Soaker
The absorbent inner layer of the diaper
er is referred to as the soaker or insert.
Diaper Cover
The
he outer liner that goes over an absorbent inner layer (soaker). Diaper covers are usually waterproof, however they
can be made of wool or polar fleece, which are water resistant, not waterproof. Some diapers have the
th cover built-in or
securely attached to the inner liner with snaps, while others are completely separate. Diaper covers are usually
fastened with snaps or Velcro.
Doublers
Doublers are thick pads that can be inserted between your baby's bottom and the diaper to provide extra absorbency.
These are great for heavy wetters or for night
night-time use.
Liners
Liners are thin material used between a baby's bottom and the
diaper itself. Most liners are used to keep stool away from diapers
for easy clean up. Flushable

popular. Polar fleece liners are also available. They help to wick
moisture away and keep the baby's bottom dry.
Snappi
A plastic fastener used instead of a pin to keep the fabric inner layer
together.
“One-Size” versus Fitted (S / M / L)
A one-size
size diaper folds and/or snaps down to adjust the size so you can use the same diaper from newborn to toddler.
Alternatively, some diapers come in a variety of sizes, such as small, medium, and large. One

covers fit better that the one-size.

Prefolds / Flats
Flat diapers are simply a piece of fabric that gets folded to fit inside a cover. Prefold diapers are a variation of the
traditional flat diaper. They are a rectangular fabric square that has more layers in the middle and fewer layers at the
sides. You fold the rectangle to fit the size, gender, and elimination habits of your child. You then place a waterproof
outer cover over top. You can use pins or a Snappi to hold the inserts in place. Some covers require a separate closure
to hold them on, others use Velcro or snaps sewn in to the cover.
Prefold diapers

doublers and pocket stuffers in other diapering systems (see Doublers and Pocket Diaper sections).

All-in-Ones (AIO)
All-in-Ones (AIO) are fitted diapers that have the absorbent inner layer and waterproof outer layer sewn together.
There are no additional covers or fasteners.
AIOs are very convenient in that you don’t need to put diapers together in advance, search for covers, or struggle with
putting multiple layers on a squirmy baby. Everything you need is all in one place. They’re great for grandparents who
aren’t familiar with the other multiple-part systems and save space when traveling.
Advantages of AIO Cloth Diapers

All-in-Twos (AI2)
In All-in-Twos the absorbent inner layer and waterproof outer layer are separate, however you attach them together to
make a single diaper before putting the diaper on the baby (as opposed to other styles where the cover is applied after
the absorbent is put on the baby).
AI2s have the convenience of AIOs in that they are simple to put on, but they don’t have the longer drying and cleaning
times of AIOs. You can also often replace only the inner soaker layer in a diaper change and reuse the outer cover,
extending the life of the cover with less frequent washing.

Putting a single item on the baby makes it less intimidating for new cloth users
Similar to putting on and taking off a disposable, therefore great for transitioning from disposables to cloth

Hybrid
Hybrid diapers combine the convenience of disposable diapers with some of the re-usable nature of cloth diapers. A
Hybrid diapering system is an All-in-Two reusable cover with a disposable rather than cloth inner liner. Depending on
the brand, the inner layer can be thrown out, flushed, or composted in your backyard composter.
Hybrids are a more environmentally-conscious solution for people who do not want to cloth diaper. They cut down on
the amount of plastic being sent to the landfill, as the outer reusable cover replaces the plastic outer found in a regular
disposable diaper. Hybrid diaper inners often have unbleached wood pulp liners, so they reduce baby’s exposure to
chemicals found in traditional disposable diapers, and reduce the amount of chemicals put in to the environment.
Many people use a combination of All-in-Twos and disposable inserts, generally using the cloth inners at home and the
disposable inners when out of the house.

Pocket Diapers
Most pocket diapers have a waterproof out layer with an opening (pocket) on the inside that allows for the insertion of
an absorbent inner layer (stuffer). Traditionally the stuffer is a separate piece (or pieces) of fabric, however some
pocket diapers now have the stuffer attached to the outer.
Pocket diapers similar to AI2s in that they are convenient to put on and easy to clean and dry.

Fitted Cloth Diapers
Fitted cloth diapers are made to fit the shape of the baby. They are not waterproof by themselves and a diaper cover
must be put on over top. They usually have elastic in the legs and waist that help to contain the contents of the diaper.
They also have snaps or Velcro closures to keep them in place, making the cover easier to put on than with a prefold.
Advantages of Fitted Diapers
• Snug fit on baby avoids shifting and leaks around legs
• Can be washed separately from covers
• Stays put on baby as cover is being applied
Disadvantages of Fitted Diapers
• Need to put on in two steps
• Not as convenient to put on as other styles
• Can be harder to wash and take longer to dry because of all of the layers
