Wednesday, May 4, 2011 Edition #37 Cathedral High School Vision Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution, will be the model for all high schools as she profoundly shapes the way students think, serve and lead. Dear Cathedral Parents, Cathedral High School Mission Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school, provides to a diverse group of students opportunities for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth through service and academic excellence. A Prezi is a new method of communication, similar to a PowerPoint, but with much more flexibility. This is the Prezi showing our steps towards re-affiliation with the Brothers of Holy Cross. https://prezi.com/secure/0f5f25bc290b3d18789caadd9d13e2b9458365c0/ We sent invitations for the Honors Awards Program on this Sunday, May 8th digitally this year. However, I am receiving calls from people who think their child should be honored who have not received invitations. Therefore, I am printing the names of all students to be honored during this program beginning on page 5 of this parent email. I also sent an email invitation to each student to be honored this morning. If you have questions, please ask your child to check his or her email. If you have further questions, please contact my administrative assistant, Sister Lynne Matteson at 317/968-7337 or email me at [email protected]. (Remember, do not just hit “reply,” or I will not get the email in a timely manner.) If your student is on this list, I ask that you arrive by about 4:45 p.m. and that students are dressed using Christian modesty (girls: no spaghetti straps, nor very tight nor short skirts, have shoes that will let them negotiate steps easily; boys: dress slacks, dress shirt, no shorts nor jeans). For the families of incoming freshman (Class of 2015), please note that all new information is printed in red; older information is printed in black. Parents, please note that we have added a PLC schedule for tomorrow, Thursday, May 5th, so we can meet and greet our Holy Cross Visitation Team. School will begin at 8:05 a.m. tomorrow morning. His project was at St. Anthony Church, where he built boxes around the statues and crucifixes in the school. The school is now a public charter school, but is still owned by the church. In order for the religious items to remain in the school and be available for religious education on the weekends, they needed to be covered and locked during the school week. Harrison designed the boxes, obtained donations from a lumber company, and directed his fellow scouts in building and installing the cabinets and locks. Great job, Harrison! 4 On April 6, 2011 Cathedral participated in an Engineering Expo competition at Purdue University. There were seven students that volunteered to compete from Mr. Seal‘s Honors Physics class. They were split into two teams with Numbers 47 & 48. Team 47 consisted of Michael Liotti, Connor Ruleman, Lauren Tolley, and Elizabeth Witchger (no picture available). Team 48 included Steve Berlage, Chris Neuffer (no picture available), Zach Vander Missen. The results below has team 48 winning and team 47 doing better than the average, please give all member some praise next time you see them! Hopefully we will win again next year since all but Michael were juniors and some of them are signed up for ACP Physics next year. ACP Physics is a course offered at Cathedral for Dual Credit with IU Bloomington. Next year is the first year we plan to offer it at Cathedral, feel free to contact Mr. Seal or IUB website, http://acp.indiana.edu/ for more information. Our guests are: Dr. Mary Anne Beiting, Principal of Hoban High School in Akron, OH Brother Robert Lavelle, C.S.C., Headmaster of Gilmour Academy near Cleveland, OH Mr. Brian Horgan, Head of Upper School at Gilmour Academy near Cleveland, OH Brother Ken Haders, C.S.C., President of Hoban High School in Akron, OH. On Monday, May 2nd Stephanie Israel (’11) introduced the morning Pledge to the Flag and then led us as we recited it with her. Stephanie is headed to West Point for next year. I want to share her introduction to the Pledge to the Flag with you. ―My fellow classmates and Americans, as some of you may already know, President Obama announced late last night that Usama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces in Pakistan. This marks the end of the worldwide manhunt that began nearly a decade ago. His death is the result of years of intelligence gathering and is the most significant achievement to date in our nation‘s effort to defeat Al Qaeda. So this morning I am asking a favor from all of you – I am asking that when you say the pledge, you say the words with vivacity and feeling. Say it for the 5,000 service men and women who have lost their lives in the Iraq and Afghanistan war. Say it loud and proud, so loud in fact, that I will be able to hear you all the way down here in the administration hallway. And now for the pledge: I pledge allegiance to the flag, of the United States of America, and to the republic, for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty, justice for all. Thank you and have a great day.