter. We have the capability to have an anesthesiologist perform IV sedation, conscious sedation, or nitrous oxide to make your dental visits as comfortable as possible. And, to take your mind off of the dentist, each treatment room has its own television, mounted on the ceiling, to make your visit comfortable and with the least amount of stress. Taking advantage of this technology, and combining specialists under one roof, has allowed Pure Dental to offer affordable fees and customized financial arrangements making it not only physically possible but also financially possible to make dentures and missing teeth unnecessary. Pure Dental is located at: 496 County Road 111, Bldg. F, Manorville. While it’s true that cosmetic conditions such as spider veins (clusters of discolored veins) arise mostly in women, there are other vein conditions — even painful ones — that occur in men equally. Previously, most large varicose veins were treated through an in-hospital procedure commonly known as “vein stripping.” Vein stripping removes the problematic veins, but the postoperative recovery was quite painful and prolonged. Today, virtually all large varicose veins can be treated through an office-based procedure, non-surgical procedure, known as Endovenous Laser For more information on how to schedule a free vein screening at the North Shore Vein Center, call 516-869-VEIN (8346) or visit our website LongIslandVein.com.
