Cochise County citizens voted to create a community college district in 1961, and in 1962 a bond election passed to fund the construction of the Douglas Campus. Cochise College is comprised of two campuses (Douglas and Sierra Vista) and three centers (Benson, Nogales and Willcox) - all located in this land rich in history, cultural diversity and natural beauty. Cochise College's mission is "to provide accessible educational opportunities that are responsive to a diverse population and lead to constructive citizenship, meaningful careers, and lifelong learning." Our goal is to help you reach your educational goals. We aim to be a recognized leader in providing high-quality learning opportunities and to anticipate and exceed the educational and workforce training needs of the communities we serve. With this as our vision, we: • Place learning first • Create an environment and experiences that encourage students to be active members of the learning community • Make learning possible inside and outside the classroom with a myriad of activities and experiences • Extend learning to students and all members of the college community so that a feeling of collegiality abounds • Empower students, faculty and staff to create a personally meaningful learning environment Our institutional values include quality, integrity, and diversity. Left to Right: Top: Michele Ouellette, Daniel O’Meara, Rosa Ortega, Stella Martin, and Janet Martinez-Bernal. Bottom: Christine Rhodes, Martha Skinner, Rebecca Orozco, and Kathy Johnson. “It is not so much that learners acquire structures or models to understand the world, but they participate in frameworks that that have structure. Learning involves participation in a community of practice.” (Mark K. Smith, The Social/Situational Orientation to Learning) Becky Orozco’s Student Aid, Amanda Rubio, gets the sandwich boards ready for a Brown Bag Lunch Presentation. Rebecca Orozco is Director of Cochise College’s Center SW Studies. She has worked with college students over much of her career. Becky has a degree in History and is native to this area. She teaches history classes, so look for her courses in the Spring catalog! Becky Orozco’s BROWN BAG LUNCH Series The Brown Bag Lunch Series offers students, faculty and staff at CC the opportunity to learn about local and world history and cultural events. The information is interesting, fun, and each presentation counts as a cultural event for AvanZando! Ramon Garcia visited Cochise College on September 12th to discuss Voting, Elections, and to answer many student questions. During his visit he registered 17 students to vote in the November Mid-Term Elections, gave out 30 voter registration forms on student request, and gave out close to 50 mail-in requests for absentee ballots. On September 26th, Christine Rhodes, Cochise County Recorder, did a follow-up visit to Ramon’s. Her in formation was invaluable! She registered 10 more students to vote. An interesting fact that Christine brought to light is that the United States Justice Department is monitoring Cochise County voting because we do not have enough Hispanic voters registered in the county. Please help in getting our communities involved in choice making! Join the U of A Tour!!! On October 13th, AvanZando and the SGA will sponsor a field trip to Tucson to tour the UofA. Ms. Elsa Reyes from the UofA in Tucson has Tucson Meet Yourself is a festival that celebrates the diverse cultural traditions, and can be considered a tradition unto itself - a hands-on lab for students to experience academic knowledge combined with culture. James "Big Jim" Griffith, the renowned UA folklorist, started TMY 32 years ago. It is the only comprehensive folklife festival in Arizona to date. Scattered throughout the celebration are cultural performances, arranged a private tour just for CC students. We will meet with UofA counselors, financial aid representatives, and have a 1 1/2 hour walking tour of the campus. This opportunity will let students have a better idea of what choices are available at the UofA. It is important to begin to look at where and how to transfer to 4 year post-secondary colleges and universities now so that you’ll have a smooth transition later! Be sure to talk with Cochise Col- food booths, and native goods, offering an amazing array of authentically prepared food from cultures across North and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. "A folklife festival is a lot more than a simple celebration of lege Counselors with any questions, concerns or ideas about where you might like to continue your education!! The articulation committees over the years have worked very hard to make certain that YOUR degree from CC is fully transferable to Arizona colleges and universities. We also have an agreement with Western New Mexico University in Silver City, NM, so that you can transfer your studies/degrees and take off where you left off here! TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS OPPORTUNITY!!! multiculturalism; it is instead an effort to place the cultural artifacts of the ArizonaSonora region in the context of everyday life through living cultural practitioners." says Maribel Alvarez, English Professor & folklorist at the Southwest Center at The University of Arizona. TMY is similar to the folklife festival hosted by the Smithsonian every summer in Washington, D.C.’s Capital Mall. Find more info online @ http://tucsonmeetyourself.org Amber N. Ybarra Page 4 Amber N. Ybarra is an exceptional Cochise College Student who is involved in almost every student aspect of the Douglas Campus! She never fails to provide help to staff, faculty and other students. Amber has belonged to the AvanZando program for 2 years and is an asset to the program. Upon completion of her General Studies degree at Cochise College, Amber plans to transfer a 4 year post-secondary university to pursue a baccalaureate degree in secondary education. Amber’s mother, Ana Ybarra was interviewed by Rhonda Lane. According to Ana, Amber was born and raised in Scottsdale, AZ, where her mother still lives. She is the youngest child of three older brothers. Her decision to move to Douglas, AZ, came through her desire to get out of the city and experience other lifestyles than that she was raised in. Her grandfather was living alone in Douglas, and Amber grabbed the opportunity to accomplish many things: She wanted to help her grandfather and get to know him better, she wanted to live in a heavily Spanish speaking area so that she could perfect her Spanish and be close to her heritage, and she wanted to begin her studies at Cochise College gaining the advantage that this exceptional community college offers all students. Being a person who looks for opportunities through maximizing options, Amber chose to participate in the AvanZando Program - We are thankful that she did!! THANK YOU AMBER!!! Avan Zando’s FIRST STUDENTS OF THE MONTH! Mercedez Jasmin Zertuche is active in many programs and clubs at school, available to help other students, assists staff and faculty, and participates in every event that she is asked to help with. Jasmin enrolled at Cochise College because she saw the opportunity to excel, expand her academic knowledge, and to experience the cultural growth and awareness that CC Offers, according to her mother who was interviewed by Daniel O’Meara. Jasmin realized a better world through education was available right here at CC and she jumped at the chance to begin her adult career/life right at home. Born and raised in Mexico, she graduated from Douglas High School, and works in the One-Stop because she realizes the value of help to new students just starting college. When Jasmin started school in the US she knew very little English. She is now fluent in English. For that reason, Jasmin plans to transfer to Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, a college that was chosen as one of the "New Ivies" by The 2007 Kaplan/Newsweek 'How to Get Into College Guide'. Jasmin plans to pursue BA and possible MA degrees in Translation. This is not an easy subject of study, because professional translators are required to have top skills in writing, reading and speaking every language that they work with. AvanZando is proud to include Jasmin in their exceptional program - She is one of the reason that this program is becoming a national exemplary program among TRiO SSS Program!! THANK YOU JASMIN!! It is a cunning and powerful drug. We must respect Happy Hour Comedy with a Twist is thirty minutes of stand up comedy followed by thirty minutes of an impact message on alcohol abuse with comedian Bernie McGrenahan. He tackles the number one substance abuse crisis on campuses today. Whether we call it "high risk", excessive, or "binge" drinking”, the problem is claiming the lives of students across America. McGrenahan motivates and inspires students to "be responsible". His stand up comedy warms the crowd. His powerful message to follow includes the alcohol and drug related suicide of his nineteen-year-old brother, and Bernie's six-month incarceration from three DUI convictions. Alcohol-free for thirteen years, Bernie applauds the 'social norm' or majority of students who do make smart choices regarding alcohol. “Beware of the Binge” addresses all situations a student will experience in college, including peer pressure, drink specials, games and the deadly '21 shots birthday celebration '. Having lived the crisis himself, McGrenahan is well studied on the trends and facts surrounding college drinking. Friedman is a Nuclear Physicist and Astronomer who has been instrumental in the quest to understand UFOs. He has been actively involved in what is considered one of the most important investigations on the UFO phenomenon ever assembled on film. Stanton’s investigations document solid physical evidence of UFO landings, photos and videotaped evidence of UFOs from around the world. It also reveals the shocking story of the government’s “Cosmic Watergate” - a massive effort to keep UFO information from the public. Stanton T. Friedman shares details of a massive investigation that utilized the U.S. Court System in conjunction with the “Freedom of Information Act” to gain access to government and military documents, which by law should already be available to the public. Mr. Friedman interviewed some of the first people who were willing to share their encounters with UFOs and aliens - even after the government requested that reports not be made public. He investigated “The challenge for us all, as we enter the new millennium, is to recognize that while our future is in space, we are not alone. I truly hope we qualify for admission to the Cosmic Kindergarten.” ~ Stanton Friedman the amazing story of Betty and Barney Hill, the first abduction case that received international attention.