‖ May God bless the USA! ~~~~~ Help a Cathedral Family? As many of you know, P.J. Kervan recently suffered a massive heart attach. He is stable for now, but his future is in question. PJ has been out of work for the first time in his life for the past six months. Money was tight while he was working with 4 kids in private school, now it is non-existent. Some friends are having a benefit for PJ this Saturday, so if you can help this Cathedral family, it will be much appreciated. Please use this link to get more information about the benefit for PJ: http://www.cathedral-irish.org/cf_news/view.cfm?newsid=1996 PARENTS WE NEED YOU… CHS Mothers' Club in collaboration with Habitat for Humanities is coordinating the food for underclass FINALS' week. All students enrolled in English 10 and Biology 1 will take the ECAs for those courses. Students enrolled in Algebra will take the ECA if they have not already received a passing score on the exam. Students who need to retest in Algebra I and English 10 will also be testing this week. For the graduating class of 2012 and beyond, the ECA takes the place of the ISTEP+/GQE as a graduation requirement. All students in the class of 2012 and beyond must pass the ECAs for Algebra I and English 10. At this time Biology 1 is on a take only basis, which means it does not need to be made-up if not passed at this time. Questions? Please contact Mrs. Taria Butler in our Guidance Office or at [email protected] or at 317/968-7369. ~~~~~ 12 New Project: Used Uniform Clothing Sale The Mother‘s Club is beginning a Used Uniform Clothing Sale to aid some of our students. It will be held as part of the used book sale on May 26th and 27th. If your child has uniform shirts, pants, or sweatshirts that you will not be using again and are gently used, please drop them off with Mr. Greer before the final exams. These can be a big help to families of other students in the future. Questions? Please call Marci Taylor at 416-8261. Hey Seniors! ―No more school, No more books…‖ Now what to do with your uniforms? We‘ve got a solution: Let your underclassmen and women use them. If you‘ve got gently used uniforms (no frayed pants or shirts with stains) you can drop them off in a box at the front office to be resold during the used book sale. Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen, don‘t feel left out!! You too can turn in uniforms that no longer fit you for others to purchase. Used Uniforms will be sold Thursday May 26th and Friday May 27th in the cafeteria in conjunction with the used book sale. ~~~~~ STUDENT / ATHLETE PARTICIPATION Effective immediately, advocated by Methodist Sports Medicine/IU Health, the sports medicine provider for Cathedral Athletics, we will be adopting a new policy with regard to the timing of the completion/on file in Athletic Office of the IHSAA Preparticipation Physical Evaluation (annually) and HIPAA (one time for four years) forms. The attached document outlines the new policy. Summary: Before any CHS student/athlete can participate in any preseason conditioning session, weight training, tryouts or any physical activity associated with Cathedral Athletics, they must have both forms on file with Maureen Sullivan in the Athletic Office. For the safety of the athlete and to help relieve personal liability, coaches should not allow any athlete to participate in any physical activity associated with their sport at any time. The basic premise behind the “moving up” of the timing of this process is it just makes sense to have the kids medically checked out BEFORE they begin any strenuous physical activity associated with sports at Cathedral High School and not wait until the beginning of the actual designated season. It also allows for some lead time, if a previously unknown/undiagnosed medical condition does exist, to help eliminate the risk of physical participation and begin the course of treatment for the condition, to get them ‗back playing‘ as soon as possible. REQUIRED ATHLETIC MEDICAL PHYSICALS Any Cathedral High School student/athlete, who wishes to participate in any preseason, summer conditioning/weights/camps or authorized practices for any sport MUST have a completed an annual IHSAA Preparticipation Physical Evaluation Form and a HIPAA Form (one time for four years) on file in the Athletic Office (Mrs. Maureen Sullivan) before being eligible to participate. Physicals for the 2011-2012 school year (including summer) must be completed after May 1, 2011. All Cathedral High School student/athletes, who will be trying out for any sport, MUST have the following forms: IHSAA Physical Form HIPAA Form These forms are available in the CHS Athletic Office or on the school website (www.cathedral-irish.org) under ―ATHLETICS‖ and drop-down entitled ‗Forms‘. 13 (Transfer students to Cathedral, who intend on participating in an IHSAA sanctioned sport, must file an IHSAA ATHLETIC TRANSFER REPORT, to apply for eligibility to participate in an IHSAA sanctioned athletic contest. Forms are available from Mr. Jim McLinn, Director of Athletics, in the Athletic Office.) Once student/athletes have turned in all forms, they will be permitted to participate in all athletic conditioning activities. Coaches may not allow a student to participate before all forms are on file in the Athletic Office. ~~~~~ Indiana University to host free e-waste recycling events Events to be held in the Bloomington, South Bend, and Indianapolis communities Indiana University will host its third annual Electronic Waste Collection Days, providing free e-waste recycling for schools, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and the general public. I was ill and you came to see me.” Our service works also helps us to live in the light of God. As shared by John 3:21, ―Whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.‖ As the people of God, we become more centered in his being through our actions of service and compassion. Class Service Projects We share the united gift of empathy and love with our brothers and sisters through our specific Cathedral projects. Another USO trip is planned for Saturday, May 7 to Camp Atterbury. On Wednesday, May 11, our sophomores will cook and serve a spaghetti dinner at Anna‘s House for the local families who are being supported in their ESL classes and other development in their community. On May 14, we will serve lunch at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen. These May projects are on-going expressions of ministry and giving. Details on all of these class service projects are noted below in Service Opportunities. Service Dinner On May 3, we gathered to celebrate and affirm wonderful service accomplished by so many Cathedral students during this past year. Accolades were shared for their grant writing successes with United Way (more than $6,000 this year) and community service actions. These achievements, either