Volume 70 • No. 1 • Winter 2013 2013 Distinguished Alumna Nominees In 2013, the Little Flower Class of 1963 will celebrate its 50th Anniversary! I am proud to be a member of that class. Of course, when I was in high school, I thought that anyone who was out of high school 20 years was "over the hill". Fifty years was almost unthinkable ...nonetheless, here. I am, busy and active, thinking about Kathleen Murphy how Little Flower and the people I encountered influenced my life. McGrath ’63 I started Little Flower in September 1959. As I look back, life was very good for many of us, and I was truly blessed. I had a warm, loving and fun family, came from a parish, Holy Innocents, that cared about its parishioners, had fine friends and was very anxious to begin high school. More than anything else, I wanted to play varsity basketball and do well in school. I quickly became absorbed in school work and anticipated basketball tryouts. The people, both teachers and classmates, I encountered helped to shape my values and my sense of the world. Little Flower certainly influenced me in every aspect of my life. During my years at Little Flower, I had many wonderful teachers who certainly influenced me more than I ever realized at the time. Since the IHM Sisters were involved in activities, they were ever present, both in the classroom and the gym. The religious Sisters who taught me were wonderful women, filled with life and goodness. Sister Jane Margaret, SSJ, and Sister Thomas Michael, IHM, were the best teachers I ever had. Sister Ursula Marie, IHM, was the Moderator of the basketball team, and along with Sister Jamesine Marie, Moderator of the cheerleaders, encouraged us to work hard and enjoy our time playing basketball. I was so definitely influenced by these women that after graduation I entered the convent and spent six years in the IHM Community. I met many fine young women at Little Flower and made many friendships. I thought that each of them was as fortunate as I and never realized until much later in life that some of them, although seemingly cheerful and happy, had difficult life circumstances. As the years have passed, I have often recalled How did your education at Little Flower influence your life? My desire was to attend Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls; my parents had suggested other high schools, but I only wanted to attend LF. I loved attending Little Flower, I enjoyed going to school with my friends from Holy Innocents. I enjoyed being in High School with my cousins and friends Colleen Kane from Ascension Parish, too. Whisler ’77 Since LF was an all-girls high school; I loved that the girls were in charge of everything. The girls were the leaders of the Student Council, captains of the athletic teams, editors of the newspaper and yearbook, the mascot—I remember thinking, this is great. Here at LF, GIRLS can do anything and everything. At Little Flower I did not always do my best or excel in my academic studies. I was social. But as I have reflected on my life over the years I wish I would have tried harder in high school. However, once I entered college, I decided to do my best and my mantra in college became “Try and do my best each day”. In Little Flower I took business courses and prepared for the working world. My mom told me that I needed to learn to type and write in order to succeed. When I think of my mom’s advice, knowing how to type and write a business letter has been an asset in my life. What would you tell today’s students they should take with them when they leave Little Flower? When you leave LF take with you the things that will bring you happiness and success – Honesty, Integrity, Work Ethic, Belief in yourself (that ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE), and Your Faith (prayers). As you move into your future start to “Think from the end”. Envision yourself in your future roles: career, wife, mother or all three; envision yourself successful and happy in these roles. Start to create the path to help you achieve your vision. Pray to St. Therese daily for guidance—she will not fail you on this path called LIFE!! (Continued on page 4) (Continued on page 4) FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK . . . Dear Alumnae and Friends! May God bless 2013 with much happiness and good health during this “Year of Faith.” Since we returned to school on September 5, we’ve experienced a lot of “meeting and greeting”—the Classes of 1952, 1962, and 1987 returned for Installation on September 25; we welcomed the families and friends of our deceased Alumnae on Sister Donna Shallo, November 7; I met with our AlumI.H.M., LF President nae in Northern Virginia, North Carolina, Delaware, and Ann’s Choice. In addition, I attended the Christmas Luncheons of the Philadelphia and Cape May County Alumnae Chapters. Truly, it is always a delight to spend time with our Alumnae and friends and see you interact with each other. The “All Class Reunion at Ann’s Choice” was very successful. For that reason, I would like you to know that we are open to having gatherings in other areas as well. We just need a contact person living at the “Over 55 Residence” to help us make the arrangements for a weekday luncheon. I look forward to hearing from you… Sister Kathleen Klarich, RSM, our principal, recently invited the students to participate in a survey—asking them their input on various school topics. One question was to name the strengths of Little Flower. I was so happy to hear that our students named our Alumnae