Pocket diapers are the one of the most popular systems today. This type of modern
cloth diaper consists of two separate pieces:
1. The pocket piece is made of waterproof fabric – typically PUL—and wraps
snugly around the baby with elasticized legs and an adjustable waist closure.
Sewn to the waterproof outer layer of the pocket is a soft layer of a synthetic
“stay-dry” fabric such as microfleece that touches baby’s skin. One or both
ends of the pocket may have an opening to allow the insert to be stuffed inside.
2. The absorbent insert fits inside the pocket between the stay-dry fabric and the
waterproof fabric. Inserts are frequently made of microfiber but can also be
cotton, bamboo, or hemp.
When the diaper is changed, the insert should be pulled out of the pocket and both
pieces tossed in the diaper pail. The pocket should not be re-used. Washing the pieces separately helps to ensure that all pieces get adequately clean.
