Friday 02. August • Lighthouse Thame 2013 • www.lighthousethame.org.uk • 01844 390930 Birthdays today Sophie Smith (13) Lampligther in 4’s Snappy Sharks Lighthouse Thame is over for another year! It’s been again a great year with 904 children registered and 400 voluntary helpers, busy Parents & Toddlers, Parents Café and Silver Lighthouse, all having a great week! Congratulations from all at Lighthouse! Donations We hope your children have had a wonderful time! Although there is no charge for attendance, over £45,000 will be required to run the 2013 event. Local churches contribute towards the cost and we rely on donations to meet the remaining costs of £10/child per day. If you are able, please make donations in the post box near the Administration tent. Please use the provided envelopes so we can reclaim the Gift Aid. After the event please post you donations to This year saw a new chairperson take over at Lighthouse Thame, our Lighthouse roving reporter caught up with him to find out how it was all going. LH Martin, the role of chairperson at Lighthouse Thame is a big undertaking, when did you decide to take it on, and why? MG I have been involved with Lighthouse here right from the start, I was originally an Age Group Leader and then got more involved with the technical side of things, including the website and the associated admin, so I had a good idea what was involved. I was first asked to take on the role around 18 months ago, I took a couple of weeks to think about it, and discuss it with my family, but it felt like the right thing to do, it felt like something I was called to do. LH So what does your average day here involve? Cheques should be made payable to ‘Lighthouse Thame’. MG No 2 days are the same. I am here from 7am until gone 10pm each day, though I do pop home for half an hour for something to eat. My day involves everything from accompanying new children onto site, to help sort out admin issues, to working as part of the site team. It's been busier than I thought it would be. LH What has been your favourite part of your role? Thank you! MG At the church, where my whole The Treasurer 16 Stoke’s End, Haddenham , HP17 8DX. family go, we recently baptised a girl who had first learned about Jesus at Lighthouse last year. It reminds me that everything I do here is a great chance to share the love of Jesus with our whole community in a very real way, and that's the best bit about it all to me. LH And what's been your worst bit? MG On Monday one of the small tents blew away, it knocked straight into the fence at the back of the site, and set off a 'domino effect' as the fence fell over section by section. It caused a lot of work, and at the end we had to try and get the tent back up too. I can see the funny side of it now though. LH During your time at Lighthouse how often have you been in the gunge tank? MG I've never been in the gunge tank LH..... LH yet! The feedback from parents and kids alike has been massively positive, and the wider local community has been very supportive. We will be starting planning for Lighthouse 2014 from September. Please, let us have any feedback from you or your kids, including any ideas to make things even better next year – emailing the Chairman Martin Gibson email: [email protected] Otherwise, we look forward to seeing you next year! Parents ponderings… The Kiss…………... What you believe in is really important.! In my early teens I went to a youth club disco with the firm belief that that night would be the night when I would get my first kiss. What had I based this belief on? Well it was rock solid: A friend of a friend of the girl’s sister had told my friend that if I asked this girl (Emily) for a kiss she would be very willing to give it. At the disco I waited for my moment. I nearly waited too l o n g ! T h e D J su d de n l y announced it was the last song! Encouraged by my mates I slithered across the dance floor and put my hands on Emily’s shoulders. “Um… Kiss?” I said like a caveman speaking for the first time. “NO way!!! You’re gross!” Emily said slapping me on the kisser. You see belief is important but what it’s placed in matters more. I was sincere in my belief, it even made me a better person for a while (I’d showered AND used my Dad’s Brut spray for the dance), but ultimately it didn’t get me anywhere. Believing in Jesus has a good foundation: He taught with authority like no one before or since. His actions; raising the dead, healing a paralysed man and claiming to forgive sin make his claim to be God credible. Today’s story helps us see why he came. He asked Zacchaeus, a crooked rich tax collector who everyone thought was pretty gross, to follow him. Zacchaeus went on to discover that there was more to life than he had thought. He found that putting his trust in Jesus gave him forgiveness, purpose, transformation and joy, life like that is what God wants for us. Jesus makes the same invitation to you. Whatever your past or your situation He invites you to follow him to live life with him. Don’t let your kids have all the fun… Go along to one of the local churches and find out how all this good stuff is available to you too. Worst case, you’ll get a decent cup of tea. Best case you might find something way better than your first kiss! Daily ‘parents ponderings’ written by the Lighthouse team, unpack the daily theme to parents, explaining what their child has been learning about and giving parents something to ponder too.