as one of our strengths. They “get it” and recognize that YOU are the reason they are able to receive a Little Flower education!! At this time, I would like to express our DEEP GRATITUDE to the 3,129 Alumnae and friends who sent us their Annual Fund donation by December 31. We gratefully received $510,000 by that date (this does not include the $85,000 we received for the Capital Campaign) and 1,200 increased their donation from last year. Save the Date Cape May County Chapter Spring Fling April 24 & 25, 2013 Seaville Tavern on Rte. 50, Seaville, NJ For information contact Betty or Peggy at 609-465-3838 Page 2 / Winter 2013 Thank you for caring about Little Flower; your love and loyal support ARE making a difference. As a result: We are assisting over 400 students with tuition grants; you are sustaining ALL of our spiritual, academic, and athletic programs; a new MAC computer lab was purchased partially from PA taxpayers’ money and the rest from your donations; in December we purchased iPads for the teachers and I asked the Alumnae from the ’80’s, ’90’s, and ’2000’s who have not been financially connected with the school to send us $25 to “pay down” that bill. Thus far, over $2,000 has been gratefully received since early December. Of course, we have thousands of dollars to go but you still have time as our fiscal year ends on June 30. This is a reminder to our 13,000 Alumnae who are not in the practice of sending in donations: Little Flower needs your financial support—NOW—THIS is the time to help us! We accomplish a great deal with the financial assistance of 7,000 Alumnae and friends—Just imagine all we could do if we had your support... January 29 is Alumnae Appreciation Day and the 7:20 a.m. Mass will be celebrated for the intentions of our Alumnae. Thank you and God bless you! Know that you are in my daily prayers… Fondly, Sister Donna Shallo, IHM President MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE REGIONAL REUNIONS Invitations will be sent to you. Dear Alumnae and Friends: Can you believe that the Advent and Christmas Seasons have already come and gone? Days are getting longer! Before we know it Lent, Easter and Springtime will be here! I sure hope this edition of the Sequel finds you and your family enjoying good health and many blessings in 2013. God continues to bless Little Flower in so many, many ways – esSister Joan M. Ames, IHM pecially YOU, our alumnae and Director of Advancement friends. This time last year we were all on an emotional HIGH generated by the announcement that LF would remain open. We at Little Flower are still on that high. But we need your prayers and financial support to sustain our mission – providing an LF education for any girl who desires it. Your support and generosity to Little Flower helps award tuition assistance to our present Little Flower students, and future LF students – no amount is too small. A sincere thank you to the girls from the classes of ’42, ’57, ’62, ’72, ’87, ’92, ’97, ’02 and ’07, who generously gave their time and energy to organize their Class Reunions. Job well done, girls! If you feel inclined to chair or co- t Check ou chair your reunion, please contact me at [email protected] or call me at 215-455-6900 ext. 118. If you live in or plan to visit Florida, California, Arizona or Texas, Regional Reunions are planned for February, March and April. As details become available, they will be posted on the Alumnae page of Little Flower’s website: www.littleflowerhighschool.org During the month of March, we engage in our Annual Phona-thon, which last year generated over $90,000. We really can use your help to make this venture even more successful. Many alumnae really look forward to hearing the voice of another alum. Please consider coming to Little Flower for an evening (or two) to make phone calls. It really is a rewarding experience. Winter 2013 / Page 3 2013 Distinguished Alumna Nominees (continued) Kathleen Murphy McGrath that we were all treated with respect, regardless of our life's circumstances. For all of us, Little Flower was a safe haven and a place to achieve our potential. The influence of Little Flower and what I learned almost unconsciously has permeated my life. One of the most significant days for me at Little Flower was the first day of school in Sophomore year. I learned through a general announcement that my close friend, neighbor, and classmate, Yvonne Catena, had died suddenly. Yvonne and I lived nine houses apart in our row houses on Luzerne Street in Juniata Park. Yvonne had been in Wildwood for the summer and I was in Sea Isle City. We both came home from the shore the day before school opened. She had not been sick, but died suddenly from a brain aneurysm. I remember the sense of shock, disbelief and loss I felt as I listened to that announcement on the PA system. I clearly remember the understanding and concern shown to me at Little Flower that day. That event stands out in my mind as one I will never forget. On a much brighter side, and of great significance to me was the fact that in my Junior year, we won the Catholic League Basketball Championship. That was the best moment for me at Little Flower. Not only did we have a great team, but we had wonderful people surrounding us. My homeroom teacher in Junior year was Sister Anne Elizabeth, SSND. She was an art teacher and a great artist. Each week after our victory, she would make a banner celebrating our win. Those banners hanging in the main corridor encouraged us to keep working and playing hard. After