Finding trail markers in the wilderness of Life and Faith

I grew up spending many summer vacations in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate
New York. In the late 1800’s my great grandfather built a family cabin in this wilderness area and for many years, my great Uncle Ernie spent his entire summer working
on maintaining the trails in the high peaks of this region of our nation. Uncle Ernie directed the Adirondack Trail Improvement Society (ATIS) and Uncle Ernie and a small “trail crew” of
young men, worked throughout the Spring and Summer building log bridges across swift mountain
streams and making ladders so hikers could climb up and down steep rock ledges.
The forests in this part of the country are very dense and the cliffs are very steep, so Uncle Ernie and
his trail crew made distinctive trail markers to help hikers not lose their way.
Sometimes, Uncle Ernie would invite me and my younger sister Becca to go with him to repair a trail, or
put up a trail marker. While we worked with him, Uncle Ernie would tell us stories and share wisdom
about life and the trail and the journey. He said that while we might be out in the wilderness and in unfamiliar surroundings, if we opened our eyes and paid attention we would find trail markers to keep us
on the path and to ensure that we would not be lost. He pointed to the trees in the forests, and told us
to look for, find and then follow the trail markers on the trees or even to look for, find and follow the
green sign posts with painted letters that would mark our way.
When we would come to cliffs and streams, and even parts of the mountain tops, Uncle Ernie would
show us how the trails were marked with stacks of rocks that would point us in the direction we needed
to go. I later learned that these stacks of rocks are called cairns (pronounced like the name Karen) “
Look for, find and follow the cairns, those stacks of rocks in the trail” Uncle Ernie would admonish.
“That way you won’t get lost and you will find your way.”
Over the years, I have never forgotten this life and faith lesson that Uncle Ernie taught us. And when I
have found myself in physical and spiritual wildernesses, crossing actual or metaphorical streams of life
and even during joyous “mountain top experiences”, I have found my way best through the journey,
when I have heeded Uncle Ernie’s advice. I have found my way best when I have remembered to look
for, find and follow the trail markers, or those signs, or cairns which mark the way. It has helped me
not to get lost, and it has helped me find my way back to the trail when I have inevitably become lost.

Here in the Michigan Area, as we embark on this new journey of becoming and building a brand new annual
conference, we are in the wilderness. We are charting new territory. We have not done it this way before!
We are all being invited on a new journey. Bishop Deb is calling a design team together to help us set out on
this new “hike”. The forest is dense, there are swift streams to cross, cliffs to scale and mountains to climb, but
God provides markers along the trail. Spiritual cairns that point the way, if we will open our eyes to the trail that
is set before us. God promises to help us build the needed bridges and ladders in order that we can cross the
streams, and scale the cliffs and climb the mountains before us. God calls us to step out in faith as we find our
way to the new horizons and new lands. While we hike together in this new wilderness and on this new journey,
may we look for, find and follow the cairns and other trail markers to help us find our way! May we trust in Jesus, who is surely on the trail and the journey with us, helping us not to get lost, and finding us when we do and
showing us even greater ways to be the church in the world!
Let us look for, find and follow the cairns and keep in mind the words of one of the great old hymns of the
church:
“Guide me O Thou Great Jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land, I am weak, but thou art mighty, hold me
with thy powerful hand… When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside, bear me through the
swelling current, land me safe on Canaan’s side. Songs of praises, songs of praises, I will ever give to thee. I
will ever give to thee”
In Memory of
August 9, 1943 - July 20, 2015
Sharon Mae (Czewski) Foskett, 71 of Hazel Park and formerly of Ubly, passed
away, Monday, July 20, 2015 at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.
She was born on August 9, 1943 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Robert and Mildred (Raines) Foskett.
Sharon was a 1961 graduate of Hazel Park High School. She enjoyed trucking
throughout the country. She was a resident of American House in Hazel Park for
ten years and enjoyed many outings with other residents. Sharon owned and
operated Sharon’s Upholstery, working on various items, including antique cars.
Sharon’s favorite saying was “when to came”. She enjoyed working on many
crafts, including crocheting, painting, drawing and especially stained glass.
Sharon is survived by one daughter, Kimberley Yarbrough of Ubly; one son, Kevin Koppman and his wife,
Stephanie of Warren; 7 grandchildren, Laura (Steven) Franzel, Bryan Osantowski, Eric Koppman, Lisa
(Allan) Hope, Sean Yarbrough, Erin (Patrick) Eurich, Allen Koppman; 7 great grandchildren, Trinity, Matthew, Austin, Aiden, Bentley, Charlie and Landen; two brothers, Ted Foskett and his wife, Betty of New
Mexico, William Foskett and his wife, Debra of Sterling Heights; two sisters, Carol Willey and her husband, Jack, and Sue Anderson and her husband, Ronald, all of Hazel Park; her beloved furry companion,
Frankie.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, Daniel in 1984; significant other, Thomas Czewski in 2003.
The funeral service was held on Friday, July 24 at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly, with the
Rev. Robert Srock officiating. Burial has taken place in the St. John Cemetery in Ubly.
Memorials have been requested to the Family Discretionary Fund.