in Indianapolis or around the globe, have been accomplished in their work through organizations such as the Catholic Charities Christmas Store, the Lord‘s Pantry, the Cathedral Soup Kitchen, Mentoring Magic and Make It Mine reading projects with IPS schools, the USO, the Timmy Foundation, and Invisible Children. Cathedral alum Eric Saunders, ‘01, from the Big Brothers Big Sisters agency spoke to our audience with compelling conviction about the opportunity that we all have to address the chains of poverty, inequity, disease and isolation that grip our community. We are called to be strong servant leaders. Service Hours on Power School Service hours may be viewed on Power School and are current for all hours received since the start of school. Service Reflection They say it takes a minute to serve a special person, An hour to appreciate them, A day to love them, But then an entire life to forget them. May your Cathedral service personally enrich you and your spirituality, as we seek to address challenges faced by our brothers and sisters in our immediate community and world-wide. Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 20010-11were due on March 1, 2011. Seniors graduation hours for the academic year of 2010-2011 were due on December 1, 2010. Click here for the 2010-11 Service Documentation. Click here for the 2009-10 Service Documentation form. Click here for the Service Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance. Please check the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not accepted as service hours. We always encourage our students to help their families and neighbors but we do not accept these efforts as service hours. We seek to perform our service in the spirit of Matthew 25:35-36. College Information: We mentioned to you in August the Senior Survey where you record any merit scholarships you were offered and list your college of attendance. This information is used for the graduation program and other Cathedral publications. It is now available for you in your senior mailboxes, a copy is attached here as well, and it is on the CHS website as well. Completing the survey is REQUIRED. If we don‘t get a survey your information cannot be included in the graduation program. We realize that some of you have not made your decisions yet or heard back on all scholarships. This is to get you started and give those who do know their decisions to get this completed. We will ask that all surveys are turned in to your college advisor by April 15th. This gives us time to organize the information and get it to the printer. Thanks in advance for your cooperation, and please see your college advisor if you have any questions. Here is the survey: http://www.cathedral-irish.org/upload...lty/kpivonka//Senior_Survey_2011.docx If your son or daughter is interested in a summer internship or college experience, please visit the Guidance page of the Cathedral website. Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (5-2-11) - Property of Billy Shepherd Sports Inc. and presented by the NFHS Are you the student-athlete that follows up on a commitment that you have made to your parents, teachers, coaches, or teammates? It is somewhat discouraging to those in charge when someone accepts the challenge of doing something and then they don't follow through. If you commit to doing something, make sure you see it through. Most teachers and coaches will tell you that they look at the effort just as much as they look at the result. So if there's a project in the classroom, or new play to learn in your team sport, follow through and do you part. That's the least you can do! For more on the student-athlete go to www.askbillyshep.com and www.nfhs.org. ~~~~~ Smart Quote: One who knows others is wise. One who knows himself is enlightened. Meditation: John 3:16-21 ” Light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light.” (John 3:19) At first, the light was just too bright for Nicodemus. When we first meet him in John‘s Gospel, he is coming to Jesus ―at night‖ to do a little private investigation. A Pharisee, Nicodemus was intrigued by Jesus, but he was also reluctant to associate himself publicly with this teacher from Galilee. Jesus, ―the light,‖ had come into the world, but Nicodemus wasn‘t ready yet to come into that light. We can only guess why. Maybe he was afraid of change. Maybe he was concerned about the reaction from some of his fellow Pharisees. But slowly and steadily, this respected teacher of the Jews let the light dawn. When some of Israel‘s leaders wanted to have Jesus arrested, Nicodemus openly defended him (John 7:50-51). And after Jesus was crucified, Nicodemus bravely stepped forward, bringing costly spices to help prepare Jesus‘ body for burial. He was coming into the light! The Holy Spirit was working in his heart, freeing him from fear. Nicodemus shows us that it‘s never too late to come to the Lord. Sometimes we may be hesitant to step into his light, especially if it means confessing our sins. Sometimes we feel more comfortable approaching Jesus during the ―night‖ with a guarded heart. And that‘s okay, so long as we keep taking steps closer to the light, even small steps. After all, that‘s how Nicodemus began, and look how his story ended. He had the privilege of ministering to the broken body of Christ—the body that would be raised to glory three days later! So take courage, and try to come a little more fully into the light of Christ. You don‘t have to carry around shame over past sins. All you have to do is take them to Jesus and ask him to set you free. Let the light of his mercy melt away your guilt and fill you with joy and peace instead. Let him show you the freedom that he won for you on the cross. It may take a while, like Nicodemus, but we can all become a new creation this Easter season! “Thank you, Jesus, for shining the light of your truth and love into my life. Thank you for the gift of your freedom.” Blessings, Principal Cathedral High School [email protected] 33