I left the IHM Sisters in 1969, I continued to work as a teacher in diocesan high schools. My first job was at St. Hubert's in September 1970. I can remember being shocked that the students were permitted to wear makeup! I married Joe McGrath in November 1970. We have been blessed through 42 years of marriage with three wonderful daughters and six grandchildren. We have five grandsons and one granddaughter, who are the joy of our lives. My years at Little Flower coursed me to be positive and confident. I would tell today's students to take the love, warmth, faith and security that they experience at Little Flower with them wherever they go. Share that love, warmth, faith and sense of security with all they encounter. Colleen Kane Whisler What was your most significant experience as a student? My most significant experience as a student was when I went to see a counselor at LF. She advised me not to go to college, but to take a job in the business world. She knew that both my brothers were in North Catholic and I should help my mom and dad financially. I did not share her advice to me with anyone. Instead of asking questions I just did as she advised (I should have confided in my parents or my teachers at Little Flower). I took a job at an insurance company in center city, as a clerk in the Claims Department. My mom noticed that I was quiet and not myself. When she asked me what was wrong, I opened up to my mom and told her that I was unhappy. My mom asked me what I wanted to do with my life? I explained that I wanted to be a teacher. My mom said, “Then you’ll be a teacher”. My mom put a plan into action. We went to my mom’s friend’s house; he was a teacher and an assistant principal in the Philadelphia Public School System. We spoke to him and he helped guide me in the right direction. I went to college the year after graduating from LF. It was not an easy path. I attended Community College and then graduated from Temple University. I taught three years at St. Leo’s Parish School in Tacony; then went on to teach in the Philadelphia Public School system. I taught for nine years at Duckrey Elementary School in Philadelphia. I went back to college and earned my Master’s degree from St. Joseph University. I also received my Elementary Principal’s Certificate. I spent five years as principal of Reynolds Elementary School, then eleven years as principal of Moore Elementary School. I am now principal of Faust Elementary School in Bensalem, PA. I am proud to say I have been in education for a long time. My advice “Become what you dream!!!” Who was your role model/mentor at Little Flower and why? I had three role models/mentors at Little Flower; the first was Msgr. Bennett, our principal. As a student council representative Father allowed me and my peers to have student voice. Page 4 / Winter 2013 He allowed us to give our side of the story or share our positions on political or controversial issues at school or in society in general. (I found this to be exciting and rewarding to have voice) Father taught me a simple lesson – you can agree to disagree with people. This is wonderful skill that I still find of value in my life today. My second role model was Mrs. Joanne Walls, the Student Council moderator. She also allowed us to have voice, but reminded us that we had to be leaders and ladies at the same time. She was a strong leader and an admired teacher at Little Flower. I admired that she was courageous and fair and demanded excellence at all times. My third role model and mentor was and still is St. Theresa. My aunt, Sister Rosemarie Lafferty, SSJ, introduced me to St. Theresa. St. Theresa is a calm and simple force in my life. She’s helped me in big ways and little ways daily. I remember going to LF’s chapel and praying and just turning my worries and fears over to St. Theresa. “Little Flower at this hour show your power!!!” How involved are you in the Alumnae Association? I have been involved in most of my class reunions as either a co-chairperson, or committee member over the years. My Little Flower friends and I attend Summerfest each summer in North Wildwood. What instilled the most confidence in you to become the person you are today? My confidence was instilled in me by my beautiful mother and wonderful father since the day I was born. My parents told me; “Anything worth having or worth doing well – will be a lot of work and will not be easy.” They both reassured me that as long as you try your best; are good to your family and friends; and that you are honest – you will then be a success. My father would often say, “To whom much is given much is expected. I am humbled that I was nominated for this award; my family, friends and LF family have been a wonderful influence in my life. I consider myself to be blessed to be an alumna of Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls. OFFICE OF PLANNED GIVING PERPETUATING LITTLE FLOWER LEGACY Happy New Year! We are very grateful to our Alumnae who have informed us that they have remembered Little Flower in their final estate plans. Our Little Flower Legacy Mass and Brunch will be on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, so please mark your calendars. You will receive an invitation. I hope we will have some new members to welcome! Our newest members are: Katherine Clover Bonowski ’51 Anne McGuckin DeVece ’51 Cathleen Hynes Pfeiffer ’62 Anne Francis Krolikowski ’66 Just as a gentle reminder to those who have not yet gotten around to stating their final intentions—if you do not