Summer Fun at Hazel Park 1st
Our summer community family fun nights are continuing with an Ice Cream Social scheduled for Friday, August
28 at 7:00 PM. (Note: Earlier announcements had a different date. The new date is August 28). At the social,
we’d like to give away school supplies to kids attending to help get them ready for school. If you’d like to start
watching for sales and collecting items now, we’ll need such items as:
• Back packs
• 24 count boxes of crayons
• Spiral notebooks
• Boxes of tissues
• Wide ruled notebook paper
• 12 inch rulers
• Safety Scissors
• Hand sanitizer
• #2 pencils
• Pens with black ink
• Erasers (both pencil toppers and the bigger block type)
We also are in need of prayer champions. Please be in prayer about how
God can use the people of our church family to bring His love to our
surrounding community and beyond.
Ferndale First United Methodist Church will offer a free community dinner on
Wednesday August 26th. The evening dinners are open to the entire community. Serving time begins at 6:00 p.m. and continues until 7:30 p.m.
Come enjoy a wholesome, fresh cooked, home style meal in a relaxed atmosphere. No reservation, no donations or love offerings, and no one
turned away.
Ferndale First UMC is located on the West side of Woodward Avenue. 4
blocks south of Nine Mile Road.
This will be the 15th month that First United Methodist Church of Ferndale
has offered this outreach program at the end of the month when bills often
outpace money.

Registration/Check-In starts at 11:00 a.m.
Opening Ceremonies begin at 12 Noon. Walk begins at 12:30 PM.

fundraising minimum of $100.

Someone has written these beautiful words. A must read, and try to understand the deep meaning of it. They are
like the ten commandments to follow in life all the time.
1. Prayer is not a "spare wheel" that you pull out when in trouble, But it is a "steering wheel" that directs the right
path throughout.
2. Why is a car's windshield so large and the rear view mirror so small? Because our past is not as important as our
future. So, look ahead and move on.
3. Friendship is like a book. It takes few seconds to burn, but it takes years to write.
4. All things in life are temporary. If it’s going well, enjoy it, that won't last long. If it’s going badly, don't worry,
that won't last long either.
5. Old friends are gold! New friends are diamond! If you get a diamond, don't forget the gold! Because to hold a
diamond, you always need a base of gold!
6. Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, God smiles from above and says, "Relax, sweetheart, it's just
a bend, not the end!"
7. When God solves your problems, you have faith in His abilities; When God doesn't solve your problems, He has
faith in your abilities.
8. A blind person asked St. Anthony, "Can there be anything worse than losing eye sight?" He replied, "Yes, losing
your vision!"
9. When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them; And when you are safe and happy, remember
that someone has prayed for you.
10. Worrying does not take away tomorrow's troubles, it takes away today's peace.