have a will, EVERYTHING you possess will be distributed according to state law. This means your personal and fondest wishes may not be carried out because you did not establish a will. A state established will disregards the individual interest and intentions of the deceased. Distribution of property—even treasured possessions is decided by total strangers. Naturally, I certainly encourage our readers to keep in mind the needs of Little Flower AFTER you have provided for your family. Many individuals have found a unique way to make their will and testament reflect their faith. They ask their attorney to precede their will with a special statement such as the following: Knowing that I will one day be called to return to God from Whom I came, I now publicly give thanks for all the gifts God has given me: my life, my family, my work, my friends, and all my earthly possessions. I am particularly grateful for my Catholic faith which has sustained me and taught me to cherish, nurture, and share these gifts. I assure those whom I must leave behind of my continuing love and, in order to discharge my responsibilities as a faithful steward, I give these instructions for the distribution of the goods God has given to my care.” Please inform us if you have provided for Little Flower in your will. We like to thank you for your love, loyalty and vision NOW… God bless you! Sister Donna Shallo, IHM President Little Flower Legacy Society The Little Flower Legacy Society membership includes our cherished alumnae and friends who, as loyal visionaries and generous benefactors, have included Little Flower in their Will or estate plan. Through their Planned Gift, they have committed to securing the mission and the legacy of Little Flower into the future. *Anne Francis Krolikowski ’66 Margaret Short McParland ’53 Mary Ann Keegan ’41 Patricia Palka Ward ’66 Mary Ellen Dailey Parkins ’53 Kathryn G. Winter 2013 / Page 7 ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION NEWS . . . Dear Alumnae: Greetings and Happy New Year Now that the holidays are over we reflect on the past, present and future. The past is ancient history, but if you are like me, has lots of wonderful memories and once in a while we have to bring them out and dwell on them. The present – is in the making! The future will take care of itself; all we have to do is plan so we will not be Dolly Ellis Brophy needy. ’59 When thinking of my past – I remember all the wonderful friends I have had and, in most cases, still have. Friends from grammar school, friends from Little Flower, work friends, old and new neighbors. I thank God for the gifts these friends have been to me. They have given of themselves something to be treasured. Hopefully I too have been as giving to them as they have been to me. I just read somewhere Friends are the Family we choose for ourselves. I for one have a very large and wonderful family. Memories of Little Flower and my wonderful years there, the love, friendship and learning experiences are all a major part of who I am. I would be delighted to hear some of your experiences and may be able to incorporate them into a “Memory Section” in my next letter. Please send your memories to Little Flower High School, Attn: Sister Joan Ames or to [email protected], and Sister will forward them to me. New Year’s Resolutions: in the past I have made 100’s of resolutions and probably within two weeks of New Years they have been kicked to the curb and promptly forgotten. This year I have made only one “Be Kinder.” This can encompass many things, if I see someone in need I can help, either through prayers, physical assistance or even money. I have so much to be thankful for that I need to show my thanks by being kinder. At this time of year I try to remind myself of all the wonderful things that have happened this year. I am grateful for my family, my faith, my friends and especially Little Flower. To follow through on my New Year’s resolution of being kinder I will try to do more for LF and its students. The Alumnae will be hosting events throughout the year to raise funds for LF and the students. Hopefully you will join the officers and me by participating in some or all of these events. If you are unable to do so, please pray for the success of our endeavors. Working together we will enable the LF students to continue with their education at the best all- girl’s school in the city. In this issue of the Sequel are this year’s two nominees for Distinguished Alumna. Please take the time to read their articles and to vote. Thank you in advance for your assistance. May our Patroness St. Therese continue to shower her Roses on the Little Flower community and all of you. God Bless all of you. This year, Santa Claus came a little early to Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls! On Wednesday, December 18, the teachers received iPads. In September, we are going to phase in the use of iPads in our curriculum, beginning with the Class of 2017. The teachers will receive five days of instruction on this valuable teaching tool throughout the second semester. In order to prepare the building for this new technology, we have to upgrade our infrastructure over the summer. As you know, Little Flower was very well built in 1939, and it is going to be a very labor-intensive and expensive project—$50,000. If you have connections with people who support technology projects, please let Sister Donna know. Maybe we can ask SEVERAL donors to fund this since $50,000 is a lot for ONE Foundation. Thank you!
